What to expect
  • This walking tour begins at the southwest corner of McCaul Street and Dundas Street West beside the Art Gallery of Ontario. Meet and greet the guide and the rest of the small group and prepare for two hours of adventure around the Kensington Market and Chinatown neighborhoods. Together, Chinatown and Kensington Market are often bustling, friendly places to visit. Each has its own distinctively different reputation for local and international delicacies, unique vendors and specialty shops — like nowhere else in Toronto. Because they are located right next to one another, it provides a perfect opportunity to explore both in a relatively short amount of time. Kensington Market is a distinctively multicultural neighborhood, evolving from a working-class Jewish market into a working-class bohemian market. With so many different immigrants settling here over the past century, there is now an ample variety of colors, sounds and flavors from all over the world. Witness the vintage shops, cafes, bakeries and bars, plus the plethora of bare brick walls that have been artfully covered with stunning graffiti murals and street art. One street over is Chinatown, an area that was first developed in the late 19th century. Enjoy learning about the local stories and interesting history of Canada's largest Chinese community and one of the largest Chinatowns in North America. It’s also one of the busiest areas of the city, with shops, restaurants, historic monuments and more extending along Dundas Street West and Spadina Avenue, located to the west of the center of the city. The tour ends at the Dragon City Shopping Centre.

The tour was fun and interesting and glad I got the chance to see some neighborhoods in the city I might not otherwise have visited. Lots of cool places to eat wish I could have tried them all. We did a bunch of snacking at a few stops though. Mike was a great guide who knew so much. And there were about 5 of us all together on the tour. It’s great when you can meet up with strangers but it feels like spending the day with new friends.

My boyfriend and I took this trip as a weekend date/getting to know our city better trip (We're both familiar with the city). Mike was our tour guide, and was funny, personable, and knowledgeable. He did warn us that he never shut up, but considering I wasn't in the mood to chatter and was in the mood to learn, he was the perfect tour guide. I'm a history buff, and he still managed to teach me something about the city, which was exactly what I was in the mood for.

The one piece of advice I would give is bring hand sanitizer if you're squeamish - lots of snacking is about to happen.

This was booked as part of a larger group tour so was unsure of what to expect. Jason was a brilliant host; warm, friendly and incredibly knowledgeable, he was able to provide us with an excellent historical and contemporary insight into the Kensington Market area. We experienced China Town, a cool little coffee shop and some funky street art. The fluffy show that fell throughout the tour only added to the atmosphere.
This is a must for people looking to explore the local side of Toronto.

We did both the Kensington Market and St. Lawrence Market tours with Jason. This will sound like a broken record but I will say it anyway, it is an outstanding use of your time in Toronto. Jason loves his job and is very knowledgeable. Please don’t plan on eating before or after the tour of the St. Lawrence Market. Excellent intro into Canadian food. I will say that, despite National Geographic’s claim, its not the best marketplace. But is is worth the tour. If I had to chose between the tours of Kensington Market (a neighborhood, not a market) or St. Lawrence Market, I would chose the Kensington Market tour. Not really a food tour (you will sample at a couple of places) but a very interesting walk through a fascinating neighborhood.

Jason was a friendly, funny and equally knowledgable guide. Unlike some walking tours where you feel the guide may be reciting a script, Jason was extremely genuine and passionate about the neighbourhoods. This made the whole experience extremely memorable. We had many stops along the route and Jason would tell us about moments of history, facts about the area & made this tour so much more than just your average walking tour. We also stopped for coffees and snacks & after his recommendation of a bagel store located on Kensington Market we were so impressed we returned the following day to enjoy our breakfast there. If you want a fulfilling & educational experience that feels just as informative as it is fun then look no further than to book a tour with Urban Adventures. Thoroughly enjoyed by all & we shall not hesitate to recommend the tour in the future.

Thank you Jason & Urban Adventures.

Jason was an amazing and knowledgeable guide. Visiting Kensington Market was highly recommended by co-workers. The two neighborhoods was so much fun and having a guide who lived not only in the Toronto area but had lived in/around these areas themselves made the tour feel so much more personal. I learned so much about the area and the people who live and lived here. Would definitely recommend others take the tour.

We really enjoyed this tour and were surprised at the scope of subjects dealt with expertly by our guide, Brie. From start to end, we loved Brie's description of the formation and development of this diverse area. We particularly enjoyed her explanation of the wonderful street art and wall murals which so populate these areas. This was a new and fascinating subject for us. We enjoyed the ethnic foods we sampled and the company of a diverse group of tour members. Highly recommended.

My boyfriend and I visited Toronto the other weekend for the first time. It was his first time in Canada and neither of us knew much about the country, even though we live in the US. Tim was a wealth of knowledge about Toronto and Canada in general - and when I say a wealth, I mean it seemed like there was just about nothing he didn't know!
It felt less like a tour and more like we were being guided around the city by a good friend. I would definitely recommend this tour and Tim to anyone who visits Toronto!

Loved the tour, our guide was awesome. We got to see and hear about some of the great murals in Chine town and Kensington Market. Tried some pastries, cheese curds and had some coffee. It was nice having a small group, almost like having a friend show you the city. Thank you.

We did this tour in August on a hot day. Sam was our tour guide and she was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions. Our first rest was a Chinese bakery with some of the most interesting and yummy foods like egg yolk tart. We sat outside and enjoyed our treats while Sam talked to us (treats included in tour). Our next rest stop was at Jimmy’s coffee (once again drinks included in our tour). We sat outside on the back patio and chatted but the rest stop was 25 minutes which was way too long to my liking. Maybe because it was a hot day the rests were long but I wanted to keep going and the adult kids with us started getting bored. The adult kids did love that Sam taught us about urban graffiti and I enjoyed that as well.
