About
On March 11, 2011, the Great East Japan Earthquake happened. It was a magnitude 9.0–9.1 and the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan. The earthquake triggered a powerful Tsunami that reached a maximum of 40.5 meters and traveled up to 10 km inland. At present, more than 15,000 people are counted as dead and over 2,500 people as still missing. Even worse, we lost control of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. On this tour, we visit the coastal area of Fukushima. We hope you can get a real perspective of the damage caused by the disaster and the effect it had on Fukushima. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and can have an important impact on your life.

A great experience

Had a great 2 days exploring Fukushima with JWT. The staff were very friendly. It was great to hear the first-hand stories of the people who experienced it.

Friendly, In Depth and Well-Rounded Tour
Feb 2020
I seriously recommend this 2-day tour by Japan Wonder Travel. I was on the two day tour and it was extremely eye opening- but also very fun because it was filled with a lot of genuine people who were fun to spend time with. I had done a lot of research about Fukushima for school and I was curious to go for myself and see what it is really like. I’m very glad I went because until now I did not realize just how one-sided news articles were about the accident. The tour both confirmed and disproved research I did.
Because I did prior research, I also expected the radiation dosage I would get from going to be a lot worse than it was. We were all given Geiger counters and most places we went to on the tour were only around ~0.20 uSv/h and the hotel we stayed at had no abnormal radiation level at all. By the time we came back to Tokyo the next day, we had only received 0.004 mSv of radiation which is essentially nothing.
Tourism into disaster zones gets a bad reputation from bad companies who take people to spots to gawk at, while this tour does take you to points of interest and great places to take photos, it deeply respects the community and makes sure that all rules are followed. Unlike other tours, this one takes you to a range of people with different viewpoints about the disaster. You get to see community centers where people are rebuilding their lives, museums, and meet with local individuals who really remind you that the disaster had an individual impact on every person who lived there. The tour gave me a lot of hope and I was inspired by the community members who were trying to overcome this tragedy. The hosts we had were very easy to approach and fun to talk to. The two day tour gives you the opportunity to spend more time with the other participants and I unexpectedly made a lot of new friends! Proving even further the long-time impact I had because of Japan Wonder Travel. I hope to return to Tomioka, Namie, Okuma, and Naraha town again someday

Well-organized and respectful tour of exclusion zone
Jan 2020 • Solo
I was very impressed by the comprehensive yet respectful tour of the towns around the Fukushima Daiichi power plant.

During our 2-day tour, we heard from organizations tasked with cleanup and citizens who are rebuilding their towns. We encountered a variety of perspectives, some of them uncensored and unsanitized.  Discussions among our international group were built into the schedule, and we learned a lot from each other as well, particularly regarding perceptions of nuclear energy across the globe.

If you find yourself in Japan, there are few things I would recommend more highly than getting off the beaten path and meeting the beautiful people of Fukushima prefecture, who would benefit greatly from positive press and tourist dollars.

Interesting Tour without Bias
Feb 2020 • Couples
My wife and I took this tour in January of 2020. They took us to a variety of information centers and witnesses to the disaster. The tour guides themselves presented no opinion or bias. They were exceptionally accommodating and polite. They were also very respectful of the horrors that these people suffered.

The tour was focused on the current status of the area around Fukushima-Daiichi and the clean up efforts. This was certainly not a "dark tourism" tour, the tone was somewhat hopeful with an eye towards the future.

Amazing tour which provides you with a lot of impressions
Jan 2020 • Friends
Amazing and definitely a trip which you‘ll remember.
We got the possibility to talk to a lot of different persons with different perspectives and views on the disaster and the impact on the whole area: workers from Tepco, the government or former (and now again after restrictions were lifted) residents. The tour was very well organised from beginning to end, the accommodation was good and we had a very nice tour guide which provided us a lot of information. We visited so many places, every one them impressing. Ghost cities divided in No-Go and Liveable areas, a cottage were the farmer takes care of contaminated cows, cities, were the habitants put a lot of effort in it to revitalise it and so many more.
This tour really changed my mind. Beforhand I associated with Fukushima only the nuclear catastrophe, however, it is so much more. The people there really have a story to tell and it’s 100 percent worth it to listen to them.

A unique window into Fukushima
Jan 2020
A unique tour that seeks to dispel misconceptions about Fukushima, introducing participants to a range of voices from the areas that suffered in the wake of the 2011 earthquake and nuclear disaster. You'll gain insights into the events that occurred, and witness the remarkable rebuilding efforts by local communities. The guides are knowledgeable and refreshingly candid.

Amazing and heartwarming Tour
Jan 2020
This tour really changed my mind about Fukushima in a positive way. Before joining the tour, I had not much knowledge about the current situation and how the people there are trying to get back to normal life. During the trip we could walk in the villages that were evacuated and went to areas where it is still not allowed to come back. We visited museums and information centres which were built from the local people. We also got the chance to talk to a lot of people who experienced the disaster and decided to go back. It was heart-warming to hear how strong the people are and how much effort they put in. They really want that the world hears their stories.
The tour was well organized and the highlight was definitely to speak to the local people and asked questions. I was so surprised of the different point of views. We got to hear many different sides of opinions which I did not expected and the local people were so happy to see that we are interested in them and their lives.
We also stayed in a training centre in Naraha builded for a Japanese soccer team. During the disaster this place served as an accommodation for the refugees.
I would highly recommend this tour so that more people can hear the voices of the locals and to learn more about the real situation in Fukushima. You will see so many unexpected things there!

Eye Opening!
Jan 2020
I joined the tour having a little to no knowledge about what actually happened in Fukushima. I have a lot of misconceptions about Fukushima prefecture but after the tour, I proved everything wrong. The tour started by giving us introduction about what happened in the past, The information were explained in a way that is very easy to absorb. Then, we had the first hand experience of the present situation. We visited the actual evacuated villages and talked to the locals. Hearing all the stories from the people who actually experienced it was the highlight of the trip. Lastly, we were told about the plans in the future. Most of the things focused on making the area liveable again and making sure that history never repeats itself. I knew that this trip will be very informative but i didn't expect that it would touch my heart deeply. I have seen the efforts the people are doing to once again live a normal life, and i have nothing but high respect to every one.
The tour is well organized with highly capable tour guides. The hotel was incredible! I highly recommend people to join this tour and know more about the Real Fukushima!

Very educational
During this 2-day tour I had a chance to understand much better the situation in this region of Fukushima Prefecture. I could see how big damage this region got, but yet how much effort and work people did and doing to fully recover the towns. During the trip I could hear a lot from local people and also form the Workers who are cleaning the area. The many different points of views gave me much better pictures of the whole situation. During the trip we had many opportunities to ask the questions about the past, present and future. You not visiting only abandoned areas but also the new builded places which are bringing local people hope. Highly recommend trip with amazing guides who cares about you. Also during the trip you we stayed in a training centre builded for Japanese soccer team.

Visit Fukushima! :-)
Jan 2020
Seeing is much better than hearing.
If you are still wondering "To go or not to go", I suggest you to go there!

Visiting Fukushima itself provides you much info of real ongoing situations.
Encounters with local people and hearing their opinions & thoughts (peoples' kindness and hospitalities are real gem & treasure of this land), you can have another different perspective.

Of course, Japan and its people have to keep thinking direction of this nation (especially sustainable way of energy, power generation), but just staying in your comfort zone and criticizing Japanese poeple never give you solutions.

I myself really enjoyed visiting and staying in Fukushima.
If by chance, I even thought about relocating myself there.
(If you don't drive cars by yourself, it is a bit tough living in there, though, since
public transportations are not very comvenient there.)

Visit Fukushima and enjoy!
There are so many undiscovered wonderful things there!
