1st class service & outstanding food! What a perfect way to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary!
We had the most amazing day on-board the Northern Belle celebrating our 10th Wedding Anniversary. The staff were fantastic, the food was outstanding and the carriage was comfortable and beautifully kept. We would very much like to ride on the train again in the near future. Thank you for making our celebration so special.

      Totally amazing!!
I have just travelled on the northern belle boarding at Manchester Victoria and travelling around Lancashire and Yorkshire. This was a 60th birthday treat for myself. My mum and I had the most fantastic time. The train is gorgeous ,very plush, food amazing and the staff were superb and very attentive. The only criticism I would make is that the pre travel information you receive via email does not contain enough detail. We thought the train route finished at Brighouse however when you get on board you are given a map of the journey which stretches over the 6 hours. I was also getting concerned as the tickets only arrived two days before the trip. It is a wonderful experience though and I will have many happy memories of the day.

      Steam Special - 60th Celebration
My husband booked the Northern Belle to celebrate my 60th birthday. We boarded at Liverpool Lime Street for our onward journey to Carlisle (Settle & Carlisle Steam Special). From the moment we were greeted by staff at the door to our carriage for the day (Glamis), a birthday card was waiting on the table from the Glamis staff (Debbie, Asim & Jo), our table was beautifully ‘dressed’, the food was perfectly cooked & presented until we arrived back at Liverpool, the day couldn’t have been more perfect. Nothing was too much trouble & we would like our thanks to be passed on to Debbie, Asim, Jo & to the chef & team for making my 60th celebration a truly memorable & unforgetable day.

Great day out I suspect…not so good if you try to talk to reservations to sort a problem
WAS really looking forward to my surprise after a superb 'cloak and dagger' effort from the good wife next weekend only to find a train issue means our particular carriage was cancelled. Horrendous customer service experience with no real apology (things break which is fine and acceptable ) but then to discover that even with no tickets being distributed yet (which if they had we'd have understood) they have decided the fate of the unfortunate few by carriage and NOT on a first come first served basis? We booked last August and this seemed to hold no weight whatsoever. (They wouldnt even call us, apparently the reservations manger was too ill to talk!) The unfair process of 'elimination' and the loss of faith in what looks like a superb experience means we wont be booking again..they even tried to say that all passengers booked at same time as us which we know to be totally untrue! Terrible form Northern Belle..

      Fabulous day trip to Carlisle
Boarded the Northern Belle at Wakefield for a full days outing to Carlyle and what a fabulous experience it was from start to finish. The food and service were first class, we were in the Chatsworth carriage and our stewards Barry and Zayna looked after us impeccably with enthusiasm, grace and humour. The cost of the trip may seem expensive but when a full 12 hours experience is factored in with a 3 course brunch, 6 course dinner, champagne, wine and port included along with a magician, a band and the luxurious experience, it all makes for a wonderful memory. Can highly recommend.

      Travel in style
Special birthday treat for my husband we went to The Cheltenham Gold Cup on the Northern Belle. It really is luxury travel and we were looked after extremely well by the staff always with a smile and nothing was too much travel. My husband was chuffed to receive a birthday card from them as well which was a lovely touch. The food is second to none and the tartlet “Arnold Bennett” was delicious melted in the mouth thank you chef. The ongoing travel into Cheltenham race course was well orchestrated and the volunteers on the steam train and at the station also looked after us very well. The five course dinner on our journey back was just a delight I particularly enjoyed the shin suet pudding and the beef. I wanted my husband to enjoy his day and he loved every minute of the experience and hasn’t stopped talking about it. So huge thank you to all but especially to the staff of our replacement carriage who made the vintage carriage look so beautiful and made sure we didn’t feel we had missed out.

      The best experience EVER
What an unforgettable and amazing experience for my birthday! Genuinely one of the best things I’ve ever done. From start to finish the day was PERFECT! The most wonderful staff, fantastic food, entertainment, everything just stunningly beautiful. Anyone considering doing a trip, DO IT! It’s a must! We had the spirit of travel luncheon and upgraded to a couples table and Laurent Perrier package, it was worth every single penny. We will definitely be back to do another one!

      Exemplary Service
We were greeted by the most friendly and amazing smile, from the moment we got on board, the staff went above and beyond to ensure our comfort and satisfaction, the welcoming atmosphere and attentive staff made the day very pleasant. The menu offered a delightful array of dishes, each expertly crafted with fresh, high-quality ingredients. Every bite was a culinary delight. My dining experience was truly exceptional. and I can’t wait to return. The luxurious train, coupled with exceptional service, made our day truly memorable Highly recommended!

      Special
This is the second time I’ve done the Christmas Lunch trip with different family members. It’s definitely an event. The train is full of character and comfort with festive decorations added to suit the season. The tableware & settings exude luxury & the food is excellent especially considering it’s all cooked on a train. The courses are served at well paced intervals throughout the journey; wine, and port with the cheese course, is included, & there’s also an excellent drinks menu available should you want extra (which we did) enjoying cocktails and liqueurs. Strolling musicians visit each table twice during the journey adding to the holiday vibe and a magician visits too. Staff are helpful, friendly & efficient & look the part in their liveried uniforms. On this trip from Liverpool we travelled the Welsh coast which gave interesting views as we travelled, chatted, ate & drank & enjoyed a thoroughly special & fabulous day out in utter comfort.

      A thoroughly enjoyable experience
The Christmas Festive Lunch journey from Liverpool to Holyhead was great. We were in the Glamis carriage and the decor was lovely. The food was delicious and the porn star martini was very good. We were serenaded by songs and there was also a magician going from table to table. A thoroughly enjoyable experience

      Thankful that we had Del.
I was very thankful that we had Del in our carriage who was very helpful. As we no longer spring chickens. He kindly helped us out of and back into the carriage. A big thankyou. I hope the managers will thank him from us. Someone who is that willing and helpful should be utilised to the fullest extent. Great team member

      York to Carlisle
We had a lovely magical, historical day experiencing a time of bygone era. It was quite breathtaking to arrive in York, walk over the footbridge and see the numerous old carriages and be greeted by a guard/steward at each one. These individuals gave a fabulous safety briefing and it was reassuring to see how many were available. We were soon seated and as the train rolled out the station the full Silver service began for breakfast. It was great to see (as always) people that have made a career of being exceptional at their trade. Amazing views as you head along the track towards settle and then onto Carlisle. Carlisle was nothing spectacular, but then again we were only there briefly. Coming back, service was good but no where near the standards of the morning. This was August and a very hot day, obviously due to the age of the carriages there was little ventilation, other than the tiny windows at the top. This is not a moan and is to be expected. What is a moan and what reduced this from being 5 stars was the following. 1. On such a hot day, water appeared to be limited in being handed out and was charged for at an extortionate price. 2. The champagne we had pre ordered was not chilled, they did not have any extra champagne and the white wine was no it chilled. 3. Having the lady steward walk through the carriage after dinner and bellow, ‘we accept tips and like cash’, which was all a little vulgar. 4. The return leg, staff seemed to disappear, totally different experience to the morning and felt unsafe.

      Great day out..At a price!!
We went on the Steam hauled tour including the settle to Carlisle line on 28th October 2023. The train is luxuriously appointed and the staff very attentive. The food is good but not outstanding, at the level of a posh wedding. There were quite long gaps between courses, which we liked, but might not be to everybody's taste. Plentiful hot drinks and bottled water on offer plus Mimosa with brunch, Champagne with canapes, bottle of wine per couple and a glass of port with the cheese. After dinner the trip began to drag on a little. Recommend do the long day in the summer and consider a cheaper shorter trip in the winter. Not sure that the quality of food on offer entirely justified the price

      Transport of Delight
Went on a circuit of Cumbria on 23rd September. Was originally meant to include a return leg through the Dales on the Settle-Carlisle line, but had to be changed due to engineering works on the line. For us, the alternative route down the coast was even better and so we were very happy with the change. Throughout the whole journey the attentive staff were outstanding and the food and drink to genuine fine dining standard. The carriage was beautifully presented. Yes, it is expensive, but you don't mind if the experience exceeds all expectations as this one did. Strongly recommended.

Just returned from today's Valentine Lunch. It was ok but no where near worth the £250 per head paid.

We joined the train at Manchester. The instructions ask you to arrive 20 minutes before departure time which of course we did. Unfortunatly, the train was running half an hour late which meant we spent almost an hour in the freezing cold on Manchester station. There are no Northern Belle staff on the station and no arrangements made for you to use the first class lounge....the minimum you would expect when spending this money.

We boarded the train at 14:45. No acknowledgement or apology for the late arrival.

The carriages are beautiful, but quite cold. Several passengers asked for the heating to be turned up but to no avail.

The food was good, but service painfully slow. Remeber this was a lunch trip...we got our main course 3 hours after boarding at 16:45. After that, cheese and desserts were rushed as the train arrived back in Manchester just before 18:00. The petit fours on the menu were not served or offered.

Despite the journey starting half an hour late, the route was curtailed, so that we still arrived at Manchester before the scheduled arrival time.

Overall we were expecting first class service, this was very average.

Dear trotter1964, I am sincerely sorry that we did not meet or exceed your expectations; we never like to disappoint our guests. The weather conditions on this day were difficult with the tail end of storm Dennis causing flooding and problems across the Network. This affected the timings and route of the train which in turn had a knock on effect on the service. We are sorry that this detracted from your day. Please feel free to contact me directly through our Travel Centre so we may discuss your feedback in more detail. Best wishes, Jeanette

My wife and I today (4th September 2021) took my aunt on the Northern Belle (Cardiff to Pembrokeshire) for her 90th Birthday.

Just to begin with the positives, all of the staff (including the musicians and magician) were fantastic, very attentive and I could not fault them at all. The food was excellent and the train’s décor was perfect – just as described. Unfortunately, this is where the positives of the trip end.

The train was scheduled to leave Cardiff at 1.15 p.m., travel to Fishguard and then get back to Cardiff at 6. 45 p.m. (5.5 hour trip). Living in Swansea and working in Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire I know how stunning the scenery is. However, the itinerary was actually, as follows:

1.15 p.m. – told that the train would be delayed and to come back at 2 p.m. (there was no where we could go, as my aunty has limited mobility so it was a case of waiting on the platform).
2.00 p.m. – told the train would be in at 2.18 p.m. (and then there was a last minute change of platform which was again difficult for my aunty due to her limited mobility).
2.18 p.m. – the train arrived, and then sat at Cardiff station for approximately 30 minutes.
2.58 p.m. – rather than travelling to Pembrokeshire the train started travelling backwards towards Newport. We asked staff on board what was happening but none of them seemed to know. The train ended up going up to Gloucester then Bristol before returning towards Cardiff.
4.50 p.m. approximately – the train arrived in Newport then stopped for an hour and a half (until 6.20 p.m.) at the station.
6.20 p.m. – the train left Newport station.
6.40 p.m. – we returned back to Cardiff station where we disembarked.

This was no where near what was advertised. It was explained to us that the engine had trouble that had taken longer than expected to be fixed and this had affected the schedule. We completely understand this and appreciate it was beyond the crews control; but the alternative that was offered was not comparable at all. The journey did not go anywhere near the advertised destination. Rather than a five and a half hour trip we were on board for four hours twenty minutes and 2 hours of this was stopped at Cardiff and Newport stations.

I know the issues we faced were likely to be a one off, and other reviews are much more positive. I think that if we had not encountered the problems that we did I would be giving it a 5 star review, so although I would be tempted to try it again, I would have to think carefully about spending that amount of money on the trip.

Appalling service. Had our first journey in 2020 was cancelled as the train pulled into Liverpool lime street, our carriage had unfortunately had a power cut overnight so we couldn’t travel. Other passengers in other carriages could, but not the two carriages effected.

We booked again to go to Bath in May, but due to covid restrictions this trip did not go ahead. We didn’t receive any notification regarding this, we contacted Northern Belle to switch our journey to June 8th ourselves.

Apparently this has now also been cancelled, the supposed email telling us this never arrived, funnily enough the message on the answer machine message didn’t register either. The only other trip to Bath on June 5th is now full, even though bookings are still being taken.

Be prepared to pay a fair amount of money to have your expectations dashed on numerous occasions and not travel anywhere.

My sister and I arrived at Liverpool lime street yesterday morning, 8th August 2020, with plenty of time to spare and waited for the train to Edinburgh to arrive.

Someone got off the train and started to shout something to the people gathered. It was difficult to hear what was being said over the noise of other trains and commuters.

Apparently there had been a power failure the night before in the first two carriages. If this is true, why had no one tried to make contact via email or phone to warn all the passengers in the two carriages effected before traveling to the station?

I felt we were brushed off with very little information as the rest of the passengers were shown to their seats so the train could leave on time

We were told by someone standing on the station concourse working for Northern Belle to ‘get an email in quickly to the company’

I particularly liked the questionnaire that was emailed through this afternoon asking if we could complete it about our recent trip. Somewhat difficult to fill in as we didn’t actually go anywhere

Would I recommend this company? Certainly not at the moment.

I look forward to hearing back from the company with information about what happens next

Arranged the Pembrokeshire lunch on Sept 4th for my friend's 80th birthday.
The train was one hour fifteen minutes late so it was 2pm when we got picked up at Newport. We travelled to Cardiff to pick up and sat in that station for half an hour or so. Those in my carriage wondered why we started travelling in the wrong direction ...I note from another review that an announcement was made, I did not hear it.
We travelled (at speed) to Gloucester, Yate and Bristol. We arrived back in Newport at 16:50 (not due back till 19:20 according to itinerary) and we hadn't even had our main course ! We stayed parked up in Newport for an hour and a half during which time we had main course, cheese board and dessert. Our view was part of a building site or toilets if we looked towards the other side of the carriage. Not exactly dining while travelling through rolling countryside.
We set off to drop people at Cardiff and stayed there for yet another hour!
We spent more time parked in stations than we did travelling and for this I paid £600 for myself and my friend. The day was completely ruined and although I have e.mailed Northern Belle I have not received a reply as yet.
I have to say though, the carriage staff were amazing.

We booked a trip on the northern belle from Norwich to chatsworth house costing over £1600, northern belle changed the date of the trip after we had paid in full from the weekend to mid week, which we are unable to do. We have since sent over 6 emails and left messages but no one had acknowledged our communications. Customer service is non existent, looks like we will have to seek legal advice to get our money back

This was our second trip on the Belle, both for Christmas lunches. This time we had booked to go with another couple but with Covid restrictions, we wondered if the experience would be diminished. It absolutely wasn't! Ther service and dining was as excellent and wonderful as we had hoped for! It really is a step back in time to the Golden Age of Travel! We had Barry and Lauren looking after us and they couldn't have done any more for us. The trip duration was about 5.5hrs and our only regret was that it didn't go on for longer!! We travelled from Chester this time and Manchester last year and both stations were well briefed and prepared for passengers for the train. The bonus was that Gary Barlow was in our carriage with his Mum!

Arrived at Preston in plenty of time, eventually saw the company rep. and got booked in, when the train arrived late it was an ominous sign ( more later ), the stewards quickly put out the carriage mats, and we boarded, were given our welcome drinks and staff introductions. Brunch was duly served, then things were showing cracks, decaf coffee granules and even black it was warm at best. The plates were still marked VSOE, although being no longer owned by VSOE. We made it to Carlisle getting even later, we were supposed to be there for 3 minutes, after 40 minutes with no information we moved off almost 1 hour late, despite this we made up some time by diverting through Haymarket, rather than go round the outskirts of Edinburgh.

The return journey was uneventful, running if anything a bit early. The ‘Exclusive Northern Belle Ale ‘ is overpriced Gravy Train Ale (I assume the extra charge is for the name ) . All in all a good day out. Will not be doing it again

This is my email to Northern Belle still awaiting a reply with 3 days to go....

It is with great disappointment, sadness, anger & frustration that I am writing this email.

As a Present for both myself and my partner who celebrated our 60th Birthdays in January of this year, our daughter Olivia saved up and bought us a lifetime experience on-board the Northern Belle Culzean Castle on 5th August 2023.

We were so thrilled with this present and booked the train to Edinburgh at a cost of £82 and an accommodation costing us £750 as these are normal rates for Edinburgh during the month of August. We bought new outfits and were on a countdown for our special trip.

Having not received the tickets Olivia contacted Northern Belle by email on Monday 31st July to enquire about these and the travel journal, to which she got a reply saying she would get the tickets & journal within the next 24 hours.

So imagine how distraught we were when Olivia informed us yesterday Tuesday 1st August that the train has been cancelled, and to add insult to injury the email stated:-

“We hope that you are looking forward to joining us on this unforgettable journey on board our most wonderful vintage train.

It is with regret we must advise you that our journey on Saturday 5th August will not go ahead”

Firstly, I cannot believe that this trip has been cancelled at such short notice. I am absolutely furious that the months of planning and excitement for the trip have been taken away from us 4 days before we are due to go. Also the fact that Olivia is upset as she bought the trip for us.

I would ask you to provide a reply for each of the points below:-

Why was this cancelled at such short notice
Why have we only been offered 50% off for the 8th October excursion
What compensation are you going to provide with respect to us booking accommodation and train travel which cannot be changed at such short notice

I am disgusted that a company of your stature and reputation can cancel an excursion which cost £1080.00 four days prior to the event.

I look forward to your comments and immediate reply

    Regards

    Carol
