About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Khisghman110 contributionsA MUST DO EXPERIENCE YOU WONT REGRETThis was the highlight of our trip! We did a private tour for 2 couples, and fantastic doesn’t even begin to describe it. Our walking food tour along St. Laurent Blvd with Melissa was outstanding! Melissa’s deep knowledge of the history and cultural highlights of each neighborhood made the tour so much more than just tasting food—it was a true journey through Montreal’s diverse heritage. From Chinese to Jewish, Portuguese to Italian, and of course the iconic foods of Montreal, every dish was a perfect reflection of the community it represented. Ending at Jean Talon Market was the cherry on top! Melissa's passion, storytelling, and delicious recommendations made this tour unforgettable. A must for food lovers and history buffs alike! My tip is to skip breakfast because Mélissa does not disappoint in making sure you leave perfectly satisfied.Written 2 October 2024

- jenniferdT2104XL0 contributionsWell balanced culture/history + food tourExcellent tour guide, with extensive knowledge of the city's history, but also culinary details and culture. This food tour isn't just about food, it's about Chinatown's culture and history first, with food to pair with this information. It's a great mix should you like both walking tours and food tours. There is a good quantity of food, in 3 main sit-down locations + a few bites while walking, but it's mainly in the second part of the tour, the first is mainly a historical/cultural walking tour. This is different from most food tours I've been on, so to be noted if you want food, food, food and only food. For me, it was a super balance, so I'm super happy!Written 9 September 2024
- MinnesotaIgel0 contributionsLearn to appreciate chocolateOther than knowing about chocolate in a general sense and that it comes from cacoa plants, this tour gave us a much better appreciation of the entire process to making chocolate. The guide, Melissa, accommodated our scheduling conflict and taught us so much at each stop. At each stop, she had us really take time to smell and taste different chocolates to appreciate the differences. At the factory the owner and Melissa talked about each step of the process from selecting cacoa seeds, drying them, roasting, separating them and we could see and taste the differences by changing something at each step. We got to try our hand at making some chocolate bars and adding nuts or other things to take with us. Not skimpy on samples, multiple samples, and all of the guides/owners were so kind, informative, and fun. It wasn't too much walking, easy pace, and our teenager enjoyed the tour (the other family had a middle schooler). It was a mix of listening and doing, so even younger kids would be able to participate and learn something along the way. Lots of visuals and the people were prepared with large pictures for us to be able to see. Highly recommend this tour.Written 29 June 2024

- Kate K0 contributionsMust do!We had a fantastic time on this tour. It was appropriate both for those who knew a lot about tea already and those who didn't. She was accommodating to my mom's special needs (mobility impaired). I thought I knew about Japanese tea, but have never experienced anything like the tea service we went to. Highly recommended.Written 14 October 2022
- susanmcc630 contributionsHistory/Culture/Great FoodMelissa was a fantastic guide. Her love of Montreal, it’s history and the knowledge of Chinese food and traditions was exceptional. Melissa’s enthusiasm was contagious. Lots of great food, too much by the end. The walk has lots of stops for food, and Melissa was conscious to stop and talk with benches close by, so suitable for people that are not able to walk very far. Best food tour yet.Written 11 October 2022
- ralkinz0 contributionsFANTASTING activity for friends!!! - Afternoon Tea: Le TotalIf I could, I'll give more than 5 stars! This tour was a gift for my best friend's Birthday and it was absolutely outstanding and way beyond anything I had expected! Melissa is an amazing guide and helped us discover many new locations which we would for sure enjoy many more times in the future. All the places we have visited were extraordinary and we really enjoyed learning about the story behind each location (even met with the owners). Melissa also taught us about Montreal's history in-between the locations we were visiting and the whole tour felt like a little adventure as we walked through areas we've never been before (we are from Montreal too). The communication was super fast and the customer service was extremely good. We now plan on experiencing all of the remaining tours as Melissa's company was highly enjoyable and we can't wait to learn more about our city. Thank you!Written 11 July 2022

- tanya g0 contributionsUnbelievably cool!I picked this tour to do for my husband’s birthday. We had some friends come in from out of town and I also invited some locals. Melissa, the tour guide, was amazing. I’m usually not to interested in history but some how, she made it interesting. Her personality, the way she expressed herself and the facts she told us, all easy to understand and enjoy. We visited hidden supermarkets and learned of some great healing tea places! The restaurants we went to were delicious and allowed us to try things we wouldn’t normally try. The food was also abundant and we didn’t feel hungry or like we were missing anything. Even though this tour was in my “backyard” I learned a lot and would do it again. We definitely recommend this tour and will do others for sure.Written 14 November 2021
- Careenhopkins0 contributionsGreat food, great tour!Melissa was very informative and brought great energy to the tour! She provided a good amount of history of the Chinatown area as well as the surrounding area of Montreal, which we really enjoyed! All the food was delicious! There was a good variety of Asian food, starting with Banh Mi and ending with Cantonese pastry! We recommend for anyone looking to eat good food and learn a little more about Montreal!Written 3 September 2021
- chiankwang0 contributionsLearned so muchLearned to savor and properly appreciate fine chocolate as one would a glass of fine wine. Really enjoyed the tastings as well as all the background information. Each of the stops was equally fascinating and informative. I had no idea Montreal was such a mecca for bean to bar chocolate production. Melissa is an amazing tour guide. Very accommodating and organized. We had two children with us (energetic boys: 10 and 12 years old) and she was able to engage them and was very patient with their constant questions. Our family of four had a great time. Even my husband (more of a sports fan) found this tour interesting. We also learned about the history of the neighborhood. We felt we were with a friend who was having us visit her friends who happened to be chocolate connoisseurs and producers. Best tour guide ever!Written 18 August 2021
- 851mgd0 contributionsWe loved the Ultimate Chocolate Tour!My son and I did the Ultimate Chocolate Tour. It was absolutely wonderful! Our guide Melissa was so friendly and knowledgeable! We learned a lot about chocolate and also a lot about the history of Montreal. It was fun, interesting and delicious! We loved it!!Written 18 August 2021
- simardv2220 contributionsVery enlightening! It was so neat learning about different types of Japanese teas, the different methods of steeping (cold, hot, steeping times), and how to taste with "slurping" to get the full flavor experience. It was also very interesting to learn about the bean to bar chocolate movement, how cacao nibs are cultivated, fermented and handled to make chocolate, and how to properly taste chocolate. I loved discovering how combined flavors were so different when tea and chocolate were paired. I think this is will be my new dessert to end a great meal, i.e. with a small cup of tea and a small piece of good chocolate!Written 22 May 2021

A great food tour should fill your belly with great food and your head with a sense of place. This was a great tour! First the belly part- We had an opportunity to sample rivaling smoked meat and bagel shops in a fraction of the time that it would have taken on our own. In addition, we sampled other businesses that were clearly local favorites. Along the way our tour guide shared stories of the history of community often using photos and excerpts from writings of notable people from the community. In short, our tour guide was the real deal. Unlike many tours, the tour was based on a deep knowledge and love for the restaurants and chefs in the area and clear respect for and knowledge of the history of the community. Well done!

Frances guided us through an extensive tour of Montreal's old Jewish neighborhoods and eateries. Everyone who visits Montreal gets to Schwartz's and either Fairmount or St. Viateur Bagels, but this tour will take you beyond those stand-bys to places like Wilensky's Light Lunch, Lester's Deli and Falafel Yoni that you'd be unlikely to visit without a professional guide.
The food was beyond plentiful--in fact, the servings are huge! Round Table Tours thoughtfully provides you with a canvas tote bag to carry your leftovers, which you WILL have...there's no way most people could consume that much food over the span of four hours. For example, each person got three full meat sandwiches (two enormous smoked meat sandwiches plus a Wilensky's Special), two bagels, a full falafel pita, and more. Don't eat before the tour, and pace yourself during it so that you have room to try everything.
We would rate this tour "very good" rather than "great" for two reasons. One was that Frances, while very knowledgeable most of the time, sprinkled in a few too many personal stories and opinions that were completely irrelevant to the subject matter of the tour. We thought this was less polished than some other tours we've been on, but I overheard comments from others on our tour that were more negative. She also tended to talk too quickly, sometimes presenting information when some people on the tour (there were 10 on ours) were not within earshot. And there were occasions when she simply didn't have facts at hand, like when she pointed out a mural of a man in Little Portugal but couldn't remember who he was or why he was important (so why point him out?), or when she was showing photos of historical figures but didn't know who some of them were. She was still very good--just not among the best walking tour guides we've had.
The second reason for the "very good" rating is that the tour is just a bit too long. At four hours and more than four miles of walking (including getting to and from the tour), we were exhausted by the end of it. Perhaps drop one of the two bagel bakeries (they use the same recipe and the bagels tasted nearly identical) and the stop at Lester's (their sandwich was delicious, but it's probably not necessary to have TWO smoked meat sandwiches). At least we were able to walk off some of that incredible food, though!
If you're interested in the history of Jews in Montreal and the foods they brought to the culture that are now local staples, this is the tour for you. Just be prepared for a long day and a ton of food!

Thank you for writing such a detailed and thorough review. I appreciate you taking the time, participating and giving valuable feedback.
I would like, however, to correct some of the comments as they are inaccurate:
1. We don’t eat 3 full sandwiches- the smoked meat sandwiches are 1/2 sandwiches and the Wilensky special (the 3rd) is optional and can be shared if you have someone with you to share it with.
2. If you individually received 2 whole bagels at each stop, that was a mistake. It is 2 x 1/2 bagels = 1 whole
3. We don’t walk over 4 miles. We walk 3.3km’s = 1.8 miles. Maybe over the course of the day and with steps that aren’t actually part of moving between locations on the tour you somehow get that on an app or it FEELS like 4 miles to you, but in reality, it isn’t even 2 miles. But yes, we walk.
4. Frances isn’t a robot and neither are myself or Darren. Although we strive to be as neutral as possible, we are human beings with our own lives and personalities. In fact, some people get upset when we simply state historic facts or nuance things as it doesn’t always support their personal opinions. I like though that you have underlined this as sometimes going to another city, meeting a new person who tells a story in a way that is different from our own narrative can be a great opportunity. So can having the privilege to get to know someone from another city while they show you their city.
5. In line with the our not being robots, I designed the tour and all of us are in our 10th year of guiding the tour. Despite having read extensively and delivered the tour over and over again, it still happens periodically that I draw a blank, stumble over my words or sometimes do not know something or cannot answer a question. Of course, we don’t read from a book…I think it is human to make mistakes. I’ve been lucky as clients have been incredibly understanding, adaptable and human. I hope to keep prioritizing connection over perfection and an atmosphere where guides can be themselves and let their personalities shine- even make mistakes…as we all do.
I’m glad that overall you enjoyed it. Thanks again for the feedback.

We had the absolute best day with our guide! She was extremely bright, well-versed in Montreal Jewish community history, and she was extremely personable. Her pleasant demeanor and insight kept us entertained for 4 hours.
The food on this walking tour was delicious and exemplified the diverse dimensions of Montreal Jewry. It was worth every dollar. I recommend this tour to anyone with an interest in Canadian history— or a love of great food!

What a great way to get a look at the Montreal Jewish community through food. Melissa was and excellent source of facts about the food we experience, the people running the establishments and the community. We met and learned about some of the personalities that are the character of this diverse area. Highly recommend this and make sure you are wearing comfortable shoes and stretchy pants.

Melissa our tour guide was excellent. She gave us a comprehensive tour of the best Jewish food in Montreal. She imparted valuable and very interesting anecdotes about the history of Jewish food and the people. Everyone was full after the many food stops to sample the outstanding food. This tour is fantastic and I highly recommend! Melissa's knowledge of the history of the area you will walk around was highly engaging. The food part of the tour exceeded our expectations and we left full. Everything and I do mean everything we ate tasted delicious. We genuinely had the best day yesterday. I mean food and local knowledge/ history lesson, what's not to love. Melissa truly is the Pied Piper of the best food, so we plan to book another one of her tours.

That’s so sweet! Thank you for taking the time to write about it and come out. You guys were a blast and I knew who was writing as soon as I saw brilliant. The entire experience from start to finish was top notch. Melissa is knowledgeable, personable and flexible. She knew exactly what she was doing and shared a depth of history and knowledge that is unparalleled. The variety of foods was amazing, the shared poetry and visits of locations of famous Montreal Jews homes and murals added a layer to the tour that made it feel incredible personal and rich.

This tour was phenomenal! Melissa, the company founder, was our tour guide and was a wealth of knowledge. The food was beyond delicious and plentiful. Melissa had information and stories about each location, as well as general knowledge about Montreal and the Mile End area. It was wonderful to see the relationship Melissa has with the restaurant owners -- it was clear to see the mutual respect. We would highly recommend this tour!

One of f our group walks quite slow and will need to stop on occasion. Are there stops where you can sit on a bench while tasting? And about how many km of walking please! Thanks.
Written 10 September 2018
The tour lasts about 4 hours. One walks between food establishments. Each place had a place to sit -- sometime bar stools to table and chairs. One place we ate on a bench on the sidewalk. The pace of the walk is not fast with about 10 to 20 minutes between food establishments. The pace of the walk was set by the group. After the last stop, the guide told us how to get back to our hotel or the next thing we wanted to do. We walked a little more to public transportation and other called uber. I do not know how many km we walked but you might to call the company who does this tour: telephone 514 812 2003). Highly recommend this tour.
