- Sightsee426154010470 contributionsWonderful Home Cooking ExperienceOur host welcomed us into her home and helped us to prepare a fantastic selection of curries, creating one of the best meals we had in Sri Lanka! After sharing a selection of vegetables (some of them new to us) and letting us pick which ones to try, we set to work, chopping, grating coconut (and making the milk) grinding spices and cooking in earthenware pots. We learned so much (despite jetlag) and would recommend it.Written 5 August 2024
- jonahk6880 contributionsTop cooking experience in Sri LankaThis was a fabulous experience, we learned so much about Sri Lankan cooking and received a great recipe book at the end. Erangi was a lovely host - I recommend this experience to anyone interested in authentic Sri Lankan cooking.Written 1 September 2023
- 600kira0 contributionsUnforgettable Cooking ClassThis was such an authentic and incredible tour. What a beautiful family experience as well. I learned so much about the local foods and how they are prepared. The clay pots, curries, spices, and vegetables are a wonderful show for the senses with flavors that explode on the palette. Learning how to prepare these foods with traditional practices in preparing the ingredients made for an exceptional class and experience. The endless smiles and joy were shared through the entire class. I would not miss this!Written 16 July 2023

This is truly a beautiful authentic cooking experience in a Sri Lankan home. I can’t express in words, how good this was to be in their home and taste the love of spices and fresh ingredients. ❤️ Make it ‘a must do’ when in Negombo.Written 26 April 2023
- Eoin B0 contributionsAuthentic, hands-on cooking experienceFrom making the booking, Nuwan was really responsive over WhatsApp. Nuwan and his wife’s hospitality was typical of the generosity and kindness we experienced throughout our time in Sri Lanka. They welcomed us into their home and made us feel comfortable immediately. The cooking course was fantastic: informative and enjoyable for a beginner like me and an accomplished cook like my wife. With clear step-by-step instructions, we made a range of delicious Sri Lankan vegetarian and meat dishes. We were introduced to local cooking techniques, and it was clear they had a passion for cooking and the recipes which had passed down through their family. It felt like an authentic Sri Lankan cooking experience.Written 16 April 2023
- Kristy M0 contributionsHeart and flavour in the kitchenExperience ing a hands on cooking evening with Nuwan and his wife came highly recommended - and with good reason ! Just off the plane and invited into their home to be introduced to the smells and tastes of this beautiful isle. Authentic clay pot cooking of a variety of guest chosen curries and accompaniments. - Bthornett0 contributionsBest way to spend our last night in Sri LankaWhat a fantastic cooking class! It's so much more as you are welcomed Into the family home and enjoy a chat over tea before beginning the preparation of all the curries. We had so much fun making all the curries from scratch and picking out all the fresh Ingredients. The best part for me was eating all of them, they were delisious and I can't wait to make them again from the recipes they sent us. We were encouraged to try eating them the local way with our hands which added to the experience although cutlery is provided. We are so thankful for allowing us to do the lesson at such short notice but would encourage you to book ahead. What a great way to spend our last night I. Sri LankaWritten 29 February 2020
- jprc930 contributionsA truly amazing cooking experience!!We had an amazing last night in Sri Lanka spent with this lovely family. We booked very last minute and they were able to accommodate us on very short notice which we are so grateful for. From the moment we got there we felt so welcome and the cooking was truly unforgettable. I would recommend this class to everyone it was amazing to see from scratch every ingredient and method that went into all 9 of the curries we made, we also got to pick which to make which was prefect as we are mostly vegetarian. The curries were also the best we have had in the month we have been in Sri Lanka we were sad we couldn’t finish them all we were so full! We also received photos and the recipes so we can cook at home. If I could rate this 20 of out 10 I would it’s 5 star quality I hope we will visit again and come back to cook again at Negombo Cooking Class ☺️Written 26 February 2020
- edenk20180 contributionsAuthentic Experience! We had half a day left on our trip and had regretted not doing this earlier as we ate so many delicious curries in our 2 week holiday. We decided to spend it on this cooking class and we were so happy we did. The ladies invited us into their home and showed us how to cook about 8 different delicious dishes. We were really happy we did this one and highly recommend it. The house is a 10 minute tuk tuk ride from the airport so it's a perfect way to finish the trip if you have time.Written 1 February 2020
- 18juliak0 contributionsHighly recommendedThis cooking class was an absolute highlight and the perfect end to our trip. Erangi heartily welcomed us in her home. We prepared different curries together and then ate them. The best food we had on the whole trip! Highly recommended for everyone who wants to learn how to cook typical Sri Lankan rice & curry.Written 31 January 2020
- judgefickle0 contributionsExcellent Sri Lankan cooking classWe made about 12 (!!!) different curries including an amazing fresh coconut sambal, and it was all so delicious. We did this for our last night in Sri Lanka and it was a great way to finish the trip with one last (huge) rice and curry meal. Nuwar and his wife are very welcoming hosts and take you through everything step by step. Looking forward to trying some of the dishes out at home. Can’t recommend this experience enough!Written 13 January 2020
- 346alekk0 contributionsGreat Experience with Lovely PeopleWas amazing to be shown and stepped through how traditional Sri Lankan curries are prepared and cooked. Tasted amazing and more than enough food to go around. Also good English and intuitive with a friendly family and also good sense of humour to make it a fun experience. - HH_Gan0 contributionsAuthentic Sri Lankan home cooked mealsIt was my last night in Sri Lanka & was a wonderful end to my trip. I felt really welcomed by this friendly Sri Lankan family, Nuwan, Erangi & their 5 years old son. Erangi gave explanation of the ingredients & spices used, demonstrated how to prepare and cook all the times. They always ensure I got the full experience preparing and cooking all the dishes. Highly recommended if you are looking for hands on and authentic cooking experience in Sri Lanka!Written 21 December 2019
- 164ashleight0 contributionsAuthentic experienceI love cooking and enjoy seeing the way different cultures cook. I had one experience in Sri Lanka where I was only to watch someone else cook but NOT here! Nuwan and his wife do an amazing job of guiding you and then you doing the whole process from husking coconuts on a spike, grating your own coconut, making 1st and 2nd coconut milk... and this is all in the first 15 minutes! We cooked an amazing array of curries/dishes - pumpkin curry, fried eggplant dish, chicken curry, dried fish curry, Dahl and banana flower curry... over 10 dishes! You get a hands on experience in a beautiful family home - a true insight into Sri Lankan cooking! I would definitely recommend and I would definitely do it again if we come back to Sri Lanka!Written 17 December 2019

Very good and authentic cooking class. In a lovely lady’s family home, you can choose 5 vegetables of many she has plus fish/chicken. You make everything- even the coconut milk! Very clean and everything is washed, it is much more interactive than I expected which was brilliant- the woman tells you step by step how to prepare/cook each dish. At the end we enjoyed our food with a. Lovely homemade dessert also.
It is around 25 mins from Negombo beach but absolutely worth it. Afterwards the recipes for each dish was sent to us so we can make at home too.

Great Cooking experience. After having two weeks in Sri Lanka, we thought we tried a few curries, but nothing matched the food that we made here. We were told restaurant curries were good but to make curries from raw ingredients really makes the difference. We learnt a lot about the spice and vegetable combinations that created delicious flavours. In the process, we also got a glimpse into the life of a Sri Lankan woman in the home.

We had an amazing day learning to cook 9 different sri Lankan dishes. We chose pur vegetables and were shown how to prepare them before being taken through all the spices needed to make the curry. Learning how they make the coconut milk was brilliant and all the food tasted incredible.
They could not have been more accommodating and we had a much delicious food to eat we almost burst.
Brilliant experience, a must do in Negombo

Unfortunately we did not feel comfortable due to having to spend 3 out of the 4 hours with a screaming child. The child was extremely mis behaved and our host (mum) would not tell him to be quiet ect whilst we were trying to do simple tasks such as chopping, having this child in the kitchen was dangerous whilst chopping. He was climbing on things shouting at top of his voice ect.
We totally understand this is a family home and a Sri Lanka family experience but we were unable to hear/ relax or anything within this environment. The child was screaming constantly whilst in the kitchen and we did not enjoy this authentic experience because of this. The child also could not keep his fingers out of the food we were making which also made this off putting.
When you pay for an experience $50 you don’t expect to come away from it wishing it to be over due to a mis behaving child the whole time - such a shame as other reviews are Great hopefully we’re a one off, but in future I would say don’t let a mis behaving child scream down the kitchen for 3/4 hours whilst we are trying to be taught how to cook. Not fun

Congratulations - you have found this amazing place!
We have attended cookie class with Nuwan and his lovely and talented wife Erang.
The course took place at home in their kitchen, which was a very inspiring and authentic experience.
We started by choosing the vegetables we wanted to get to know and working with, then we were initiated into all facets of coconut; coconut milk 1 and 2, and the preparation.
The execution of the dishes and the choice of ingredients and spices, was a whole universe in itself - super exciting.
We worked with all the dishes in clay pots, from the preparation to cooking and serving.
In addition to all the vegetables, spices and ingredients, it was clearly to feel the respect and love for the food that Erang had.
The food we had made was ABSOLUTELY amazing and also the absolute most delicious dinner we had on our entire trip.
A good tip is to start with the course, as early in the trip as possible, as the course provides a rich insight into the Sri Lankan dishes, thus making it easier to order food at restaurants later on the journey.
Likewise, it was really nice that Nuwan was helpful in arranging (fair) transportation to and from the course.

I attended the Negombo cookery class with a friend for our last night in Sri Lanka. We had the best time and agreed this was a fabulous way to end our trip. The family were so welcoming and helpful. We booked last minute and they accommodated us with no trouble. The class was thorough and informative but also really fun. The hosts were patient and kind. It was great to get involved and do the cooking ourselves. The food was absolute incredible, so fresh and authentic. We have been sent all the recipes for everything we made and a few extras to try at home. We made 10 dishes in total and each one was just delicious! We recommend this class to anyone who visits Sri Lanka, it was an absolute highlight and we would return in a heartbeat. 🙏🏼

We were collected from our hotel and taken to a lovely Sri Lankan family house near the airport where we were welcomed with tea/coffee and gorgeous sweets and coconut biscuits. (30 minutes from our hotel)
The cooking class took place in the family kitchen and we cooked nine wonderful dishes which were all different. Shown how to prepare the vegetables and what spices to add to each dish. A very hands on experience and the time passed very quickly.
We then sat at the family dining table and enjoyed a delicious dinner. It was a privilege to spend time with such a wonderful family in their home and see how they lived and it’s a memory that we will treasure. We were away from hotel around four hours.
I cannot recommend this experience highly enough and we will definitely cook the dishes again now we have the recipes by email.
Thanks so much.

We had a great time with this cooking class, a really fun way to spend the morning/afternoon! It was a private class for me and my girlfriend in a nice house in Negombo with the friendliest family. We arranged collection also which was perfectly on time. The food preperation and cooking was an interesting learning experience and the resulting food was the best meal we had in Sri Lanka 😋 I recommend this class highly!

I have taken many cooking classes all over the world and this has to rate as one of the best by far! After exploring the local markets for our ingredients Nuwan and his family welcomed us to their home. They explained the different spices and vegetables used in Sri Lankan cooking then let us have a go at it. In all we made 12 amazing dishes and I can honestly say they were the best I had while in Sri Lanka, and not difficult to make. I would absolutely do this again when I return and highly recommend it to everyone, even if you are not a cook you will enjoy it!

We visited the Negombo Cooking Class on day 1 of our trip to Sri Lanka in August 2024. The trip was organised by our tour operator and my husband and I visited with our children (boys aged 12 & 13).
Our host had so much knowledge of Sri Lankan cookery and taught us a lot about using spices and coconuts. We cooked chicken curry, different vegetable curry, rice and sambal. We chose the vegetables we wanted to use, helped prepare the vegetables and book the dishes.
It was very hands on which our children especially enjoyed. We sat down to eat after all the hard work and the food was delicious. We were sent the recipes by email after the class.
I would highly recommend, it was lovely meeting the host and her family and being welcomed into her home and understand real Sri Lankan cookery. Thank you so much
