A bit of a rough start, but ended off amazing
Feb 2020 • Couples
There were very few reviews for this particular tour when I booked through Tripadvisor. On the day of the tour, there were no clear indications about who the tour leaders are. We saw a few straddlers also looking to go on a similar tour. We all had signed up on different sites with slightly different names and duration. Ultimately the tour guide called the tour company and sorted our names out. Because there were many other locals trying to sell us tours, it was difficult to know who to trust.
Once we got on the boat, it takes a good 30-45 minutes to get our boat out of the parking spot. You’ll have to experience it yourself to figure out how that’s done. We were able to get drinks before we embarked on the river cruise. The doll island was very interesting albeit creepy. If only it didn’t take 2 hours + to get there. I had some issues with the “aquarium” we went to in the end. Don’t think the reptiles and fish are very happy.
Our guide Anton was great! Despite the long cruise he kept talking about all the culture and details of the place (plants, houses, etc). Very responsive to all of our questions. Our boat driver Carlos - props to him to driving us for such a long time. It’s hard work!

Definitely a good experience. Never go to xochimilco in the afternoon. Way too crowded.

Otherwise excellent day spoiled by dishonest mango vendor
Feb 2020
Lots of info about this neat area in other reviews. Two micheladas in, I flagged down a mango vendor and accidentally gave him ten times what he charged me for the mango. He left immediately, offering no change. By the time realized my mistake, he was long gone.

Whatever else it was, it was disappointing. Just be especially careful with your money and don't expect any mercy from the vendors on the water, who you would think would be content selling their overpriced goods to tourists without outright ripping them off.

Best Tour in Xochimilco
Jan 2020
I took this tour because everybody talked to me about. The Island of the Dolls is a fascinating place with a creepy story behind which makes it a must-to in Xochimilco.
I booked my tour with Embarcadero Las Flores Nativitas because customer service was excellent since I booked it. They were on time and I loved the different facilities such as food, beverages and tour guided brought to me. It seems their expertise! I HIGHLY recommend it. Good price for quality!

Canal Area of the City
Oct 2019
This is the remnants of the lake that was once Mexico City and is a garden/canal area. I explored the area in a kayak, having participated in an AirB&B experience. I am sure if we were not guided, I would have gotten lost in the canals. We went to the island of the dolls, where hundreds of creep dolls hang from trees as a tribute to a little girl who drowned in the canals. Many people were taking the canal boats and there were even musicians playing on them.

Do not follow the guy on a bike
Jan 2019 • Family
We were walking to one of the embarquedero when a guy on a bike told us that he navigates people to the embarquedero and that we don’t have to pay him. He had a name tag so we thought it was something official and we followed him. At the place the guy took us we were told by another guy (a manager) that it was 1500 for 2~2.5hours ride which includes the island of dolls. I negotiated down to 1300 for 2~2.5h ride (which was overpriced, later I found..) anyways we were enjoying the ride, the boat navigator was friendly and very nice. At one point (after 45minutes) he turned around in the middle. We thought we are taking a different route to he island of dolls. But he brought us back to the dock and said this is it. We were on a boat for 1.5 hours and we didn’t go to the island of dolls.

I talked to the boat navigator that we paid for 2~2.5h and we didn’t even go to the doll island. He replied that “the manager didn’t tell me anything about it”. I complained but that was all he replied so I talked to the manager and he said that “it would be 2h if you get off somewhere, and that the boat had went to the island of dolls, it was just that you didn’t notice” lol. I was upset and demanded some money back but he said that the money was already gone to someone. It really ruined our trip.

Floating Party!
Jan 2019 • Friends
I have traveled far and wide and so far I have not found a country that can party and have fun like Mexico.

Simply put: Mexico takes the cake and eats it, too.

Recent reconfirmation of this was our New Year’s day boat ride through the canals of Xochimilco south of Mexico City.

These canals are of historical interest because Mexico City was once a collection of islands and it’s easy to imagine that it was composed of similar terrain.

It’s also an amazing place to party!
The recipe is simple: colorful doublewide gondolas, USB speakers and mariachi bands, floating food vendors, crisscrossing crowded waterways, lots of alcohol and people who love to sing, dance and share the good times with others.

We teamed up on the docks with a young Mexican couple, divided and conquered to negotiate a good price on a six hour tour that took us beyond the crowded channels and out into what felt like the Louisiana bayou on mushrooms. Along the way, we picked up some lunch from a floating restaurant and made good use of the “honor bar” which consisted of a giant bucket full of ice and beer.

The wooden party boats move slowly, bumping into each other and doing an amazing watery dance to make slow progress through the chaotic canals.

Eventually, a cool cable driven elevator system lifted our boat over a barrier and into the quieter canals, home to farmers , egrets and white pelicans. Our gondolier plied his long pole to slowly navigate us toward the bizarre “ Isla de las Muñecas,” the “Island of the Dolls.”

This creepy island is populated by hundreds of decrepit dolls nailed to and hanging from trees. It is scarier than any traveling carnival house of horrors, easily the weirdest place I have ever been.

The site was created by a man trying to ward off evil spirits after a young girl drowned there 50 years ago. Ironically, he also drowned there many years later. Now it’s basically a tourist attraction where all spirits, good and evil, can wander through a rotting plastic freak show and buy candy, Coke and quesadillas. I honestly expected Chuckie or Freddy Krueger to jump out from behind a tree and kill me.

Fortunately, this brief detour into the macabre didn’t spoil what was otherwise a raucous good time that reaffirmed to me how truly dull the real world seems when compared to a sunny day on the canals of Xochimilco.
