About
The ultimate backcountry trip, few folks ever get to experience a place like this. Sky-piercing mountains stretch out across the landscape, their peaks crusted with ice and snow. The air is cool and fresh. And best of all, there’s an almost zen-like quiet out here. On this six-day, five night trip you’ll pass by the shimmering waters of the Bow River, travel along a historic pack trail and then ride up Allenby Pass, where jagged rock formations line the route. And although you do climb to an elevation of 8,100 feet on this trip, the terrain is gentle for the entire way. And for all the rugged scenery you’ll get to gaze at on this trek, the adventure itself is far from ‘roughing it.’ Unwind in rustic luxury at the spacious Sundance Lodge and later at the cozy Halfway Lodge – both quintessential mountain cabins with comfortable beds. Please note that this trip departs on Sundays and Thursdays from late June to early September.

I was nervous when packing to leave for this trip, but once we were there all that anxiety went away. There were 6 of us ranging in various ages & riding experience. The entire staff was excellent along with the accommodations. It was so relaxing I hope to do it again.

My spouse and I went on the 6 day lodge trip as part of our honeymoon. It was an amazing trip. It is truly the best way to experience the Canadian Rockies. The views are simply breathtaking.

As beginner riders, we did have our share of aches and pains; however, it was so worth it.

Our guides were incredibly knowledgeable, had great stories and were very enjoyable to be with. You can easily tell that they love their horses and that they know them well.

The food was amazing! From steaks, burgers and hot dogs (“smokies”) in the backcountry for lunch, to salmon, ribs, ham, and chicken for supper. All the food was so good.

We went on the last trip in September and we were blessed with perfect weather. Layering really helps. We had no mosquitoes or flies. It was great.

Our group of 8 got the chance to see mountain sheep, a herd of elk, pikas, and the common squirrels.

This is not a stay at the fairmont hôtel. Guests should not expect that. It is still a ride in the backcountry with your supplies being limited to your 30lb bag which is brought up to the cabins for you by a rider and his pack of mules. (A feat to behold). You are also able to carry items in your saddlebags. Having said that, they work incredibly hard to make this as luxurious as a backcountry trip can be.

The lodges are great. We were incredibly spoiled at Sundance lodge with full lighting and indoor washrooms with showers. At Halfway lodge, there are no indoor washrooms, but they do have a really cool outdoor shower with, again, an amazing view. Definitely something to experience. Beds at both cabins are super comfortable and cozy.

On the fourth day, we went on a hike, and it was totally worth it. Unlike what is written on the website, it is NOT a leisurely hike. It is quite challenging with a steep incline but we highly recommend doing it. Eating lunch at “Lake Matthias” (Sorry Erica) was really peaceful and another great experience.

I could go on and on about it but I will close it off here saying that we highly recommend it. The horses, staff, and setting are awesome. You also get to know your group quite well as it is not a large group.

My 75 year old mother, a cousin, and I took the 6 day Halfway Lodge trip. I highly recommend it, and will do it again! The staff are hardworking, fun, and obviously love what they do. Made the trip even more special. If you want to see turquoise glacial rivers, eat amazing food, prop your feet up in front of a wood fire, and ride horses all day - this trip is for you.

Each day was more magical than the next - snow in Allenby Pass, many river crossings, and stunning vistas at every turn.

The beds at both Halfway and Sundance Lodges were quite comfy - and the outdoor shower at Sundance, although primitive, was worth the view.

Special thanks to Kayla, our guide - you've never seen a harder working young woman! Her skills in building a campfire for searing steak, or making hot chocolate, second to none. Emily and Merrilea were both amazing cooks for our meals at the lodges, and Heather, Mattias and Scott, all did amazing work packing our mules and saddling us up each morning.

Helpful hints: I brought a solar powered battery charger to keep my phone going. Of course, no connectivity, but I was using it as my camera. Also, consider purchasing a saddle pad to ease into riding 4 or more hours a day. Most importantly, carefully read the preparation documentation they provide - it'll save you on grief later. Bring at least $50 a day, per person for tip. The staff pool the tips, and share out for the trip.

This was my first trip with BTR and the 6-day Halfway Lodge experience lived up to all the hype! I loved every minute of it. Being a beginner rider, I quickly felt comfortable with the horses and trusted them on all trails and types of terrain. Our guide Kayla was great - competent, friendly and easy-going... and made the best coffee on the trail! Both of the lodges were beautiful - scenic and comfortable. I can't say enough about all the staff (the cooks, packers and other guides) were all very welcoming and friendly: Merilee, Heather, Olivia, Emily, Tessa, Mattias, Mitch, and Scott. We loved talking to them and hearing stories about the area and especially about the horses and mules (shout out to the most perfect lunch-mule, Katie!) We also enjoyed meeting the other members of our group who were lovely to travel with. The accommodations were perfect - stunning views, comfortable beds and amazing food!! The week went by much too quickly and we were all sad to return to the stable on that Friday afternoon! Thank you BTR for a most memorable trip!

I'm just home again from the 6-day Halfway Lodge ride. This is my 3rd time riding with BTR. When we rode back on Friday afternoon, I would happily have turned around and gone right back to do it all over again. The organization, guides, cooks, packers, scenery, terrain, and horses all - could not have been better. The guide, Kayla, was knowledgeable, friendly, and professional. Every meal was so delicious and everyone on the ride (6 guests & guide) enjoyed the family-type atmosphere around the table. The weather on our Allenby Pass day was perfect - we actually made it all the way to the lunch spot and were so amazed to see the herd of Bighorn Sheep. The hike on the next day is quite challenging but definitely worth the effort. Thank you to everyone for the memories and soul food.
Count me in -- I'll be back!!

I'm just home from the 6 day Halfway Lodge trip. WOW. It's not a trip I'll soon forget - that's for sure!
We had a group of 7 women - 4 of us in our 50's and 3 daughters in their 20's. All of us have plenty of experience riding. We were matched up with awesome horses on the first day and set off on a fairly easy trail. The first night we stayed in the Sundance Lodge which has indoor plumbing and comfy beds. The rooms each have one double bed and a set of bunk beds. The next day the riding is a bit more challenging with narrow trails and steeper inclines (and if you get lucky, you see a bear like we did!) but then you arrive at Halfway Lodge and are blown away by the beauty and tranquility! This lodge is much smaller and very cozy. There's no indoor plumbing but there IS an amazing outdoor shower that one person in our group called "magical". The next day riding we didn't make it all the way to the top of Allenby Pass because of snow (at the end of June!!) but the ride and scenery were incredible.
There is one non-riding day and if you are up for a challenge, your guide may take you up to an un-named lake. The hike is VERY challenging, but oh so worth the effort!!
Our guides were Tess and Hana - both unbelievably capable and wonderful. Our Halfway Lodge cook, Emily, was the sweetest but her cooking...OMG! Her stuffing was better than my Mom's!
I could go on forever about this trip but I think its safe to say, it's worth EVERY PENNY and then some.

I did the 6 day lodge tour. It was lovely--pretty scenery, gentle horses, and comfortable accommodations. The trip felt very safe. The ride up Allenby Pass and the rest-day hike were stunning.

It is a big company that runs multiple tours per week, and it definitely felt a bit impersonal and Disney-esque, like they were churning out tourist experiences. I had trouble getting detailed information before the trip (when I called the number on the website on two separate occasions, the people I spoke to said they were desk operators and didn't know the answers to my questions). On the tour, the staff were all sweet, but young and somewhat unprofessional, gossiping about their bosses, colleagues, and bad guests over dinner and during downtime. It was awkward hearing them complain about other guests. On the one slightly similar tour I've done in the past, the staff made a point of talking with guests on the trail and in the evenings, so I was a little disappointed that they didn't on this trip.

I did feel like the difficulty of the trip is overstated. If you have much experience in the backcountry or on horseback, it will likely feel too tame (you travel a maximum of ~35km from town, and due to park regulations and the rocky terrain, all riding is done at the walk). If you are new to either or both, however, this is a safe, fun introduction surrounded by some beautiful scenery.

The six day trip was wonderful. Our guides Lucie and April took excellent care of us. The cooks at the lodges provided excellent meals. Once we left the ranch we were quickly transported to the forest on our amazing horses. They were well trained. The views were great and even more so as we rode the Allenby Pass. We could fill our water bottles in the rivers. The beds at the lodges were comfortable and the lodges clean. One lodge provided indoor bathrooms only at night (because of bears) and the other lodge had only out houses. The outdoor shower is an experience at Half Way Lodge.
The ride was a great experience!!

Where does one start? Well first of all a big thanks to Britney our guide! Looked after us like a true pro even though it was her first 6 day trip too. At no time did we feel unsure or not looked after. This woman is a gem and Trail Riders are lucky to have her! The other staff we met were great too! Another big thanks to the rest of our group as you really made it! Certainly the dynamic and pot luck of the people you get on this trip can have a huge impact and we got very lucky. We had a blast, so many laughs!
If you are unsure don't worry. You get used to the outhouse toilets pretty quick. The single outdoor shower at the halfway lodge is one of the best showers in the world and has to be experienced.
The horses were all great and I was amazed how heavy a Western Saddle is. More points to Britney for lugging them around every morning and evening.
I'll give some tips now from my experience -

Go prepared for rain and cold, just in case. We got snow in July!
Don't pack masses of clothing for riding, just wear old stuff up as it will get dirty and you are all in the same boat. I would also not recommend wearing traditional western riding gear unless its guaranteed sunshine. Pack modern riding gear as it handles rain and mud far better. Those $300 new cowboy boots could get pretty trashed! Yeah it doesn't look so cool but being wet and cold isn't either. Leave all your dozens of hair care products behind. Wear a helmet or a good hat. Pack the mozzy repellent. Pack a good scarf. You get a couple of decent sized bags to attach to your saddle for drinks/snacks/sprays etc. I used a 80 litre wetsack for my gear. My other half used a 60 litre. We kept to the weight limit. Take a quick drying gym towel! Take a small bottle of hand sanitiser each. Pack two pairs of gloves and make sure one are a thin pair of quick drying gloves!

Use a camera with a neck strap or put one on your phone. You do not want to drop it! I bought a old Lumix LX3 on Ebay rather than my phone and it worked a treat.

Don't do this ride with zero experience. I had at least a year in prep for this and did a few outdoor day rides etc. I felt perfectly confident but a real novice might think twice.

Brace for a blast of a good time and go with the flow. Fantastic.

Oh and say hi to Phil the marmot when you see him!

We have just returned from an incredible 6 day trip with our guide, Brie, who was fantastic! Our horses were some of the best horses we've ridden (Roy and Millet) and were well-behaved, well cared for and secure and safe on all types of conditions including snow on Allenby Pass on July 3! Laura at Sundance and Brook at Halfway fed us extremely well (delicious baked goods along with bfast & dinner!), along with Brie who always did a great job starting a fire and cooking meals out on the trail. Mitch and the other mule drivers worked hard to get supplies to the lodges and we enjoyed Mitch's stories around the dinner table. The lodges were both comfortable and unique. Amazing scenery and our best horseback trip yet, definitely a 10!

We have been riding about 2 years (weekly lessons and a 6 day dude ranch last year) so I would recommend a little riding experience for the 6 day, but if you are waivering between the 6 day and 4 day, definitely sign up for the 6 day!

Lastly, some packing tips. We saw that it was supposed to rain a bit (and it did, along with snow!) so purchased waterproof duffel bags last minute. The bag was kept dry the whole time but we were glad to have this as a backup. I took a pair of Uggs to wear inside the lodge which was nice, but slipper socks or other slippers would've sufficed. A pair of flip flops or slip-on shoes (flats) to go outside to the bathroom/outdoor shower is helpful (even in the cold). Hiking shoes is recommended for the 6 day as you may have a chance to go on a beautiful hike (along with trekking poles if you use them). Rain pants are helpful even thought the slickers they let us borrow were excellent. Bug spray is a must along with sunblock. Layers (I wore a tshirt, long sleeve shirt/flannel, vest, Patagonia puff jacket, and light barn coat for the cold/rainy days and was comfortable) along with a pair of jeans (and a pair of padded bike shorts on some days). Make sure to spray your boots with waterproof spray prior to the trip! We wore helmets which kept our head warm. When it wasn't cool/cold, (it was 27C/80F one day) a tshirt and jeans was perfect. I brought 3 pairs of jeans but could've gone with 2 pairs, a pair of "comfy" pants for the evenings.

Enjoy!
