Overview
The archaeological site of Muyil is located in the northern part of the Sian Ka'an Biosphere reserve. This ancient Mayan trading post is the perfect place to enjoy astounding Mayan temples such as the 17 meters (57 ft) building known as El Castillo in the incredibly diverse semi-deciduous forest of Sian Ka'an. From the archaeological site you will take an interpretive trail towards the tallest observation point of Sian Ka'an to admire the exuberant vegetation of the jungle and the fresh water wetlands. Once you reach the Muyil lagoon, you will take a boat across two lagoons connected by an artificial canal that has been in use for many centuries. Xlapak is the name of the building at the beginning of the lazy river and the start of an incredible floating experience in crystal clear pluvial water on its way to the Caribbean ocean. You will float for over 30 minutes surrounded by mangroves, orchids, bromeliads. A delicious vegetarian picnic with seasonal fruits is included in the tour.
Highlights
  • An in-depth tour of Muyil ruins and lagoon
  • Get a firsthand peek at the off-the-beaten-track archaeological site
  • Delve deep inside Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-listed site
  • Enjoy a lagoon boat ride and vegetarian picnic lunch (included)
What to Expect
The ruins of Muyil, an ancient Maya trading port on the Mexican Caribbean, are part of Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, the region’s largest protected area and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During this in-depth guided tour, you’ll explore both nature and culture, making time for both centuries-old artifacts and a nature-filled cruise across a lagoon.

Departing from Tulum, you’ll get a firsthand peek at world-famous Maya temples, such as the 57-foot (17-meter) building known as El Castillo. Admire the diverse, semi-deciduous forest of Sian Ka’an, which makes for an incredible backdrop to the ruins.

Once you’ve explored the site, you’ll follow a lush jungle trail through the reserve to Muyil lagoon. Board a boat and glide across the crystal-clear water along a canal that has been in use for centuries and which leads into the Caribbean Sea. Listen to different birdsongs as you admire the spectacular wetlands, where you’ll see exotic vegetation, such as mangroves, orchids, and cacti. End the visit with fresh fruit and a delicious vegetarian picnic lunch before heading back to Tulum.

No steep walking. The steps up the lookout are steep but the climb is optional. Belongings are secure in the vehicle or with the boat operator. It was a great tour
