Fantastic tour with a personal touch!
Sep 2021
I highly recommend Michael and his wonderful tour of the Fraser Valley wine region! My partner and I chose to book this tour after doing extensive research on several different Vancouver area winery tour options. We chose this tour for two main reasons: 1) Unlike some of the other wine tasting tours we researched, there was no minimum number of guests required for the tour to operate. Our tour had just one other group of 3 people, and the small group experience was absolutely preferable to my partner and I--we are not the large party bus types. 2) This was the only tour we found that included a meadery. We love mead, and wanted this more unusual experience which can’t be found just anywhere.

Michael himself was a wonderful tour guide. He picked us up right in front of our hotel, and peppered our bus ride with multiple interesting facts about the Vancouver area and Fraser Valley wine region. It quickly became clear that Michael has personal relationships with the owners of each of the wineries that we visited, which resulted in learning a lot about the fascinating history of each winery (and meadery). Michael also engaged in conversation with each of us throughout the tour, and getting to know Michael personally gave the tour a personal touch that stands out from other similar tours I have experienced. Michael even gave us a recommendation for an absolutely incredible Malaysian restaurant (Banana Leaf), which we would not have discovered otherwise. We ended up having one of the most memorable meals there out of our entire 7 day trip!

Note that the cost of this tour does not include tasting fees, something we were aware of beforehand. However, we were pleasantly surprised to discover that the meadery did not charge us any tasting fees because of the great relationship they have with Michael. Impressive!

The only negative aspect of the tour was that it did not include lunch, like we’d hoped. Apparently this was because the restaurant that used to be part of the tour closed down due to COVID--something that can’t be helped, obviously. To make up for this, Michael did pack us a nice bag of snacks in place of lunch, which we greatly appreciated.

In total, we visited 3 wineries (Backyard, Township 7, Blackwood Lane) plus the meadery (Festina Lente) over the course of 5-6 hours. Each of these had very different tasting menus, which gave us a wonderfully wide variety of wines and meads to try. We live very close to Napa, Sonoma, and several other fabulous California wine regions, and the selection of wineries we visited in the Fraser Valley completely held their own against California wines. If and when we ever return to Vancouver, we will certainly consider booking another tour with Lawrence Tours.

A good tour for wine tasting
Feb 2020
Michael is a knowledgeable guide and we enjoyed our tour. Snack packs were a nice touch - but also a necessity when lunch comes at the end of all the tastings.

Our fault for not reading the description as closely as we should have before booking, but we were shocked to find that the tasting fees were not included for the price that we paid.

Also a little dismayed to find another couple on the trip benefitting by not having to pay a tasting fee because of the wine I purchased - while members in our party still were charged.

Enjoyable tour and a great guide
Oct 2019
Michael was our driver/guide in mid-October and we had a great time. Ended up just my Wife and myself on the with Michael, so a private tour for the price of a group tour. We visited 3 Fraser Valley wineries and then had lunch at a First Nations run cafe.
As a Californian who has visited the top CA wine regions many times, the BC wines were not to my liking style-wise, but the hosts were informative and proud of their wines.
Michael also gave us lots of insight into the area, the culture and history. In the end, because a 2-person tour doesn't take as long as a 12-person full bus would, Michael took us to a family-run ice cream parlor, maybe the most flavors of an in the world, more than 200. You can have as many free tastes as you like before settling on 1, or maybe more.
We felt we got out money's worth out of the tour, even if we didn't love the wines.
I would highly recommend the experience to anyone who enjoys learning about wine.

Discovering a surprising little known wine region
When we first saw wine tours in Western British Columbia's Fraser River Valley, I was skeptical expecting to find fortified fruit wines or low quality whites. Color me amazed! Our guide Michael brought us to three small but quality wine makers with both whites and reds that deserved serious consideration. The reds from Blackwood Lane (Bordeau style blends of the five Bordeau varietals) rank with the finest big reds I've experienced. The fourth stop at a Meadery was a pleasant introduction to Chaucers libation. I recommend this tour to anyone visiting Vancouver wishing to experience the nearby rural environs and meet local wine makers.

I have been on many food and drink tours, including around wineries, and found this to be among the least enjoyable.

The price did not include entry to any wineries, or lunch. So in fact you are paying to be driven around for a few hours, and for the commentary of the guide - which we found to be fairly unengaging, and at times verging on inappropriate.

We tried to engage with this client but he was rather impersonal and wasn't happy from the time he got into the tour bus to the time he left . He only sampled a few wines from the 4 wineries we visited. At no times were there any inappropriate behavior or commentary, and you do not pay entry to any wineries here! All the details and costs are clearly stated in the tour itinerary.

Great all day experience
Sep 2019
Lawrence picked my husband and I promptly as promised, and the only reason our tour was delayed at all was three members of the group got turned around trying to get to us. Lawrence kept an interesting commentary on our surroundings going during the drive. We stopped at three very nice wineries, each very different, and finished our day with a stop for lunch. The entire day was very pleasant and Lawrence is very entertaining and knowledgeable. I highly recommend this tour to anyone wanting the small group experience

Star of the day Blackwood Lane Vineyards & Winery
Aug 2018 • Friends
My cousin and I went on this tour and were surprised to be the only two going that day, our guide was the owner, Michael.
We were picked up punctually and everything was taken care of for us. Michael is very knowledgeable not only about the vineyards but being a local man he has a wealth of anecdotes. We were taken in Michael's MB Sprinter van, which was clean and comfortable. Three of the vineyards we visited are worthy of mention:
Backyard Vineyards. The lady who gave us the talk was very au fait and informed about the wines on offer. The wines were all of good quality and we did purchase bottles to take home.
Festina Lente Estate Winery. The lady who guided us through the many samples I think was the owner. She had a small farm with bees from which she collected honey. This was the mead winery. The range of "fruit" wines and those with the addition of honey were surprisingly light and refreshing, not at all cloying or over sweet. We did purchase bottles to take home as well as eggs from her free range hens.
Blackwood Lane Vineyards and Winery. This vineyard and winery was the last we visited and by far the best in my opinion. I could have just stayed here and sampled all day! We were extremely lucky to meet the owner who brimmed with enthusiasm and charisma. Characteristics of someone who took great pride in his product (and very rightly so). He took us onto the terrace overlooking his vines and explained his journey to being here and his ambitions to make one of Canada's best wines, not to be the biggest producer but a contender on the world scene of boutique wine. I found the Sea Buck Reisling irresistible and my cousin one of the big reds. Not cheap but worth it.
Onwards with Michael to our lunch stop. I had Elk Stew which was similar to a hearty mild beef stew and my cousin had salmon. Our lunch was not high end by any means but honest filling cafe style food. We were hungry and ate everything.
Overall a good day out. The scenery and information given en route was excellent. The only thing I found a bit disappointing was there was no fizz on offer. I did learn that it is in limited supply and was all gone.
Any connoisseur may very well be disappointed in the selection we sampled but for social drinking the samples were ok. Canadian wines are young and I think before long they will be known for more than Ice Wine.
Thank you Michael for an introduction to Frazer Valley wine and excellent customer satisfaction.

Unexpected Pleasure
Gastronaught Traveler sez two big thumbs up!

Wow what a fantastic way to spend the day! Michael, thank you!!! I cannot imagine a better guide nor pleasurable day! You were absolutely perfect. Your knowledge of Vancouver and its history was outstanding! The choices you made on wineries to tour and lunch stop were also excellent. The upscale and comfortable Mercedes Benz touring van was very nice too.

I consider myself very knowledgeable wine wise and was thoroughly surprised by the wineries in BC. Upon retrospect and being approximately the same latitude as Bordeaux it makes perfect sense that Canada has some outstanding wines for such a relatively young wine growing region. Very good reds and whites (including blends and varietals - Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, Merlot, Chardonnay oaked and un-oaked, Pinot Gris, and Rosé to name a few). Several award winners included. We were also introduced to mead wines. Unusual and interesting in their own right. And no they were not sweet, although they did have a dessert style one we tasted. If you like good wine and a great guide I highly recommend this tour. Would I do this tour again? In a New York second!
