- W2094RUlisah0 contributionsA once in a life-time experience of Stonehenge and the Neolithic landscapeI toured Stonehenge, Avebury, and other neolithic sites in a solo, all-day tour with Thomas Lyons of Archaeologist Guided Tours. Tom was extraordinarily knowledgeable and arranged visits to every site I wanted to see. He was also very personable and the trip was comfortable. I am an avocational archaeologist, and the last thing I wanted was a large bus tour that was crowded, low on content, and short on time at each site. I wanted to immerse myself in a once in a life-time learning experience. Tom made my tour everything I had hoped it would be. In addition, Dr. Edward Shepard recommended books for me to read in advance that helped me see the Neolithic in England in an entirely different light. I told UK friends about the terrific tour Archaeologist Guided Tours provided, and will be sharing it with my archaeology club back home in the hope that they too will have the opportunity to visit Stonehenge and the Neolithic landscape with Dr. Shepard and Thomas Lyons.Written 22 September 2024
- Greg S0 contributionsHighly RecommendedI rarely write reviews but felt compelled to do one for this trip. This is an excellent tour. Our guide, Edward, was well versed in the history of the sites and is passionate about it as well. Always a bit unsure about what type of guide you get on these but he is top-notch and made the trip fun and interesting throughout the day. (Though he would not confirm what everybody knows, it was all built by aliens😀😀😀). Sorry Edward, I had to get one last alien joke in. The vehicle was roomy and comfortable and made for a pleasant trip as it is a full day of activities. We had plenty of time at each site and never felt rushed. For me, this was the highlight of our two weeks in London and Ireland.Written 20 September 2024
- Global6010370 contributionsThe only way to visit Stonehenge!Visiting Neolithic sites with Edward, who not only has deep knowledge but also remains curious about the field and passionate about sharing it with others, made for a fantastic day! All of us, including our 15 year old, loved tramping across the countryside with him as he brought the landscape to life, teaching us how to read each stone and mound of earth for their archaeological significance. Dr. Edward Shepherd of Archaeologist Guided Tours is a warm and interesting guide and is the only person to book with if you are looking for a splendid experience.Written 10 July 2024
- scoldshap0 contributionsMagic of Stonehenge! We walked into Stonehenge from teh visitor center which was absolutely magical. Dr. Edward Shepherd has such a deep understanding of the place. He has done archaeological investigations there and is up to date on all of the latest findings. He shares information in a way that makes it easily understandable. I am very interested in prehistoric British history and we also went to the Salisbury museum. It was an absolutely perfect day and was so inspiring. I will definitely go again with Edward because his knowledge is so extensive.Written 3 April 2024
- halinas2230 contributionsWhat would you like to know about stonehenge? The tour to Stonehenge and Avebury with Edward was the best day of our holiday. We met up with him at the stonehenge visitors centre as we were already in the area. We then walked through nature and through time. He answered so many of our questions, it was very very interesting. We are back home now and this is the day we still talk about. Besides a very knowledgeable person, Edward is a very pleasant guide and easy to connect with. We hope to tour with him again in the near future.Written 23 February 2024
- beybladei0 contributionsUnbeatable experienceWe feel so lucky to have found Edward of Archaeologist Guided Tours through a simple google search. I am interested in archaeology while my husband has zero interest, and miraculously Edward managed to keep us both captivated for the entire day. Seeing Stonehenge and the related sites was cool, but having Edward’s perspective and explanations made it simply amazing. He is not only full of information (and he knows exactly how much to give - not info overload unless you want it, in which case he can answer any questions you have) but he is a nice and hilarious guy. It felt like going to Stonehenge with your best (and funniest) friend! I can’t recommend this tour more highly.Written 16 February 2024
- deverainbrooklyn0 contributionsPrehistory of England at its best with Archeologist Guided Tours of LondonStonehenge is a bucket list site, but my friend Gladys, who has a degree in English history, and I wanted more than to "see" it. We struck gold when Gladys found Edward Shepherd with Archeologist Guided Tours of London. Although Gladys' knowledge of history was way above mine, Edward was able to bridge our knowledge gap perfectly! Edward picked us up at our hotel (in a very comfortable car with a driver) and proceeded to enthrall us with English prehistory. By the time we arrived in Stonehenge, we had the background to understand what Stonehenge and the people who built it were all about. We also explored the West Kennet Long Barrow and Avebury. To explore these ancient prehistory locations with an experienced archeologist (who has himself done digs on such locations) as personable, warm, and brilliant as Edward made this day, complete with a perfect pub lunch, the most fascinating day of our 11 day London (and environs) trip.Written 5 January 2024
- V8738THsamuelk0 contributions10/10 Must do.Utterly brilliant. Dr Shepherd was unbelievably knowledgable about all things Bronze Age, Stone Age and Iron Age. Couldn’t have asked for a better day out.Written 30 December 2023
- ADRMaster0 contributionsThe Best Possible Way to Visit Woodhenge, Stonehenge and Avebury -- in the Company of Dr. Edward ShepherdMy wife, daughter and I met Dr. Edward Shepherd at Woodhenge at 10 am. After time at Woodhenge, Edward joined us in our car, and we visited Stonehenge, West Kennet Long Barrow, Silbury Hill, and Avebury. We dropped Edward off near Woodhenge at 4:30 on our way back to our hotel near Bournemouth. Our 6.5 hours with Edward gave us a superb overview of a set of fascinating sites. He is a committed student of the history and archeology of the area, with a treasure trove of relevant information about each site and their relationship to each other. He is particularly good at articulating the evidence supporting various theories about the construction and purposes of the artifacts at each site, careful to highlight what's actually known based on evidence and what's at best informed speculation. He was, for example, able to put each site into the broader context of the transitions of the inhabitants of the area (and those who came to the area from what is now France and elsewhere) from hunter gatherers to farmers, as well as what's known about what happened during the advent of the bronze age. We couldn't have asked for a more interesting and enjoyable experience.Written 3 May 2023
- scoldshap0 contributionsGo deep with ancient British History! Outstanding!Stonehenge, Wayland's Smithy, Uffington Horse, ancient British history! We spent two fantastic days with Tom, a professional archaeologist. I wanted a private special tour of ancient British history. Tom was so prepared and knowledgeable. And he was wonderful to travel with. The way we explored Stonehenge was amazing. We spent time in the afternoon in the other Stonehenge landscape, learning about the entire area. Then we visited Stonehenge with Tom at 6:45 pm and it was like we had it all to ourselves. He knew all the ways to make it special. I was reluctant to get too excited about Stonehenge due to the crowds but it was magical!! Two of the best days of my life as a passionate ancient British history student. Highly recommend!Written 31 July 2022
- N4719WLlynnf0 contributionsFabulous experienceRecent discoveries make the henges and barrows fascinating. Tom was terrific. We peppered him with questions continuously and he never tired. He was happy to field questions on mythology, economics, craft, religion, government, and contemporary cultures, in addition to the sites and their archaeology. There were 6 of us with all our luggage, so Tom arranged for a driver and mini-bus. They were terrific about custom logistics (pickup in London, dropoff in Bath). I would highly recommend making this a part of your trip.Written 27 May 2022
- LarsE88880 contributionsFabulous Tour for the Neolithic-MindedWe had an absolutely outstanding tour with Tom, starting with a very comfortable tour bus ride from London (about 2 hours) including a very entertaining and informative introduction to Neolithic and early Bronze Age structures complete with many amusing anecdotes during the ride as well as some stories about the lives of archaeologists, both recent and ancient. The tours of Stonehenge, the Salisbury Cathedral and the Avebury henge provided some great insights and the several stops at shops and pubs broke up the day so that it was not too tiring. Nothing but good things to say. Have fun!Written 2 December 2019
- Chitownadventurer0 contributionsDay tour of Stonehenge, Salisbury, AveburyWhat an awesome day! It started with Thomas, our guide, picking us up at our hotel. We then drove to Stonehenge. On the way, Thomas educated us about the history and other amazing information about Stonehenge, the surrounding countryside, and other amazing archeological information. Once we arrived in Stonehenge, he took us around the ruins, educating us along the way. The next stop was Salisbury, where we visited the magnificent cathedral containing a copy of the Magna Carta. We then took a stroll the medieval city of Salisbury followed by eating “Sunday Roast” at a local restaurant. We then traveled to Avebury, where Thomas again shared his in depth knowledge about the circular stone structures located there. We ended the visit with a warm up at the local pub. We were then transported home with wonderful memories to share with family and friends. Overall, this was an amazing and enjoyable day filled with fun, education and awe. I highly recommend this trip.Written 1 December 2019
- nca3500 contributionsa definite must dowhere to begin... this tour was amazing and made doubly so by our wonderful guide Edward. such an easy pick up /drop off opposite the Natural history museum , a driver so Edward could focus on the tour. no earphones or huge groups for us .. Edward told us so much more than your average Stonehenge history and no question from the group fazed him. ending the day at Avebury and being able to walk through the stones at sunset was a real highlight. the day was suitably ended with a drink at the only pub inside a henge and more chatting. 5 stars doesn't seem enough :) a special thanks to Edward who gave us great info on places to visit in Florence that weren't traditional tourist spots, we did them all and loved it .Written 17 November 2019
- kouri c0 contributionsFelt bad for the people who weren't on our tour! This was probably my most talked about tour from my two weeks in the UK, and believe me, I took a lot of tours. Edward is a walking, talking encyclopedia of information. Like I mentioned in my headline, when we got to Stonehenge, I saw all of these other tour groups walking around with their sad little earphones on. Not us. We had an actual archaeologist walking us through our tour, talking about the latest information, etc. It was fascinating. We visited a 5300 year old burial mound which again Edward was able to discuss in great detail. No type or amount of questions stumped him. I have wanted to see Stonehenge my whole life and I'm very glad I chose this tour to do it. Other tours are probably ok, functional, etc, but they will fall far short of this one. The whole experience was great and we even had a driver so Edward could focus on talking with us during the transit times. If you want a cursory look at Stonehenge, Bath, Avebury, etc, just to "check the box" so to speak, then this is not your tour. But, if you want to really learn some things I promise you didn't know before, this is the only tour you should consider.Written 19 October 2019
