About
Enjoy one of the most amazing shows in Mexico: the migration of the monarch butterfly. Monarch butterflies come from southeastern Canada and northeastern United States and traveling over 2,500 miles to Mexico. The monarch butterflies spend their winter hibernation clustered in small areas of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. In this adventure you will visit the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary in Michoacan, where you have a breakfast, after we will start a hike in the mountain to where the monarch butterfly colony is located.  After this experience, you can know about mexican gastronomy in a workshop in which you can cook tortillas and salsa. The return to Mexico City is between 8:00 pm and 8:30 pm

Beauty on the Wing
Feb 2020
Seeing millions of migrating Monarchs congregated at the Sierra Chincua butterfly sanctuary during late February 2020 was, for my wife and I, an event of rare magnificence.

Our tour guides, Marta and Alonso, were delightful hosts, responsive to our requests and patient with our woeful lack of Spanish skills. The trip from and to Mexico City took 3.5 to 4 hours each way, so having friendly, knowledgable experts with whom to chat was much appreciated.

One caveat: As a 65-year-old coping with a foot issue, I found the hike up to see the butterflies quite strenuous. We rode horses about half the way up, then walked the rest of the way. That part was OK, but we skipped the horses on the way down, figuring that half of the journey would be less tiring. Somehow, though, we seemed to be climbing our way back down, too. Not sure how that worked, but we took a bunch of breaks to rest. I did a lot of research before we left trying to find out difficult the hiking would be, and it was more challenging than I had expected.

... but! We saw mllions of gorgeous butterflies and lived to tell the tales . If you are interested and in decent shape, you'll enjoy an unforgettable experience with some top-notch experts leading the way.

Wonderful experience on Butterfly Monarch Tour
Jan 2020 • Solo
Felt taken care of from beginning to end. Me and my friend were picked up and dropped off. The guide was kind, smart and thoughtful. Felt like we were in the hands of pros. The trip up the mountain is strong, but the guides were considerate and paced us well. The food included was delicious and it was a day well spent.

Amazing tour
Alonzo and his translator Gerard picked us up at our hotel and took us on an awesome journey to the butterfly sanctuary where we had a nice lite lunch before hiking to where the butterfly’s were. The local guide and our tour guide were very knowledgeable and helpful. After the butterfly’s they took us to a delicious dinner in El Oro which is a very cute little town, from there we did a short tour of some of the historic buildings in the town. 10/10 would do it again even if just to hang out with Alonzo, we loved that guy!

An unforgettable tour!
Feb 2018 • Couples
Wow, this trip to Sierra Chincua can hardly be summarized in words. The experience was completely unforgettable and Sierra Chincua was one of the most amazing natural sights I've ever seen. Paseos Touristicos did a wonderful job from start to finish. They provided much more than just transportation: We learned about the history and culture of the area as well. The included lunch was amazing and cooked personally for us by the most wonderful family--Lola's cooking is delicious! We had wonderful guides on all stops of the trip and had a completely smooth and hassle-free day. I can't recommend this tour enough.

Awesome guides and beautiful views
Jan 2018 • Couples
Our guides picked us up right on time at our hotel, which was just a couple of blocks off of Paseo de la Reforma. The driver spoke only Spanish, while the other guide spoke excellent English. They made sure to ask us about heat/cold in the car and the need to stop for snacks or bathroom several times. The drive is long, so I suggest packing snacks and water. The guide had toilet paper if you find the bathroom on the way doesn't have any.

There are bathrooms at the sanctuary for 5 pesos. There are lots of souvenirs, too. Lunch at the sanctuary was included. There were several options. You order before you head up the trail, then eat when you get back. The only outside expense is the sanctuary trail guide. You're supposed to tip him afterward.

The trail was extremely dusty when we went (Jan 2018), so you might want to consider bringing or buying a mask if you have lung problems. Make sure to be wearing comfortable clothes that you don't need to wear another day of your trip. The horses can't take you all the way. I don't know that you really get all that further with them than by foot. It's going to be a tough climb beyond that point anyway. Everyone was taking their time, making stops to catch their breath. I'm obese, but not completely out of shape, if that helps you know if you can do it or not. I saw healthy-looking older people having more difficulty than I was because of the strain you put on your knees.

Just as advertised, there were butterflies everywhere once we got up high enough. It's like heaven. There's no way to show it with photos or videos. It was amazing. The guides at the sanctuary were showing people the difference between males and females and how to tell if one or another type of bird had attacked the monarch.
