Steam Trains, Whitby, and the North York Moors Full-Day Tour from York

Select Date and Travellers
2 travellers
Explore the stunning North York Moors by road and steam train on this wonderful small-group day trip from York. Travel through the beautiful Yorkshire countryside and visit the fabulous seaside town of Whitby, famous for its association with Captain James Cook and featured in Bram Stoker's Dracula, before boarding a steam train for a journey across the majestic North York Moors. You'll see the best of the Moors, spend time by the seaside and visit the charming railway station made famous as 'Hogsmeade Station' in the Harry Potter films.
  • Travel around North Yorkshire in comfort by climate-controlled minivan
  • Hear the history of the region from an onboard guide as you travel
  • Start and finish at a convenient location in the center of York city
  • Discover filming sites from Harry Potter with the help of your guide
What to Expect
Leave York and travel into the North Yorkshire countryside to the pretty market town of Helmsley. Stretch your legs on a walk through the center, before continuing high into the hills. Then, arrive in North York Moors National Park for a stroll across its heather-filled moorland, learning about Yorkshire’s mining and farming heritage.
Venture onward to coastal Whitby for some free time to explore the harbor, or perhaps treat yourself to an English seaside classic of fish 'n' chips.
Later, travel to Goathland, aka Aidensfield in the UK Heartbeat series, to see filming locations aplenty. Harry Potter fans are also in for a treat—the railway site doubled as Hogsmeade Station in the films.
Finish on a high note, traveling via steam train across the moors to Pickering. From here, it’s back on the coach to York.

A full day of interesting places off the beaten track (except for Whitby) with a knowledgable commentary from a guide who grew up in the area.

We had the York sightseeing three day pass so it included the steam train. I think it is only around 12 or 13 pounds though if you pay for it separately. It is not a long train ride but enjoyable. Maybe there is a longer... More
