    A pleasant afternoon in jail
I took my parents to the Shrewsbury Prison for the guided tour. We all thoroughly enjoyed it, which is a strange thing to say about spending time in jail. Donna, our guide was very knowledgable, imparting lots of information and stories about the prison through the ages from Georgian times, Victorian times, and until its closure in 2013. She delivered the information engagingly and at times compassionately offering thought provoking insights. The tour lasted about an hour and a half, and there was opportunity to continue exploring the prison yourself and read the information boards on display. It wasn’t until we reached the end of the tour that we learned it had been Donna’s first day on the job which was even more impressive! There are a cafe and toilets on site. You do spend some time outside and the buildings are cold, so warm clothing is advised in winter.

    Amazing, would 100% recommend
Absolutely amazing. We had Michael as our guide and he was great. Most of the guides are ex-prison officers so they can give you more information about the changes over the years in the justice system. Very informative but fun at the same time. Hint of ghost history too if that’s your kind of thing. Would 100% recommend for adults. Would not however recommend for young children. Nothing for them to do but listen. The kids that were on our tour just became restless and kind of annoying towards the end so if you’re looking for something children will enjoy too, unless they’re older and can appreciate the history this isn’t for kids.

    Fantastic ghost tour
Me and my partner went for a ghost tour last night. We had such a fantastic time. The two guys hosting it were amazing and such a credit to the prison. We definitely will be back!! Thankyou so much for a fantastic night.

    Fantastic day out
Recently visited Shrewsbury Prison for a guided tour, our tour was led by Paul. Paul was a fantastic guide and was very knowledgeable and had a great sense of humour. I'd highly recommend the guided tour, great value for money and you get to know all information before being allowed to explore on your own. Definitely going to return as I'd love to do a haunted tour.

    Day out at The Prison
Very intriguing and interesting day experiencing first hand what it’s like to be inside a Prison. We even got in to orange boiler suits and “ got locked up “ After a light lunch we then had a guided tour by Micheal after we came out of our cells !! who was full of interesting facts and history and took time to answer our questions . Also assisted by Michelle ( I think her name was)

    Very informative tour.
Very good and thorough tour, led by Charlotte who was very knowledgeable and added some humour too! She answered all our questions and was very generous with her time, going well over the time, not finishing until 4:30pm. Be aware though, the prison is cold, especially in February!

    Interesting and factual
We had a great afternoon at Shrewsbury Prison. Graham our tour guide was very engaging and was able to share his knowledge and experience of life in Shrewsbury Prison and others. Great that he was an ex Prison Officer and could offer this to us. The tour itself was almost 2hours, then you had free time to wonder around at your own leisure.

Would definitely recommended a guided tour
A really worthwhile tour. Graham our guide made it so interesting and he was a well of information not only about Shrewsbury Prison but life in the prison service, prisoners, conditions in the past and to the present day. Unless you are going on a hot sunny day dress up warmly it is very cold inside and the tour lasts 1 1/2 hours and some time is spent in the yard outside but it gives you some idea of what it must have been like before heating was installed.

    Excellent tour
Fascinating and informative afternoon with a dose of history and fun combined. Would recommend this tour to all ages. Our guide was Mike and he certainly knew his history and ensured his talk was age appropriate. Nowhere was off limits and we were able to go into the tiny cells and experience the atmosphere of what it was like to be a prisoner!

The trip to the prison was very interesting. Just walking around, imagining what kind of things went on in there. It’s hard to imagine the difference in atmosphere between then and now. It gives a good insight in to the way cells/living changed over the years, and makes you realise how restrictive prison life is. Next to no privacy, probably told what to do at almost every step of the day. Rather them than me! lol
If you’re in the area, give the prison a look, well worth the visit.

We decided to do this as it was something different to do, it’s not every day you get to go into a prison!
I’m glad we did, it was very interesting on what life was like inside. It was quite quiet when we went so had a good chance to look and read the information. I would thoroughly recommend a visit for most ages (there are stairs to get you onto the landings).

We're delighted you chose to experience something unique with us at our prison! It's true, exploring a prison isn't an everyday occurrence, and we're glad you found it fascinating to glimpse into life behind bars. Quiet visits offer a great opportunity to absorb all the information and details. Thank you for recommending us to visitors of various ages, and we appreciate your note about the stairs for accessibility. We hope to see you again soon for more eye-opening adventures!

On entry you are greeted with smiles and a friendly tone. The staff are very knowledgeable of the prisons history and workings of a prison.
There's lots to learn, see and do. Fantastic activities to keep children and adults occupied
Fabulous gift shop with items in a good price range (pocket money to higher priced items)

Good way to burn a couple of hours during the holidays. Kids enjoyed it. Restaurant was ideal, chips portions were massive ( much to the children's delight after stopping for a small snack).

Came here with my children and girlfriend. Greeted by a very friendly lady on reception who explained everything through thoroughly to us so we knew what was what. The history was very interesting inside the prison and we especially enjoyed the C wing, which can easily be missed if you’re not the best at map reading (like me). The cafeteria was small in size but a good selection of fresh food for everyone. Very interesting all round though, if you have toddlers/younger children they may find the narrow staircases overwhelming, but the beauty of the self guided tour being you go at your own pace.
We would like to return child free for the escape the prison adventure and a night in the cells.

I gave this attraction a 3.
For my reasons, as follows.
I felt their needed more interactive information for children, their was lots of reading, but as for seeing what prison was really like, my children came away feeling no more informative than when they went in.
A theatrical artist/historian to bring the cells to life could make a huge difference.
Examples of the most notorious criminals, life like mannequins.

Maybe a sensory room where people could view and touch items that may have been used once upon a time.

Though this seems like a negative review, it's not all bad.
Just a few improvements to make this a full experience for all would be amazing.

My bf and I intend to return one day, without our children, for a guided tour, as I believe more insight from a guide would really be appreciated.

Staff were polite and welcoming.

Our visit their was short, as our children got bored quickly, unfortunately 😐

Little improvements would make such a difference 🙂

We visited the prision during February half term! We enjoyed the experience - self guided tour lasted around 1.5! Went with two children under 10 and they were captivated during the whole experience! I do think its slightly expensive for the time of the experience we paid £40! Lots of information and interesting reads! Staff around are really friendly!

It would be good to have more interaction for younger children too as lots of boards to read some of the speakers were really quiet and others didnt work! Overall really enjoyed the experience thank you!

Love a dog friendly tourist attraction especially on a rainy half term! We did the self guided tour as with our dog. Lots to see and read, very informative. As the website warns, it is chilly so wrap up warm. The chill adds to the eeriness of the place though!
