What to expect
  • Make your way to a tour office in historic Victoria for 13:30 check-in, then meet a marine naturalist for an overview of the day’s activities. Your boat departs from a nearby dock, and at 1pm you’ll board the catamaran and find a comfortable seat on deck. The route reflects recent wildlife activity, and the captain will steer for the best place to see animals. Keep your camera ready, watching for killer whales, humpback whales, minke whales, and harbor seals, as well as both Dall’s porpoises and harbor porpoises. Steller sea lions and California sea lions cluster in rocky colonies off Vancouver Island, and more than 127 species of marine birds can be seen in the region. Head east towards the San Juan Islands to see the bird and seal sanctuary in the Chain Islets, or steer towards Race Rocks Marine Protected Area to visit the rocks where sea lions and seals spend the winter. Take advantage of your time with a marine naturalist to ask questions about the birds and mammals you see from the boat, and learn more about Vancouver Island wildlife.  This 3-hour boat tour concludes at the original departure point in Victoria’s Inner Harbour.

It was an amazing experience, we saw 2 humpback whales and sea lions. Even though the water was pretty choppy and we would have liked to see some orcas it was fun

Thank you for the review! We appreciate you taking the time. We are glad that you enjoyed your experience seeing some awesome Salish Sea wildlife! Though we never proceed with a trip if the waters are outside of our safe range, we appreciate you being flexible with the conditions that can occur while being out due to the variable conditions in the Salish Sea. As with all of our species, we never know what to expect as some marine species, like orcas, can travel up to 100 miles in 24 hours. We always do our best to ensure our guests see as many species as possible, and are part of a large spotting network that lets us know what whales might be spotted in our area and range. Thank you again for the review and we would love to host you again one day!

The "Amazing Wildlife Tour" was speeding around in a very rough ocean for over 3 1/2 hours to see pigeons, gulls, and cormorants! After 2 hours and 45 minutes of this, we managed to see one Minke whale for a total of about 5 seconds. I felt bad for everyone - I've been on a previous whale-watching trip in Nfld that was awesome so I've seen lots of whales before - but this trip was terrible. The little boy sitting next to me fell asleep for a lot of it, and everyone else just looked so bored. The crew were nice, but they spent almost the entire trip inside driving & talking to each other rather than one of them spending more time with the customers, although you could barely hear anything over the motors anyways. It was so unfortunate, the crew actually thought this was a good trip! This leads me to believe that perhaps there are better locations for whale-watching... spend your money somewhere else if you want to see whales.

Sorry to hear you were disappointed by your experience despite seeing a very active Minke Whale lunge feeding! Our vessel was the 1st vessel from Victoria to find a Whale that morning. Yes we did experience less than perfect conditions (that is the reality of heading out in the ocean, not every day can be flat calm) and you and the other guests were warned about the conditions several times. I was on that trip myself and Emma (who is an amazing Captain and Marine Naturalist and did a fantastic job) was constantly providing information when she was not busy driving. You were invited to sit in the cabin on several occasions. After an extensive search, part of the reality of dealing with Wild Whales (this is not SeaWorld), we managed to find a Minke Whale, which was actively lunge feeding aout 100 yards from the boat. We were the first boat to find the Whale and called other vessels to let them know. Not only that but to state you saw it for only 5 seconds is totally false. We were on scene for at least 30 minutes (as recorded in our log and have pictures to back this up) and we witnessed the Minke Whale lunge feeding through several birds feeding on bait balls (small schooling fish), a thrilling site for anyone that truly appreciates wildlife! We also saw several Sea Lions at Whale Rock & Race Rocks and Harbor Seals and Bald Eagles off Lopez Island. In fact we spent about an hour travelling to the area where we eventually found the Minke Whale, another 40 minutes searching for the Whale, if we don't search we don't find Whales, and 30 minutes with the Minke Whale. We then spent about an hour travelling back to Victoria and actually extended the tour by an extra 30 minutes, after checking that no one had to be back at 1pm (though some guests did need to be back by 1.30pm). So you actually got a longer tour than you paid for, got to see a very active Whale plus lots of other Marine Life and breathtaking scenery around San Juan Island! Not exactly sure what you expected from the tour but the other guests that day really appreciated the extra effort we made to find the whales and other wildlife..... If the seas were as bad as you claim then how did the boy next to you fall asleep? It reflects on you that you failed to appreciate the effort made and the various wildlife encountered, plus stunning scenery during the tour. You made these same false claims on your Google review and when you saw the response you decided to be vindictive and write a modified, but just as false, review on here.... Thankfully the vast majority of our guests, including the rest of the guests on your trip, appreciate all we do and have been doing since 1985. Victoria has been voted as one of the best places in the world to go Whale Watching and ANY trip we encounter a Whale is a good trip!

Professional, safe and delivered whales!
Our captain and co-captain were professional, accommodating and provided us informative information about the islands and animals we saw. The water was rough the day we went out and we felt safe in their expert hands. We saw 16 orcas in total and our guides did the best they could and took us far to where we needed to be to make this experience for us. If you are deciding between 5 Star and another company, definitely go with 5 Star, their boats offer some inside space and more room to move around compared to others that have just zodiacs. We were extremely grateful for the inside room for our rough day on the sea.

We are very happy to hear you enjoyed your encounter with so many Orcas during your trip, despite the less than ideal conditions. Thank you for the comments about the Captain and co-Captain, we will make sure we pass them on. It is also appreciated that you recognized their efforts to ensure your safety at all times whilst making sure you got to see lots of Whales and wildlife. Our amazing crew & staff are a huge part of our success! Finally, thank you for your incredible comments about 5Star and the glowing recommendation, we are truly grateful. It was a pleasure having you & your family on our tour and we hope to see you again in the future!

We had the most amazing 3 hours on this tour. We saw orcas, a humpback, lots of sea lions, an eagle among other things. It was nice to be able to move around on the boat. The crew/guides were extremely knowledgeable and friendly. The hot chocolate and coffee provided was a nice touch.

A couple of weeks ago I and 2 friends went whale watching and enjoyed every minute. Felt safe and secure on the boat. I will have some great memories of seeing Orcas and other marine mammals. We were not disappointed, I will come back again to 5 Star.
