I booked this tour last minute when another company cancelled my tour because they didn't have enough people. This itinerary might not be the first choice for most people visiting Scotland, had I not been before I would have selected a Highlands tour or an Outlander tour but I had not been to Melrose or Jedburgh so I picked this one.
I had already been to Roslyn and Hadrian's Wall but it was nice to see them again. The tour covers a lot of ground but the time at each was enough to see all of the sites. Our guide Keith was fantastic, he talked before each site and then you are allowed to go at your own pace at the sites. He gave us multiple options at each place depending on whether you wanted to pay the admission or explore something else. On the way back he played some Scottish music.
The group size is great, I think it's limited to 16 and we had 12. Everyone was on time for each of the sites which is always important when you have so much to see.
At Roslyn I had enough time to see the Chapel and walk to see the ruins of Roslyn Castle.
At Melrose you can either see the Abbey (under masonry repair at the moment) or have lunch. If you bring your own lunch, you can easily see the town and the Abbey. There's also a nice butcher shop that sells pies and sausage rolls.
Hadrian's Wall, you can either visit Houseteads Fort or go for a short walk along the wall. bring good shoes if you want to do that as it's steep along the wall and could be muddy if you walk the lower ground.
The stop at Jedburgh is more of a photo op, the Abbey was closed (again for masonry repairs) but you can get a nice photo and wander over to see the Mary Queen of Scots house.
Our final photo stop was a beautiful view where Walter Scott's funeral procession stopped for the view.
I've done tours before with Rabbie's and this was very comparable in terms of quality and guides and the group size is the same. Just like Rabbie's, admission fees are extra (Melrose, Roslyn and Houseteads). I would definitely use this company again.

I loved this excursion partly because our tour guide Angela who is probably one of the best in the business. She has such an amazing gift to weave in stories and music that coincide with our experiences. She’s fun and funny and inviting and creates a very inclusive atmosphere within the group.
But along with Angela being spectacular the places we visited are so beautiful. Starting with the Rosslyn Chapel it’s just such a special place to see in person. Then onto Melrose and the adorable town adjacent to the Abby. We had lunch there and it was spectacular for such a small place the shops and restaurants are excellent.

I went on the "Rosslyn Chapel, the Borders and Hadrian's Wall" tour with Paul.
What I like most of this company are the small groups: on this occasion it was only 6 of us and Paul started the day with small talk so we could get to know the other participants and create a friendly atmosphere.
He took us to explore a beautiful region of Scotland and entertained us with very interesting stories. He also went beyond expectations taking advantage of the small size of our group to personalize the tour adding a few extra stops.
I appreciated going on a tour on low season as we were able to visit touristic sites with very few other people, the complete opposite of summer!

Late review I went in July 2019. It's been a dream of mines to see Hadrian's Wall since I'm into Roman history. The tour was excellent and Mr. Lain was friendly, knowledgeable, and funny. The stops were well planned; Rosslyn Chapel was beautiful and I had a good amount of time in Melrose to see the Abbey. I even had time to stop and take a few quick pictures at the border between Scotland and England before driving on to Houseteads Fort on Hadrian's Wall which I loved (Roman History I can't get enough of it) Mr. Lain played Scottish music on the way back to Edinburgh and had the whole bus singing at one point! That was a fun thing to do, it kept everyone awake and happy from being tired. The whole tour was wonderful I will recommend Heart of Scotland tour to my friends and family when they go.

Our guide Graham was very welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable, offering great info/history of the area and tour points. We covered a lot of ground considering the short winter day. I’m happy I chose this tour company over a larger one, they delivered a really high quality tour.

We left a review for the “Stirling Castle and Whisky Small Group Day Tour from Edinburgh” earlier so everything about the tour company’s attentiveness, good planning, and the great bus applies here. What also applies is how awesome Iain is. When we saw that he was going to be our guide again we were super happy and despite how many tours he must do he recognized us too! The weather was a bit “wild and woolly” as Iain aptly put it, but he still made it a wonderful time. Rosslyn Chapel was neat to visit, the brief stop at the border was a quick bit of fun, Melrose was wonderful, and the weather didn’t stop us from enjoying Hadrian's Wall at Housesteads Fort. We would have perhaps liked a little bit more time in Melrose to enjoy the abbey, but we tend to run a little slow and I think an hour is likely more than enough time for many people to have eaten and visited the abbey to their satisfaction. Once again, Iain made a good trip great. He knows exactly when to engage you with history, information, or a wonderful story and also knows when to let everyone relax and play Gaelic music he has curated (and also thoughtful enough to introduce and explain). We highly recommend this tour company, and especially Iain!

I can't recommend Heart of Scotland tours enough! We did the Rosslyn Chapel/Hadrian's Wall tour with Iain. Every part of this tour was excellent and Iain was friendly, knowledgeable, and funny.- the perfect guide! The stops were well-planned; Rosslyn Chapel was beautiful and we had the perfect amount of time in Melrose to see the Abbey and to grab some lunch to eat on the bus before the next stop. We even had time to stop and take a few quick pictures at the border between Scotland and England before driving on to Houseteads Fort on Hadrian's Wall, which was amazing! Iain played lovely Scottish music on the way back to Edinburgh (and had the whole bus singing at one point!), which was a nice touch. The whole tour was wonderful- a perfect way to see the Chapel and the Wall!

Although it was a typically wet and windy day, the tour today with Iain was a delight. He made us feel confortable, gave hilarious and insightful commentary about the sites as we drove along. The sites were interesting and worth visiting. Have already booked another day trip even though we are in Edinburgh for only a few days. Had a thoroughly enjoyable day out.

Could not recommend this day tour or the tour company more. We loved the tour. Our guide Euan was great. His extensive knowledge of the history and the area was very impressive. He kept us entertained in between stops with historical story's and lovely Scottish music. Don't hesitate, you want to book this tour.

Everything in time.
Good for adults, not sure about the kids under 10.
On the way back home we were enjoying very authentic local Gaelic music. I liked it very much.

Hello,
I noticed Hadrian's Wall is in england and I only have Scotish GBP. I do not have any english currencies. I know some shops do not accept scottish currencies. Has anyone been there & paid using scottish currencies?
Thanks a lot!

We had no trouble with the different currencies because we only stopped at the gift shop for Hadrian’s Wall in England and they accepted what we had for money. Everything else on the tour was technically in Scotland.

It’s confortable for small groups and they only allow enough people to enjoy the comforts of the van and tour. It lasts about 9 hours and is very entertaining.

I enjoyed my tours with the Wee Red Bus. The maximum amount of people is 16: you have more time at each stop. I did a larger tour and the bus was packed with so many people. We didn’t have as many stops or time. That being said, the tour was scheduled for that many people and I don’t feel like I missed anything.
It all depends on what your “dream trip” to Scotland looks like: there are so many worthwhile tours! When I go back, I’ll be heading way north to the islands and more towards coastline. I did the same tours as “puffinsandpaisley” and enjoyed both, as well.
You will hear all about William Wallace and “Braveheart”; “Outlander”, and “The DaVinci Code”; Harry Potter” fan? “Holy Grail?” “James Bond?” (To name a few!) Edinburg Castle is amazing-you need at least four hours to enjoy it. I would have done Sterling Castle and the islands if I had had more time. You will love Scotland! You can read all of my in-depth reviews on my TripAdvisor page. Have fun!!
You have mentioned the stop at Melsore. Does it include visit in Melrose Abbey?

What location does the tour access Hadrian's Wall, Steel Rigg car park by chance?
Cynthia

I went in the winter - I think you can access Hadrian’s Wall by Steel Rigg - we didn’t because this was a specific tour (Not just Hadrian’s Wall) and it was off-season.

Hi, as it says admission to the attractions is not included, does this mean these are external views only without an opportunity to go inside Rosslyn Chapel or to see whatever part of the wall (is there a museum or exhibit nearby) requires a fee? Or does it simply mean we pay the fee when we get there. If the latter, about how much time is given to explore the chapel or the area of the wall? Thank you.
Chris V
East Boothbay, ME30 contributions
For Rosslyn Chapel you can not access the chapel or its immediate outside area without buying a ticket to get in. We were able to spend about 45 minutes there. It was well worth the fee to go in. For the wall you are able to walk the wall without paying the admission. We elected to pay the fee to see the fort. We had about an hour at the wall. I will say it is about a 1/4 mile up a hilly path to get to the wall and fort.

The tour bus allowed us a stop at Hadrians Wall , probably for about 1 1/2 hours. It was enough time to look around the shop/museum and a wander around some of the ruins. Time to admire the view.

How long is the tour and can a small well behaved dog come along?
aleris l
Brooklyn, NY20 contributions
Thats a good question. The tour is an all day tour. One of the longest due to the travel time from one area to another. I did see MANY people bring dogs to the area but they were not on the specific tour group with us. We all get there in a small van and im not sure if they allow animals in the van. But if you drive out there on your own, i dont see why you wouldnt be able to bring your dog.
