    Absolutely fantastic museum! 😊
Absolutely fantastic place! So interesting and so much to look at, the armoury in particular was amazing! Loved the guided tour around the trenches with stories about the guides grandpa! Longest we've spent in a museum, we'll worth a visit 😊

As Good As Any Military Museum in the UK
As I had been at the 1994 Edinburgh Military Tattoo featuring, "Farewell to the Gordons," I wanted to see the museum of a regiment I was already familiar with. It's a nice bus ride from downtown on the 4,5, or 6 bus, Queen's Road is particularly pretty, and a short walk from the bus stop. The building is definitely not what you would picture a military museum being housed in; it's a former home and studio of artist Sir George Reid and is itself worthy of study. They offer an audio guide or a human guide, I went for the latter, a man named Stewart who knew everything there was to know and was the perfect guide: outgoing, friendly and knowledgeable. There are rooms galore stuffed with artifacts dating back to the 18th century. The Gordons fought almost everywhere so most conflicts are documented. One of the little things I noticed was one of the display cases said it was provided by Dame Judi Dench. How's that for having friends in high places? I have been to many, and I mean MANY, British military museums since the Imperial War Museum in London in 1992, and this is certainly one of the top collections. Add to it the cozy setting in a home instead of a huge building and you have a wonderful place to spend a few hours.

    Good Gordon Highlanders
We weren’t anticipating such a lengthy visit but the volunteers were ever-so-keen to show us around and point out numerous artefacts from the collection. It is a good museum with displays, information and videos so allow at least a couple of hours to visit.

THIS IS A MUST SEE EXPERIENCE.
Well worth the time and effort. Very informative on the Gordon Highlanders. I did not know what to expect but the facility, information and friendly staff made this a fantastic experience. If you think you might not be interested in the Gordon Highlanders you will be pleased after you experience the museum. I will be go back the next time I am in Aberdeen.

Excellent personal tour by Marcus. All in the entrance fee. Amazingly interesting from start to finish in the trenches. Wonderfully so many facts and details. Gardens to sit in, cafeteria, squeaky clean toilets . Staff helpful and friendly.

A Most Informative & Enjoyable Visit
It's many years since I had visited this museum. It's been updated since my last visit. Our party were 4 adults and 2 infants. Ample free parking space for us. Easy (slightly uphill) access for us into this listed building. Wheelchair access too. At reception we were given concessions for some of our party. Therefore £36 for all (no time limit). Friendly, helpful staff in a very clean and tidy environment. We decided to not use the audio guide for the museum, but a volunteer guide (at the same price). He was excellent and made our day. Very knowledgeable and attentive. Thank you Mr Marcus M. A small and informative museum. Very well laid out, with a couple of small videos to watch within it relating to the Gordon's history (one of which required the volume to be increased, as I strained to hear it). We had a family member in the 5th Gordon Highlander Bn., killed at The Somme in 1916, which I'll try and find more information about via this museum (his service record). A lift system is in place to move between floors if required. Downstairs to see the Armoury, the Silver Rm and the Officers' Mess Dining Rm (which can be hired for the evening). All were splendid. After we were taken outside to see the informative WW1 trench system. This added to the whole museum experience and an insight to the horrific way of life in the trenches during that war. Our tour ended once back inside at the cafe with Marcus. We had lunch there as a family, viewed the small gift shop, visited the immaculate toilets, wandered outside in the tiered garden down to the burn. All so well looked after. I found the garden area very peaceful considering it's in the middle of a city. We had a most enjoyed experience at this museum. Recommended.

    Gordon Highlanders Museum
Visited the museum whilst staying in Montrose, our father and our uncle were both in the Gordon Highlanders, will get them to do some research for us. Found our uncle mentioned in the book St Valarie and the Aftermath. A lot of very interesting items on show, some film shows and a mock up trench out in the gardens, very informative, you can walk about with hand held eletronic guides at your own pace. Set in very nice gardens, refreshments available from the cafe and a small gift shop

    Authentic and Informative
A super museum that is visually stunning, filled with memorabilia throughout the Gordon Highlanders history. Absolute highlight for me was the trench. What an astounding resource that is available to visit with a guide. My guide, Martin, was fab. So much information set up to allow understanding and empathy. 5/5

    Pleasant Cafe, Charming Gardens.
We did not look at the museum, just popped into the cafe for lunch. The cafe was clean and pleasant and the toilets were very clean. Unfortunately there is no menu so you just have to look at what's there. Disappointingly the sandwiches are all pre-made and wrapped so if you don't want mayonnaise etc you are stuck. I had the lentil soup which was nice and reasonably priced. The scones and cakes looked nice but we didn't have any. You can sit inside or outside in the gardens which is nice on a warm day. The staff were pleasant and helpful.

I've been meaning to visit the Gordon Highlanders museum for ages. Booked my ticket online which was an easy process. I opted for the audio tour. The museum has a very mordern contemporary look about. The collection itself is very well displayed in well light displays.
All the staff and volunteers are so helpful and have an amazing knowledge of the display. There is a brilliantly WW1 trench replica outside, like everything else in the museum is done to a high standard. I spent about 2 1/2 hours there. The cafe looked really nice but I'm a fat lad trying to resist the temptations of the lovely cakes on display. If your in the area its most definitely worth a visit.

Spent an afternoon at the museum and it was a great tour through the history of the Gordon Highlanders, which is extensive.

The museum is well laid out, the staff are friendly and the audio guide is a great addition. Be sure not to miss the trench which is outside, just down the hill.

After the tour we had a coffee and a scone from the cafe, sitting outside in the lovely gardens.

Well wort a visit!

I have a family connection with the Gordon Highlanders so this was always going to be a special visit. My deep thanks to Mike, one of the volunteers and a retired Gordon Highlander who took me on a very personal tour of the museum. His pride in the Highlanders and his knowledge of its g=history was fantastic.
In his debt.
Kind regards,
Andrew

Oh my gosh this place is amazing. We found it on our way to Johnston Gardens.
The museum is amazing and trench recreation is also great.
The staff were an added bonus so friendly and so knowledgeable.
I wanted to thank Darren who gave us the opportunity to see some of the silverware up close in the dinning room as he happened to be cleaning it, and also telling us some great stories about some of it.
Lynne who showed is around the trench was great too.
Also want to thank Davide in the Cafe he was very friendly.
All in all I would definitely recommend that if you are in Aberdeen you visit this place.

Great displays showing the history of the regiment over the last 200 years. I enjoyed learning about the regiment itself and all the British involved wars. It was interesting to see how battle technology has progressed through the years. Big shout out to our trench guide Davide who was very informative. Standard admission was £10 and that included our audio guide.

Just back from a visit and fantastic tour around the Gordon Highlanders Museum.
Guides were excellent and informative
Exhibitions were all very interesting. Especially the silver room.

There is no doubt that what former Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill once said still rings true, the Gordon Highlanders were the finest regiment in the world and the staff and museum do them justice.

I visited today with my partner and 13 year old son. We paid our admission and first went to the cafe for a drink before starting the museum. The cafe was quite big and had no problem finding a seat and being served.

Our guide was called Norman. He first showed us to a little room where we watched a film for about 18 minutes. On the way down the corridor, he referred to pictures and tapestries on the wall, telling us information about them that we wouldn’t have known had we just looked at them ourselves.

The film was well put together and very informative. After the film, we went into the larger room in the museum. This has a large collection of medals and other artefacts. My son did a quiz on the way round and there were some dressing up clothes at the end, which even my 13 year old had a go at! On our way round, Norman kept popping by to see if we were ok and to point out more interesting things.

When we had finished in there, Norman took us outside to the new trench. I found this fascinating as it has been designed to look and feel like a real trench, minus the mud! Again, Norman was very knowledgeable and his anecdotes and stories were so very interesting.

After the trench, we went back to the main building and looked at the National Service exhibition, dining room, silver room and the armouries. All very interesting and again, Norman’s personal stories and knowledge about it all was wonderful to listen to.

In total we spent about 3 hours in the museum and the time just flew. Norman made this a very special experience. As I said to my son, it was so nice to listen to his personal stories and anecdotes as that is history from a real life source. He was not only knowledgable but made jokes and imparted his knowledge and stories in such a way that I could listen to him all day.

Thank you Norman and the other guides we met along the way too!

Thank you very much for such a lovely review. We will make sure Norman gets the feedback especially as he seems to have made your day an experience. We are always trying to make things of interest for all ages and it was great to hear that your son was also engaged with the museum and the trench. Once again thanks for the wonderful feedback
