- scratchford0 contributionsSpectacular Beauty You’ll Have to Work to SeeThe crew was fantastic! We loved that the team showed us clear technical expertise with a human touch. The area is stunning. My only qualm comes from the limited information about the difficulty of the hike due to altitude and challenging terrain. This is not a casual hike.Written 24 December 2024
- harrylL9345QZ0 contributionsAmazing experienceThe tour was an amazing experience. Our tour guide, Sergio, is experienced and friendly. I got really sick because of the altitude, so we didn't make it to the summit, which was a shame. However, the view was gorgeous and definitely worth the hike. Highly recommended, but make sure you are well prepared for the altitude and physical demand.Written 18 December 2024
- tys12_130 contributionsImpressive day hike and landscapes!Great day tour! The landscape’s impressive. And the fact we were able to hike up to 4600 feet in a single day is great. We were a group of around 8-10 people. 1 girl got super sick because of the altitude. It is a tough hike and the return is hard going down the mountain. But all in all, a great day walking/hiking. It’s optional to go to the summit and i’d say you need some good level of fitness and if you feel unwell because of the altitude, don’t attempt the summit!! Serge was a great guide and took our safety as a priority with constant breaks and ensuring we were all okay! I’d say it would be better to start earlier in the day to avoid the traffic. We met at 7am. We didn’t start the hike until 10am. And it was a long day, we finally got back into CDMX around 8pm.Written 21 November 2024
- FranciscoR11800 contributionsYou need to do this!!!It was an amazing experience! Thanks to Giovanni, our guide, who was very friendly, experienced, and patient. Also thanks to Beto, our other guide who stayed behind and toured the lakes with a couple of people who weren't able to summit. I'd also like to mention that both guides were very aware of the weather situation (as it could have rained or had lightning), so they were prepared to take the necessary precautions and lead us down a quicker path down the mountain. This is what you would expect from experienced mountain guides, but I just want to reiterate this. Thank you Mexico Travesias. I will look forward to my next adventure with your company. Regards.Written 7 November 2024
- V8992TLjohnc0 contributionsUnforgettable experience. Highly recommended.Nevado de Toluca is a can't miss experience for nature and hiking lovers. The views are incredible from start to finish, lagoons to peaks. Cesar was an outstanding guide who kept us safe, comfortable, and entertained the entire tour. He was super informative and taught us a lot about the geography and legends of the volcanoes. It was nice to make new friends with our fellow hikers. We finished the day at a delicious local taco restaurant. My wife and I had such a wonderful time, we booked another tour with Cesar for the next day! Muchas Gracias Cesar! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!Written 6 October 2024
- Red_Panda22180 contributionsThe best experience of my stay in cdmx!Had the most wonderful day hiking with a group under the guidance of Sergio and Alan! both guides were attentive and checking in with the group from time to time. Arnulfo on whatsapp was always present. All in all a wonderful team! Thank you for the wonderful experience!Written 2 August 2024
- alexsD2030UF0 contributionsWonderful experience on Nevado de TolucaEverything about this trip was amazing. Our guides did such a great job, we went with Sergio and Alan. They picked us up in CDMX, took us to Toluca, guided us up the mountain, which is a gorgeous hike, then took us for the best tacos after! Would totally recommend them.Written 1 August 2024
- shiyuang20240 contributionsA challenging yet rewarding experienceThis is an amazing experience. The mountain and lake is really beautiful but this is much more of a mountaineering experience than just sight-seeing. Our guide Carlos is an experienced hiker and he is quite patient and attentive. He prepared lunch, snacks and water for us. It took roughly 3 hours from Mexico City to the starting point of the hike, and it took us about 7 hours to finish the hike (we had a group of 4 and we went all the way to the summit). After the hike, we went to dinner at a restaurant that's half way back to Mexico City. I would say the climb to the summit feels a lot 'wilder' and, considering the altitude and terrain, definitely more challenging than the well-known 'hard' trails I've visited in US national parks (e.g. Upper Yosemite Falls / Angels Landing @ Zion / Old Rag @ Shenandoah). There's not a lot of places where you can climb a mountain at such altitude in a single day, and I would definitely recommend this tour for anyone interested in such an experience.Written 2 July 2024
- Pioneer075918703930 contributionsAmazing Mountain Tour with a Professional Guide! We had an incredible time on this mountain tour! The scenery was absolutely stunning, with breathtaking views at every turn. Our tour guide was exceptional—knowledgeable, friendly, and professional. They shared fascinating historical insights about the mountains, which made the experience even more enriching. We feel so sorry for our friend who couldn’t join us; they really missed out on an unforgettable adventure. Highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to explore the beauty and history of these majestic mountains.Written 20 June 2024
- Nomad460624275280 contributionsSigue adelante!Wow, what an awesome experience! We had Ceasar and Sergio as our guides for our group of 9. Half the group stayed at the lagoon, while the other half summited El Campanario (based on your preference). We ate dinner at a lovely little cabaña in La Marquesa where I ate until I couldn't eat anymore. 110% would take this tour again! It's been my most favorite experience so far in Mexico City. For those wondering how hard this hike was - I don't hike, but I do exercise every day and consider myself to be at an above-average fitness level for a 30-year-old. I had already spent 4 days in Mexico City to acclimate to the altitude, and I did not get altitude sickness at Nevado de Toluca (which is double the altitude of Mexico City). But even though I didn't get altitude sickness, I still struggled to reach the summit of El Campanario (I ended up getting double thigh cramps during the hike!). However, our guide Sergio made sure we took it slowly and took enough breaks, and in the end, we all made it! Make sure to eat a good breakfast and hydrate before the hike!Written 10 June 2024
- 925zehans0 contributionsExceeded all expectations - Incredible day to Toluca’s summitI just finished my tour to the summit of Nevado de Toluca, and even though I was the only one on the trip, the tour still went ahead, and it absolutely exceeded my expectations. I couldn’t have asked for a better day. Cesar, my guide, was simply amazing, friendly and entertaining. He was always making sure I was okay, especially since I hadn’t had time to properly acclimatize before the tour. Despite this, he encouraged me to go as far as I could, ensuring I wasn’t pushing myself too hard. Thanks to his support, we made it to the top. Not to forget that he’s an incredible photographer. The day was absolutely incredible, with a clear sky and breathtaking views. To top it off, we ended the day with delicious tacos in a small family kitchen. Arnulfo, the coordinator, was also great, always available on WhatsApp to answer any questions I had. Overall, it was a better-than-expected experience. Highly recommended!Written 3 June 2024

- DenisM2460 contributionsSolid choice for mountaineeringMy wife and I visited Mexico City and asked Travesías Mexico to help us to organize the mountaineering part of the e trip. Arnulfo was very kind and helpful, he took us through the process of planning and preparing very efficiently. First we climbed Nevado de Toluca (4,680m). It’s a beautiful volcano with two spectacular lakes in the crater. Our guide Sergio was very professional and helpful. The next climb was Orizaba. The entire process of transportation/camping/food/etc. was organized like well oiled machine. Our guide Bernardo was our mom and dad through the entire process. His professionalism, kindness and patience were invaluable for the beginners like us. Travesías is a very solid choice for any mountaineering adventure around Mexico City.Written 18 April 2024

I went on the Trekking Through the Volcanoes tour with Mexico Travesias guide Alberto and 4 other trekkers this Sunday (10/29/23). The tour was well organized from the meet-up, with good explanations about what was going to happen, and realistic expectations about the trip. This included an honest warning that traffic would likely be extra heavy due to the F1 race (which it was!). We made one stop on the way to the volcanoes for restrooms and to buy breakfast/snacks, if desired. We were provided with backpacks with a bottle of water, bottle of Gatorade, sandwich, apple and a couple of other snacks. We were also given trekking poles. It was cold at the beginning of the dat, so I was glad I brought a fleece and a rain jacket, but I did end up warming up and taking them off after 30-45 minutes. I am a moderate runner who regularly exercises at least 3 times per week (at sea level), and in the altitude, I did find it difficult to catch my breath after going uphill for just a few steps. Alberto did a great job giving us many breaks, checking on us frequently, and monitoring us for signs of altitude sickness. I think we spent about 5 hours hiking, although I am not exactly sure, since I was paying more attention to the beautiful views. I reapplied sunscreen twice, but should have done even more frequently, as I still got slightly sunburnt! After the hike, we stopped at an outdoor roadside restaurant to eat tacos and quesadillas, which were included in the price of our day. The drive home took over 2 hours due to the extra F1 race traffic, but it was ok since I had been warned! The day was totally worth it! I would recommend this trip to anyone who wants to get out of the city and see the volcanoes but has not trained beforehand or does not want to hike at a grueling pace!

The reviews of this trek were spot on. Our guide, Carlos, was friendly and informative without being too intrusive since we ended up being the only two on the tour. So it felt private and he catered to what we wanted. Popocatepetl was active when we arrived, spewing lots of angry smoke and ash. After checking us in at the ranger station, we set off. At elevations well above 10,000 feet, this hike took a lot of stamina, but it was well worth it. Carlos supplied us with water and snacks which we ate after about 4.5km. At that point, he gave us the option of a short return hike of another 4.5km, a longer but more strenuous return totaling 11km or the one we chose which was the longest at 13km but mostly downhill and passed by a short waterfall. I'm glad we chose the longest, passing under the shade of forests and accompanied by a local dog who darted in and out as he led us back to base. Upon returning to the ranger station, we took a short break and headed down the mountain for lunch, which was delicious. I had a chicken quesadilla in a blue corn tortilla. The worst part of the trip was the drive home in Mexico City traffic. Big tip: if you have to use the lavatory, be sure to do it before heading home!

Amazing trip well worth it!
Alan was our tour guide and he was great - really friendly, fun and knowledgable.
There is a grocery store near meeting point to grab breakfast but you also stop on the way for the bathroom and can get breakfast from a street vendor there. The journey there took around 1.5 hours with some amazing views on the drive up.
We were given the option between an 8km or 12km route. Views were amazing. Wasn’t a particularly difficult or steep hike. The tour company offer some longer and more challenging hikes if that is what you’re after.
I brought an extra layer but didn’t need it as was warm. They provide a backpack and plenty of snacks and water and a delicious sandwich which we ate at the top.
On the way back we stopped at a small place for some amazing tacos, all included in the price of the tour.
Drive back took over 2 hours due to bad traffic but not much can be done about that!
Highly recommend this tour - made even better by the brilliant Alan!

Went with my brother. The tour took us to the wonderful state of Puebla. The sights and sounds of seeing the active and dormant volcanoes were absolutely beautiful.
The hike was another thing. It was definitely an adventure. The guide indicated that it was an “easy” hike. Let me warn the non-hikers and city folks….it definitely had challenging moments. Our guide was young and went through this area numerous times. As a result, he was too fast for some of us in the group. We suggested that we slow down, which we did briefly, but the pace always picked up. Quickly going up in altitude was not so fun, as the body needed time to adjust. To reach the top, I believe it took almost two hours. When we reached the top, the group was exhausted, but we only had 15 minutes to rest until we had to go back down. Hiking back down was the challenging part for me, as we cut through some shortcuts, and a headache came through.
Again, this was the “easy” tour compared to all the other hikes they offer. I suggest to the inexperienced hikers, who are looking for a fun time, to make sure your guide slows down and is mindful of the whole group.
Our last stop was at Amecameca. We ate at a restaurant( El Conejo Alegre) in a rural area. The food was excellent. Just be mindful that the restaurant is very rural and did not have running water in the restrooms. It reminded me of some parts of Asia. It didn’t bother us and I enjoyed the atmosphere, but just something to be mindful of.
In terms of transportation, the van was old, the seats were loosely attached to the base. There was no AC on and I couldn’t get the windows opened. It got warm during the day, and being stuck in traffic for two hours with minimal ventilation was uncomfortable.
Not sure if I would do this tour again, but looking back, it was definitely a memorable experience.

Hiking, photos of peaks, beautiful plants and waterfalls - lots to love! Carlos, our guide, was friendly, warm and an excellent guide through the terrain and the day's events. As he will tell you, take your photos early in the day because the afternoons tend to be cloudy. The day called for rain, but the forecast improved once we set out -- Carlos offered everyone on the trip the opportunity to reschedule their hike, but we all decided to continue. I really appreciated that assurance being built into the trip. Finally, a tip: the elevation may be challenging, especially if you are coming from a low altitude environment: pack Advil and schedule the trip in a few days after you arrive in Mexico to give your body time to adjust. enjoy! :)

This was my first trek in Mexico and first with this company, would definitely recommend. The trip was very well organized, food and water provided more than sufficient, and our guide Alan was very friendly and helpful.
The walk is a little challenging if you are not acclimated to the altitude yet, but still very doable as the pace & incline are very moderate. Views are fabulous, and the stop at a local roadside eatery was a perfect finish even with the severe downpour. A great day in the beautiful Mexican outdoor!

Beautiful and challenging hike! Carlos was on time and the drive there and back seemed short with his interesting conversation. The guide was fantastic, he took great care of us and it was really fun to hike with him. The volcano and waterfalls were stunning. Local and authentic food tasting on the way back was relaxing and nice completion of the day trip. It's advantageous to care about waether forecast and prefer a date with nice weather and clear sky. The view is really excellent. I highly recommend taking this tour.

Our group consisted of 4 guests and the guide, Marco. We were all compatible, hiking-wise, and we covered 13km. Marco kept us together at a comfortable pace. He was an excellent driver and guide. The scenery was spectacular and unlike any other you are likely to see in North America. Lunch, water, and snacks were provided, and the tacos and quesadillas we got on the way home were fantastic. The hike started at 3400m and topped out at 4000m, so be sure you are in decent condition. That being said, the guide should tailor the hike to suit the group.

An unforgettable walk far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. We were provided with small rucksacks with food and water, and driven to the spot. After the trekking experience, we stopped at a local spot to taste Mexican cuisine. (The food was included.) Our fantastic guide Galileo gave us some interesting information about the area. He adjusted the pace to the group and we took breaks whenever we needed. No stress or hurry! We spent a lovely time! We were lucky to be in a small group. I do recommend this excursion!

Hola! Espero se encuentren bien. Quisiera saber si hay disponibilidad para hacer este trekking este sábado 22 de julio. Seríamos 4 personas. También quisiera saber qué riesgos hay si el Popocatepetl está en amarillo fase 2. Es seguro? Gracias!
