- N8699PYpeterw00Amazing Walls around the cityFull of history and great walks around the city. So much to see along the way, you just have to do it.
- 0Pete_2300Walk the wallsThe walls do not now encircle the whole of York but there is still plenty of wall to walk. You don’t necessarily have to do it all in one go but it is worth trying to do the entire walk, especially as its free. From the wall you get good views of York and in certain locations there are boards explaining what you can see.
- Flyingboy5800Walls.The walk on the walls is great. There are a lot of the walls left and they have open access. It’s easy if you can walk reasonable. And it’s so cool that this still exists and they allow such freedom is seeing it.
- Roy58100Self Guided WalkIf you want to do this walk all at once you should be reasonably fit. There are places where there is no hand rails which could be a hazard. It gives you a view of all the different areas of the city and is worth doing if you have the time and energy.
- Galya A00Disappointed for missing half of itinerary stops and not staying on themeI really wanted to like this tour, especially because the guide seemed interesting and upbeat. Unfortunately, the reality didn't match my expectations. The tour barely touched on Viking history, and missed half of the proposed itinerary. I can't recommend this tour as it was off topic and didn’t feel like a good value for money. Despite being promised insights into York's rich Viking history, the tour ended up being incoherent, with hardly any Viking stories. Instead, I got a mix of random facts, mostly focusing on Romans and history as recent as Henry VIII. The tour missed the mark on its Viking theme. What disappointed me even more was that we didn't visit most of the places listed in the itinerary, such as the Jorvik Viking Center, Castle Museum, cliff tower, and the Viking-themed bar. Considering it was a private tour with just me and the guide, we were extremely mobile and missing all those stops confused me. I asked about the Jorvik center at the end, and the guide informed me it was already closed and I couldn’t visit even by myself. This information should have been communicated earlier so we could adjust the start time, begin the tour there, or at least notify me of potential closures beforehand. While I understand Viking history is based on folklore, titling a tour "Vikings" is misleading when the tour doesn't live up to that promise. The tour was exactly 1.5 hour long. Overall, it was a disappointing experience.
- Layla K00Great way to spend a couple of hoursGreat walk round York City walls. With exception of a couple of breaks in the wall it’s amazing to see how intact they are. We had a lovely day for it and it was well worth doing the entire walk. Great free experience and way to see a bit more of York on a crazy busy Saturday shopping day!!
- BostonJandP00Add some perspective to the CityA different way to view York. Surprisingly the wall goes about 1/2 way around the City and then you can follow the rest of the wall by walking along the streets. You can enter the wall for free and don't have to pay for a tour.
- lucybY9113FQ00AwesomeThis was something we were told 'we should do' and it didn't disappoint. We walked from Red Tower to Fishergate Postern Tower, I don't do heights so had been worried as I'd read some parts of the walls don't have a barrier along the wall, this part didn't, but it wasn't high enough to need it. It was a great way to see the city and all of us (2adults and 2 teens) enjoyed it. Glad we did it. At Fishergate, we then went into Witherspoon's for some food and a drink.
- 141jeng00A must when visiting York!A beautiful sunny Mknday morning, and we explored the walls. We walked all around and saw the stunning York from them. A must when visiting York!
- MissMercury_100No trip to York would be complete without doing this!No trip to York would be complete without having walked along some of the city's famous wall! It's very interesting to see the different views and historic original features. There are benches for you to stop and rest. Some sections of wall are higher than others. The highest section we went on had a railing to stop people falling off the edge but the lower sections don't have this. There was a section we walked on that had both sides complete. There are hand rails up the steps on the entrances to the wall, which are needed because they're steep. The walls aren't disabled or pushchair friendly but I'd definitely recommend walking on them if you're able to! A must-do!
- Laurie V00Think twice about this oneI booked the York Walls private tour weeks in advance. The tour guide did not show for the tour. Numerous attempts were made to call and email the week of the tour with no response from the tour guide. Viator’s response when I called was for them to also call and send another email. When they could not reach the tour guide, I was told to go at the time I included in my email then cancel if the tour guide does not show up. The refund process was cumbersome with the refund taking up to seven days.
- faye5700Well maintained extensive wallI like city walls. Even better if you don't have to scoot over when people are approaching. No railing, but the drop does not look fatal. Just a roll down the hill. There are 4 bars which elsewhere would be Gates, some towers and lookouts. You can enter or leave the walls at each bar. Views into different neighborhoods.
- royv64700Terrific that the walls still existThis morning we walked the York city walls. We walked the whole lot , took many photos, admired many places from the walls, great views of the Minster. Took us a leisurely 3 hours, it was pure pleasure to walk this ancient wall that protected the old city of York for generations. It must have been a lot of hard work and skill that saw it completed. Sure glad the move to demolished the wall years ago failed, well done to those that had the foresight to keep it, what a draw card it is now for the city. Loved our time on the wall.
- I4183OYjudithc00Yorks incredible historyHadnt done the walls walk for many many years, and I live in York great views of the city. Woud be nice to have more information points and history along the way.
- DavidS85200Nice views but no dogs allowedNice walk along the walls but real shame you can’t take dogs. Lots of ways up and down so can join for small sections. Good views across the city.

We scheduled a ghost tour of York with John at 7:00 pm on 29 April. I have the confirmation to verifying this. At approximately 4:45 I received an email telling me that the tour was now starting at 6:00 pm. We were unable to make that work because it conflicted with existing dinner reservations. I reached out to John via email. He did not respond. I called him. He did not answer. Finally the hotel concierge contacted him by phone. The concierge said “John was stubborn and unwilling to be helpful”.
To say the least my wife and I were very disappointed. I suggest that Trip Advisor drop him as a tour guide.

Neil, I am very concered to read this review particularly, as this is a complete pack of lies. Fortunately we have an email trail of all correspondance, and I will flag this with trip advisor today and have no issue resolving this with you, however I will not stand for false representation. As with all our tours we offer flexible starting times, Just to confirm - the tour was booked in and you were messaged on 3 separate occasions by our company to confirm a suggested start time, all of which were ignored by you. I finally messaged you on the day as we had other tours on and stated a start time of 6pm, again which was ignored. I only received a message from the concierge at the hotel, less than 45 minutes before the tour was due to start. I will also take this up with Brian the concierge as at no point was I stubborn and unwilling to be helpful. Quite the opposite- we even contacted you and asked about moving the tour to the next day. If you wish to book in a tour and then completely ignore all messages from us then there is very little we can do. The issue is that you decided, for your own reasons, to ignore all attempts to communicate with you. This is your prerogagive but to suggest otherwise is fraudulent and I will not stand for it. I will be reporting this issue to Trip Advisor and flag this review for removal.

From Ryan & Georgia,
Absolutely amazing tour around York, John made this experience the best it could be. We have been talking about the stories and the information we learned along the way. It was a brilliantly planned and fun journey. Would recommend this above all tours. If you love your swords and shields history please look into this.
Would more than happily plan to attend yet again. John is very friendly and very energetic. He went the extra mile to ensure our tour was creepy and informative.
Try this experience you won’t regret it.

Myself and my mum booked a private tour after seeing some poor reviews on the commercialised group tours. We were not disappointed - John was very knowledgeable and we learnt a lot about the history of York as well which was really interesting and informative. He has a laid back relaxed attitude which made the tour fun and he went the extra mile with the tour running over the 2 hours and then insisting he walked us back to our accomodation for safety. He is clearly passionate about the subject and I would definitely recommend his tour - we both really enjoyed it.

Fantastic tour with John. History based with links to various ghost stories. Clearly passionate about what he does and clearly knows his stuff, learnt so much and all done with a lighthearted easy manner. So glad we chose this rather than one of the theatrical tours! Thanks for a really enjoyable and educational couple of hours!!!

We were given a history of York that really helped set the scene straight away. Toured parts of the city you would never normally find and were told stories to make you shiver! I can’t recommend highly enough this superb experience! The highlight of a magical trip

My wife and I booked this tour based on Tripadvisor reviews. They were spot on. John is a very knowledgeable guide and his tour is expertly put together mixing the ghost stories into the history of York seamlessly. We thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend to any visitors of York.

In booking this ghost tour, we were hoping for something less like a sideshow and more like a factual description of York’s history and what could have contributed to paranormal experiences. Wow, John and his tour vastly exceeded our expectations! He was knowledgeable and entertaining and gave us a great history lesson. And more than that, security guards walked up and corroborated the story he was telling us — from their own experience!! Thanks John, we’ll be telling that story for years! Great value, great way to spend an evening in a beautiful and historic city.

THank you so much for your lovely review, and yes I can confirm the security team weren't actors planted there by me haha! York continues to be a very spooky place evidently, but it was a pleasure to spend the evening in your company!

Hands down the best private tour I have ever booked. We had such a great time walking around York with John learning about the history of this amazing town starting with the Ancient Romans. If you are planning a stay in York, do not miss the chance to take this tour.

Un fortunately I could not give a zero star rating. Let me start by saying that and that it was a private history tour and NOT a ghost tour. We were supposed to tour inside the dungeons, the minster and the shambles, and the only one we toured was the minster, outside. When I challenged the tour guide, John, he passed the buck back to Viator. You cannot get a refund, you cannot cancel and you cannot disagree and ask for your money back at anytime during the HISTORY tour. For some reason his child minder works until 9:15 at night, never known that to be true but as my children are now adults I cannot confirm that. The “Tour” cost £120 for my wife and I to take, and if I had know it was a history tour I would NOT have booked it. Once it is booked is the only time you get a phone number linked to the tour guide in order to confirm your tour and a meeting place and time. As stated earlier you cannot cancel at anytime or get a refund once you confirm the payment. I have phoned Viator in order to complain and to get a refund but that was to no avail. The tour guide John said that he would also back me up and get involved with my dispute, however, Viator will not confirm that he has. So I will message him and see if I get a reply.

Thank you for your feedback Terry, however it is a misrepresentation and deliberately deceptive. Firstly yes it is a historically themed tour (something we make very clear on our listings) however it is first and foremost a ghost tour. We had already visited 2 ghost sites (The ghost of Catherine Howard and the Monks of St Marys) before your first complaint (30 minutes into the tour), specifically that you 'had not experienced any psychic phenemona like we did when we checked into the Black Swan'. You also said you had zero interest in history, so we adjusted the tour accordingly, stopped talking about ghosts in any historical context, visited some alternative ghost sites and let you soak up the atmosphere. We could not have taken you to the 'dungeons' as there are no dungeons in York(!). We did visit all the other sites but at no point to we claim to take you inside as it is the evening - they are shut! We only missed out visiting the shambles through your choice - as it is a historic site and you were very clear you hate such places. We visited 10 different sites on the night and went through the ghosty activity at each one. Indeed, your wife claimed to have experienced some sensations at 3 places, for which you shouted at her loudly in the street that 'its just the wind you stupid bloody cow', which I have to say I found rather distasteful. I was brought up a way that I don't consider such language towards a lady the conduct of a gentleman. We completed the full 2 hours, by which time you were standing on your own, as far away from both me and your wife (who was thoroughly enjoying the tour), and as you'd decided to stand so far away from both of us it made engaging with you completely impossible. I'm sorry that you had issues with the tour but we are very satisfied that we listened to your feedback on the night, adjusted the tour for your needs and did over the 2 hours allotted. You clearly have anger management issues and your phone call a few moments ago threatening to put on a fake review unless we issue you with a full refund is, I'm afraid, going to fall on deaf ears. I don't react well to blackmail so I am happy to let the review stand. I'm very sorry you didn't personally experience any psychic phenomena on the tour, but this is no grounds for either a refund or the false review you have posted above. However, I would ask that you pass on my personal thanks to your wife who was lovely throughout, thanked me for the tour, and rather embarassingly for you apologised at the end for your appalling, juvenile behaviour.
