About
Cuyabeno Reserve, the second-largest in all of Ecuador, is located in the Amazon Region, in the northeastern part of Ecuador. It is traversed by the Cuyabeno, Aguarico and SanMiguel rivers, with a complex system of lagoons to complement the main water sources. Cuyabeno is one of the most biodiverse nature reserves on Earth, with over 500 bird species, 350 birds, 100 mammals, and over 400,000 plant species. There are 5 different indigenous ethnic groups living along its banks, the Siona, Secoya, Cofan, Quichua, and Shuar. Each community has its own territory, beliefs, and practices, but they all share a deep respect for nature and a simple way of life-based largely on hunting and gathering. Cuyabeno Reserve is under threat from the oil industry and deforestation, which is why today it is more than ever paramount to protect this valuable ecosystem.

Go to Waita Lodge for your Amazon Experience!
Jul 2021
Folks, there are no words that begin to describe the experience we just had in Ecuador thanks to Esteban at Ecuatraveling, Diego and the entire crew at Waita Lodge, and all of the wonderful people of Ecuador! Esteban curated the whole experience and was very stress free to work with, answering all of our questions in a timely manor and finding solutions and enhancements for the trip at every stage. We travelled very confidently knowing that Esteban was supporting us. Visiting the Amazon Rainforest has been my #1 bucket list item since I was a small child. We booked a trip for March 2020 and when Ecuador closed their borders the team at Ecuatraveling made right with a travel credit right away. We rebooked for August and decided to add another week to go to Galapagos on the Magic of Isabela tour. Ecuatraveling hand selects the absolute best guides, hotels, activities, and locations to visit and the only thing we would change is to add more time to everything we did! Cuyabeno is the best place in Ecuador to be remote and experience the widest biodiversity that the Ecuadorian Amazon has to offer. The food, accomodations, and activities at Waita Lodge were second to none. If you've read reviews of Nicky Lodge, you need to know that Waita Lodge is the same location that Nicky was at until recently, so when folks talk about being remote and not seeing other tourists, the location is actually now Waita. When they talk about the guides being knowledgable, they are actually talking mostly about Diego who is now running Waita Lodge. We saw every species of animal and plant I have dreamed of since I as a child. The lodge offered a great mix of activities with some downtime during the uncomfortably hot part of the day, where you were free to do as you please. If you come to Ecuador, do not overlook Quito and the surrounding areas! We viewed the stop in Quito as a travel necessity but did have a couple of extra days. While we only did tours around Quito and Otavalo market, we wish we had more time to visit the hot springs, volcanoes, and cloud forest. One 'pro tip' I will note is that if you are traveling in Ecuador, you should plan to add at least 1 extra day in between your land-based travel and your flights. In Ecuador you learn that you should be 'prepared for anything' and sometimes things happen that cause travel delays out of your hands. No big deal, enjoy the ride and be stress free because you will make sure to have at least 1 extra day in between, right? In the Galapagos, Isabela is a clear choice for a place to visit as it is more remote, has all of the key wildlife, and some serious 'edge of the world' activities like Volcan Negro aka the surface of Mars. Be prepared to do a lot of walking in the Galapagos! I am really not sure what else to say to hammer this point home so I will just say it directly. If you want an ADVENTURE (not a 'vacation') in Ecuador, the Galapagos, or the Amazon Rainforest, stop your search now and just contact Esteban at Ecuatraveling!

My favorite trip so far in Ecuador
Feb 2021
I've been living in Ecuador for almost two years now and out of all of the trips that I've taken here, my experience with the Cuyabeno Waita Lodge has been the best. Diego and Evi were outstanding guides and are very knowledgeable about both plant and animal life. The itinerary provided included early morning birdwatching, night and day walks in the jungle, and paddle boarding down the river. As a vegetarian, I was very pleased with my meals and the kitchen staff had no issues with making small changes when necessary.

Each cabin is divided into two bedrooms with their own bathroom with a flushing toilet and shower. My friends and I were provided with clean towels and mosquito nets for the beds. There is a social area in the main building with games, hammocks, seating, and complimentary coffee and tea. There's also a bar with wine, beer, and liquor, at additional cost. At the beginning of the trip, all guests received a rapid covid test and our temperatures were taken every day. Staff at the lodge are also tested regularly. I felt very safe while I was on the trip and I feel like the necessary precautions were taken to make sure that everyone remained healthy.

Lastly, the guides were very clear about the mission of the lodge. It provides employment to members of the surrounding indigenous community and they hope that this project will benefit indigenous peoples in the long run. Everyone was super welcoming and friendly and I hope that I can return to Waita soon.

Dear Alisha Thank you very much for your comments, we are beyond grateful to read your words, our project is indeed super compromised with the community and our ecological activities, only seek the opportunity of creating better opportunities for them and of course for us. These times have been super hard for us as for the rest of the planet, nevertheless these kind of reviews makes us believe that there are better times coming soon. Thank you again for your words and please keep in mind that you are always more than welcome in our Lodge. Best wishes, Ecuatraveling staff!!

Once in a life time experience
Feb 2021
I have just returned from a life-changing experience at the Amazon, specifically Waita Lodge. The entire process from booking with the Agency (Mike) was caring & professional. The food was phenomenal & the tour guides were awesome. Diego, Evi and Andres were outstanding. Always ensuring we were sought after and with so much patience Thoroughly explaining all types of animals - their knowledge was spot on & as well their patience. At the lodge one of the staff members - Alex was great. Every one was fantastic and I highly recommend the experience to everyone. You will feel safe, well cared for and with lots of professionalism. I conquered many fears and now I am ready to return. A big THANK YOU to everyone at the Waita Lodge , the canoe drivers, and Mike from the agency for making this a one of a lifetime experience.
The COVID procedures were perfect, we took rapid COVID test to begin the adventure, our temperature was taken on a daily basis, staff members wearing masks, hand sanitizer everywhere in the lodge. Certainly I have crossed one more of my bucket list items!!! Grateful!!

Dear Veronica, Thank you very much for taking the time to share your experience in our lodge, we are genuinely proud of our staff. This kind of feedback is really important for us, specially now that is so difficult to find the time to travel, at the same time we are happy that we can work along with the locals communities in Cuyabeno, receiving this kind of reviews increase our compromise to keep working even harder to keep providing amazing experiences for our visitors. We wish you the best !! Ecuatraveling Staff!

Great experience
Nov 2020
This was a great trip. Here is a list of the reasons why I would choose Waita Lodge again if I had to do this trip once again in the future.
1. The lodge is beautiful. It is far from the other lodges, which makes it even a better experience. In addition it works with the local communities, which I very much appreciated it.
2. The staff was super profesional from the start to the end. The booking process was smooth. The driver was on time. The communication of each activity was on point.
3. The guide, Diego, was the best guide I have ever met. He is super knowledgeable and more than anything you can tell that he really likes what he is doing. During our tour it rained a lot, but he did his best to reorganize activities accordingly and to give us a great experience. I highly highly recommend you ask for him as your guide. Youw ont regret it.
4. The food was sooo delicious. Beto was the cook. OMG, he made all kind of amazing dishes (I am vegetarian). Super impressed.
5. The tour itself was packed with activities. Unfortunately, as I said, it rained quite a lot during our time there. But nevertheless, we did a lot of activities and learned a lot about the jungle.
6. I felt very safe with all the COVID precautions that they took.

Amazing experience
Feb 2020
Ecuatraveling is a company with a lot of knowledge about Ecuador. They responded very fast and were really helpful. I am so happy they recommended me to do this trip because it was such an amazing experience!

I stayed for 4 days at the Waita lodge and it was incredible! The staff has a lot of knowledge about the area and all the animals which live there. They spotted all of them and we even saw a sloth. I did paddleboarding here, which was the most amazing experience ever. While being on our boards we spotted many pink dolphins that were playing around us.

The food was very good and when laying in the hammocks you can enjoy all the sounds of the jungle.

I have just returned from a wonderful long weekend at Waita lodge. It was truly special in every regard whether it be the attention to detail and hospitality of the Waita lodge staff or the natural wildlife on display. Diego is a brilliant tour guide who not only knows the ins and outs of the jungle but also a great peoples person and thoroughly enjoyed his company. As well as that from the local community members who work at Waita lodge such as Lenin, Leroy, Rita, Alexis and many more who always had a smile on their face and catered for any possible needs.

The nature and wildlife on display is breathtaking, you are in awe every time you go out to explore whether it be the magical sounds that certain birds can make or monkeys swinging around from tree to tree, I would not hesitate to return and the uncertainty of possibly not seeing certain animals makes it all so special when you do so them out in their natural habitat.

I would like to finish by thanking Michael Cantos of Hump Day Hostel, for introducing me to this wonderful trip and experience in the jungle and the opportunity to observe the every day life of the nature. The private transfer was to a very high standard and was efficient and the free night at the hostel on the night of your return is a very nice touch. It was a superb trip and would love to return one day.

Amazing jungle trip in the Ecuadorean Amazon
Jan 2020 • Solo
Waita Lodge has been the highlight of my Ecuadorean trip so far.
Located in the Cuyabeno protected area in the amazon, far from the modern world, surrounded by tropical rainforest and a lot of wildlife is the place you must see once in your life.

The trip itself to Waita Lodge is already an adventure, once you reach the aguarico river you'll cruise downstream with a canoe for about 3 hours, getting more and more into the wild and stunning beauty of the Amazon forest.

I completely fell in love with this place and its harmony with the nature.
The main cabin has a fantastic view on a calm laguna, it has a nice and long table, in this area you will have all your meals prepared by chef Beto with delicious, healthy and fresh local ingredients.
Still in the main cabin you'll find also an amazing jungle bar and a chill out area with a very interesting library and hammocks where you can rest between the multiple activities like night and day jungle walks, bird watching, night and day canoe river cruising all included in this experience.

The sleeping cabins are simply and comfortably furnished, very nice bathroom with daily cleaning service.
Private balcony with hammock.

Friendly staff, always ready to help:)

Our guide was Diego, a very funny and humble guy, a nature lover and a very acknowledged person.
He developed unreal skills in the jungle, able to spot all type of animals from considerable distance, really impressed by his sharp vision, and on how he recognized easily all kind of mammals, birds, reptiles, fishes and insects with a quick look and just hearing for a moment at their sounds.
It was a pleasure to learn about the local flora and fauna from him, he explained in detail the characteristics of the plants and and the social behaviours of each animal we saw, the interactions between different species, the symbiotic relationships between insects and plants, he made this experience truly wonderful.

Waita Lodge collaborates with a local community, sharing their territory, and respecting it, i loved the help program and how they involved the locals in an ethical, fair qnd sustainable way for the environment.

Overall an excellent stay, I highly recommend it to people who want to have a non commercial jungle experience, this is the authentic Amazon.

Many thanks

Adriano
