- julouisianne0 contributionsHire Roberto for your Oaxaca guide…he’s the best!Robert is an outstandingtour guide. From the minute he picked us up in his spotless vehicle, we had an excellent experience. The first day was so great, we booked another morning with him. His English is perfect, and he is knowledgeable, engaging and entertaining. Some of the highlights were going to a craft village where we learned about weaving from a ninth generation master. The natural dyes were so interesting to learn about, and the rugs and wall hangings are exquisite. We also visited a family who makes chocolate, and a candle maker who spends hours perfecting her art. Another top experience was visiting a family of woodcarvers who make albrijiies which are painted animals and fantastical creatures. Their work is unbelievable detailed, and it was wonderful to see true masterpieces. None of the painted works you’ll see in town can compare at all.Written 3 February 2024
- russbernard0 contributionsfirst-rate serviceroberto’s service is excellent. i work in oaxaca and my wife and i combine work and vacation trips there. whether i need someone to take me to an office and wait for me or take us to tourist destinations in and around oaxaca, roberto is on top of it. in 2023, roberto charged $35/hour. we hired him for the whole day for about $300. money well spent.Written 8 January 2024
- BaylorAshley080 contributionsDriver to and from airportRoberto was on time and had great communication for our arrival and departure from Oaxaca. We got his information through a friend not realizing he did tours as well. Very sweet and knowledgable about his city. Also helped with translating at check in and check out at the hotel. $35 USD airport transfer in nice clean car. Will definitely be contacting him again for future trips!Written 14 January 2020
- Linda S0 contributionsBest Tour!Excellent guide is an understatement! If you want to see the best of Oaxaca and surrounding area, only use Roberto. His rates are fantastic and for the whole group! Added bonus is his impeccably clean cars. He’s will be a lifelong friend.Written 8 November 2019
- kfree1870 contributionsAmazing Tour of OaxacaMy family and I took an amazing tour with Roberto to Hierve el Agua and El Tule. Roberto is an excellent guide, very professional, fluent in both Spanish and English, and most importantly passionate about his job. We highly recommend Señor Roberto for all of your tours in Oaxaca!Written 2 September 2019
- George B0 contributionsAmazing 3 day tour with the familyOur family spent three days with Roberto, and they were the highlight of our vacation in Oaxaca. His comfortable SUV was perfect size to fit our entire family which includes two kids 5 and 8. We worked with Roberto to develop an itinerary for the three days. We told him the highlights that we wanted to see and our areas of interest, and he designed trips that were both fascinating and maximized our time. He didn’t take us to the touristy places--the ones we already knew about, but rather he used his connections and knowledge of the area to show us master artisans’ studios, lunch spots, and other places of interest that we never would have found. His English was perfect, and his knowledge of Mexican history, culture, and surroundings were impressive. He also recommended a friend of his that incredible does market tours and cooking classes that would work with young kids. If you’re looking for someone who will go above and beyond to make sure your trip is amazing, fun, comfortable, and as in-depth as possible, Roberto is the person for you. He will be the first person we call for our next trip to Oaxaca.Written 20 April 2019
- Dennis B0 contributionsRoberto Gavidia; Highly recommended!!We spent 2 days with Roberto quite recently. When we needed rides to and from the airport, he had his son pick us up. Roberto is a true gentleman and has tremendous knowledge of the area. He's accommodating and timely. When we requested particular artisans, he took us to the best in the area, not the touristy ones. I highly recommend Roberto for tours of the area, as well as his own recommendations.Written 30 March 2019
- Gotravelwithme0 contributionsSpring 2019I have used Roberto twice, once on a trip with my family and the second time on a girls trip with a group of five. He is an articulate, fun guide with a great sense of humor, fluent in Spanish and English and lots of local knowledge and connections. He took us to places tour buses don’t go and attended to all our needs. I highly recommend using his very reasonable services👍😀☀️Written 11 March 2019
- Kathryn D0 contributionsWonderful guide for Oaxaca and the surrounding areas! We hired Roberto for 2 full days for all of the excursions and touring we wanted to do in the surrounding areas. We communicated by email and phone ahead of our trip so we had our itinerary planned, with advice from Roberto about what to do when, and what to skip. He was professional, very knowledgeable, and very easy going and flexible. As others have mentioned he knows a lot of people and has very good connections to a lot of the artisans; he only takes you to the most esteemed craftspeople and there is no pressure to buy anything. I recommend him 100%, and FYI he (or one of sons) can also arrange transport to and from the airport, if needed. Thanks Roberto from Katy and Mike!Written 23 February 2019
- liza_andrade0 contributionsRoberto is the BEST!We scheduled a private car/day with Roberto to take us around town and to some of the best secret shopping locations. He was great, so professional and polite. Very helpful and knew all the spots to hit. We shopped and he took us to the best little spot for lunch.. best tacos, mole and tamales ever. I even scheduled a ride with him to the airport for our departure. I would highly recommend Roberto's Tours for easy and comfortable transportation around Oaxaca. He also gave us a history on Oaxaca which was great :) I'll be booking him again on my next trip to Oaxaca. Thanks again!!Written 20 February 2019
- KismetWoods0 contributionsQuick insight to the wonders of OaxacaMy sister and brothers-in-law and my husband took a quick 4 day trip to Oaxaca. My sister couldn’t have picked a better tour guide to give us a wonderful tour of some of the Artisans, archeological sites, and culture of Oaxaca. Roberto’s command of English, knowledge of the area and its history provided great insight. We highly recommend his services and recommendations.Written 13 February 2019
- Roscoecat270 contributionsSuperb tour guide! We hired Roberto for an entire day and every minute was worth it! One of the great things (among many) about Roberto is how accomodating he is -- he will customize a tour just for you.We told him our interests and he had all kinds of options. Another excellent quality is how incredibly knowledgeable he is. About everything! He took us to a master rug weaver....way off the beaten track, passing several others on our way. This weaver is a true artist -- he gave us a demonstration of how he dyes the yarns with natural dyes (flowers, insects, spices, etc.) and the rugs are spectacular. Another highlight was a 16th century church where Roberto's knowledge of its history added an extra layer of interest to our visit. In fact, his vast knowledge of Oaxacan history and its indigenous people was really the best part of the tour. I can't recommend him highly enough.Written 17 January 2019
- Susan G0 contributions5 Stars are not enough! When we landed in Oaxaca, our hotel was supposed to pick us up. They were nowhere to be found. A gentle, sweet man came up to me to ask who I was looking for and when he heard what happened immediately made a phone call t get us to our hotel. As soon as he spoke, I realized he had been our guide 18 years ago when he worked for a now defunct agency. We had already committed to another company and after a couple of days with them knew we had made a mistake. I called Roberto and he was FABULOUS! Our 2 teenaged grandsons fell in love with him immediately, proclaiming that our other guy has been "a driver, but Roberto is a guide". He is The Best there is so reserve early and prepare to fall in love with him and Oaxaca.Written 5 January 2019
- GoBigandGoHome0 contributionsHighly Professional Service! My family (5 adults) spend the week of Christmas 2018 in Oaxaca. Roberto proved to be a real find. He provided excellent transfer between the airport and our hotel, despite the fact that one plane was rather late and our departures extremely early. We spent a full day with him visiting local artisans and weavers, small villages and tourist sites, including Hierve el Agua. He provided great commentary, assured us we had no obligation to purchase any of the wares and gave us lots of choices about where to go. He is an excellent and careful driver and had a new van with enough room for our large group. We would eagerly work with Roberto again the next time we go to Oaxaca!Written 3 January 2019
- ahabn0 contributionsThe only way to experience Oaxaca!Roberto was highly recommended to us by a friend our ours that frequently visits Oaxaca. He almost harassed us to make sure we booked a couple days with Roberto's tours and now we know why. Roberto is an excellent tour guide, driver, gracious host and a fantastic representative foe the beautiful state of Oaxaca. He was very professional, knowledgable and extremely courteous our requests and time. First off, He picked us up from the airport and was waiting for us right when we exited baggage claims. He helped us into his very spacious and clean Chevy Subarban. As he was driving us to our hotel heave us some recommendations on what we should see and how much time we would need to accomplish it. We already had some sites that we researched and wanted to see, like Monte Alban and Hierva el Agua (the petrified waterfall). Roberto confirmed that those were great sites to see and added that he would love to take us to a craft Mezcal distillery for a tour and tasting. Not all was the tour and tasing awesome, the lunch we had there was one of the best meals we had in Mexico. Outstanding! He also highly recommended a trip to the Village of the Weavers. There we received a private demonstration from a master weaver who heads up 1 of only 5 families is still hand-craft rugs in the ancient ways using wheels, foot-powered looms and natural ingredients to create color dyes. It was so fascinating. Seeing and learning about the process that this man and his family uses to create such beautiful rugs was something my wife and I will never forget. We ended up buying a rug and hanging tapestry from there that we will cherish forever. I could keep going on and on about our trip to Oaxaca and how without Roberto's tour, knowledge and hospitaltity made it so much more enjoyable. All I can say is that if you ever plan on visiting the beautiful city of Oaxaca, you MUST reach out to Roberto's Tours. There is no other way to see everything in this beautiful area.Written 23 December 2018

We selected a two-day tour with Roberto Gavidia because of the positive reviews here: We’re so happy with this choice! About a week before our arrival, we corresponded through email and WhatsApp. He offered his recommendations, which I appreciated because we had never been to Oaxaca before. I was nervous that the whole arrangement was by “handshake”: no down payment or contract to secure the arrangement. But on the morning of our first day with Roberto, he was at our hotel in a clean, comfortable SUV ready to go. His English is excellent and his enthusiasm for Oaxaca is contagious. He is passionate about educating people, which we appreciate, as we would have been unhappy with a guide who just “clocks it in.” We spent two consecutive days with him seeing Monte Alban (he arranged a private tour of the ruins separately), and visited the galleries and studios of excellent artisans of black pottery, green pottery, alebrijes, and textiles. He was patient and also accommodated last-minute changes (we chose to skip Hierva el Agua in favor of visiting more craft artisans). He also took us to beautiful and delicious restaurants en route. He responded immediately on WhatsApp and let us know when he was traffic delayed on his way to pick us up on Day 2. We live in Los Angeles, so we understand last-minute traffic issues, so it wasn’t a problem as he let us know. We were on our own for a few days after our tour, and he checked to see if we had any issues or questions: We felt we had a friend in Oaxaca! We arranged to have him drive us to the airport for our departure: We felt he would be more dependable than any taxi service. Unfortunately, due to illness on our last evening, we postponed our flight for one day. He picked up our call at 4am that morning so that we can tell him not to come to the hotel, and then rearranged things so that his son could take us to the airport the next day. Overall, we understood that he feels personally honor bound to be trustworthy, dependable, honest, fair, and create a wonderful experience for people who come under his care. But, as with all relationships, our positive experience stems from treating him respectfully as our host (not just as a guide) and communicating expectations clearly. Each day, we talked candidly about the hours he would charge (roughly 11 hours each day), so that there were no surprises about the cost at the end. We consider him a friend for life and cannot say enough about how much his welcome and warmth impacted our overall experience of Oaxaca. Mucho gusto, Roberto!

My son and I visited Oaxaco for 3 days. My wife and I had previously visited a few times but my visiting son had not. Our intent was to explore the weaving and rug making workshops as my son has initiated an import business of such products to Taiwan. Roberto was a delightful and informative guide and pre-arranged custom visits and meetings with artisan in Teotitlan de Valle, Mitla and Oaxaca (some I had visited previously). Most significantly he arranged and introduced us to an extraordinary rug weaving family that more than made the whole trip worth it! Roberto was on time, knew where he was going and provided ongoing narrative along the ways...and also took us to Mont Alban on our final day with excellent background on the way and arrange a specialist guide while there!

Wow! Roberto was an impressive guide who filled our hearts and minds with new memories of the Oaxacan people and their history. When I booked with Roberto a few months ago (with my husband and 8 year old son) I had requested a private tour to Teotitlan del Valle, Mitla and Hierve del Agua. Roberto wrote me back quickly, then called me to explain more about the options for the day trip. I knew just from talking with him we would be in great hands. On the day of the trip he picked us up at our Airbnb (large comfortable Suburban) on time and with a big wide smile. The first stop was an off the beaten path weaver in Teotitlan del Valle, Bulmaron Mendoza. We had already received Roberto's wisdom about the more commercial tour outfitters and their practice of taking short cuts and payoffs with lower quality weavers and we could tell this was not going to be our experience. We walked into Bulmaron Mendoza's house and it was a beautiful workshop with a courtyard and educational area. His son led us through a complete demonstration of the dyes, how they are created, and their unique Zapotec origin based on the native plants and insects from the region. We then learned about the different sources of animal fur and plant materials used when creating the yarn, and a bit about the yarn-making process. It didn't take long to find a few tapetes we loved and they were able to ship them back for us. It was a very private, intimate and special experience we will never forget. Roberto waited for us the entire time and then took us to another local artist (contemporary) in Teotitlan named Panteleon Diaz. His workshop and studio were also incredibly impressive. We enjoyed seeing his inspiration come to life across multiple mediums, and at very large scale. By the time we wrapped up in Teotitlan we were starving. Roberto took us to a restaurant at a Mezcal distillery and we enjoyed some mole and guacamole with chapulines. He remained flexible with us as we deviated from the full itinerary and made a choice to return back to Oaxaca City. We saw him again a few days later for a ride back to the airport. Roberto is guaranteed to take you off the beaten path and open your eyes to the beauty of this area. You will make all your friend back home jealous for your once in a lifetime trip with Roberto 😉 Don't miss this!

A very satisfying day with bilingual Roberto. We went to a master weaver's home and, after an insightful explanation of the natural dyes and various natural fibers, were able to buy fine rugs at a very reasonable price from a master who lectures at folk art symposiums in Chicago and New Mexico. We already have orientals from Persia and a Navaho rug and those we were shown are excellent rugs. We also went to a local family shop that makes its own chocolate from cacoa, and were able to participate in a hands on demonstration. Then a fine lunch and a low key Mescal tour and sampling at a small distillery (at my request). Also the tree of Tula, the fascinating exterior of a church which incorporated native temple stones and more. The tour ran over the six hours but Roberto would not hear of any additional fee. No tour bus crowds, an informative narrative and the pleasure of meeting a true gentleman. I will recommend him to family and friends visiting Oaxaca.

Roberto is an incredible human being, two days of sightseeing and he felt like family. Honest, trustworthy, and wonderful gentleman. From the moment we saw him waiting for us at the airport in the evening, we knew we were in wonderful hands! While having trouble trying to find our hiding Airbnb, he talked to our host to locate it and made sure we were safe and sound before he left. The next two days he took us on a wonderful driving tour into the villages to observe a plethora of local artisans. His selections were wonderful, and we never encountered other tourists, so we had lovely one on one experiences. I usually drive all my vacations in the US and abroad and decided to take a break for once. His driving was perfect as he managed some crazy inner-city streets (I'm from the east coast and have in driven in NY often so I know ;-) Everything we chose to do was at our pace and discretion. It was a sad moment for my 21 yr. old son and I when we knew we had to part with Roberto and continue on our journey to Huatulco. If we ever get back, we will look him up for sure! I will tell you he is a must for your visit! He was the best part of ours! <3 Thank you again, Uncle Roberto, Julie & Jake

We booked Roberto for a private tour of Oaxaca's surrounding sites, and Roberto came through like no other. From the day I reached out to him via email/whatsapp he was communicative, informative, and enthusiastic about showing us all that Oaxaca has to offer. He made lots of great suggestions on places that typical tour groups don't visit, such as homes of artists and artisanal weavers, and also took us to the more well travelled spots, like Hierve de Agua, Thule Tree, and Mitla. He was flexible in accommodating to our interests, and even stopped along the way to point out interesting things to us, such as the Benito Juarez Memorial and prehistoric cave paintings. For our trip he picked us up in a Chevy Suburban which was very comfortable and spacious - perfect for the long drive to the waterfall. But what really makes him special is his personality, generosity, and passion for his culture. If you're looking for a private tour, Roberto's your dude.

Roberto was awesome. He took us to exactly where we wanted ( weavers, artisan chocolates and pottery) and even stopped for our lunch and a side trip to Tule. We loved talking with him along the way and meeting his network out in the villages of amazing beautiful people. We leaned so much from him too. Thanks again Roberto !

Roberto is excellent. I booked him based on reviews and he proved to be everything people raved about. He’s very knowledgeable, navigates the crazy Oaxaca traffic with ease and arranged the day to suit our interests. Before our day was over, we were fortunate to be able to book him for a second day. He was unfailingly patient and pleasant . I can’t recommend him highly enough, definitely a highlight of our stay.

Roberto is one of Oaxaca's finest treasures. We had the good fortune of being able to tour with him on 2 days during our visit. He has a wealth of knowledge about his home and its history. His expert driving, recommendations and large, clean SUV are the icing on the cake. Me, my mom and her 2 dear friends were able to set the pace. Some of our stops included a master rug weaver, chocolate artesian, Monte Alban, incredible off the beaten path dining experiences, the home and studio of an incredible sculptor and painter, a family who taught us the tedious and detailed process of creating alebrijes, and a community of cotton weavers with beautifully created items. We enjoyed the sightseeing and shopping so much more because of Roberto’s intimate knowledge of each family's traditions. For example, Roberto explained to us the difference in quality between many of the woven rugs (potentially synthetically dyed and woven with some acrylic) in the city center versus the time consuming process of one family’s collection of all natural dye materials, spinning of the natural fibers, the dyeing process and finally the beautifully detailed weaving process. Roberto made our stay in Oaxaca exceptional!

We are so grateful to have found Roberto the week we were leaving for Oaxaca. I was only able to reserve one day before we left but luckily a second day became available. We would have never been able to see it all in one day. I had my list of must sees and Roberto talked to me before we left so that he could plan the best use of our time. I’m so glad that I listened to him and took his suggestions. His recommended activities far exceeded anything that I had planned. His car was clean and very roomy. We loved have bottle water to start our day. I felt like Roberto truly cared about sharing special parts of Oaxaca that many don’t get to see. At no point did I feel Roberto chose our visits based on personal relationships. My advise to you is take Roberto’s advice on what to see. We visited an Albrejie workshop, 2 weavers workshops, a black pottery studio, artist studio, the Tlacolula, the Tule tree, Hierve el Agua, and we learned how Mezcal was made. Roberto was always early. Even for our 4:40am drive to the airport! While driving us to the different locations he would share interesting history and stories that we would have never known. His knowledge of the area and choice of artisans was the highlight of our trip.
