- sandracU3887YS0 contributionsMirissa whale watchingThis trip is advertised as a 3-4 hr morning trip, inclusive of breakfast and morning tea. It cost 60 USD each. We went on the early morning whale watching trip which left the harbour at 6.45 am. After about 30 min we ( and several other whale watching boats) saw an adult fin whale surfacing for air. Shortly after and separated from the mother was a very small (2-3 metres) baby fin whale. All the boats chased and got very close to the baby (with 2 m). This lasted for about 20 mins. I leave opinion of the animal ethics of this to you. Most of the boats then left the baby. We were given watermelon, cake and banana to eat. Then as we had seen a whale we were told we are now heading back to the harbour. Arrived back approx 9 am. Again you can judge if you this this is a good experience for the money.Written 16 April 2024
- blaisec9940 contributionsWhale of a timeYou need to arrive early at yoru boat so as to pick a good spot in the front of the boat, else seeing a whale would be difficult. Our boat was the Yamuna Cruise owned by Chaminda. This boat was piloted responsibly, they did not cut in front of other boats nor drove recklessly towards a whale once sighted. They maintained the recommended distance. Caution, in a three hour trip approx. you will actually see a whale for max about a minute in total plus or minus.Written 5 February 2024
- erika s0 contributionsheaven in one tripTrip was absolutely phenomenal! I got to see hot only whales, but also flying fish, turtles, and dolphins . - AvinashGoyal840 contributionsHorrible and scary experience - very unsafeHorrible and worst experience of our lives. Have done this in New Zealand and the experience here is below a 1/10. We booked a private charter with Chaminda given the reviews and checked multiply times given weather should we go out. His team and he insisted it’s ok and that we have booked and we will be fine. They also said it’s safe and ok to take young kids. The experience was beyond horrible - the waters were choppy like crazy, water flooded into the boat and the kids and family got very scared. The weather was terrible and not appropriate and unsafe. We shld not have gone out and they shld have listened to us. We had to come back in about an hour and obv did not see any whales. They showed us some spinner dolphins from far and said you saw dolphins. After the ride their ppl are like please tip us. And then worst of all when we are trying to call him post to fix things - either a part refund etc - they switched off phones Don’t be fooled by the reviews. You will regret itWritten 27 December 2023

We had good communication from Chaminda and were picked up from our hotel promptly at 6am.
We were given tea or coffee on arrival at the harbour.
The boat was well kitted out with good seating and life jackets were essential.
The staff were excellent with communication, help with any sea sickness concerns and spotting whales.
They were very respectful of the wildlife, explained clearly their reason for staying at a distance and tried to stay away from the medley of other boats out there who were definitely happy to harass the whales...:-(
We were given several snacks and drinks throughout.
You are on a boat for several hours and the actual sightings are at a distance and infrequent - I would not necessarily recommend it for small children.
We absolutely loved it!
We saw at least 6 separate sights of Blue and Fin whales.
Only sad not to see any dolphins on the day we went but tht is not a reflection on the trip.

Whale watching can be difficult since it takes a couple of hours to reach the parts of the ocean where whales normally reside. Furthermore, they also show themselves above the ocean surface for a few seconds before diving again.
Our experience was great - particularly because the sightings involved looking at a couple of blue whales, followed by spinner dolphins that were extremely close to the boat. According to individuals that have carried out the activity before, we were quite lucky to sight this frequency of whales on a given day. But at the same time, kudos to the staff that are highly qualified in whale watching and take extra care of all passengers aboard.
All in all, great experience and would certainly recommend.

Great experience with these guys. We were greeted with tea and coffee upon arrival and continuously were offered snacks. The boat trip was smooth and easy to get to the whale watching grounds. The crew were very conscious to give the whales space and respect that they are a natural creature. We were able to see the whales at a far and lucky enough that one breeched close to us. The company wasn’t greedy and once we had seen them a few times we respected the whales and headed back to port.
Great natural experience to see the whales!

It's very good one. Our friends and me also saw the whale at very nearest of the boat. The entire boats staff members were well speak and directing the direction of whale movement. All of visitor saw the whale more than ten times at closer. The two whale movement parallel. The Whale name is finwhale, it was only in warm water. It's length should be 23m. Wowww what a amazing trip. Congratulations to the boats crew and all others. In srilanka my best journey in mirrsa whale watching. It around 20miles taking 6hrs from & to. Better experience.

I went out twice with this boat. The first day was quite rough, a lot of people being sick and we were out for six hours without really seeing anything. However I spoke to the captain and he was kind enough to let me join the morning after at a very discounted price. The second attempt we saw a blue whale breaching several times with visible tail at close range! It was incredible and I’m truly grateful to the captain and crew of this boat! Thank you!

We went on a whale watching tour with this company today. The price was 7,500 rupees each. The boat departed at around 6.45am, once full. In total, including smaller boats, there were around 10 boats looking for whales. Once the whales were located, all of the boats would race after it which we felt somewhat uncomfortable with. We did get to see whales surfacing a number of times (which you can see by it blowing water), albeit from some distance. The boat was full with various nationalities. It was quite chaotic with the staff members constantly having to shout at people to sit down (so as not to unbalanced the ship nor block others' view). We don't know whether it was just bad luck that it was busy out at sea and that the other passengers on our boat were uncooperative.
We looked at reviews before we left and chose this company given its five star reviews. Our experience probably warranted 3 star. If you are looking for a less chaotic atmosphere, perhaps look at a more expensive option.

Yes of course i agree with you. It seems you dont to like to go whale watching other people and what best matches you is a private tour. but thing is that a private tour just for your family is very costly. everyone cant afford that price. in that event, others lose the opportunity of watching whales.
if still you want to go whale watching on a private tour on speed boat.we can definitely arrange it for you.

We started early morning around 6 am. This company picked me up on time ! During the trip we watched Dolphins, wales and phinwel. It was mind blowing. Every time crew members gave us headsup about how to get the maximum view of the animals and their behaviour is super professional.
Thanks a lot crew team !

We thought it was nice and we saw the blue whale three times.
On the way back we also saw a manta ray.
Unfortunately breakfast only consisted of a sandwich which we couldn't eat because it was too spicy. The fruit afterwards was delicious though. Unfortunately we didn't see any of the promised water. We also found the price very high and we think you could have gotten it much cheaper on site. The driver of the tuktuk also wanted to pay us on the way back, which we didn't do because it says here that it's free, so be careful of the drivers.
All in all we can still recommend it.

The tour was very well managed and supported by a really helpful and cooperative staff. Besides making it a comfortable tour, they were honest about the ability to sight a whale before the start of the trip and also, ensured that we saw a couple of them few times.
Overall, a memorable and worthy tour! Recommend travelers to visit the gigantic ocean with them and make the most of your SL trip!
