We landed in Tuxtla and were on our way to San Cristobal. Stopped in Chiapa de Corzo and took boat down the amazing Sumidero Canyon all the way to the dam. It is impressive with it's massive walls and wildlife. We did see crocodiles and spider monkeys which I understand is common in the canyon. The boat ride is informative and the driver stops frequently to discuss different geological and natural elements of the canyon. Loved the town of Chiapa de Corzo and make sure to see the beautiful moorish -influenced structure in the town square.

So beautiful, an amazing experience and a perfect day! Almost didn't see it because of the wind, so it is not always a guaranteed excursion. The government can close it, even if it is a beautiful day, but the winds are higher. They opened after we thought we would miss it. Don't miss it!

No criticisms from us. Pickup was fine. Our guide spoke excellent English (and fellow travelers as well). Our guide explained everything to us before the boat trip so we would have some idea of what was happening since the boat driver spoke no English. The canyon was spectacular. All good.

The moment we neared the boat landing we were bombarded by salespeople selling tours for the Cañón de Sumidero. Because we didn’t know we hired a boat for 1200mxn (5 people) to take us on the tour (leaving from Chiapa del Corzo). We were promised an amazing tour where we’d see tons of wildlife, the cañón as well as other points of interest, but it turns out that they only take you to the entrance point of the cañón where security checks people for wristbands to actually enter the Cañón part. When we arrived to the checkpoint the boat driver turned around and told us that we were heading back because he didn’t have a license to enter the actual Cañón. So what did we see? We had a 45 min boat ride each way, saw 1 crocodile and no amazing cañón walls and then were pressured into giving a nice tip to the boat driver for seeing basically nothing. It definitely wasn’t what we were expecting and would never recommend leaving from Chiapa del Corzo. We ended up taking another tour the next day from the Cahuares embarcadero which is so much better, and we actually got to see the amazing Cañón and a lot of wildlife. So save your money and avoid leaving from Chiapa del Corzo and just go to the Cahaures Embarcadero.

We are two tourists who speaks little Spanish and we were excited to see the canyon. Pick up was fine and the boat ride was great, but really what they provide was transport there and nothing else. On the way back driver picked up 5 more people and said we will all head back to San cristobal ( where out hotel is). However he started heading to tuxtla to drip off the other passengers. Instead of a 1 hour rerun, we spent 2.5 hrs in the bus for nothing. Please do not combine your trips to safe a few bucks. If we had known this we'd have just taken a taxi or combi. I do not recommend the service. You can just go to canyon yourself.

The Sumidero canyon is beautiful and should be on everyone's itinerary if you are in Tuxtla or San Cristobal. The boat ride was good. We did not understand any of the explanations as we don't follow Spanish. That said we enjoyed the views.
The return trip in the van from Sumidero to San Cristobal was a disaster. There was a communication failure between Viator, Ecoexperiencias and the van driver. Before getting into the van CONFIRM the trip itinerary and whether the guide can speak English.
We had booked a 1/2 day trip to Sumidero and Corzo with a guide in English. Firstly the van driver did not know English. After Corzo we realized that 1/2 the folks in the van were on a full day itinerary to visit Sumidero, Corzo and 2 View points of the canyon and a 90 mins break for lunch.
Through difficult communication we got the van driver to arrange for alternate mode of transportation that arrived at 4.00 PM.
Our trip was supposed to end in San Cristobal at 2.30, but ended at 5.00 PM.
Before boarding the van CONFIRM the itinerary and that the driver knows English.

This was an amazing tour! 2 hours long on boat to the end of the canyon. I took a 2 year old and he slept most of the way. We saw crocodiles up close and monkeys. Our boat tour guide got us under the xmas tree and enjoyed the waterfall. I highly recommend this instead of overlooking the canyon tour. No pee stops so consider that.

We went in a group of 4, tickets to go on the boat just cost 36MXN but the driver will ask for a tip half way through the trip. They also give you the opportunity to buy snacks and beer in the water. We had some awesome views of the canyon and saw some wild animals: crocodile, monkeys, leguanas, birds.
Views were stunning. I recommend to bring a hat that cannot fall off in the water, lots of sunscreen and go to the bathroom before the ride!
Boats also go during rains season from august to october.

This is definitely worth doing if you go to Chiapas. The van-based packages work well. From your hotel to the launch point is about an hour drive from San Cristobal. The boat ride is a 32km run that takes about an hour and 45 minutes outbound, with some brief stops for explanations from the guide, then about an hour back. The boats are open air with classroom style seating for about 30. Beautiful scenery, cool breeze while the boat is moving, and you see some monkeys, birds and crocs along the way.

The town of Chiapa de Corzo is pretty ordinary, with a modern zocalo. Tourist trinket shops of airport quality line the square. Go for the tour where you stay here only an hour because it’s not worth more - especially if you are spending time in San Cristobal where the quality and range of handicrafts etc is a million times better. Use the time to get a drink and tacos or quesadilla in the square. You’ll be back in San Cristobal around 3:30.

This is a MUST. if you are visiting San Cristobal de las Casas or Tuxtla Gutierrez, This is a trip that you must take, first visit the viewpoints and then you go up to a speedboat. the distance covered is 40 Kilometers. You must wear a good hat and a large amount of sunscreen
