The stadium was opened on 27 November 2009 and became the 104th Test venue in the world in December 2010.

Day 2: KANDY-NUWARA ELIYA

On the slopes of the majestic Kikiliyamana, the fifth highest mountain in Sri Lanka, lies the village of Shanthipura. This is the highest village in the entire island, located at an altitude of 7339 feet on the Kikiliyamana Mountain road from Nuwara Eliya. On reaching Shanthipura, visitors are greeted by the small but beautiful Buddhist pagoda which makes the centerpiece of the village at the tallest place; surrounded by the villagers’ houses in differing altitudes. They will also get to see the villagers’ lifestyles and the interesting methods they use to farm on the slopes.

Pass By: Gregory Lake, Nuwara Eliya Sri Lanka
Gregory Lake was created in 1873 by the British era Governor at the time, Sir William Gregory, supposedly for the purpose of providing electricity. However, the lake was mainly used for leisure and recreation after it was built. At its peak of fame, Gregory Lake was the most prominent attraction in the area and was used as a place to relax by many visitors.

Pass By: Devon Falls, Talawakele, Nuwara Eliya 22200 Sri Lanka
Located along the Talawakele–Hatton road in the Nuwara Eliya district it is a vision of striking green and foaming water down the falls. A captivating sight, it is highly recommended for nature lovers and bird lovers to pay a visit to this amazing natural preserve.  There are two observation points on the A7 highway from which the views of this water fall can be enjoyed. The lower observation point is even more special because, both Devon and St.Clair waterfalls can be can be seen cascading down the scenic mountains.

Day 3: KANDY-DAMBULLA-SIGIRIYA

Stop At: Ancient City of Sigiriya, Sigiriya Site between the towns of Dambulla and Habarane, Sigiriya 21120 Sri Lanka
Sigiriya is the most exquisite example of ancient Sri Lankan art, architecture and landscaping. Built over 1,600 years ago, the now sinister-looking 600 ft high black rock once appeared like a massive dazzling white cloud floating above the surrounding forests. Its sides were painted with beautiful frescoes of semi-naked nymphs. A large gatehouse in the form of a lion guarded the entrance to the innermost sanctum of the city – the Sky Palace on top of the rock. Sigiriya burst briefly into pre-eminence and was then abandoned and lay hidden in the forests for nearly 1,500 years. The climb to the top is strenuous but it is worth it. Definitely a must visit site!

This monastery is the largest cave temple complex in Sri Lanka, dating back to the 1stCentury BC with well preserved mural paintings and 157 statues. The site is surrounded by the plains of Kurunegala on one side and the rock of Sigiriya on the other. The colorful murals portray the history of Buddhism and Sri Lanka. Moreover, some believe that the incessant drips of water from the ceiling, even during the dry season, have healing powers.

The stadium is built overlooking the Dambulla Tank (reservoir) and the Dambulla Rock.

Day 4: SIGIRIYA-ANURADHAPURA-NEGOMBO

As the oldest stupa in Sri Lanka, Ruwanwelisaya is considered to be an icon of architectural glory in ancient Sri Lanka. Ruwanwelisaya, rising with its glory in the city of Anuradhapura, tops the list among Buddhists’ sacred places. Ruwenwelisaya bears witness for his incomparable service to revive Buddhism in the country. It is located just a short walk away from the Maha Bodhi tree in Anuradhapura. The stupa is one of the eight places of veneration situated in Anuradhapura which are places believed to have been visited by Buddha during his three visits to Sri Lanka.

Stop At: Jethawanaramaya Stupa, Watawandana Road B341, Anuradhapura 50000 Sri Lanka
Jethawana Stupa is the largest stupa in Sri Lanka. It was originally 400 feet (122 meters) in height and was the third tallest building in the world at that time. Even today as a brick monument, Jethawanaramaya still remains the tallest of its kind in the world.

Stop At: Isurumuniya Temple, At Royal Pleasure Gardens, Anuradhapura 50000 Sri Lanka
This charming rock temple, dating from the reign of Devanampiya Tissa (r 307–267 BC), is set around a lovely lotus pond, the corner of which is carved with images of elephants playfully splashing water. The central temple has some particularly fine mural paintings. Climb around the back to the rock summit to see the bell-shaped stupa and a pair of Buddha footprints etched into the rock.

Pass By: Tissa Wewa, Anuradhapura Sri Lanka
Tissa Wewa is an ancient irrigation tank was built by King Devanampiya Tissa (250-210 BC). Only Panda Wewa and Abhaya Wewa are considered to be older than Tissa Wewa. The embankment of Tissa Wewa is 11,000 feet long (Two miles) and 25 feet high. The width of the top of the reservoir was found to be 12 feet to 18 feet. The base of the embankment is 160 feet. Tissa Wewa has an area of approximately 550 acres.

 Jaya Sri Maha Bodhiya of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka is the oldest living tree in the documented history of the world. It is a sapling from the historical Bodhi tree under which Buddha enlightened. It was planted in 288 BCF and is the oldest living human-planted tree in the world with known planting date. It was brought from Buddhagaya India by the Ven. Sanghamitta Therini, a sister of Arhant Mahinda – who introduced the Teachings of the Buddha to Sri Lanka.
