What to expect
A typical itinerary for your fast-track Sailing Virgins skipper course (which may change according to conditions) looks like this: Sunday - Boat Familiarisation, Mooring Techniques At 9.30am everyone will meet at the dockside at Le Marin, Martinique. Boat safety briefings, provisioning, food is put away, you're off! You sail to Parc Domania in Sainte Anne and perfect your anchoring techniques. After lunch you have a swim in the perfectly clear water, explore the beautiful south side island, then drop anchor for the day in a beautifully quiet, sheltered bay in Sainte Anne. Monday - Sailing Downwind, Passage Plans This morning you have your introduction to passage plans and downwind sailing. Guided by your instructor you will write your first passage plan and then adopt it to sail downwind to the wooded bays of Anse d'Arlet. Tuesday - Sailing Reaches, Navigation You work on some handy navigation techniques and as a team create your second passage plan. This passage will take you through some lovely water on the lee side of the island. We can spend the evening on the south side of Fort de France, in clean, quiet water that still offers a chance to procure fresh croissants in the morning. Wednesday - Man Over-Board Procedures, Docking With a very early start, you leave les Trois Îlets and head north to the small harbour of Case Pilote. We spend a good amount of time here on "short work", such as various alongside methods and other docking techniques. On the way you learn a couple of techniques for Man Over-Board drills. Thursday - Sailing Downwind, Weather, Reefing Understanding weather is a crucial part of a sailor's skill-set. This morning starts with discussions around meteorology theory and how it is applied in real-life situations. This includes techniques to reduce your sail size (reefing), and how to do it fast, should you ever be surprised by a squall. Then you will have a lovely cross-island sail to the lovely town of Saint Pierre with its renowned restaurants. Friday - Exam day! Today we spend the early hours on theory exams, and the second half of the day putting into practice everything that has been learned thus far. Your sailing competencies will be put to the test, refining any areas that need work.  Saturday - Snorkel and back to base A lazy morning, gentle snorkel and lovely sail back to the base, Le Marin. Debrief and you're done! If you came for your skipper course and passed the theory and practical assessment, you are now an ASA 104 (or equivalent) qualified skipper.

Sailing Virgins is Solid
Jan 2020 • Solo
SV is a good crew of young adventure types that balance solid and informative education with the realities of what sailing is; fun, adventurous and potentially dangerous.

Highly recommend for anyone who wants to learn to sail.

Great vacation in Martinique
Oct 2019
James has a passion for sailing and sharing what he knows with others. We completed ASA levels 103 and 104 in a week but it never felt like school. It felt like sailing with friends. Just the right combination of sailing and enjoying Martinique. After this week I feel very comfortable chartering my own boat for bareboat cruising. I recommend Sailing Virgins for everyone.

Perfect amount of learning with relaxation
Jul 2018 • Friends
We had the pleasure of James and Jack both instructing us through the performance cat course. The excitement they had for sailing and depth of knowledge was infectious. I had never taken a sailing course prior and this being my first time I felt overwhelmed initially but they had amazing patience and tailored the learning to a level I could manage. In the end I learned enough to feel confident moving forward that I someday could skipper on my own!
One of my favorite things about Sailing Virgins is the morning routine of breathing, exercise and meditation! I plan to sail again with them soon!

Sailing Virgins is a class act. Everything they do had the you as the skipper in training in mind. Instructors are fantastic and you learn the whole time in a fun/relaxed environment.

Best week ever - sailing, sunsets & DOLPHINS!!!
I couldn’t recommend Sailing Virgins enough for anyone who wants to learn to sail in a fun, relaxed and hands-on environment.

I was a complete novice who had never even been on a sailboat and I have to admit when I started going through the NauticEd courses online I felt a little in over my head, but the minute we got on the boat (Libby!) I was put at ease. I was really blown away by how much of the theoretical stuff fell into place once I was in a practical environment (thanks to Jack’s expert instruction of course!). I never in a million years expected that we would be at the helm (check me out using the lingo! 😉) on the very first day!

We were a pretty small group for the week, just one other person (also a beginner) and Jack, which meant lots of hands-on experience! The intensity and pace of the course was very much dictated by us and what we were looking to get out of the week which was great, and meant that we enjoyed the perfect balance of sailing instruction coupled with getting to explore the beautiful Caribbean. Some of the highlights of the week included snorkelling with sea turtles, hiking up Mont Pelee, anchoring in a different town every night, sunset dinners on the beach, some “champagne sailing”, and doing shots of local rum with other sailors we met along the way! And how could I forget…SWIMMING WITH DOLPHINS!!! Definitely the highlight of the week (and probably of my life, let’s be honest!), it was such a spontaneous and magical encounter, definitely one that I’ll never forget! 😃 I’ve done a lot of backpacking and as an avid traveller one of my other favourite things about the week was getting to explore the island from a flipped perspective - arriving into a new place by boat each evening with a view of the whole town and landscape.

You can tell that Jack and James eat, sleep and breathe sailing, and their passion and enthusiasm for sailing as both a sport and a lifestyle is contagious! With Sailing Virgins, they have created an experience that is adventurous, fun and relaxed whilst still being super professional. They have somehow managed to turn a world that can sometimes feels a little exclusive and inaccessible into something super welcoming and unassuming!

Whilst I was initially attracted to the travel and adventure aspect of the course I think after this week I’ve definitely caught the sailing bug and I’ll 100% be coming back for Ex-week! It was such a pleasure to meet you Jack, James and Céline and all the other skippers we met along the way, make sure you get in touch if you’re ever headed to Ireland! 😃

Sailing Virgins is not just a sailing school - it is a sailing adventure !
Feb 2018 • Solo
Spending three weeks onboard Libby and not just learning how to sail and develop confidence in boat handling but taking in the breathtaking scenery, amazing people from all over the world and local experience of the islands made this trip unforgettable.

Jack and James are incredible instructors who are letting you be part of their passion for sailing and create a hands on learning experience. From the first moment on, Jack shows his confidence in you and after a while trusts you with full control. We were able to get the boat ready, lift the anchor or sail off a mooring buoy, set the sails and get on the way to the next destination. We explored new places each day and the thrive for adventure made us discover true gems in the Western Indies. I started my adventure snorkeling underwater sculptures and each day provided me with a new memory like seeing the happiness of the local people on our shore visits, walking along the most beautiful beaches, swimming with turtles and eating incredible Caribbean food.

I got to know the art of enjoying the journey in combination with learning how to sail. I am more than grateful to be part of the Sailing Virgins family!

No longer a Sailing virgin thanks to Sailing Virgins
Mar 2018 • Solo
Jack was an incredible coach. His passion for the sport was obvious from day 1 and bleeds through into every lesson he imparted upon his crew each day. Being able to so rapidly turn our NauticEd theory into practice through Jack`s instruction was the most rewarding part of the course. It's also worth mentioning the aspect of the course that is likely unique to Sailing Virgins which is Jacks preference for sailing to new adventures. The course was not just about sailing, but also coupled with epic snorkeling, swimming with sea turtles, cliff jumping, exploring volcanic ruins, and plenty of local French dining. Enjoying everything each days new locaiton has to offer is what sailing is all about! I would not hesitate recommending to anyone to join the Sailing Virgins family on their next adventure.

I lost my Sailing Virginity, and it was GREAT!
Feb 2018 • Solo
I've been on boats for 45 years, US, Asia, Europe. Preference is sailing, not power. Need a Skipper's certificate for insurance purposes (moving to liveaboard Nov 2018). Looked on the 'Net for options in the Carib in Feb-March, post 2017 Hurricanes. Sailing Virgins was a 3rd hit.
Called to see if they had an open berth, spoke with James, was a wee bit worried about the "50 year old upper limit." We chatted, hit it off immediately, I explained that I work to keep physically fit, and he took a chance. More importantly, he was very clear about the route and that it was not a "normal" Sailing Virgins Island Hop, in the sense that they were filming promotions for their YouTube channel. Also, it was a bit of a longer leg than others, 200nm with some night sailing. I said yes, no worries, no hurries. A few days later James offered to give me a full refund, no questions asked, if this wasn't my "Jam". I repeated my assertion that I was up for it if he was. Deal done with a verbal handshake and a credit card payment (I do believe they take Amex).
Flew into Grenada, met at the Café as planned about 09.30 Sunday. Sent him an email with description of my appearance, and a few minutes later he stepped up from a nearby table and we met with genuine smiles and firm handshakes.
Now on to the voyage itself. The Libertas (“Libby”) is a (First?) 40’ Beneteau, single mast, with a 3 cabin, 1 head configuration. She is a racer, more than a cruiser. As such, she is agile and fast for a mono. Clean and well maintained. All safety gear is present and functional. “Safety Second” is a ship’s motto (you have to join her crew to find out what is First Priority). And I can assure you that you will not be in better hands if you have any concerns about surviving the voyage. Adventure is a strong theme. "Champaigne Sailing " is a bonus.
I had the luxury of having both Captain James and Skipper Jack (accompanied by his lovely French videographer Celine), plus the 5-week Sailing Virgins veteran Janaluska (“You can call me ‘Jana’”) from Hamburg. All are unique and interesting in their own right.
From a learning standpoint, you cannot ask for, nor find (IMO), better teachers than James and Jack. Not identical twins, but Brothers-From-The-Heart, they both share a passion for sailing and a strong desire to share their hard-won knowledge with anyone who wants to receive it. If the world of sailing is 10,000 little lessons, James reckons he has had about 3,000 of them. Jack is equally competent and experienced, simply about 15 years behind James. I would trust either one of them with my life aboard water.
One big takeaway for anyone contemplating a sail with Sailing Virgins is this: You can learn as much or as little as you want, in a very safe, supportive, creative environment. These two blokes have got a firm grasp on how to live life fully, with laughter and fun, taking the important things seriously, taking personal responsibility, continuously learning, and sharing in an appropriate way.
As a quick sketch, James is one of those unique, fully alive world-travelers who can seque from teaching basic seamanship (how to tie a bowline relying on muscle memory) to the best restaurant in Bequia to a salty joke or guided mediation or a very interesting breathing exercise without missing a beat. A man of many talents whom I am proud to name as an acquaintance.
Jack is a precocious, world-traveled, warm-hearted, fully-qualified Yacht Master. Equally important to me is his outstanding EQ (“Emotional Quotient”). Both he and James are peers in this respect, but after I committed a social faux pas due to over-exuberance and a tad bit of chemically-induced lack of self-control (not an excuse!), he gently, kindly, gracefully explained the error of my ways in a constructive manner that I do not recall ever having experienced before. My point in relating this anecdote is illustrate that both Jack and James know what is the right thing to do, and do not shirk their responsibility to their roles. With remarkable aplomb, they both gently guide, teach, forgive and help you to grow, as much as you can or want to. A rule of teaching is “assume infinite intelligence and zero knowledge.” Ask James (or Jack) how to tie a bowline and you might find yourself practicing in the most unlikely of places.
As you may have gathered, I endorse James and Jack of Sailing Virgins without reservation. If you need or want more details, contact me at scarnes4NL@gmail.com or +31657050000.
Cheers and fair winds,
