- danielhN9862QH0 contributionsMagic in the Lake District with Beatrix Pitter.A truly magical tour which brings Beatrix Pottet to life. Tim is an excellent guide. He is incredibly knowledgeable. His showing us Potter's watercolors in her books was a stunning addition. He showed us the inspiration of each painting with the real life scene. The half day went by way too fast. I could have spent a whole day on this tour.Written 14 October 2024
- JimB0bH0 contributionsPerfect Day!What a tremendous day! We love ACGAS and dreamed of seeing the places it’s been filmed. We saw Pumphrey Manor; the crossroads where James first arrived and meets Helen; the church where Helen calls it off with Hugh; the bridge where James and Hugh struggle to decide who will back up and let the other through; the main town used for Darrowby (including the front Skeldale house, the Drovers Arms, the green grocers); the village green where James meets the bus when his parents arrive for the wedding;the Falcon Inn, where his parents stay; the back of Skeldale house; the exterior and interior of the churches used for James and Helen’s wedding; and the Alderson’s farm; and had a delightful lunch at the pub used for one of the interiors of the Drovers Arms. It was truly a delightful way to see the Yorkshire Dales come alive through and outside of the lens of the show! Our guide, Tim, was excellent! He has really taken the time to study up on the show and the real-life James Herriot (Alf White), enjoys the show as much as his guests, and was just a delight to spend the day with asking about the Dales then and now. The pace was leisurely and he let us take as many pictures was we wanted and explore as long as we wanted (obviously keeping us to the schedule). At each stop, he also shows us scene where the location was used, indicating directions and things to notice about the scene and the reality. He also spent time tell on us about the history or other unique characteristics of the places we visited. It was just the best day! We loved it and would recommend the tour to anyone who is a fan of the show or just wants to see the Dales in a unique way.Written 13 October 2024

Tim is beyond knowkedese---witty, clever, full of stories and anecdotes. Visited every possible filming site from All Creatures Great and Small. Lunch was excellent at Craven Arms ("Darrowby"). From Alderson farm to the church where James and Helen married to Skeldale House. The entire day was magical. The Yorkshire Dales are magnificent. Tim was the perfect guide. Again, I have no hesitation in giving my tour an excellent rating. I have now taken every tour this company offers and have never been disappointed. Tim, our driver/guide did a wonderful job of providing insightfully information regarding the life, legacy, and accomplishments of Beatrix Potter. Although I had already been to almost every part of the English Lake District before, this tour covered some new ground for me. I especially enjoyed Tim’s enthusiasm for Beatrix Potter’s personality; I found myself totally engaged and enchanted .

Although we are familiar with Beatrix Potter's work and have read some of her books as and to children, we are not fanatics. With this context, we found the tour to be time well-spent. Our guide, Tim, was very knowledgeable and provided an excellent tour that covered Beatrix Potter's life, her interaction with the Lake District, and her lasting impact while also placing her life in a broader social and historical context.

This was one of the best decisions I made on my trip. It was a last minute decision I was glad I made. The time flew by so fast and I wished it could go on for longer.
Our tour guide Tim was a master storyteller and so knowledgeable about the locale, Beatrix Potter's story and Lakes District history/gist in general. It felt like being shown around by a friendly local who is fond of the place and knows people at all the destinations. I thoroughly enjoyed it and left inspired by the amazing life of Beatrix Potter. What a woman.
There was no way I would have put together such a cohesive and enlightening journey through her life in about 4 hours. If you’re thinking about it, DO IT! You’ll love it.

What a wonderful morning trip delving into the life of Beatrix Potter!
There was just a mass of detail that we knew nothing about.
Tim, out driver and host, became a friend indeed during this trip that we shared with two Americans and two Aussies.
We drove at a leisurely pace (or rather Tim drove) through the wonderful Lake District where Beatrix Potter set her stories. We had time to wander round Hill Top, the house that Peter Rabbit bought (or rather his sales funds bought). This was fascinating.
Stories about Wray Castle, Tarn Hows and Hawshead Village added to our delight. So many links from the views we had to the illustrations in the “little books”.
Tim added details about The Campbell Family when we saw Coniston Water in addition to the sight of so many farms that Beatrix bought. He added to that a summary of Wordsworth’s life in The Lakes.
We drove over roads so narrow that a bus couldn’t have used them, feeling safe in Tim’s hands at the wheel.
Thanks Tim for a great morning out in the sunshine that you specially arranged for our trip.

We really enjoyed visiting Hilltop. In the van there were 4 seniors who were still quite capable, another adult and a 6 year old. When we asked that the 6 year old and his mother be allowed to sit in the forward seat in the van so that the 6 year old who is short for his age could see out the front window, the tour guide refused. This got us miffed from the start so we were uncomfortable for much of the tour.

Thank you for your review for a tour which took place a month ago, and the opportunity to explain to everyone exactly what happened as I was the guide on this tour.
We do always place children in the rear seats of the van for obvious comfort and safety reasons relating to all the other passengers, particularly those who are not related to the child. Also, we do not carry booster seats for children, therefore, again for comfort and safety, we invariably place children in the back and require them to wear a seatbelt properly which you did not always comply with and I had to constantly keep asking you to put the seatbelt around the child as it is meant to be worn. We have to do this by law as the driver explained clearly twice, yet you kept sliding it off him.
Of the full group of 6 passengers, the maximum for the van, there were two other seniors, a couple, who were not related to you. As I said on the day, I would never split up a couple uneccessarily and certainly not for a child who has to sit on the back row. Your husband (the grandfather of the child) sat next to the couple initially and you (the grandmother) and your daughter the mother) sat with the child on the back row. I explained the situation with the child to you and even after that you were quite rude in demanding that the other, senior and unrelated couple to you should move to the back seat so that your daughter AND grandson could sit there. Obviously this was very discourteous to both the driver and myself and the couple concerned.
Despite this, after one of the stops, you did replace the grandfather with the child without asking permission or notifying either the driver or myself. While sat there, the child never once looked out of the window or showed any sign of wanting to, he just was wriggling around, speaking loudly and playing with a toy. He didn't know who Beatrix Potter was or any of the characters from the books and at one point became noisy and wilful. Luckily for you, the other senior couple were very good manered and were willing to interact with him to keep him quiet.
You got your wish in the end but it was against our instructions and, frankly, futile as the child didn't care.
Please next time you go on a tour with other people, try to consider how they feel and how genuine and realistic your demands are for the group as a whole. We seat people very carefully with many considerations for the groups safety and comfort in our vans. We also do our very best to comply with our guests wishes when they are fair and reasonable which yours were not. I don't believe any tour guide or other passengers in a van would expect anyone to demand us to split up the seating of a senior couple for a child who is not interested or cares.
I'm sorry that you were miffed but your demands were not safe, reasonable or polite which is why I refused them. At the end of the tour, the other couple thanked me for not splitting them up, they should not have had to do that and wouldn't have if you had stayed seated as we instructed at the start of the tour.

It felt like she was there. Her 1600s home, gardens, belongings are as pristine as the day she left. She was cremated and her ashes spread at her favorite sketching place just feet away. The barn is also just there. As a female entrepreneur during the Victorian age of the late 1800s, and an avid gardener, she is a kindred spirit and I love her.

Enjoyed the tour. Was not a die hard Beatrix Potter fan before the tour but gained an appreciation for her by the end. Learned some cool history about English buildings and the surrounding area. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and was able to answer any questions we had. We had to finish the tour early because of our train departure time and our guide was more than happy to accommodate this. Saw some nice scenic views of the lake district as well.

So pleased that you enjoyed the tour and that you know a bit more about Beatrix Potter and the Lakes. Our guides are always happy to answer any questions and will always do their best to get our guests to train stations, bus stops, car parks and dinner reservations in an emergency. Hope you got the train ok!

Tim's accounts of Beatrix Potter were so interesting. I learned so much about this amazing woman in such a wonderful way. Tim used Beatrix's stories and drawings to illustrate his accounts and taught us that she was sO much more than her stories. Everybody should learn about her - she is an example to the world. Thank you Tim!

We will be coming from Kendal and on our way to Coniston by bus. If we break the journey in Windermere to do the tour, is it possible to bring our luggage on the tour bus? Do we miss anything if we leave the tour in Coniston, which is Stop 5.
Written 23 May 2021
we can carry a small amount of luggage. The stop 5 is Coniston Water not the village of Coniston. You would miss the farm that was used in the film "Miss Potter'.
Written 26 May 2021
Not on this tour as the stop in Hawkshead is a guided tour of the village. Our full day Beatrix Potter tour visits the gallery.
