Great experience
Jan 2020
Mack, our guide, was fantastic. He took us to several local restaurants to get a taste of the local food which was delicious. We really enjoyed the whiskey tasting and appreciated the knowledge that Mack had about how each whiskey was made, it's origin and history. Thank you Mack for a great tour!!

Totally worth it!
Dec 2019 • Couples
This was an excellent experience. Mack was very knowledgeable and spoke very good English. I'm a big whiskey fan and have tried many over the years but this was an incredible tasting with very rare and delicious whiskeys. I would do this again in a heartbeat and would recommend it to anyone from the experienced whiskey drinker to the beginner.

Professional and friendly degustation
We enjoyed the tasting. It was organised we in a nice bar in Ginza. Mats was excellent and he shared great information.
After the tasting we felt more knowledgeable and we also thought we had made a new friend in Tokyo.
Definitely worth it if you would like to try nice whiskeys in a very friendly context

Good experience with suntory whiskys
Knowledgeable guide (Mack was great) and good bar to experience some of Japan’s best whiskys. My friend and I booked the small group but it ended up being just us so we got the private tour for free. Only issue was that the whisky brands that we were given were suntory brands and no other brands. We were hoping to try some local independent small brands. Makes sense given that the bar we went to had some relationship with suntory (that being said it did give us the benefit of trying a couple of rarer liquids).

Valuable lesson about the local culture and the history of Japanese whisky.
Oct 2019
Our tour guide Mack gave us a history of the local whiskey brands right from the beginning when whisky was first introduced in Japan, through the war times up until the present days.

Great whisky with a nice guide!
Aug 2019
We went to a very nice whisky bar in Ginza where we got to try 4 different Japanese whiskys from different distilleries. The tasting was accompanied by information about the different distilleries and about Japanese whisky in general. Our guide Mack had made the effort to go to the bar some days in advance to ensure that they had certain bottles of whisky - some that were not even on the ordinary menu. We had a great time!

Japanese Whisky and Food Tasting
Sep 2018 • Solo
Booked this tour last minute so wasn't sure what to expect, what I thought was going to be a group tour ended up being a personal whisky and food tour. The tour ended being really great and my guide Mack was awesome. Really knowledgeable about the Tokyo area, food and Whisky. Would recommend if looking for something different and more of a personal experience.

TERRIBLE - Completely missold tour. NOT recommended. AVOID this company.
Oct 2018 • Couples
I work for a specialist Japan tour operator and saw this whiskey tour online and thought it could be of interest to our clients. I contacted Japan Awaits in June to arrange a whisky tasting tour for some clients visiting Japan in October for their honeymoon.
Japan Awaits were very quick to confirm the booking and take my full payment for this tour however once they had received payment, they failed to respond to any further emails. My clients needed to make an adjustment to the time of the tour so I repeatedly wrote to Japan Awaits but they ignored every single email. Fortunately, they had provided me with the name and phone number for the guide in an email in June, so I was able to make the arrangements directly but the complete lack of response from Japan Awaits did not fill me with confidence and shows that they either simply do not care about their customers or that their systems are so badly broken that they simply do not know what they are doing.
In the event, having heard nothing more from Japan Awaits, my clients had their 'Whisky Tasting Tour' last week. This is what they had to say about their experience with this company:

"I believe you said this was the first time you had booked with this company so I wanted to let you know about our experience. We did go to a bar and drink whiskey and a guide was there but that was it. When he ordered he just picked a few randomly and when the server asked him about preference he just said that he had to order for us since this was a tour. He also only ordered half sizes of 3 whiskey for us to try and one cocktail. Additionally, when I asked him about the different between the whiskeys he told us he didn’t know anything about whiskey. Overall we were there for an hour and a half and it didn’t meet the goals of the tour description at all. The guide was very nice but his company should not have assigned him to a tour he doesn’t know anything about."

I was shocked to read this report from my clients. Japan Awaits charged 36,000 JPY for this tour and couldn't even provide a guide who knows anything about whisky!

I of course refunded my clients completely for this insult to them on their honeymoon. I also wrote to Japan Awaits to complain about such terrible service an to ask that they refund me but of course, they have ignored that email as well. I have now completely lost faith in this company and would say this to anyone considering using their services:

Japan Awaits do not conduct themselves in a professional manner or treat their customers with respect. They seem to be set up only to take money from unsuspecting tourists without providing anything close to what they promise. There are lots of companies offering cultural experiences in Japan. Based on my experience with this company, I recommend you use another company and avoid Japan Awaits.

We are so sorry about this negative experience. After the tour was conducted, the tour guide was adamant that he had not made any of those remarks but there was no excuse for not handling this issue properly at that time. We have made significant changes since this tour and we can assure you that this will not happen again in the future with any client. We have completely overhauled the company last year to improve the customer experience and have had positive feedback from our customers on the experiences. We hope you'll consider us again in the future and allow us to make it up to you. Thank you again for your feedback and for allowing us to learn from our mistakes and to grow as a company.

Not what we were expecting.
Sep 2018 • Couples
On one hand, I feel bad giving this a low review because our tour guide was lovely and we enjoyed our conversation with her, however, the tour was not what we were expecting. We were taken to a bar which only offered Santori "whisky", with a menu that was very clear and easy to order from, which we could have easily ordered from on our own. We expected the bar to have a varied selection of whiskys, perhaps hard to find and/or unknown Japanese makers, rather than just Santori. We learned about Santori, which was interesting, but just not very exciting all-in-all. I think the description of this tour should indicate that you are going to learn about and choose from a few different Santori whiskys. Had we known this, we never would have booked the tour.

Hi Serena, thank you for your feedback and we are very sorry for this experience. We have actually made a lot of changes since your kind feedback and have since changed the whisky bar and how the tour guide conducts the tour. We are sorry that you did not have a good time and we hope you'll contact us and allow us to make it up to you with another experience in the future.

AWESOME PRIVATE TOUR
Jun 2018 • Family
If I could give 6 stars, I would! Amazing private tour conducted by Kaz! He made this a very special evening for me and my wife. Great little momento that Kaz gave us at the end of the tour as well. Great atmosphere at the bar, great tastings, and great tour guide.

All and all, an amazing night!
