This tour had almost nothing to do with food - when we finally did get to the food market 45 minutes into the tour, we were told to just pick something that sounded good......what?! We expected a recommendation for a local delicacy and were just told that all of the food was

We are the only local tour operator which offer a local food & drink tasting experience tour combined with a sightseeing guided tour. As per my email sent to you before you left this unfair review...after discussing your complaint with your guide Peter about your food tour booking, we both agree that we think Peter delivered a tour as per the tour description advertised. The tour advert does mention that we will take you to cosmopolitan food stalls at the international food market run by locals who prepare food from around the world. It also mentions that we will show you Oxford's unique historic Covered Market. Our advertising does not suggest that we will enter any restaurants as we never do and none of the restaurants which we approached are willing to reserve a table for a typical two persons to have only a starter during their peak lunch time period. I appreciate that our sightseeing & food tasting tour may vary lots from such tours in Europe, where such tours are far more popular. This tour only gets booked very sporadically. If we frequently had eg 10 persons on food tours, perhaps we could then again approach restaurants to ask them to negotiate an arrangement but we don't, so we have not advertised the tour as such. I am sorry if the tour didn't meet your expectations and I do appreciate any feedback, as it's what allows us to correct mistakes if mistakes are made by guides or to get critical reviews of inexperienced guides. However, Peter is not an inexperienced guide. In fact, I am pretty sure that he gets more 5 star tripadvisor and getyourguide.com reviews than any other guide on any of Oxford's tours. He averages a 5 star review every day. So in summary, I am sorry that you didn't find the tour to your liking but we feel that we fulfilled the tour according to the description given. Peter did mention that he also did invite you to sample cheese from the local Oxford cheese company stall in the Covered Market. He says that you declined that invitation. Moos moos milk shake shop is definitely not something especially unique but it is one of the highest rated and most popular food and drink sellers in the city centre. Peter says that he offered you various options and that he did recommend some of the best places to eat in Oxford city centre during your stay here. Peter also asked me to point out that your complaint suggests that you did not receive 4 or 5 food or drink portions. However, this is not true, as he bought you Hungarian dish and a vegetarian spinach pie from the international food market and he did make recommendations of what are amongst his and his friends' favourites both here and in the Covered Market food stalls too but then naturally offered you the chance to choose which stalls at the international food market, you'd like to select two dishes from. At the historic Covered Market, he pointed out and offered to let you do tastings at our unique local choose shop called Oxford Cheese company which manufacture their own cheeses and sell a wide range of regional cheese from the UK that you will not find in nearly all delis. However, you declined that invitation to visit what is likely the most unique shop for locally produced foods. You did however go to the Italian style gelato shop and tried their bespoke ice cream and you opted to have a milk shake from Moos Moos, which is a local shop that is very popular locally. Finally, as you pointed out, he brought you some home made shortbread. So actually, you did sample 5 food or drinks from local food sellers (as per our advert). Admittely, we could not take you to Demi Johns local gin distillers as unfortunately Demi Johns shop just closed down. If my advertising still mentions DemiJohns, then I will need to correct it. That does however mean waiting for my webmaster to get round to editing DemiJohns out of the description of (possible) local places the tour might visit. You seem to have formed lots of impressions of what you expected the tour to be like which simply do not relate to our advertised description of the tour. Peter told me that he introduced Harry Potter anecdotes because your mother expressed an interest in this topic. Peter also mentions that despite the fact that you and your mother were the only customers and as such, Peter would have communicated that he can cater the tour around your interests, at no point on the tour, did you say something about your being more interested in X than Y, which you could have done so. Peter is a very capable and people orientated guide and seldom a day goes by on tripadvisor or on getyourguide that Peter fails to get another 5 star review. So we are rather surprised at your very negative review of his tour. You wrote that, 'when we finally did get to the food market 45 minutes into the tour', which is an odd comment, because Peter confirmed that as any sensible guide would do on a food tour, the very first thing he asked you when you met him at 12.00 to start the tour, was to ask if you were hungry enough yet to start the tour by going to the international food market. He says that you told him that you weren't very hungry yet and so he offered to first show & tell you about sightseeing spots. My view and your guide's view is that you never seemed to have appreciated that this tour is advertised as 'Oxford Food Tasting & Sightseeing Tour'. You seem to have presumed for reasons unclear why, that our tour would visit restaurants and that it would not introduce much Oxford sightseeing info. We received £95 from you for 2 persons for a 2 and half hour private tour which included food and drink tastings from local businesses. We feel that we delivered the advertised tour experience and we're annoyed that you have seen fit to leave us such a poor review. I recommend that next time you book a tour with a tour operator, you READ THE ADVERTISED TOUR DESCRIPTION. Sincerely, Alasdair
