Bumpy Ride, Beautiful Sites
Oct 2019
Overall, our tour Oxford and Cambridge was pretty great. Both universites are so historic and worth a visit.

We had a very attentive and helpful guide (her name escapes me but she used a yellow ducky umbrella to help us keep track of her in crowds). She had a smaller Spanish speaking group within our mainly English speaking tour group and she did a great job accommodating and helping both groups - including translating into Spanish for them.

Regrettably, what was very unpleasant were the rides from London to Cambridge, Cambridge to Oxford and then Oxford back to London. We took a tour a few days earlier to Stonehenge and the ride was just fine. But on this visit to Oxford and Cambridge, our driver had a very "stop-and-go"/herky-jerky way of driving that made both my wife and I extremely uncomfortable and motion sick. Based on our other bus tours around London and other parts of England, this style of driving was totally unpleasant and distracted from both the countryside and the otherwise amazing aspects of this bus tour!

Our guide was informative and attentive as we saw the beautiful sites around both historic universities and towns. The frankly horrible driving of the driver was the only portion of this drive that was not at all enjoyable. If you are someone who struggles with motion/travel sickness you may just want to ask your driver to keep that in mind.

Wonderful day tour of two great university towns!

Anthony led us well and provided much more history and context than I expected. Both Cambridge and Oxford had spectacular architecture and stories. I recommend this day trip highly.

Thanks to Vaghan and Khan
Oct 2019 • Couples
Vaughan was very friendly and knowledgeable,we loved all his random facts. He was well organised and was able to keep us all together. Vaughan made sure we all knew how to get back to our hotels. We had even memorized all our names by the end of the day. Khan drove well and took us home safely. My husband and I would be happy to have him as our guide all the time.

Worst Travel Experience of My Life
Oct 2019
I was in London for work and decided to extend my trip just to take this tour last Saturday, and it was the biggest mistake of my life. I was skeptical to book a tour with this company due to the negative reviews, however it was the only Oxford and Cambridge tour I could find in October as Evan Evans stopped running theirs in September. I took an Evan Evans tour to Stonehenge, Bath and Windsor the Sunday prior and it was fabulous. Evan Evans' coach was equipped with usb ports so I was able to charge my phone throughout the 12 hour journey and I was expecting the same for Global Tours coaches, however that was not the case. I panicked as I was traveling solo and my phone was nearly dead, so I asked the guide THREE times between London and Cambridge if I could charge my phone at the front of the coach to which he kept telling me "later." Lo and behold, my phone finally dies in Cambridge and I am left on my own without a phone, camera, google maps, etc. The guide gave vague instructions on how to return to the coach ("see the building with the blue flag, turn right there on Silver st." so one would assume that upon turning right on Silver st. the coach would be right there. I arrived at Silver st. at 4:45 when we were not meant to meet until 5 and yet the coach was nowhere to be found. I ran up and down the street and all the side streets and asked anyone who looked like they worked in town if they know where the coaches park and the coach was nowhere to be found. I ran into a few shops to see if I could use their phone to call the Golden Tours number to no avail until I finally returned back to Cambridge Chauffeur Punts (where I had departed at 4:45) and the kind gentlemen there were able to help me charge my phone as well as call Golden Tours with their own phone. At this point it was 5:30 and of course, the coach was long gone, and I was told I would have to find my way back to London on my own. I was a wreck considering I am young woman traveling solo in a foreign country and was meant to fly back to America early the next morning. Thank God for the lovely men at Cambridge Chauffeur Punts as they ensured I made it to the train station and London safely and in a timely manner. I immediately called Golden Tours upon arriving back in London as I had my belongings on the coach and wanted to pick them up prior to flying back to America, only to be told the office was closed and I would have to go when they opened the following morning. Of course, I was unable to do so as my flight was leaving before they opened and instead asked if they could mail it to me in the states to which I was told I would have to e-mail customer service. I have been e-mailing customer service for a WEEK now and still do not have any answers on how I can get my belongings. They keep telling me to call the Victoria Station office who in return tell me I need to email customer service in order to get my things shipped to me. They are clearly not on the same page and have wasted my time and money on making these international phone calls for no reason. I have also requested a PARTIAL discount and the best they could do was offer me a 10% on a future tour. 1. I live in America and do not have any plans of visiting London again anytime soon so how does that benefit me? 2. Even if I were to return to London, why on Earth would I ever take another tour with them? Golden Tours ruined the last day of my trip and I highly recommend no one ever take a trip with this company. Stick with Evan Evans and you will not regret it!

Entertaining and fun
We had a very good time with our guide Von and Elvio. We visited the main spots in both university campuses.

The guides are highly knowledgeable and know intricate details you might miss if you were to visit independently. This makes the experience very worthwhile.

The only setback is the very limited time you will get to explore by yourself. Both campuses are quite far from London, so there is a significant travel time to account for. If you have a particular spot in mind you might like to visit, it is helpful to research first so you can make the best of your free time.

*Make sure you are not visiting on a particular event day as some colleges may be closed. (First day of school, graduation ceremonies, etc).

Short but sweet/Courtes mais interessantes
Sep 2019
Yesterday, we did Tour number 30 with Golden Tours, Oxford and Cambridge. As both cities are two hours from London and two hours from each other, we can imagine that we have little time to visit each one. In Cambridge, we visited the chapel and wandered in and around the "Colleges`', in Oxford we visited the famous dining hall (think Harry Potter) and again wandered around the centre of the town. It is just enough to wish for more ! The temperature was fantastic. I want to underline the marvellous work of our guide DAVID who is extremely well educated, erudite even, well spoken, even eloquent and infinitely patient with his flock. Though, he had to comment in both English and Spanish, it remained extremely interesting and easy to follow because of his good voice and excellent elocution. I want to thank ARMANDO, our tall, silent, patient and skillful chauffeur

Terrible Guide

This is the 3rd tour with Golden Tours whilst I visit London this time round. Cambridge & Oxford are amazing - seeing these two places has always been my dream. But, unfortunately, our Guide Ursula, despite her undoubtful experience, was unprofessional, lazy & she didn't put in minimal effort to explain or justify where we were going & why the tour would focus on these spots & not others. We had 3 transfers from London to Cambridge, then Cambridge to Oxford and finally from Oxford to London. We stayed on the bus six hours in total. The bus was freezing cold, despite asking to put the air-con down & we didn't have much opportunity to take naps, because Ursula's voice, which was high pitched, was constantly waking us up telling us irrelevant information, for example, how late we already are... She was erratic, didn't try to bond the group, nor did she show any effort to be informative or enthusiastic about the places we wanted to see/visit. We also did not have time to look around or do the basic souvenirs shopping in Oxford or buy food to eat!!! The packed lunch is not enough for a full day tour. Basically for £98, that's the price of this particular tour, we had a non-caring guide and a really freezing drive. And I don't think it's right...

Don’t waste your time
Jul 2019 • Family
This tour was awful from the start...”Golden Tours” is misnamed. To start, there was chaos on the street with too many buses and not enough staff to direct people properly. Our bus arrived late and departed late (putting us in way too much traffic). There was no WiFi on the bus, nor were the power plugs working to keep our mobile devices charged throughout the long day. The guide, Sasha, was disheveled at best (physically and mentally). She rattled on throughout the first 20-30 minutes - to the point where my son asked “Is the going to stop talking?” We arrived at Cambridge and she pretty much ran to different locations before allowing us to roam freely for 1.75 hours. The tour was rushed. My family decided to stay in Cambridge rather than deal with the nutty tour guide...stayed longer and did a cool boat ride around the colleges and had a yummy dinner. We hopped on the train back to London. I wish we would have saved a few hundred dollars and just taken the train into Cambridge from the start. Avoid this tour!

An Offensive Waste of Time and Money
Jun 2019
I wish we had never done business with this company, and I feel compelled to warn others before they make the same mistake.

The guide was abrasive, racist, rude, and inaccurate. She gave the bus a diatribe about how we would be dropped off in one location and picked up at the other end of town. She then walked off before everyone even had a chance to get out of the bus. This forced those seated in the back to literally run out in traffic to try to catch up with her.
Later she gave the entire group fifteen minutes to use one bathroom and then obnoxiously lectured one poor man when his daughters had the misfortune of being at the end of the line and not adhering to her ludicrous demands.

After a two hour stuffy bus ride, we arrived at King's College to discover it was closed to the public for the day. Her immediate reaction to this was to tell us one of her little "inside secrets." She said this had occurred due to the loud behavior of a tour group of Chinese people. Even if this were factually true, which I don't believe it was, the tasteless and racist way she said it was disturbing. There were exams occurring and signs posted saying there was a photo shoot in progress. I find both of those explanations far more plausible than her racist one.

If you are interested in seeing Oxford and Cambridge, do what the company didn't, call and make sure they are open to the public that day. Then go by bus, train, ox cart, or any way you can find, but don't go with Golden Tours.

Great tour of Cambridge and Oxford
Jun 2019 • Solo
I had a wonderful day tour to Cambridge and Oxford. The cathedral at King's College was inspiring and marvellous to see. There was ample time to even visit and browse the Cambridge Publishing bookstore. The Dining Room at Oxford was fabulous to see and it takes you back into an earlier era - it was filled with paintings of ex-Chancellors. Oxford has a very British village feeling.
The tour director was really great - highly knowledgeable and humorous on the way to our destinations and when on site. The coach driver was highly skilled and courteous.
I highly recommend this tour to any one who wants to capture the essence and atmosphere of these two university communities.
