What to expect
  • Get ready to explore Latin America's biggest and oldest university, the UNAM, or National Autonomous University of Mexico, and its campus listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site for its unique architecture and rich cultural past. More than just a campus, the UNAM is a world in itself. Founded in 1910 as a liberal alternative to its predecessor, the Royal University of Mexico that had existed since 1553, major works of what was to become a truly incredible project, begun in 1949 under the helm of some of Mexico's most famous architects such as Mario Pani, Enrique Moral, Mauricio Campos and renowned muralists Diego Rivera, Juan O'Gorman and David Alfaro Siqueiros Today, the UNAM is still an ongoing construction projects as it evolves to meet the needs of its ever-growing student population. During your 4-hour VW Beetle convertible or classic VW Combi tour, you'll be taken from your downtown Mexico City hotel to the southern part of the city where the UNAM proudly sits. There, you will discover a city within the city, covering over 7 square kilometers, and which hosts 14 different schools, an Olympic stadium and swimming pool, botanical gardens, a museum, a sculpture garden and much more. You will stroll along with some of the more than 330,000 students that attend the university each year. You'll visit several of its schools, discover its one-of-a-kind architecture and numerous murals, and ride across the campus from one end to the other in one of the cute little VW Beetle or VW Combis. Make no mistake, the UNAM is not your ordinary campus and nor will this tour be any ordinary tour as you'll truly get an insider's view of this place with your guide, who is a UNAM alumni himself. Come and learn about a place that will show you an architectural and historical take on Mexico's past, present and future ambitions.

Memorable Luis Barragán Tour
Aug 2021
What a phenomenal experience! We took the Satellite Towers & Cuadra San Cristóbal Tour and had the best experience. Alfonso, who was our guide, was so full of knowledge about Luis Barragán. He was so accommodating, fun, and helpful. I highly recommend anyone who is a design aficionado to take this tour.

Amazing, worth it.
Sep 2020
We loved the tour, Martin, was an excellent tour guide, full of enthusiastic information.
We went to Cuadra San Cristobal and were the only ones there, it was a gorgeous crisp day and we felt lucky to be able to go during these weird times of COVID.
The journey was 100% safe and the driver was excellent.
Thank you!

A truly memorable and excellent experience!
Mar 2020
My wife and I are aficionados of Luis Barragán and we wished to see more of his architectural work. We booked this one day tour, which exceeded our expectations by far. We couldn’t have done it on our own. Our guide was charming, knowledgeable, competent and courteous. What a day! We shall do it again with different venues, if that’s possible. Highly recommendable!

Great day with Ricardo
Feb 2020 • Couples
Had a wonderful time with Ricardo not only exploring UNAM but just discussing about life and culture in Mexico and Canada. Even the drive through the city was informative. The UNAM campus is beautiful and diverse, and there is no way we could have done it on our own and got the same pleasure from it. We enjoyed riding in the restored VW van and Ricardo is a knowledgeable young architect who speaks perfect English and was fun to hang with for 5 hours.

Love architecture and urban design?
We were picked up at our AirBnb in Roma right on time in a vintage red VW van. Our tour guide was an architect who provided an engaging conversation about the city and it’s society as we drove through CDMX traffic for about an hour on our way to UNAM.
Roberto toured us through the original campus with its most interesting architecture, urban design and amazing art installations. The library, wrapped in mosaic is particularly outstanding.
We stopped for lunch at the museum of modern art - another outstanding building, and concluded our visit with a walk through the sculpture gardens incorporated into the ecological reserve. Roberto then whisked us home back to Roma.
This is a first rate tour experience run by a very professional company with a very suitable guide.

Luis Barragan Architectural Tour
A wonderful day our guide Martin was great. He was very knowledgable not just about Barrigan's architecture but about art, design and politics. The day flew by and we learned so much about this visionary Mexican star architect or self styled 'landscape designer'.
I highly recommend The Traveling Bee. They are highly professional and deliver on their promise. We will use them again for another educational tour when we return.

Today I took the full day Luis Barragan tour . It was a wonderful day on many levels . Being picked up at my hotel in a 70’s Vintage VW Mini bus , that was in perfect condition , was a fun way to see the city. It was also very comfortable . Our guide , Alphonso, was the perfect guide ....prompt, considerate, intelligent and amusing. He was raised in Mexico City and is also an architect so he knows what he’s talking about . The Barragan projects were amazing and it was great to finally see them in person . The day flew by ... I only wish I had more time to go on one of the other trips they offer.
Next time ....

Best thing we did in Mexico City during our short stay!
Nov 2019
We were so lucky to be able to book such an awesome tour! We did the Northern tour and we think it is the best way to see Luis Barragan's work especially because of the restricted access of a lot of his works.

We really appreciated the insight and knowledge Roberto offered throughout all the spaces - it was so amazing hearing how to view specific moments or interesting facts that only someone who has visited the properties frequently would know. We especially loved how we didn't feel rushed at all while we were on the properties and were able to ask lots of questions.

We had been wanting to see Luis Barragan's work for years and it did not disappoint especially the way it was shown during the tour! Could not recommend enough - will definitely be checking out the other tours next time I'm there! Thank you so so much, won't be forgetting this! Zoe and Ping

Mexico City South: architecture and lifestyle
Nov 2019
Our second tour with Traveling Beetle was as gratifying as the first. Our very knowledgable guide Tito, weaved an authentic and lasting picture of lifestyle and history of the grand city by guiding us through neighborhoods, modern and historic, parks and buildings, churches and campuses, combining the landmarks with off-the-beaten path places...a unique experience that must not be missed.

Highly recommend Luis Barragan tour!
Jul 2019 • Friends
We had a wonderful experience on our tour! My friend and I went on the Northern itinerary Barragan tour with one other very nice couple and had a fantastic experience. Our guide (Roberto) was very knowledgeable and personable. The properties were AMAZING. Because we booked somewhat last minute, we weren't able to add on the optional Luis Barragan house/studio tour on the same day, but Nicolas was kind enough to book it separately so I could visit on a different day. Highly recommend this tour for anyone traveling to Mexico City - I plan to do another tour with Traveling Beetle on my next trip!
