Overview

Join a small-group tour and hike down into the gorges of Maligne Canyon. This hike takes you past unusual geological formations, behind frozen waterfalls, and into caves made of ice. Explore the deepest canyon in the Canadian Rocky Mountains with a guide who helps you discover the area and provides lots of fascinating facts about Jasper and its history.

What to Expect

Arrange to be picked up from your hotel or meet your guide at the downtown tour offices for the ride to Maligne Canyon, the deepest accessible gorge in the Canadian Rockies. Dress warmly for the experience, which runs in the morning or in the afternoon, for your convenience. Winter boots and ice cleats are provided for your trek across the frozen river.

Explore ice caves and frozen waterfalls from the valley floor, as your guide tells the story of the gorge, the geology that formed it, and the history of the area.

The Maligne Canyon ice walk is an active way to spend a few hours—not all the winter activities in Jasper involve the ski hills! You will end the tour at your selected drop-off point in town.

Great Guide

We did the Maligne River Canyon ice walk on March 10th. My wife was concerned since she broke her ankle slipping on ice a few years ago. Alicia, our guide, couldn't have been better. She stayed with my wife, Carol, throughout the walk helping and...More

We really enjoyed ourselves here, the views were breathtaking and the tour guide was such a delight to listen to and talk to. This was a very rewarding experience. This was so worth taking the time to do!

Stunning and informative.

I've visited Maligne canyon several times in the summer, and the thought of getting onto the riverbed where it's normally inaccessible was the temptation. The guide was great, warm and friendly and at no point did I feel like tourist who's a liability ( a...More

Would highly recommend booking this excursion, some of the most stunning frozen rivers and waterfalls which you can walk on (depending on the climate) and touch. The canyon is amazing, it requires a little effort but definitely rewarding. The guides are super friendly and helpful...More

I’m pretty sure the ice is year round. It’s an amazing trek with some incredible formations, but definitely take a tour guide. I recommend Sundog tours. Ask for Pat as your guide!!

Well my wife and I are in our late 60's. We are fairly fit for our age. There was some climbing to the cave. A little of it somewhat steep. The cave area was slippery in places, but not bad. We didn't find it very hard.
