He was extremely knowledgeable the whole trip and we learned so much. You really felt taken care of. We stopped for coffee and a snack and then lunch. It was delicious. - Clive23910 contributionsWonderful Dales even in chilly and damp JanuaryThis Dales tour is superb and well recommended. Highlights for me included Grassington and Wensleydale but best of all was the commentary from our guide John who ensured we all enjoyed our day out. Despite rather gloomy and damp January weather we had a fabulous time and you won’t be disappointed if you go as well!Written 20 January 2025
- FarAway441269023380 contributionsA Memorable Tour ExperienceMy family and I booked this tour as a way to experience and learn more about the Yorkshire Dales. Our tour guide, Barry, was a great delight to be around! He was filled to the brim with so much knowledge about topics ranging from the trees in the forests to the timeless architectures to the famous tv shows filmed in the areas we visited. He gave us so much insight about these various topics while creating a happy atmosphere for everyone to enjoy in, and our tour was made more special by his presence. It was such a pleasure to witness the undulating hills of the countryside, the old ruined castles, ethereal waterfalls, the Wensleydale creamery, and the quaint villages with rich history. All in all, this was truly a wonderful experience!Written 19 January 2025

It was an amazing experience. Our guide John was informative, friendly and welcoming. Nothing was too much and we learnt some many interesting facts about Yorkshire. We absolutely love it and will be using Mountain Goat Tours again. :)Written 9 January 2025

- caithlinj20230 contributionsThe best Yorkshire dales adventureJohn S was an excellent, knowledgeable host with many interesting stories about the area. He was very kind with a wry sense of humour. We loved the All Creatures Great and Small trivia and Grassington was a real highlight. We would recommend more time at Bolton Castle over the Falls but appreciate that the Castle was closed so perhaps makes sense for a shorter visit. We would recommend generally that under 10s shouldn’t be on the trip.Written 30 December 2024
- rajrajeshwarir0 contributionsBest Yorkshire dales experienceThoroughly enjoyed the Yorkshire Dales trip with the Mountain Goats team! Perfect to sit back, relax, enjoy and LEARN! Loved the way the tour was curated to suit the weather (Pea soup weather!) Skilful navigating of narrow Yorkshire dales roads whilst sharing carefully curated information by Barry. Enjoyed the quiz towards the end - Won an award for most right answers! Thanks Barry :) All in all best experience to end the year with! Big Special mention to Jackie for her very warm and lovely company!! Best regards, RJWritten 28 December 2024
- Discover602933921930 contributionsLovely and wholesome tour with John S.We had lovely tour of the Dale's with John S today. John has very deep knowledge of the Dales history. He shared so much information and fun tidbits that made our day. We covered almost all of the important points and he also took us to a lovely inn for lunch. Inspite of misty weather he ensured we made the most of our trip. We would love to come back for more tours with him. Thank you John and keep doing the awesome work.Written 27 December 2024

- 371corinnep0 contributionsGorgeous Yorkshire DalesI did two tours within 3 days and this tour was the second. I got the same tour guide John. He was delightful once again. The Yorkshire Dales was beautiful and delightful. Saw some cute market towns, an abbey and the visit to Wensley Dale Creamery was heavenly. Got to try some lovely cheese wish I could have taken it home with me. Dales are definitely beautiful part if the country.Written 22 December 2024
- 479miquelm0 contributionsLovely day in the DalesMe and my partner went on the tour yesterday and we absolutely recommend it! Our guide John was lovely, incredibly helpful and entertaining, he gave us an outstanding experience in the Dales. The weather was not amazing, cloudy and quite windy, but it gave the landscape an unforgetable, mystical vibe. Also worth mentioning the visit to the Wensleydale Creamery, quite a fun experience to treat yourself with some local cheese. We will definitely come back to this amazing area!!!Written 17 December 2024
- KaiFl0 contributionsIf you’re a fan-don’t miss this tour.We were the only 2 signed up for that day and our wonderful driver John gave us a private tour. From our experiences, other companies would have asked us to change our tour day. Riding up into the dales along the narrow roads I imagined James driving to remote farms. We had time to stroll through Grassington where the pub scenes are filmed, visited the church used for the wedding,Jame’s house, drove past the filming location of Helene’s farm… John was a wonderful source of local history and life in the area.Written 3 December 2024

Wonderful day spent with Ben, our bus driver and guide. The weather was foggy and wet, however Ben did his best to provide us entertainment and value while looking for interesting stops thru the thick fog.
Stunning scenery up to Goatland once the fog had cleared, steam train to Whitby, ending with more beautiful views for our return trip to York. Ben was very informative, money well spent! We would do this tour again.

Highly recommend this tour! Byland Abbey was one of my favourite sights ever, you only have about 15-20min here so make the most of it as the place is quite large and could easily take twice the time. Whitby Abbey (additional cost) is also a must-do while you're there (the driver will give you the option to get out at the tourist information centre near the harbour or drop you off at the abbey to save climbing up the 199 steps). Take a quick peek at the free Whitby jet museum in the old town, and admire the replica Captain Cook ship. There is a quick stop at Goathland to admire the station (Hogsmeade and steam trains, a quick stop at Pickering (be sure to visit the church with famous medieval artwork!), and a quick stop at Helmsley (less to do here - I took a stroll around the church and along the creek). We also had a few quick photostops which were well chosen. A beautiful drive through the moors. Our guide gave commentary throughout most of the day, which was really interesting despite some issues with the audio system.

A wonderful day out with driver Trevor. Though the January weather was rather gloomy we all enjoyed our stop at the atmospheric Byland Abbey and a coffee break in the lovely Helmsley. Trevor kept us entertained as we progressed to the Moors and on to a 2 hour lunch stop in Whitby (which was fabulous) followed by the Harry Potter train station at Goathland. I can't speak highly enough about this tour and would recommend it to anyone.

Terrible day trip. We waiting in the pouring rain outside for our pick up. Van was full. People could not all sit next to their group. The speaker system on the bus was not utilized. It was intended for a separate tour guide and driver. So the microphone is on the opposite side of bus. So there are speakers at every seat but they do not work. So the guide/driver has a remote speaker and a microphone headset. He forgot to turn it on so the first 30 mins of commentary about the whole day was not heard in the back of the bus. He had to stop bus and turn it on after complaints. Lots of coughing the entire ride so pretty sure we are ALL going to be sick. Driver talked the entire time, every single second of the entire drive to and from. Driver/Guide kept forgetting to turn on A/C each time we got back on the bus so it was warm several times, including the long drive back.Weather was poor. We were unable to stop for photos of Moors. Had to change the route for weather. NO STEAM TRAIN. We were told they might not be running because of weather but weather had cleared and we saw 2 other STEAM trains running but NOT the one we were on. No time for lunch. First chance for food was 2pm. at Whitby. Our choice was see the Abbey there for 3 mins or push lunch further and then walk down 199 steps for later lunch. Not really enough time for lunch and Abbey. Abbey their should be a part of tour and should pre-pay for entry as part of ticket. Got back to London 30mins late. Over all a bust! Would not recommend. We have done probably 20 other day trips over the years.

Hi BMcC004
Thank you again for taking the time to share your feedback with us, your first review of this tour was seen and heard, but to reiterate again...
The comfort, safety, and enjoyment are our top priorities with our customers. We apologise for the issues with the bus seating, speaker system, and air conditioning. This is an undersandable complaint.
Regarding the coughing and your concerns about getting sick— we wish we could control the health of others but unfortunately, we can’t. That being said, we understand how frustrating it must have been. Again, we unfortunately, cannot control the weather as much as we wish we could.
As we understand it, you did actually go on a train to Whitby, it may just not have been the one you expected. We will work on clearer communication going forward.
In regards to the limited time for lunch and the Abbey visit, which we mentioned in your previous complaint, to keep prices down for those who may not wish to visit the abbery they are not inlcuded in the ticket price.
You are given two hours in Whitby which we feel is adequate for a lunch stop. Our drivers always reccomend you get a snack at your stop in Helmsley, which the driver did as your lunch is at 2pm.
Thanks again for letting us know that you were disappointed with this tour.
Kind regards
Mountain Goat

Our tour into the North York Moors & Whitby was led by John S. he was a brilliant driver/guide and had a wealth of knowledge that made the tour thoroughly enjoyable. After getting home and looking at the map, we couldn’t believe how many places in the moors we travelled to, we really felt we saw as much as we could. We had plenty of stops to take photos and explore different locations. The moors were beautiful, had a fun steam train ride from Grosmont to Whitby and a short but lovely time at Whitby - where we walked down the steps from the abbey, had fish and chips and bought some famous Whitby Jet. We felt we really got value for money and John was the highlight of the tour - well recommended to anyone!

What a great day! I can't praise our driver John enough for his great personality and depth of knowledge about all the areas we visited enroute to Whitby. The van was up to date and very comfortable. Each seat on our van had a charging port for both A and C type USB plugs! Each of our stops was very interesting, and John's running commentary was fun and informative. We highly recommend Mountain Goat Tours and John, in particular!

This was a fantastic tour and one of the most enjoyable parts of our trip. We got to see the hauntingly beautiful ruins of Byland Abbey, the heather in bloom on the moors, picturesque small towns/villages and the fascinating York countryside, and also had great fish and chips at Whitby.
Our driver/guide, John, was engaging and informative, and brought the history of York to life with the stories he told. We also found John's elocution to be clear and really easy to understand.
We did not greatly enjoy the steam train ride - the train crew did not announce that we were supposed to alight at one of the stations and board a different train, and we only learnt about it when a kind fellow passenger informed us of the situation. There were some delays in the steam train journey as the train made unexpected stops in the middle of nowhere. But we understand these aspects are not within Mountain Goats' control.
Additionally, we felt that the minibus was a bit of a squeeze though we're on the smaller side. But as John explained, a coach cannot fit on the winding roads, so this is understandable.

Wonderful experience! Very well organized tour. I really liked the fact that it is for a small group because it makes getting around easier and faster. Unforgettable places! John, our guide managed the day perfectly, told interesting anecdotes, never intrusive but at the same time very present and supportive.

We are SOOO glad that we took this tour whilst in York! We were visiting from Canada and originally had thought of scaling our time back but upon seeing photos of the North York Moors and environs, we just HAD to embark on this excursion. I must say that John, our guide, was the perfect historical narrator for all the places that we passed through... he had a very upbeat demeanour and made it entertaining and engaging for us. We greatly enjoyed the stop in the North Yorkshire Moors, which were just breath-taking. Walking around the ruins of Byland Abbey was also pretty incredible. So, if you ever plan to be in York for a few days, PLEASE do yourself a favour and book this coach tour in advance... and hope that John is your guide & driver!

I have joined tours dozens of times, and John is the best guide and driver I've experienced. He is full of knowledge, like touring with a history teacher :D. You can tell he truly loves his hometown because the vibes he delivers to guests are different (in a good way). His driving is smooth, his voice is pleasant, and he's always on time. He explains everything in detail from the beginning of the tour, including safety aspects in the vehicle (I've truly never heard this from any other driver or tour guide). Even at the end of the tour, he still has so much to share. Details like a quiz with prizes are really mind-blowing; I've never encountered a tour guide so serious about their job. This can only be done by someone who loves their work.
