- 1Operating schedule: You will be met by your tour guide at the piers of Mirissa. You will start your Whale Watching Tour at 6:30 am. The boat will take two hours to reach the place where whales are commonly seen. It is recommended that you bring a packed breakfast with you. However, please be environmentally conscious and avoid littering. Sri Lanka has many types of whales inhabiting its waters. The whale population around Mirissa, which lies on the southern coast of the island, includes blue whales, sperm whales, fin whales, occasional orcas, and many types of dolphins. They are best seen between the months of December and April, when the seas are comparatively calmer. Your boat will be reducing speed and engine noise as you approach the site where whales are most seen. You will be stopping at a safe distance of at least 300 feet away, with your closest approach being a 100 feet. This tour will allow you to watch the whales responsibly with minimal environmental impact.

Our driver was super kind and besides the elephants that were easy to find he pointed out numerous animals in the trees such as a crocodile, specials bird and monkeys. Also the jeep was the most comfortable jeep we have ever road in. Tip! Our driver contacted us the day before to suggest we move the time and location to be able to see more elephants. We highly recommend you follow up on his expertise and experience. We saw around 75 elephants that day!Written 22 September 2024

- ShariWestSussex0 contributionsGo early and avoid holy daysBuddha’s tooth was apparently snatched from his funeral pyre and smuggled in to Sri Lanka by a princess and here it is kept in a casket and is considered very holy. People come to make offerings and hope their prayers are answered. Beautiful flowers are sold at many stalls outside. One must not take photos of anyone in front of the buddhas. There is a memorial to a faithful elephant and people can light incense sticks for loved ones. Most people wear white. All must show respect by covering legs and shoulders. Shoes are not worn in the whole complex. 200 rupees to have them looked after. Go early and avoid holy days.Written 7 September 2024
