Learning the history of cacao and its importance in the Mayan culture was very interesting. Our guide, Mártin, was very knowledgeable and informative during the whole experience and he made the entire experience completely enjoyable! And we made our own chocolate (no surprise my wife's came out better than mine) the ancient mayan way and it was delicious! And then followed that with making our own chocolate margarita that was also delicious! We did not book this tour through our cruise, we just hopped in a taxi at the port for the ride there ($40.00 RT) and bought tour tickets directly from the Mayan Cacao Company, $45.00 each and well worth it to us. $135 total which I believe is cheaper than the cruise ship price and we got to do it on our schedule without being in a large group. For our chocalate and margarita making portion it was just me and my wife and our guide Mártin. It was a very enjoyable experience for us.

Roberto Palma, our tour guy, is a gem and an asset to The Mayan Cocoa Company. He created an enriching environment and was very attentive with everyone. We had a great experience and enjoyed it so much we would recommend the journey to our family and friends.

On a side note, there were two staff members that did not share the same passion as the reset of the Mayan Cocoa Company; however, they were not essential to the tour.

We went on their first day opening post coronavirus lockdown and were their first tour. Everyone wore masks and we used hand sanitizer at every building of the tour. We did the cacao and margarita tour with 4 adults and 3 children (yes kids get to make virgin chocolate margaritas!) I felt safe the entire time.

First I highly recommend doing both in the tour! The cost of adding the margarita in is minimal. The chocolate tour gives a fascinating history of cacao throughout the Mayan empire as well as some information on Día de Muertos. Angel was our tour guide and he was full of information.

At the end of the tour we made our own chocolate to take home and then made a chocolate margarita, with the kids making a virgin version. One ingredient is milk in the margarita - about 1 shots worth - and they provide lactose free milk.

Afterwards check out the gift shop and take home some of their amazing chocolate products as well as local crafts.

Well worth the time and money!

Bought tickets for the tour online and hired a taxi.
I went with a girlfriend and left husbands at the condo.
Mario was our tour guide for 1 1/2 hours.
Highly recommend Mario. He was extremely knowledgeable, spoke very good English and the tour was fun and educational.
I’ve been visiting Mexico for 14 years and this was the best excursion experience
Learned all about the history of the cacao plant, history if the Mayans and made a chocolate margarita.
If looking for a tour for couple of hours this is the excursion for you. Chocolate workshop and margarita workshop was only $45 USper person

Ask for Mario as your guide.
He should be promoted to management he’s that good

Unless you are on a cruise, they are unwilling to sell you a tour. I tried calling for 3 days to be sure they were open because of the pandemic and no one answered the phone. When we went with a reservation through our hotel it was not the tour we wanted and they were unwilling to accommodate and blamed it in the hotel. That is $20 in a taxi ride and time wasted on our last day in Cozumel. I'm sure the tour would have been great, but we'll never know because I won't waste my time again.

Dear 212tracim, It is with deep regret that we read your comment, as this is not our usual way of delivering incredible experiences to all our many visitors through the years. We have conducted a proper session of conversations with our staff and found this has been a logistics error that was handled in a sub-par manner. Please know that this mistake is not taken lightly and we have undertaken corrective measures so this inconsistency is not repeated in the future. Within the possibilities I would like to invite you to visit us again in your next visit to Cozumel, and allow us to show you the real The Mayan Cacao Company experience, as our special invitee, along with your family. Please be sure that your feedback is of paramount importance for us and this helps us continue our path towards excellence. If you would like to further communicate we will be glad to know your thoughts, please send us a letter if you want: ventas@themayancacaocompany.com and our Commercial Director will be in touch. Thank you again for letting us know a growth opportunity. We send you our warmest thoughts and hope to have you home again in the near future. Sincerely, The Mayan Cacao Family

Mario was awesome. He taught us how to count in Mayan, he shared a lot about the Mayan culture and also different plants/seasonings. We great enjoyed our time then we sampled traditional tamales with mole (uh-mazing). In the kitchen we crushed cacao and made our own chocolate discs then we made chocolate margaritas (non-alcoholic) if preferred. Uh-mazing! Our last stop was the sample table in the store. We were treated to various tastes and gained an appreciation for the different combinations.

An interesting visit, firstly seeing someone in national dress. We didn’t, see much of the village, but had a demonstration of how the chocolate was made after being given a rather weak chocolate drink. We then had a demonstration of how the chocolate was made. Then it was tasting time and there were about two dozen different flavours, and I tasted them all and they were delicious.
Unfortunately our tour was rather rushed as I would have liked to spend more time browsing, around the different areas.

We were supposed to spend the day diving, but the port was closed due to weather. In search of something to do, we made our way to the Mayan Cacao Company and participated in the Chocolate and Margarita workshop and tour. Our tour guide, Mario, was an absolute pleasure. He shared so much information and assisted us with making both chocolate and the chocolate margaritas. This was so much fun that we did not mind missing out on diving.

This was an insanely fun experience. Highly recommended. I loved grinding the cocoa nibs and making our own chocolate bars. Our host Marrrrrtin was friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. He really made the tour fun. We took our older teens on this tour, and they also had a great time. They want to "make" chocolate again.

My friend and I did the Chocolate making and Margarita workshop. It was just the two of us with a guide, Angel. He was such a good guide - personable, knowledgeable, attentive. It started with a brief introduction to Mayan culture, as well as walking us through the importance of Cocao in their culture and the process they would use. The workshop was a lot of fun. It was pretty cool (and much simpler than I expected) to make your own chocolate the Mayan way, with all natural ingredients and a pretty good glass of wine on the side, followed by a delicious chocolate margarita that we made and that I will definitely make at home sometime. All in all, an experience well worth it!
