What a brilliant day! Alvaro met us at the arranged spot with his own car as there were only the 2 of us. We headed out towards Mitla where we stopped in the town and visited the market, next we went to the agave fields where Alvaro explained the growing and harvesting of the crop. Then on to the artisanal distillery where we saw the agave being cooked and tasted it. Then the tasting of the Mezcals, Alvaro explained how to properly taste them and each type was explained thoroughly and a reasonable sized taster was tried, there must have been about 7 or 8 and then another sample of ones we were considering buying. We bought 2 bottles and were very glad we did as the other mezcales that we tried in and around Oaxaca were nowhere near as good and more expensive. Then off we went for a tour and lunch nearby at another (more commercial) distillery. The food and drinks were delicious. After lunch we headed back to the pick up point with Alvaro explaining everything we saw on the way.
A definite must do, made all the better by having Alvaro all to ourselves so we had plenty of time to chat and had all our (very many) questions answered.

    Best Oaxaca Tour!!
Booking a tour with Alvaro is a must if you want to have fun, experience true Oaxaca and learn about the beautiful cultures of Oaxaca from a local. Alvaro made our family feel special from the moment he picked us up. He was so patient with our constant itinerary change. He picked us up in a clean and comfortable car and greeted us with Mezcal. As we drove through the city towards the Mezcal farms he taught us so much about Oaxaca and pointed out interesting facts we never would have learned. He then took us to a textile farm where they showed us how they create beautiful rugs and wall art. Then he took us to a Mezcal farm where he taught us about all the different types of plants and took us to the back to see how it was all made. We got to tast the root of the plant and it was delicious, tasted like a pineapple and sweet potato. Alvaro then ordered our lunch that was AMAZING. He talked to us about the food and of course we drank more Mezcal but for those who don't drink there are natural fruit juices to enjoy too. We then went to a small town and walked around and went to his Mezcal farm that was almost like a museum, it was beautiful. The next day he gave us a tour of El Centro and showed us all the best spots. Alvaro is so kind, smart and best of all he loves to have fun. I can't wait to visit again and hang out with Alvaro. This tour was one of the highlights of our trip. We went with my family 3 of which were in their 70s and my nephew in his 20s and I'm in my 40s so anyone from any age will enjoy touring with Alvaro. Oh and he speaks perfect English and Spanish for anyone who is concerned about the language barrier. He also took amazing pictures of us which we will always cherish.

We had a great day with Alvaro on his Mezcal tour. We picked this tour because my wife is gluten free and Alvaro mentioned that dietary restrictions are catered for, which they were.
It was only a small group of 4 on this day but this allowed for lots of chats with Alvaro and the other couple. We are Australian and spoke no Spanish but this was fine as Alvaro speaks very good English.
We stopped at an artisanal Mezcal distillery outside Mitla and went through the entire Mezcal production process (including chopping some agave ourselves!) and ended up with a comprehensive tasting of 7-8 different styles of Mezcal paired with a fantastic lunch - a stone bowl filled to overflowing with an assortment of grilled meats, cheese and vegetables along with guacamole and corn chips - more than enough food! We may have been a touch “dizzy” (as Alvaro put it) when we were done!
We then drove to the family mezcaleria and tasted their own mezcals from a range of farmed and wild agave. We handmade our own cocktails before going out to look at their agave fields and had a go at trimming the plants with the machete (not so good after a few mezcals!)
We then drove back to Oaxaca at the end of an enjoyable day - thank you Alvaro we had a great day! I would highly recommend this tour

I absolutely loved this whole-day experience. The host was not only super knowledgeable about Me as Cow but also had great energy, was fun, and made the entire day feel smooth and enjoyable. Everything ran like clockwork, and the meal (plus the Mezcal, obviously) was next-level amazing. 100% worth setting aside the day for this. Would definitely recommend!

Alvaro is one of the most skilled mezcal host I’ve ever experienced. He was super friendly and so dedicated to show us the ins and outs of the Artisanal Mezcal making process. I was able to taste all the different variations the region offers paired with impeccable hospitality from Alvaro and Mal de Amor Mezcaleria.

Today all my friends and family see my advice when it comes to the flavors of Agave spirits, and I hold dear all the memories and friendships we made during this trip. Thank you brother I hope to see you one day again.

Had a wonderful time with Alvaro and all the new friends I made on this trip. As a solo traveller this was the perfect introduction to the city of Oaxaca as well as getting to experience Mezcal the right way. From going to the distillery’s and the fields Alvaro had this experience planned to the T and planned very well!
I’d recommend this tour to absolutely anyone and everyone!

This was an exceptional tour! It was amazing to walk through the distilleries, tasting rooms and agave farms. Alvaro was attentive and informative. We even stopped to learn about the Zapotec peoples and culture. A truly beautiful time. If you like a more personal and intimate tour, I suggest touring with Alvaro. It's obvious he takes pride in what he does and does it at a fair price. And of course, the mezcals are delicious!

Excellent tour. We visit a mezcslería where they make mezcal in a traditional way. Our guide (Irving) explained the different varieties of agave, went through the production process and then tasted up to 8 types of mezcal. We end up tasting jerky and appraisal aids. 100% recommended tour.

Alvaro was a fantastic host. He is not only knowledgeable about Mezcal but incredibly proud and passionate about the industry. His ‘palenque’ is family owned and could not be more authentic. After trying over 10 different styles of mezcal, he took us to another distillery where we enjoyed a wonderful authentic Oaxacan lunch. In addition we stopped at a textile cooperative where we learned the process of making hand spun wool to make rugs. What an incredible talent!
His tour was one of my favorite experiences during our trip! Thank you Alvaro! - Christina
