About
Ely Cathedral, with its unique 14th century octagonal lantern tower, is counted among the marvels of the medieval world. Much of the cathedral is over 900 years old and it offers a rich architectural history, including the sumptuous 13th Century Quire and beautiful 14th Lady Chapel. The Nave is the third longest in the UK. The famous Octagon Tower, sometimes referred to as The Lantern, is a wonder of the medieval world and globally recognised as a masterpiece of engineering. In recent years Ely has gained global recognition as a prominent film location including Elizabeth: The Golden Age, The Other Boleyn Girl, Macbeth, The King’s Speech and The Crown. Easily accessible by train, visitors can enjoy a whole day in Ely with its attractive riverside, tea rooms, shops and many other attractions including Oliver Cromwell House. As the Cathedral is a busy, working church, please do check any 'cathedral closures' before you visit.

Wealthy religious organisation which is not accessible to all
Normally charge £8 per person to get in, then another £16.50 per person to go up the tower (we never intended to go up the tower).. if we had to pay these prices, I would have given it just one star… luckily it was harvest festival so it was free to get in. It’s totally NOT WORTH the money if I had to pay, Appreciating this is a place or worship, and the Church already is extremely wealthy, this should be accessible to all, not just those with a disposable income !!! I thought religion was for all.

Inside the cathedral was interesting, a lot of history, which is what you would expect.

Thank you for your comments. We apologise that there seems to be some confusion around the cost of Cathedral entry and the cost of the Tower Tours. Entry to the cathedral is £8 and a Tower Tour is an additional £10. We are sorry if this is not clear and we will definitely relook at how this is worded on the website. We are always very happy to be contacted directly if something needs clarifying or sorting out. The Tower Tours last for one hour and are led by one of our expert guides who will tell you all the history and back stories as you climb up to enjoy the views from the top. We keep tour groups small, no more than ten people, so you can get a really good experience with plenty of time to ask questions. We think the tours are good value for money and a truly memorable experience. We hope this has clarified things and that you come back and enjoy it for yourself at some time in the future.

Rainy day and after enjoying world reknowned treacle tart and custard at the Almonry we decided to visit the magnificent Ely Cathedral. The scale and magnitude is incredible. How did they do it? The staff were lovely. The lady at reception was so helpful with suggestions on how to optimize our visit - fabulous. Stained Glass Museum was so interesting and unique worth the trip. Unexpected lovely day. 🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼 ....... parking is *FREE* in Ely.

Use the cathedral's own site! On the day we planned to visit & purchased tickets direct through the Trip Advisor site, it turns out the cathedral was closed due to ordination ceremonies. Somehow there had been a breakdown in comms between the cathedral & TA.

Thank you for your review and apologies that the cathedral was closed on the day of your visit and the inconvenience that this caused. Unfortunately, due to being a busy, working church the cathedral is occasionally closed and we advise checking their website before you travel. This information is listed under ‘Before You Go’ and is now included in the Product Overview too to try and prevent any future confusion.

Well worth the money.

It had always been my wish to visit Ely Cathedral and when i saw that Trip Advisor was marketing tickets, it was an easy choice to buy through them. The purchasing was easy, and when i raised a query about times, they took my number and phoned back with the answer. The Cathedral is wonderful and well worth the visit, and booking through Trip Advisor simple.
