About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- T2661RZbethh0 contributions90s evening cruiseBooked here for my sisters hen do. Found the booking process easy enough. Wasn't sure what to expect, but we had such a good time. The weather was perfect, which added to it. There was plenty of space, and we sat downstairs for a bit before going on the top deck for a dance. Managed to get drinks ok at the bar..toilets were busy as the night went on. It was fab, I would definitely recommend it.Written 27 September 2024
- andyadkinsa0 contributionsTrains and boats and open top bussesA short train trip from where I was staying took me to the impressive offices of the Mersey Ferry Company by the Liverpool Building and Beatles statue. I easily exchanged my voucher for bus and ferry tickets, and as I had just missed a ferry, they run on the hour, I had a short wait for the open top bus. The bus which leaves from outside the ferry offices, was quite full, but I managed to get a nice seat at the front. The trip around the inner city was very interesting and our guide was very informative with a story or joke for every occasion. The trip took about 40 minutes, and returned us to the ferry offices. I queued for the ferry which wasn't long in coming, and boarding was easy, I managed to get a nice seat on the upper deck. The ferry itself was very tired and quite noisy, and it was quite disappointing not to be either to hear the pre recorded commentary at times, as it was either too quiet or the engine noise drowned it out! I understand a new ferry is being built but this will not be commissioned soon. It would have been nice to have a live commentary to pick up on things like the new Everton Stadium, and the labour party conference which was being prepared. It was nice on the River which did make up for some of the shortcomings, and there were good photo opportunities, so not all bad!Written 21 September 2024

- lukebZ1682EL0 contributionsDown the river of mediocritySo I went on the Manchester Ship Cancel cruise which is one of the full day trips and we had issues from the off. Firstly, as it doesn't say anywhere but needs saying that if you get the Liverpool pick up at 10 rather than the other pick up at 9 you will be getting a worse seat for it. All of the good seats go by the time you board in Liverpool. Secondly they overbook meaning that there are not enough seats for everyone and people will have to stand this is an issue if you get on at the second stop and have mobility issues. Thirdly, the cruise is not for those that want to learn about history or the area, as the commentary boils down often to there's a boat, there's a coal pit etc. There are few to no interesting stories or jokes. Fourthly the staff are quite rude and standoffish at times and don't show the proper deference to the customers who have spent a decent amount of money on the trip. Fifthly during our tour the boat was stuck between two bridges for a long while and other than saying a few updates no apologies were said for the delay this would have on passengers especially those traveling on, let alone any offers of compensation or even an apology. Finally, the last part of the cruise features music and that's fine but I would have appreciated somewhere to go where it wasn't playing as it made having conversations hard on the way back. Overall, deeply not worth the price.Written 12 September 2024
- Donna H0 contributionsSailing down the Mersey into the Manchester Ship CanalTrip down the Manchester Ship Canal from Mersey Ferries Seacombe Well organised trip with plenty to see. Great for geology, bird watching, history of the area. Our speaker gave interesting information on the Mersey and its surrounds, without notes! Then on the way back nice live music. I booked the Mersey River Cruise several months in advance, as part of my partners surprise trip to Liverpool - I was left SO disappointed and upset, as didn’t get to take the trip, after two attempts of trying to go. On the first day (Monday 30th) we went to take the trip, and Mersey Ferries had decided not to run the last boat at 4pm (which I had specifically called ahead about the week before, to confirm times etc, and they had assured me that we would be able to ride the last boat at 4.00pm! It also stated this on the board outside the ticket office *see photos below*). On arrival to the ticket office at 3.15pm, they had locked the doors (and were sat behind their desks and wouldn’t come to the door). I had to call up and speak to them from outside the door, and was told that I had been misinformed regarding ferry times when I had called prior, and that the last boat had sailed at 3.00pm. I expressed my disappointment, particularly as I had specifically called ahead of time due to it being a birthday trip. I asked if I could transfer the ride to the following day and they said that I could. I returned the following day to redeem my tickets and take the 1.00pm boat ride, to be greeted by the sign below, and was told that there was no Mersey Ferry rides running all day, due to operational issues. I was so disappointed and couldn’t even receive a refund, as Mersey Ferries didn’t distribute my tickets and I would need to contact Trip Advisor. There were many people with the same issues as myself and also people stuck, not being able to get across to the other side. Very disappointing and very poor customer service at the ticket office.

Please accept our apologies for the disappointment and inconvenience of not being able to take a Mersey River Cruise during your trip to Liverpool. For the Christmas and New Year period, we were operating a revised timetable which included a reduced service on the 30th December, with hourly Liverpool departures from 11am to 3pm. This timetable was advertised on our website and via social media but was not clearly advertised at the ferry terminal. We are assuming that you called our contact centre directly and was given the incorrect timetable information. We are investigating this matter further. Unfortunately on the 31st December, we were unable to provide a cruise service due to operational difficulties. Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention and I hope you will have an opportunity to take a ferry ‘cross the Mersey again in the future.

Get wrapped up warmly if the weather is cool because its pretty draughty once you hit the water…even in mid June this year it was cold on the open decked area.
Great little trip on the ferry that has an informative recorded commentary. The tannoy blasts out a short burst of the famous “Ferry Across the Mersey” when you set off which made us laugh!
We hopped off at the Woodside terminal & had a stroll about for an hour & then took the ferry back. If you are going to do this you have to inform the terminal staff who will amend your return booking to a different time.
We were told that there are “commuter” tickets available that run until something like 09.00 where you can use the same boat to cross the Mersey but it’s at a reduced cost…presumably no commentary & mainly used by locals.

Thank you for the great review, it sounds like you really enjoyed the River Explorer Cruise. Now that restrictions have lifted a bit more we have gone back to freesale tickets so that people can choose to sail on any service that day, rather than a timed ticket. You are correct that we have a commuter service that runs between Woodside and the Pier Head . Departures are every 20 mins from 07.20 - 9.40 and 17.00 - 18.40 and the crossing is just 10 minutes (full details on our website). We hope to see you again one day.

Very disappointing. The ferry was late arriving for our departure and my total time on board either side of stopping off at the Woodside ferry village was 40 minutes not 50, with 5 minutes of that spent at Woodside. On the video on the website Woodside looks a lively place with music and craft stalls. On the day of my visit on a hot Thursday at the peak of the tourist season there was nothing there other than the eating zone. I went for a wander but having seen nothing interesting after 20 minutes I went back to Woodside for a coffee. The U boat attraction was closed and the only other thing at the village was a tiny shop.
The ferry is okay for a bit of fresh air and it's always nice for us landlubbers to be on water but that's about it for me. It was hard to hear much of the commentary, as mentioned in many other reviews, but clearly nothing has been done about it and it is also still out of sync. The boat doesn't get very close to either shore and there isn't actually that much to see, even on the more interesting Liverpool side. The view of the Three Graces is actually obstructed by the building in which the ferry ticket office is located. Never worth the £11 adult ticket price, though as every ferry I saw was packed I am sure the operators will feel they are justified in what they offer.

Thank you for the review. Firstly apologies that the ferry was late and the cruise was slightly shorter than normal. We continue to operate with additional Covid safety measures which can impact our timings particularly at peak times. Passengers boarding at Pier Head, Liverpool do have the option of visiting Woodside and returning on a later ferry or completing the full round trip. In addition to the Woodside Food Village there are some interesting short walks from Woodside, particularly Hamilton Square which is second only to Trafalgar Square in London for having the most Grade I listed buildings in one place in England.
We did have some commentary volume issues with the Royal Iris vessel a few weeks ago. Since the end of July the Snowdrop vessel (Dazzle Ferry) has been operating the service. The commentary volume and syncing issues referred to in your review will be checked by our operational team.
I’m sorry you were disappointed with the overall experience and thank you again for bringing this to our attention.

The famous ferry across the Mersey is well worth doing especially if you combine it with the multi ticket which includes a circuit of Liverpool on the tourist bus and a trip up to the top of Liverpool Cathedral tower. It takes about 1 hour to do the full circuit on the ferry with the option to get off at Seacombe and Woodside ferry terminals and catch a later ferry. The ticket also gives you free entry to the U-boat Story at Woodside which has a World War 1 U boat on display (which had been recovered off the sea bed). The ferry also gives you a running commentary of what you can see in the harbour area as you pass famous or interesting landmarks. The ferry has a café on board if you need a brew etc. The ticket can be used once for each attraction over a two day period except for the ferry trip which has to be used on the day of purchase.

Unfortunately we could hardly hear the commentary which was a shame. We took the ferry on a very hot date in July, it was packed, and with other customer speaking loudly and the sound of the boat’s engine itself, we could hardly distinguish the words in the onboard commentary. Yes, views are nice but if you can’t understand what is being said about them then it’s a bit pointless.
Another issue is that the trip did not feel covid safe at all. People were standing closely in the queues to get on board, no one wearing masks except us. Staff did not reinforce any social distancing, use of sanitisers or masks.

Hello Sunny, thank you for your feedback , we do appreciate it. We apologise for the problem with the PA system on the Royal Iris, this ferry has now been replaced by Snowdrop (Dazzle Ferry) and the PA system is working across the vessel. We do have processes in place to maintain cleanliness, social distancing and we do remind customers that there is a requirement to wear a face covering for their entire journey on the ferry. Customers are informed of this via information on our website, on site signage and audio safety messages at the start of the cruise. The ferry capacity has been reduced significantly to provide more space on the vessel and we are asking visitors to book online. We have been awarded the official UK ‘We’re Good To Go’ mark to show that we have followed government and industry Covid-19 guidelines.

My daughter & I bought tickets for the River Explorer Cruise, leaving from the Woodside ferry terminal on Sunday 23rd January. The commentary was very informative & the views were excellent. We spent the day in Liverpool then arrived back at the ferry terminal in Liverpool to find the last ferry of the day back to Woodside had been withdrawn from service due to a technical problem with the ferry. Stranded on the opposite side of the Mersey from our car on the Wirral, we spoke to some very helpful staff at the ticket office who immediately contacted the railway station & arranged for them to honour our tickets. Within 20 minutes we were back at our car! I emailed Mersey Ferries who very promptly refunded the cost of our cruise tickets - just 24 hours after we’d found ourselves stranded. All the ferry company staff we spoke to were helpful, polite & friendly but special thanks to Sue, the company’s Groups Officer, who so promptly dealt with my email & authorised a refund. Can thoroughly recommend. We will return & finish the cruise very soon!

Warm welcome at ticket desk, card payment only sadly they don’t take cash.
Would say the shop inside there is very expensive compared to other local shops selling the same merchandise.
We picked a very cold and choppy time, but don’t ever let that put you off the experience.
Highly recommend, sadly the only very disappointing experience was the running commentary which was totally out sink with the views, and it didn’t in places tell you what side of the river you were looking for the particular thing they were talking about, but being prerecorded sadly this might happen, such a shame as not knowing the location of things I felt we missed out.
All in all I say it’s worth the time to do this.

Thank you for giving us 4 stars and for such useful feedback, we do appreciate it. We are currently testing new GPS technology for our commentary and it should be up and running very soon. As I'm sure you can appreciate, a strong tide/ wind and also other shipping can occasionally mean the commentary gets a little out of sync. The new technology will alleviate this.
Thank you for recommending us to others.

Really not worth the money, £11 each, a commentary that is out of sync with the land mark's and not loud enough. Literally one side to another, taking the long way round, few verses of ferry across the mersey a few times then off the boat. £11 each, really !!

Birthday weekend after walking around the docks we was sucked into buying the hop on hop off bus tour and the Mersey river cruise, first of all your not on the boat for 50 min we found the information quite boring and the boat only went 3/4 of a mile before it turned around made a drop of on the opposite side. .
Not worth the trip to be honest and they didn’t even check your tickets so you could just walk on

It was a good round trip but one thing I thought was really missing was an actual rendition of the song Ferry Cross The Mersey on the PA system!! There was a muffled bit of the title on the PA which was not very loud OR clear and judging by everyone wanting to join in, it was sadly lacking. If they played a clear version of the song at the end of the trip, I'm sure you would have had hundreds singing along and leaving the ferry with a joyful trip rather than just leaving. After all, I'm sure its the song bringing all the passengers, not just the trip itself...

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review and we are glad you enjoyed your cruise. We do play Ferry ‘cross the Mersey at the start of the cruise and a slightly longer segment as we approach Liverpool at the end of trip. We do regularly review the content of the recorded commentary and appreciate your feedback on this important part of the cruise experience.

As far as I can remember, you cannot book a specific time slot. You make a booking online for the day that you want and when you get there, the ticket office will allocate your tickets for the time that you want, providing that space is available. If you arrive there in plenty of time, there should be no problem. You can find all the details and make bookings, on the Mersey Ferries website. There is a cafe next door, where you can get food and refreshments, whilst you wait.
