Ice climbing for the over 40’s set: read this!
Feb 2021 • Couples
We are glad we went. We both managed two successful climbs (the opportunity is there for many more climbs, we just chose to stop after two) and got great pics for our experience scrapbook so take this with a grain of salt: My husband and I are in our fifties and after visiting multiple canyons in Banff, LL, Yoho and Jasper, we thought this would be a fun experience. We booked the group tour with Jen and Alejandro and went to Tangle Falls. It's a beautiful location about an hour from Jasper. We probably should have booked a private lesson. Maybe the Covid precautions threw off the flow, or maybe Jen and Alejandro don't work together often. Both were very nice and experienced individually but their chemistry seemed off as team and they didn't have a cohesive plan for the teaching part of the experience. We learned that ice climbing can be very dangerous and covering a few basics in a haphazard way ends in bumps and bruises but thankfully nothing worse. Again, this is coming from someone well out of their 20's and 30's so our perspective is different and this review is directed at an older group. If you asked the 20 somethings in our group, they loved the "here are the basics; go climb!" approach. We needed a bit more attention to detail.
Would I recommend Rockaboo? Yes, but, pay attention and remember your safety is your responsibility first. Don't be shy if your crampons keep falling off, or if you are way off the line and are about to swing like a pendulum across the face of the ice. The guides are keeping their eyes on five or six different people, so they might miss something.
Some thoughts that may help you for a future trip: Clothing: Layer your coats so you have one lighter one to climb in and one heavy layer to belay in or stand around in. Same with gloves: at least 2 pair, one lighter one for climbing and one heavy for belaying. Hat: no pom poms bc you need a safety helmut to go over it. A note on boots: Rockaboo will provide you with boots (we went with the leather boots and were not cold at all). My recommendation is to try on your boots, make sure they fit but then put your own boots back on until you get to the falls. Its an hour away, at least, and these boots are inflexible (for good reason) and if you are driving your own car it's not really a good idea to drive in them.
Hopefully, this helps get you up on the ice!

Did a private climb (with wife and son, aged 9) in the Upper Maligne Canyon under the supervision of Max, owner of Rockaboo and a very experienced mountain rescue guide. Loved it and Max made us all feel very safe and secure. Highly recommended!

Managed to get onto a private ice climbing day with a very kind Belgian family - Max was a great guide and made the day very entertaining and rewarding. If you want to give the slopes a miss for a day and want to try something new - the ice climbing in Maligne Canyon is a great way to spend a day in Jasper. Thanks again !

Ice Climbing
Mar 2019 • Friends
Firstly i must thank Rockaboo for their wonderful kindness (as well as the other 4 guests) in waiting on us as our train arrived 18hrs late into Jasper n we almost missed this adventure.

Overall it was v enjoyable for us but i would have enjoyed it even more if a couple of thgs were better.

I was given impression we would be hiking in an area as beautiful as maligne canyon to reach the ice climb spot but it was not.

We were not advised well on how tight a fit our shoes had to be n that we had to lace up well as this proved instrumental on being able to climb with the shoes. In other sports n walks where shoes n equipment were provided, our guides checked n corrected all our shoes n equipment after we put on everythg. We ended up with shoes that did not fit well n could not lace up well which resulted in us not being able to lift ourselves up as our feet kept coming out of our climbing shoes.

The important role of the belayer could have been explained a little more in detail especially about watching closely the person you are belaying instead of only enjoying the surrounding or smooching with your partner while belaying.

Thank you once again for a wonderful experience n i will definitely ice climb agn, now that i know better.

Ice Climbing in Jasper

If your looking for adventure in Jasper Rockaboo Mountain Adventures is the company for you. I highly recommend trying the ice climbing. Max was a phenomenal guide/coach who motivates and encourages you the entire climb while keeping you extemly safe. We climbed Tangle Falls in -27 degrees but stayed warm with the sun beating down on us. It was incredible to hear the water running under the ice as you climbed the falls, along with the stellar mountain views which made for a perfect day. Thanks Rockaboo for this amazing experience.

Iceclimbing: Awesome experience!
Dec 2018 • Friends
On the 29th of December I went iceclimbing at Tangle Falls with a Dutch group, two Canadians and an American. Never did iceclimbing before, but I had some experience in climbing. I got to do all the tracks and at the end Max motivated me to go all the way. Standing on top of the frozen falls was a personal victory for me and an incredible experience!!Max and Jonas from Rackaboo did a great job as instructors. They were really kind, patient and professional and they even got people with fear of heights to climb! On the way back we had a small party in the van and danced on Icefield Parkway since the road was closed and we had to wait a while! It was a great day, which I will never forget! Thank you so much Rockaboo!
