About
Costa Rica Meadery is the only commercial meadery in Central America. On this tour you will learn how they are turning honey from local bee hives into mead - a delicious alcoholic beverage. You will also have an opportunity to stroll in the gardens of the Ark Herb Farm and see how ingredients used in the mead, like vanilla, cacao, berries, and herbs, are harvested and used in the fermentation, to create a farm-to-bottle product. Finally you will taste some delicious award-winning meads and see why mead is becoming popular around the world.

Delicious mead, beautiful garden, kind people, local produce
Mar 2021 • Couples
Incredible experience! The botanical garden is huge and beautiful. It’s full of fruits and herbs from around the world, with tons of local produce! Walking through it with such a knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide was a wonderful experience.
I’ve had a lot of mead, and this is hands down the best mead I’ve had. It’s especially interesting and delicious because they only use ingredients grown at the garden. Could not recommend more!

Amazing day at the Meadery
Dec 2020 • Couples
To start, we showed up without reservations, keep that in mind when reading this review. We got to the Meadery around 1130. As we walked in, we received a warm welcome and asked about a tour/tasting. We were informed by the owner that there wasn't any availability for the day, but if we wanted to tour the gardens ourselves for a bit, they would attempt to make time for a personal tasting session at the restaurant bar. We toured the beautiful gardens, taking in the beautiful views as well as enticing aromas of the numerous plants, trees, and herbs. Upon returning to the Meadery we were told that a tasting session was possible and we walked, with the owner, up the the restaurant.. A beautiful building atop a hill with a fantastic view overlooking San Jose. We couldn't ask for better scenery to take in while we began the tasting. Keep in mind that the restaurant and Meadery are separate entities. The restaurant graciously allowed us to sit at the bar and enjoy the tasting, unscheduled. We started the tasting with 2 delicious beers, both of which were expertly crafted on site and we wish we could have enjoyed an entire bottle of each! Following that were the meads, which we found to be even more delicious and were met with informative conversation regarding the entire process from harvesting the ingredients through the entire brewing process. Upon finishing the tasting we received a brief tour of the orchards; where the ingredients are grown and harvested, tasting a few of the fresh ingredients as we walked and discussed more of the process for making the meads we had just tasted. Again, this was all unscheduled and the owners made room for us during their busy day. We couldn't be happier with our experience and, when we return to Costa Rica, this will be a stop for us once again.

It was a pleasure meeting both of you. I'm glad you enjoyed your mead and beer tasting at Costa Rica Meadery! Good luck with your own mead adventures in Alaska. When you return, bring some bottles of your fermentations and we can do an exchange!

Highly educational and completely unusual
Jan 2020 • Couples
Here is something that you would never expect to find so interesting. Michael and Alejandra introduced us to a marvelous world of local herbs for spices, food, natural colorants and essential oils.
Then they showed us their integration of these herbs and fruits into their unusual collection of craft meads. We tasted 4 of their 6 craft meads bottled like beers and we also tasted the more conventional sweeter meads. Ale’s enthusiasm and detailed knowledge of their products was contagious and fun.
We also toured their Botanical Garden which included most of the varieties of flora found in Central America. Don’t miss the house built in a tree with a wonderful view.

Truly amazing!
Jan 2020
I recently visited the Meadery for the second time and was blown away again. First thing, the mead is amazing, If, like me, you thought mead was only a very sweet dessert wine then you owe it to yourself to check this place out and see some of the amazing things they are doing. They of course have traditional meads (although with a lot of really interesting varieties and flavor profiles) but they are also making some amazing meads that are more like a fretting, funky beer. I never in my life thought I would love to relax on a hot Costa Rican afternoon with a nice bottle of mead, but man I'm hooked now.
And even if mead isn't your thing, this place is just a fantastic place to visit. The owners, Michael and Alejandra, are such lovely, passionate people and the property is home to one of the most beautiful botanical gardens I've ever seen. We learned so much about the plants, animals and culture of Costa Rica. And the treehouse! I don't think I can do it justice with words, you just have to see it to believe it.

Highlight of our tours!
Jan 2020
We bring groups to Costa Rica for craft beer tours. We are more than happy to include mead in our adventures. After every 8 day tour I survey the groups and Costa Rica is ALWAYS rated their #1 experience.

I can hardly do justice to the experience. First of all forget everything you know or think you know about mead. Alejandra and Michael are true artisans using ingredients from the herb farm where they are located to make world class beverages. The quality and creativity are unmatched anywhere I have been.

The hospitality is amazing. Alejandra and Michael really meet you where you are. If you are just interested in a new experience and don't know much about mead they are happy to educate you as you enjoy the beverages. If you are really knowledgable about craft beverages, they can explain the most technical aspects of their process to you.

Then there is the location. Truly a hidden gem. The herb farm is located on a mountainside just north of San Jose. It features medicinal herbs, mezo-american plants, tropical fruits and other flowers and plants from all over the world. There are over 4,000 species on the farm. Every inch is a new discovery. If you are lucky Alejandra will take you on a walk and you will see, smell, touch, and taste many things along the way.

I cannot recommend a visit to Costa Rica Meadery highly enough!

Mead in paradise.
Jan 2020 • Friends
We just left this place and it was amazing! Trying the different meads was great, and it’s made with some hyper local ingredients. Then we walked around their beautiful herb and botanical gardens. It’s an amazingly beautiful hidden gem. Great mead. Great land. And great people who are passionate about both.
