About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Somecomments0 contributionsThe way to see Polar BearsThis is THE way to go see polar bears in Chruchill, Canada. The entire trip is impeccably planned and the trip is suitable for guests of any age or ability. Food is fully provided at local restaurants and while not incredibly fancy, it's quite good. Same with the hotels, both in Winnipeg and in Chruchill, nothing over the top, but clean and suitable. Most importantly, the drives in the tundra buggies are fantastic. We saw 12+ bears each day, including sparring males and a mother and two cubs. The buggy is warm and spacious with plenty of viewing windows and an outdoor deck. Food/drinks are available on board, as is a bathroom. Tours around the town of Churchill are informative and you learn a lot about local culture, history, and wildlife. Dog sledding, while not a long ride, was a unique experience and a lot of fun. We were lucky enough to see the Aurora on our second night. Our guide was great; staying up to inform us if there was an aurora and knocking on doors, knowing all of the animals and history on the tundra and being good guide throughout. FN was a great operator and everything was expertly planned and executed- if you want to see polar bears, this is the way to go.Written 29 November 2024
- CherylDale0 contributionsTrip of a lifetimeWow, what a trip! Having booked 9 months beforehand, we were so excited for this. We were Tour 23 with Heather as our guide. She was an amazing tour guide; she was friendly, very knowledgeable, made sure we were safe at all times while in Churchill and kept us on schedule perfectly. And she put up with a lot from our boistrous group that had never ending jokes! Jim our buggy driver was fantastic; he spotted bears out of nowhere and oh his stories - he was extremely entertaining, we loved him. Obviously the highlight was seeing the polar bears, but going around the town of Churchill was really nice and definitely worth being on the itinerary. We received outstanding hospitality and service from everyone we encountered - the drivers we had, the various servers for all our meals and the talks we were given. Everyone was just so friendly. The trip was magical!Written 26 November 2024
- WanderLSP0 contributionsWe saw lots of polar bears! We went on the Subarctic Discovery: Churchill Polar Bears tour. I usually plan and travel on my own and avoid tours. However, after a lot of research, I decided it was best to do a tour to see polar bears. I'm really glad I did. The chartered flights, that you just walk on with water!, save so much time. The Tundra Buggie is only half full on the multi-day tours. They drive you the block to breakfast, lunch and dinner because there can be polar bears roaming town. There were two polar bear sightings at our motel and Tunda Pub while we were there! I did not want to see a bear without being in the Tundra Buggie! Once I decided to take a tour, I did more research to select a company. This is the one. They are the oldest with the most permits. They are also partners with the nonprofit, Polar Bears International. My biggest concern was would we see polar bears?!? Would we get close enough to see them well?!? YES and YES. We had about 50 sightings, probably 30 unique bears (on Nov 1 and 2). They were far away and very, very close. It was quite amazing. The Tundra Buggies are very cool too. Again, I would have to say Frontiers seemed superior because of all the polar bear cams and guides on the tundra alerting drivers of where there are bears. We saw baby bears, bears sparring, bear yoga, all the things you hope to see. This tour is expensive because of all the logistics and you are in the middle of nowhere. It's not fancy at all, but everything is nice and clean.Written 19 November 2024
- pengshiowc0 contributionsBucket List Checked off - Amazing Polar Bear TripOverall, it was an amazing trip and very worth it to see the polar bears before they decrease in number due to global warming. We signed up for the classic polar bear trip. We arrived in Winnipeg on 10/28/2024, meeting the guide that night with some briefing. The next morning (10/29/2024), we boarded a chartered flight to Churchill, and doing a tour around the town that day. The town is very small, so basically you will be through everything in 1-2 hours, including the polar bear jail and have some free time. 10/30/2024 is the day! We are scheduled to board a tundra buggy to view polar bears. I was actually SUPER worried bear sightings would be limited because of the weather. It was reported to have strong winds, and bears typically hunker down during strong winds. However, it turns out to be an excellent day for bear sightings, and despite the strong winds, we saw 30+ bears. At one point, bears were coming from every direction, and we just lost count. One of the guides said that it was the most bear sightings in one day during his career. 10/31/2024 is a relatively laid back day, when we enjoyed our food (btw food arrangement was amazing), and listened to some presentations, visited museums. The final day, 11/1/2024, was another bear viewing day, and we saw 20+ bears, most were from a distance (so be sure to bring binoculars). It was a great trip. The only improvement point was the northern lights alert. Northern lights did come out the first night, and we were lucky enough to have seen it in front of the hotel. However, we were told that the guide would've woken us up and likely arrange a transportation to go further into the dark. That did not happen. People were not notified of the show. Another thing that could be better was that I was very excited to see the halloween celebration/kids trick or treating on the day, but again wasn't notified that it started, and we eventually missed the event. Other than that, the trip was great and we had wonderful memories.Written 14 November 2024
- apunkaslate0 contributionsNovember 2024 Trip to ChurchillWe just returned from a trip to Churchill with Frontiers North. We are avid travelers and were super impressed with the smooth operation that this company runs. Everything from hotel stays, transfers, flights, Tundra Buggy ride to food was very well executed. JP, our Buggy 13 driver was really informative and had a keen eye to spot the bears. We're very thankful that all our wishlist items were checked on the very first day. The Buggy was super comfortable with only 18 passengers. Our tour guide, Josh was very patient and answered all our questions. He and our shuttle driver, Jamie took us to see the spectacular Northern Lights in the freezing temperatures. Thank you for making our trip memorable.Written 11 November 2024
- PM18500 contributionsSubarctic Discovery: Churchill Polar BearsOur polar bear adventure with Frontiers North exceeded every expectation--starting with the fact that we were treated to more than twenty polar bear sightings, of at least 16 different individuals, over our two days on the tundra! We also saw ptarmigan, arctic hare, and red foxes. While animal sightings often come down to luck, almost every other wonderful aspect of our trip was only possible with the diligence, experience, and caring of everyone at Frontiers North. From our first moments on the ground in Winnipeg, we were impressed with the food and lodging choices, smooth movements between activities, and clear communication. We could not have asked for a better tour guide than Ward Cameron, who was attentive, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about these bears and their lives. And we are still talking about how skillfully Markus piloted the tundra buggy to maximize our wildlife sightings! We also loved meeting and learning from the good people at Polar Bears International who are so committed to protecting these creatures. Though we explored staying in the Tundra Buggy Lodge, we ultimately opted to stay in Churchill, and we're glad we did. We did not feel we missed out on any polar bear sightings this way. Rather, we loved experiencing a bit of life in this special place (be sure to check out the Northern Store), and our accommodation (the Aurora Inn) was clean, warm, and comfortable. I would also note that we took advantage of Frontiers North's gear rental program. Though somewhat pricey, renting a parka, snow pants, and snow boots was still a better deal for us (Californians) than buying new gear we were unlikely to wear again. Gear pickup and dropoff in Winnipeg could not have been easier.Written 7 November 2024

- monicawP8139LZ0 contributionsDon't miss this opportunity!Wow! Trip of a lifetime from start to finish! We stayed 3 nights on the tundra lodge. The accommodations, food, tundra buggy, lounge, diner, cultural presentations were all beyond our expectations. Mark, our driver, and Jason, our guide, were outstanding, knowledgeable, passionate and great story tellers with a witty sense of humor. We saw polar bears, red fox, arctic hare and amazing scenery and even the Northern Lights!! We are currently in our post-trip mode of feeling great sadness to leave but true gratefulness to have had this very special experience. We hope to return one day - this time for belugas!Written 22 October 2024
- 427carylh0 contributionsA couple of unforgettable days on the TundraWe had an unforgettable trip to see the bears and the subarctic wildlife out on the Tundra. Our guide Duane was very knowledgeable, professional with some amazing stories. Everything was arranged well and went smoothly. Our buggy driver Jim rocked! He was so funny and such an interesting character. The love and respect these 2 gentleman have for the bears and wildlife is inspiring. We saw many bears and also got to see them sparring, being super cute (themselves!), walking on ice etc. We also saw foxes, an adorable Arctic hare and different birds. The only suggestion for improvement is for those in pre-trip to be more responsive as I had to write in and follow up on some of the information, rather than it being shared with me. I really enjoyed myself and will never forget this trip!Written 22 October 2024
- 624monac0 contributionsWorth the money!Absolutely wonderful tour! Our driver Luke sis a splendid job of educating us and taking the time to ensure we got to see Polar bears as well as other wild like like Red fox. The buggy ride was comparatively smooth being an electric vehicle. Our other tour with Frontier North was a bumpy ride and not really good compared to this tour.Written 14 October 2024
- roamnbears0 contributionsTrip of a Lifetime!Life got in the way of me writing this review sooner, but the delay should not detract from the awesome experience we had with Frontier North. We could not have asked for a better experience. Everything went like clockwork. We were busy from the moment we touched down in Churchill to when we returned to Winnipeg. We saw SO many bears. I had hoped to see one, and we saw more than a dozen. We also learned so much about the indigenous people and local history. Accommodations were basic, but comfortable and clean. I believe Frontier North actually built, or bought, the hotel where we stayed, and two of our restaurants were directly across the street from the hotel, so super convenient. Food was good. Our tour guide, Ward, also arranged for us to take a helicopter tour. The Polar Bear International researcher who accompanied us on the Tundra Buggy educated us so much about the interdependency of the plants and animals in the ecosystem. Our Tundra Buggy driver, Jim, was the very best!Written 28 April 2024
- nancybP1045VS0 contributionsWe expected more from Frontiers NorthMy husband and I had planned a trip to see the polar bears on the Classic Churchill Polar Bear Adventures through Frontiers North Adventures from October 20-25, 2024. Regrettably, I've learned that I require a knee replacement, which can't be scheduled until mid-summer, followed by several months of recovery. Due to this unforeseen circumstance, we won't be able to go on our trip in October. We've respectfully requested a refund of our $1500 deposit from Frontiers North, but they've declined our request quoting their terms and conditions. While we are aware of their regulations, considering that October is a prime viewing season we're confident that our reserved spots will be easily filled. We requested that we receive a refund of our deposit when/if our spots are filled, and they declined, again stating it was against their policy. We had hoped for more flexibility and understanding given our unique situation, especially since our cancellation doesn't result in any financial loss for them. Retaining our deposit would actually be a gain for them, making their decision not to refund quite disappointing. We strongly advise exploring other tour companies if you're planning a trip to Churchill to view the bears. Since there are several options available, we recommend choosing a company known for its flexibility and understanding of unforeseen circumstances.Written 26 April 2024

- Kris_K_D0 contributionsAn absolute (subarctic) blast!I read about Frontiers North Adventures in a Travel + Leisure article which sparked my interest in their Subarctic Polar Bear tour. I’m so glad I looked into it, as I never knew this kind of polar bear-focused adventure existed. The tour I selected included lodging, meals, ground transportation, and a roundtrip chartered flight to Churchill. Travel to and from the departure point was not included. I had an absolute blast! I came home exhausted from being in an extended state of excitement during my time in Churchill. I enjoyed the town tour and both days in the Tundra Buggy. Frontiers North cannot guarantee what you’ll see on a tour with so many variables at play. We were fortunate to have about a dozen polar bear sightings (including three individual cubs), as well as a wolf, snowy owl, and a ptarmagin. We were also lucky to have beautiful cold weather while out in the Tundra Buggy. Lodging in Churchill is basic, but my stay was comfortable and pretty great. My room included a kitchen, which was convenient. Long story short, my time with Frontiers North was spectacular! So much so, that I’m considering another tour in the future, with a different focus.Written 29 November 2023
- jonmcwhite0 contributionsThe North, the People, the Bears, the Aurora... bucket list fulfilledWe took the train from Winnipeg to Churchill to rendezvous with Frontiers North for their Polar Bear Adventure. Upon arrival at 9 AM we had a bus tour of some of the sites of Churchill including the Polar Bear Jail. That is where troublesome bears are housed until the bay ice freezes and they can be released out onto the ice to hunt. We also visited the Insanitaq museum which shows Churchill's history and indigenous people's stories and artifacts. We collected a few more visitors at the airport and went to lunch at the Seaport Restaurant. After lunch we experienced Polar Bears International's exhibit and were given a talk about the bears unique migration and biology as related to Churchill and the ecology of the sea ice. We experienced the coldest part of the tour when we went out to Cape Merry and stopped at the Battery. We had no opportunity to change into warmer clothes yet and we couldn't manage to stay out in the cold for very long. We stopped for some shopping and then proceeded to our hotel, the Aurora Inn. Diner was at the Tundra Inn Pub & Grill. The next morning started early with breakfast at 7 AM at the Tundra Pub. At 8 AM we boarded to minibus to get out to the Tundra Buggy Dock to board our ride out to see the bears. We spent the day in our spacious heated vehicle complete with lavatory and picnic lunch onboard. While the vehicle is in motion, you can get bumped around a bit depending on the terrain. The windows drop down from the top so you can use your camera directly out the window. The driver will stop and turn off the engine at which time you are allowed out onto the back viewing deck. You also cannot use the restroom while the vehicle is moving. It is important to not dangle anything out the window or over the side of the viewing deck. No use of selfie sticks! We saw more than a dozen bears including a mom with triplets. We also saw arctic fox and ptarmigan. We returned for dinner at the Ptarmigan Restaurant at 5 PM and then went to a presentation by a local indigenous trapper who explained his life and upbringing as well as his current family business. A little later start at 8 AM for Tundra Pub breakfast followed by a 10 AM presentation at the Parks Canada Visitor Center located in the train station. Discussion of the history of the region from the indigenous people to the Hudson Bay Company and it was fascinating. Skulls of a Black Bear, a Grizzly and a Polar Bear were used to show the differences in diet and needed strength of bite. Both the Black Bear and the Grizzly being omnivores have teeth designs for chewing, whereas the Polar Bear has even molars designed for slicing and shredding their nearly strict carnivore diet. The Polar Bear skull also has more space for the chewing muscles that provide the amazingly strong bite they use on their prey. There was even a beaver felt hat to show what almost led to their extinction just for European fashion style. We followed this with lunch at the Ptarmigan Restaurant. After lunch we had a short break at the hotel before loading up again for the Wapusk dog yard where we experienced sledding actually on snow. In Alaska we had done dog team but in May/June they were using wheeled vehicles with at least 6 guests and much larger teams of dogs. On this day they had just changed over to the actual sleds on snow with teams of 6 dogs. They have a specially designed sled where the first guest sits in front, the second guest can stand on the runners or sit if they prefer, and the actual musher is behind them. They call the experience the Ididamile. The owner also gave us a talk on the current state of affairs with dog racing which unfortunately doesn't seem very positive. We had a great time and returned for dinner at the Tundra Pub. Our last day started early again with 7 AM breakfast at the Tundra Pub and 8 AM transfer to the Tundra Buggy Dock. We had another full day on the tundra bringing our bear total to over 30. We saw more arctic fox and were treated to a sandwich lunch with soup. After departing the Tundra Buggy, we were taken directly to the airport for a charter flight back to Winnipeg. The Calm Air flight was smooth and quick with a charcuterie board snack on the way. The charter arrival was very easy, and we were soon on our way to the Lakeview Signature by Windham Hotel right at the airport. We got situated and then wandered down to the Sports Bar where we met our tour manager and many other guests for a farewell drink. This is not an inexpensive tour, but again, there is nowhere else in the world where you can be virtually guaranteed to safely get up close to this amazing apex predator. I forgot to mention that on our second night on the train we were able to see the best aurora we have ever experienced right through the train windows. This has to be a bucket list tour if wildlife is your thing.Written 19 November 2023

The tour was good, we saw some animals - actually I crossed off all animals I anticipated to see except snowy owl, although, we only see one individual of each species.
What I have as a major disappointment is the neglect of covid measures: at lunch we were told not to go out to the platform to eat; so all 40 of us confined to the vehicle cabin and we all have to take off our masks. I opened my window, but it was a cold day so not many guests did the same.
I can understand that Frontiers North wants to protect the ecology as much as possible by preventing food to drop onto the tundra (by mistake or by malice), however, this is an unusual time and we need to act accordingly. I believe the chance of food "escaping" onto the tundra is a lot smaller than someone catching covid in this case. Frontiers North please consider to relax this rule until the blunt of covid is behind us.

Jim, our driver, did everything he could to allow us to see polar bears, even though it was the off season. We saw a mom and two cubs from a distance, we saw one napping on a rock but the highlight of the trip was his manoeuvring of the vehicle over huge rocks to give us a perfect view of a bear feeding. He also pointed out bald eagles, cranes, ducks and tundra geese and we got amazing photos.

My husband and I took the Summer day tour last week and had a nice time. Our guide, Jim, told great stories and had a great sense of humor. He did his best to find animals throughout the drive. He helped us see a polar bear, ptarmigans, red fox, bald eagle, tundra swans, and a variety of birds. It wasn’t yet polar bear season so we were happy to see the one we saw. The soup and sandwich lunch was good and could be altered in advance for vegans too. There is a bathroom on board and a viewing deck on the back of the buggy. A unique way to spend the day.

Was planning this trip, booked the tour and prepaid (required). A train derailment has prevent us from travelling to Churchill. All other events we have planned were canceled without effort or issue (they understand this is out of the visitors control). This organization refuses to refund the prepayment, saying they don't provide refunds. Do not use.

Hi Dave,
You are correct that Frontiers North Adventures does not refund for cancellations that occur for things beyond our control. This policy is indicated and communicated with guests upon booking with us. It is the first thing that pops up when you start the booking process online and is always clearly communicated by our Travel Advisors as we feel it is important guests make their bookings aware of this policy.
We empathize with your disappointment about a train derailment interrupting your plans to Churchill. As per our prior communications with you, a refund is not something we offer. However, we have been more than happy to transfer you to an alternative Tundra Buggy Day Tour time. As communicated in emails, where an alternative Tundra Buggy Day tour time will not work, we are happy to support you in making an insurance claim through your travel insurance provider.
Please do not hesitate to contact our team again if you would like to continue discussing your options.
Kind regards,

We had a lovely tour with only 4 other passengers. Our guide Jim was super. He was excellent at finding wildlife. We were there on a hot day and there wasn't as much as usual yet he still make the tour interesting. The lunch on board was very good. It was interesting to see the tundra in the summer. I think we will come back for a tour in the winter.

I booked the Summer Day tour with the Tundra Buggy in Churchill. Unfortunately, my train to Churchill was canceled and I had to cancel my whole trip there. I thought that regarding this situation of force majeure, they would be nice enough to refund my activity, that I only booked three days before. The lady on the phone did not want to hear anything and was almost rude to me and said no reason is good enough for a refund. I will definitely book another trip to Churchill in the future but be sure I’ll never use Frontiers North’s services any longer. Beware of them, they’re expensive and very unprofessional.

In summer, spotting polar bears will always be a bit more hard than in autumn. However, guide/driver Neal was excellent, very informative and with a huge sense of humour. We spotted 11 polar bears on 1 day, including mothers with cub's, and different bird species. It was amazingly beautiful, an excellent day.

Our tour guide, Jimmy, was an amazing host! He spent the entire day with us, providing incredible stories for a wonderful experience. He showed us fox holes, many arctic birds, (even two golden eagles) and the beautiful tundra area around Churchill and the Hudson Bay.
Not only that, we had a female polar bear decide to follow us for 4 hours! She was such a sweet, lovely bear, keeping her distance most of the time, but occasionally coming to see what we were up to, and Jimmy knew exactly how to keep us from spooking her away. He stayed ahead of her most of the time and respected her space, letting her decide how the day would proceed. At no time did we feel we were invading her territory. We then had the incredible luck of seeing a second bear in a lake, just chilling out! Our beautiful female came to the lake too, and the two bears could smell each other, but ignored one another.
The company has very strict rules about how they interact with nature and will allow no one to upset the natural ecosystem around Churchill. Its wonderful to see. We felt very secure in our "cage". A very tasty lunch, snacks and drinks were provided and we had room to roam around in the buggy, which is equipped with a toilet. You don't get off the buggy to ruin the animal's territory.
This was the same company that we went kayaking with to see the belugas. That was also a spectacular experience, once in a lifetime. Something we will never forget. I would highly recommend both trips. The kayaking was easier and safer than I thought it would be - we felt very safe with professionals ready to help us in their zodiaks very close by. The belugas were so friendly and playful.
Highly recommended.
Not only that, we had a female polar bear decide to follow us for 4 hours! This tour is amazing -- our knowledgeable and friendly guide constantly pointed out interesting things to see throughout our Tundra Buggy tour. This is a fantastic way to see the tundra and I highly recommend taking this tour. We took the Day Tundra Buggy Tour -- they do offer a variety of other tours.

We are a group of 4 seniors from Saskatchewan. We have booked the train from Thompson to Churchill on August 16, 2021. We are very much hoping we will be vaccinated for Covid 19 and the Manitoba border will be open by then, but cannot afford to spend 14 days isolating at the border. The train promises to reimburse passengers who encounter this dilemma, but I see that there is no such option mentioned here. We would love to book this tour and insure seats will be available, but cannot guarantee that this trip can actually happen. What would you suggest that we do in this case?

which tour is best for me, to do a local hotel and go out on several day trips, or the full tour for 5 days. I have raynaulds in my hands and the cold temperature makes them hurt, and have degenerative disc disease and building discs. so sitting for a long time can be difficult and also a very bumpy road my hurt my back, any suggestions I really want to seee the polar bears and lights. I will be by myself and coming from Chicago, il
