About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- BennyundChristine0 contributionsFantastic Service / 5 stars are not sufficientWe do not often write reviews but Patrick´s service from VIP Tours Jamaica was outstanding. We did 4 customized excursions from Montego Bay with Patrick during our stay in Jamaica (October 2024). We had planned our tours with Patrick via email ahead of our stay. The communication was great, fast and clear. Patrick was always on time for our tours. The van was air conditioned, clean and comfortable. We did tours to Greenwood Great House and Falmouth, YS Falls and Blackriver Safari, Hampden Estate Rum Distillery and Kingston Town (Bob Marley Museum and Devon House). The roads sometimes were less than perfect, Patrick drove very carefully and cautiously. During all our trips we felt safe and secure with him. Thanks also to Bobby who was our driver to Kingston. Patrick was kind and very professional, he always took care that we had a great time during our tours and made sure that our programme went as planned. We highly recommend Patrick and VIP tours for a safe, first-class service in Jamaica! When we come back to Jamaica, Patrick and VIP Tours will be our first-choice!!! Thank you for a great and safe time!!Written 16 November 2024

- altamit0 contributionsTake the tourThis tour takes the whole day, considering the distance between the 3 destinations. But it's definitely worth it! The waterfalls are breathtaking, the Appleton Estate tour is informative, and the lunch served at the estate is delicious - I wish I could have had seconds. The private tour of the Black River was stunning, and I even had the chance to hold a baby crocodile! I highly recommend. The staff with VIP tours Jamaica Shoshana and Jack were accommodating, comedic and knowledge.Written 7 February 2024
- 460malcolms0 contributionsWorth BookingMy wife and I booked this package through Chukka during our trip to Montego Bay & we were not disappointed. We were glad we booked it with a tour company as the roads are small & windy. The drive from Montego Bay is a couple of hours. Yet our driver was amazing & provided a lot of wonderful information. This is a fantastic way to see the sights & country outside of the city. We were definitely not disappointed. We enjoyed learning about the Black River, seeing the YZ Falls & learning about how to make rum at Appleton Estates. At the falls take tip money as the lifeguards will assist you walking around the falls & take your pictures. The tour guide at the Black was very knowledgeable & let us touch us a crocodile. Finally, the Appleton Estate Tour was very informative & interactive. We would definitely recommend & we were not disappointed.Written 17 December 2023

- Russell B0 contributionsA very full day experiencing this beautiful islandEverything was awesome. The Appleton Estate tour was fantastic…entertaining and informative, and the 3 rums was tasted were outstanding. YS falls: a beautiful spring-fed series of falls with natural pools to swim in, rope swings, a guide who took a ton of great pictures, and great jerk chicken and fries. What else do you need? The Black River tour was a beautiful ride through the mangroves with Egrets, Herons, and 5 or 6 good-sized crocodiles. Our captain was informative and hilarious. Our Driver/guide, Jermaine, was outstanding. He told us about the history of the island and life on the island. He made sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. We will absolutely book with him again when we come back to this beautiful island.Written 11 May 2023
- 938Lmarie0 contributionsA great way to see the islandBooked this tour during an Apple Vacation. It was a great way to see the island outside of the resort. The Black River Private Tour was very interesting and it is good to know they are trying to preserve this wetland. They are restocking the alligators and they do come up close and personnel to the boat. The thing that I really didn't like was that the tour operator did ask for a tip at the end of the ride. It was the only time during the whole vacation there that someone actually suggested a tip. I didn't give him as much as I would have because of that. YS Falls is really very pretty. We got to climb up on the rocks and you could go in the water at the base of the falls if you wanted. The water was to cold for that. You could zipline if you wanted too. I did not. The Appleton Estate tour was really the best. Our tour guide was fabulous. You got to see how the rum was made back in the day and at present. You got to taste sugar cane, which I had never tasted and the molasses byproduct from the distillation process. Of course there was the rum tasting and after the tour that was my husband's favorite drink at the resort. The estate was very pretty and well kept. The fees were included in our tour price so I can't speak about that. I truly enjoyed seeing this place. If you have the time I would recommend going to see this estate. The falls are really cool and I would go see this attraction again if it was included with something else. The falls are in a park and the grounds are very well tended. I probably would not take the river tour again, it was ok but not that interesting. These 3 places took us over quite a bit of the island. It was very interesting to see how the people there live. Our tour guide told us a lot about life there and I really enjoyed hearing about that. Many areas are really very poor and it gives you a different perspective about things. Taking these tours was a nice way to get off the resort safely. If you can, I suggest taking a tour just to see the island in a different way.Written 27 March 2023
- Parvonneh G0 contributionsDo it!!We had amazing tour guides. Got to see a lot in one day. First we did the Black River safari. Beautiful scenery and learned about the animals in the area. Next we did YS Falls. A relaxing place tucked away from the super touristy areas. We had lunch there. Great food!! Final stop was Appleton. Very informative tour with a nice tasting. If you are looking to really see different parts on the island away from the beaten path, I recommend.Written 18 February 2023

- Chloetsundere0 contributionsGreat experience, saw a lotLoved the rum tasting and the sugar cane juice was yummy (had to work for it was fun). Held a crocodile, saw many in the river too, they come when called. Ys was well guided and very pretty! The guide took pictures of us and we could rope swing there. So lots of good memories. Only downside is with everything in Jamaica for tours, a bit expensive. But must say, this was my favorite on our Jamaica trip.Written 28 November 2022
- leahsnoop0 contributionsGreat round-trip transportationPatrick was the best host/driver for our long excursion from Montego Bay to the boat for our transportation to the Pelican Bar and back! He talked the whole way and was telling us about different parts of the island that we drove by and was so knowledgeable! Highly recommend it!Written 16 November 2022
- christinesL101OX0 contributionsBest GuideWe booked a trip to Floyd’s Pelican Bar & were blessed to get Patrick Vasser as our driver & guide. Patrick navigated the busy narrow roads expertly, never getting flustered with the multitude of questions asked regarding the passing scenery. He even took the time to ask if we needed a “pit stop” & as a group of 4 woman, this was a welcome break!! You could certainly tell he had done this many times before. But, his thoughtfulness did not end there. He continued to show us and tell us exactly what to do & waited while we were off on our excursion! It was definitely a comfort knowing he was waiting for our return. He took us to an area where could rinse our feet and use a restroom before our trek back to our resort. Our journey back was equally pleasant, again entertaining our multitude of questions. Patrick was professional, considerate, knowledgeable, kind, friendly, & honest. All these attributes are so important when you are in an unfamiliar area. Trust is really hard to earn but we felt that immediately with Patrick! Right from the beginning he told us the journey to our destination might be a little crazy & chaotic but that he will take care of us…and he delivered! I recommend Patrick to anyone who is traveling to Jamaica & books through Viator! If you can…request him!!Written 16 November 2022

Great bucket list excursion! Boat staff very friendly and professional. Great tour! It would have been nice to stay in the water a bit longer. Beware-bar staff charged men more than women for beverages. Also not very friendly towards women.

This was so cool!!!
Unfortunately it was a windy night and full moon so the Lagoon wasn't a illuminated as it normally would have been. However it was still bright and the tour guide was very knowledgeable about the history of the Lagoon. Made it very interesting. It's cool to know only 4 places in the world you can experience this and we got to. Pictures do no justice.

Thank you for your review, Sorry about your pictures but your camera must have night vision on for you to get a good picture. Your next option is to use the professional photographer that was on the boat.

Watching the lagoon light up was definitely a sight to see. I was skeptical about getting in the water but our guide Shane was so amazing. He stayed with me the entire time and talked about why the lagoon glows at night. He made the tour so much better than what I expected.

We loved the actual lagoon. That being said the rest was a disaster. It is not an island routes tour. Aside from the driver picking us up and dropping us back at the hotel island routes has nothing to do with this. We arrived at 6;45 to an open air shelter. We sat on plastic chairs until about 7:45. We were then packed over 30 people on a boat with many small kids. the trip out was less than 5 minutes in the boat and they started the process of people getting in the water. Lots of kids were the first in and quickly became frightened not being able to see or touch the bottom. many came back on, some stood on the ladder and waited for lifejackets. it took us at the back of the baot 15 minutes to get to the water using the single ladder. The disorganization was frustrating with people coming back on the boat with others trying to get out still.
They could improve this by offering family boats and adult only boat, having more than one single entry and exit point or simply taking less people on the boat. the tour claims an hour which considering the boat ride out and back is maybe 6 minutes should be plenty of time in. However we spent maybe 20 minutes in the water and were told to get back on the boat.

DO NOT DO NOT go on this tour... it is a waste of time and money. If I could give them less than one star I would. They take you about 10 to 20 feet from shore and it is pitch dark. Was unable to see anything glow. Everyone who jumped in said the water was freezing. The people were swimming around and all I saw was mud. One of the workers on the boat brings a bucket of water on board for the people that didn't jump in and I was able to see the glow (which was the highlight of the trip). Really don't go to this!!!

This is a ridiculously fun thing to do. The water does actually glow and we were told the rain days are the best because the rain drops make the water glow too. They provide a small dance show to fill in the time before full dark and nights with bright moon are not the best time. So much fun.

Just get a taxi to take you there. From Montego Bay it should only be 50 dollars round trip. Buy the photos from the photographer. There is no need to pay to do this with a guide. All you need is transportation there and back. The food shack next to boat sells frozen smoked marlin. We defrosted it and ate it with crackers and cream cheese. So good
If you mess up and do this in a group as an excursion you will end up on big slow bus. And it will cost much more

We had so much fun on this excursion. Other than a longgggg car ride from our hotel, everything was great! We had a few drinks at the bar before the boats took off and watched the beautiful sunset at the docks. There were fire dancers afterwards. Bring the bug spray as they were horrible while waiting on the docks. I had some and ended up sharing with several strangers who were being eaten alive.
Staff was good and took time to explain everything. As stated in earlier reviews, you only get about 25 minutes in the water, but it’s totally enough.
Since it occurs where the silty, fertile river water meets the ocean there is an unbelievable amount of silt floating on the bottom of the lagoon. In fact, it’s terrifying. I am a former champion swimmer, taught swim lessons for years, lifeguarded, etc and I thought I was going to drown before I’d touch the bottom. 😝 it’s only about 5 feet deep so I was treading water and trying to scrunch my legs up so they weren’t touching the silt. Luckily, my husband stood up and took in all the gross silty bottom for me. Seriously, it was so thick it felt like chocolate syrup. He sunk up to his knees ...really, his knees.
All that being said, it was still amazing. The way the water reacts and glows around you was so unusual and fascinating. I’d go again in a heartbeat. Our friends decided not to get in the water because it was dark and you couldn’t see so the guides brought a bucket of the water in the boat so they could still experience the phenomenon.
It’s almost impossible to catch the lamination on your iPhone or camera so be prepared to pay for the professional pictures they take. To get the full effect of the glow in pics be sure to turn your phone or screen brightness up to full brightness.
Seriously, it was so cool! This nature lover was in awe!

We visited on New Year's evening and the water is exactly as described. There is a unique sludge type of mud that easily a foot deep. The only disappointment was being limited to 20 minutes in the water. I highly recommend this excursion, you won't regret it!

Is this excursion kid friendly? We have 11 year old twin boys.
Written 2 July 2018
There were a pile of kids on our boat. I will say if they are not comfortable with swiming of nervous about going in in the dark wait until others have gone in and/or get them a lifejacket. Our boat had a mass confusion with kids going in and getting nervouis and coming back out the single ladder while people were trying to enter the water. some stood waiting for them to find a lifejacket on the ladder blocking others. while it is kid friendly keep an eye on things.

Are there any weight restrictions? I keep reading with some groups there are and others there are not.
Written 31 May 2018
no weight restrictions. you do have to climb up and down a metal ladder - there is only one for the whole boat. our boat had a minimum of 30 people with not even a single spot available.
Written 18 July 2018
Hi! Can anyone advise what size and type boat this tour is on? Also, are there life jackets aboard the vessel? :)
Written 5 May 2018
The boat I was on had approx. 20 people onboard with room for more. And yes, life vests are available, but are optional to wear.
