About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- mimiruthie0 contributionsGreat tour of "The Inklings" spotsMy husband and I had a private tour with Peter in early May. He was a very knowledgable tour guide and took us all around Oxford showing us so many interesting places. We enjoyed several hours with him and felt like we saw much more than other tours would have showed us. We rode the train from Paddington Station and found our meeting place easily. The weather was cold and overcast but it only sprinkled lightly for a few minutes. We visited Exeter College & Magdalen College, walked along the Magdalen Water Walks, visited pubs, churches, the Covered Market and much more. It was well worth the price.Written 30 December 2024
- chrispN1188MP0 contributionsUnprofessional and waste of money.Extremely poor tour and customer service. No one met us at the tour start and when we called were told it would be an hour later starting (we only went for a day trip). The tour was then run by a lovely man but clearly had no knowledge of the the food tour and we ended up walking around the food markets relatively aimlessly with no context to any food or drink tasting. It was comically poor. When we complained, to who I presumed was the company director he was rude and dismissive and failed to grasp that the tour was not of a quality consistent with what we paid. The reasoning was that because we had had some food (which was random - dumplings and a pizza) that the tour had been delivered as advertised. Not only would I avoid this tour but also this company who came across as rude and unprofessional.Written 7 December 2024
- Voyage7270260 contributionsTake this tour if you want both Harry Potter and Oxford history! My wife and I were fortunate to have Sam as our guide. Sam was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly teaching us anything and everything about Oxford and the connections to Harry Potter.Written 18 October 2024
- CaroleP100 contributionsVery disappointed. After looking forward to this tour while on holiday from Adelaide, Australia we were very disappointed. Our guide was very vague at times, kept coughing and told us more about the history of Oxford than about Morse which is a very interesting topic of mine. He was often way ahead of us and as my husband was in a wheelchair it was difficult to keep up. Oxford was extremely busy that day but unless I specifically asked about Morse, Lewis and Endeavour he didn't really take us to enough places that I could recognise. It was after the tour ended that my niece who lives just outside Oxford took me to the pub where Morse and Lewis often had a beer and it had a photograph of them on the wall. All in all I did not think it was worth the money!Written 11 October 2024
- K6425OFcharlottet0 contributionsExcellent tour and very thoughtful tour guide. This was a private tour (4 adults) with Flora. We can't give any higher praise than to say that Flora is one of the best tour guides we have had. She was engaged with the topic and answered our questions completely. We received more from this tour than we anticipated. If she did not have an answer to our questions, she said so freely (which may have only happened once). We would highly recommend this tour and Flora.Written 2 October 2024

- chrissaah0 contributionsThanks Renata for a great Morse tour of Oxford!Renata did a wonderful job!! Not only did she give us so many Morse stories about the places we saw, but lots of extra history and features of the city. She also got us into one of the school courtyards! Thanks Renata for a great tour!Written 19 August 2024
- Daydream6314120 contributionsGreat experience on the Chronicles of Narnia sights when C.S. Lewis taught in Oxford. We appreciated our guide Tom accommodating us with a change in a shorter time we had to do the walking Inklings tour of Oxford. Tom’s knowledge of Tolkein & Lewis was very good. He worked well in pointing out sights that inspired stories, sermons and deep friendship with the Inklings. - ewoodsrobs0 contributionsThe Man makes the TourRay was absolutely lovely, very personable. At the start of the tour, he asked us what we were wanting to focus on most and did all he could to ensure he met that goal. He also enthusiastically shared about new things he was learning about individuals related to Oxford University. Ray did a wonderful job of enthusiastically telling us about Tolkien and Lewis and their respective stories. He also pointed out sites related to Alice in Wonderland, My Fair Lady, The Wind and The Willows, TS Elliot, Wycliffe, and Tyndale. We left inspired and full of wonder.Written 19 June 2024

Our guide, Joanna, was incredibly knowledgeable and shared fascinating facts, insights, and stories that made the tour truly authentic, inspiring, and fulfilling. I took the morning slot to start the day, get the first understanding about the city’s life, history, and culture, and keep the rest of the time to enhance this experience by strolling and visiting other places. I highly appreciate Joanna’s energy and passion for making the day in Oxford so special.Written 26 May 2024

Super enjoyable! My wife and I (senior citizens) came from CA with our young granddaughters (ages 10 and 15) for this, and we weren't disappointed. Our tour guide (Professor Mikhail?) did a masterful job of involving the kids every step of the way, weaving the history of some Oxford's venerable colleges with the Harry Potter story, some of which was filmed on site. Well worth the time and money!

I had a fun and informative last minute tour with my 15yo teen niece who is over here visiting from Canada.
Even though I’ve been to Oxford a few times times solo with guide books I still learnt lots of new facts from our superb guide Peter!
He had me struggling to contain my laughter with his acerbic town and gown observational wit (perhaps over the head for some international visitors unaccustomed to our British humour). Absolutely hilarious in my opinion and worth the tour price alone.
I didn’t expect to get all the tickets for the college and museum as it was a very last minute booking. He sorted us out and it saved me the time and hassle of long queues. Thank you!
Peter made it a real joy for those of us not huge Harry Potter fans ourselves but very interested in the local history and its famous literary connections.
That said, his knowledge on Harry Potter flummoxed even the hardcore fans!
My niece was very happy with the tour. Peter also kindly followed up with his film links by email after the tour had ended as promised.

Before saying anything about the tour, I would like to say comments about Visit Oxford Tours and my appreciation for their professionalism. Things at Oxford can change as they tell you. However, this business went above and beyond to inform and rearrange our visit so we could still see much of Oxford, moving locations and times due to flight delay. We missed the banquet hall for a luncheon but we saw everything else.
As for the tour itself, Peter guided us through the colleges of Oxford and shared significant details of not just the history but how the university influence both JK Rowling and the Harry Potter series both books and filming. In addition, he also highlighted the impact the University had on other children's books, most notably CS Lewis and the Chronicles of Narnia and Lewis Carrol and Alice and Wonderland.
Again you can schedule any history tour of Oxford but for my wife who was an English teacher and our children who she influence their reading, this was an insightful tour for us and we enjoyed our time with Peter. In addition to the University, Peter took us to the Turf Tavern, inside Blackwell's Books, where my wife got a 25th anniversary copy of HP and the Philosopher's Stone, and to the Oxford Covered Market, where we were introduced to Mulled Wine. Finally what I always like is a tour guide makes it easy for the entire family to get in great pictures and Peter was good at that too.
The tour was great and more importantly, the company put in the effort to work with us around changes we could not control.

Peter was an amazing individual full of so much knowledge, I would totally recommend this tour for all things Harry Potter and the colleges, churches, Oxford, you name it, Peter knows it and shares with you.
The indoor market, the library, the pubs from the films and local knowledge is second to none.
Definitely recommended and also the additional information on the best places to eat, drink and relax.

Our guide was Michiel van Hout, who absolutely made this experience utterly magical. My only regret is that I didn’t have more time in Oxford to do his Inklings tour, too! 100000/10 stars!.
I thought we were just signing up to see different Harry Potter movie locations in Oxford, but his tour was so much more than that! Michiel was so knowledgeable and passionate, and we learned all about the different wayys Oxford inspired JK Rowling and the HP books/movies certainly, but ALSO other monumental writers as well like C.S. Lewis and Tolkien. Between the rich history of Oxford itself, learning about how it has inspired both Rowling and other writers, AND seeing several, easily recognizable Harry Potter Locations: this fantasy lit nerd was in her ABSOLUTE GLORY.

Professor Michiel was so great and passionate sharing information and tips about Oxford. He was very knowledgeable and connected everything translating to what you see in reality to how it was filmed in Harry Potter movies, or how it inspired jk Rowling, Tolkien or Lewis. Everything that you see from the outside to the inside of the buildings had a story and a meaning behind it. Imagine that plus a perfect guide with humour and a vast knowledge about things and you get the perfect tour! Totally recommend!!

The tour was sporadic and disorganized. There wasn’t a lot of information of interest. We were milling around for 15 mins (there was someone who didn’t turn up so he continued to wait and the for some reason we were walking aimlessly around the market). There didn’t seem to be much structure to the tour or the talks. The guide didn’t introduce himself or the tour properly. There wasn’t actually much information on Harry Potter (“down that street is a college that was asked to film Harry Potter and they said no” - several times). Not sure how this got such good reviews - would not recommend.

Hi.
I am sorry to hear that you felt the tour did not meet your expectations.
I can decipher from your description that you joined the tour yesterday, April 8th, when there was a temporary market going on in our usual meet point. So yes, that did add chaos as we had about 35 clients turning up to be split between two guides but the market stalls and tents were erected exactly where we normally meet.
I apologise for the delay in the tour starting about as much as 15 minutes late. This was not good and for your info, this was because one of the guides had to be replaced at the very last minute. This is why the tour was delayed but I agree it's not how we want to deliver our normally excellent rated customer service. You were right to be annoyed about that. For reference, this Easter weekend was the busiest for the tours since 2019 and several of our staff who are Oxford students were also away for Easter break.
Of course, you are right to express freely your review and I always try to be open to criticism. I am surprised that you were not satisfied with your guide though as your guide was Peter and he has an almost unparalleled 5 star reviews ratings record (at least 95% of all his reviews are 5 stars). Peter also was awarded the best guide in South East England in the Beautiful South Tourism awards, just two years ago. He is a mine of knowledge on all things Harry Potter and he is also importantly a big fan too.
If he didn't introduce himself and the tour properly, that's probably because he was stressed out at discovering that suddenly, the other scheduled guide was not going to be able to turn up on time and thus, he had 35 people to lead rather than 14 persons.
Anyway, I apologise for the fact that you found your tour experience so disappointing.
Sincerely,
Alasdair

Roby was an amazing guide! She was not only incredibly knowledgeable about the Harry Potter series & its Oxford influences, but also about Oxford itself. She was engaging & enthusiastic about sharing her knowledge & we found ourselves wrapped up in it all! Our family appreciated that she was attentive & friendly on top of being so well informed. So much more in this tour than just a classical visit of Oxford: our guide Peter made it at all times wonderfully interesting, lively, full of information -whether historical facts, or fun stories and what's more he was genuinely kind and attentive to all the group! Our 17 year old Harry Potter enthusiast and JK Rowling fan was also completely ... enchanted ;). Thanks also Peter for the lovely walk back to the Botanical Gardens after!
Only regret is that guides weren't allowed to give us the Christ church tour as well: but this was of course still worth the visit and we found it very convenient to have it as a package. The contacts and information ahead of the tour with Alasdair were also impeccable ! ( as we had some constraints).
