    Not worth the money
Tour would be great for teenage girls on a camping trip but not adults. I love ghost tours more than anything but this one was cheesy. Tour needed some humor, more history and less high school drama performances. Every time the girl giving the tour yelled, everyone was rolling their eyes.

    Interesting and knowledgeable
Interesting tour with great tour guide who showed a lot of knowledge and interesting facts about Edinburgh and the vaults. Access to the vaults was cool.

A unique experience of the hidden (horrific ?) side of Edinburgh
I went with a friend of mine to this original tour of the city. The guides were really on point and set the mood by telling us terrific, horrific tales and ghastly ghosts stories ! We also learned about the history of the city and who were the most famous "body snatchers" of Edinburgh at the time. We had a good time even if their stories haunted me a little, the days after... Thank you for this amazing experience ;)

    Really good.
Did the doomed dead and buried tour. The young lady leading us was very very good. I can't remember her name but she had her hair dyed various shades of purple and great makeup. We went into the Blair street vaults, into some Close's and graveyards. Her story telling was flawless and sometimes theatrical, and the headset was a good help to stop any background noise spoiling it. (Edinburgh was very busy and noisy when we visited) The tour wasnt set out to be terrifying, the stories were mainly about historical atrocities which occured, and she deliivered them clearly. I'm into history so it was"right up my street"

    Wonderful historical tour!
Marina was an excellent guide, and interspersed humor about Edinburgh while making sure we understood the historical impact of the Vaults. Would recommend for any historian or really anyone visiting Edinburgh.

Great tour company - Wonderful tour!
We really enjoyed the Historic Underground tour on Thursday. Nicola was entertaining and very knowledgeable. She got us all safely through the dimly lot and spooky underground rooms. On Friday, Marina was our guide for the Secrets of The Royal Mile with admission to Edinburgh Castle. Marina pointed out a lot of things on the Royal Mile the we never would have noticed otherwise. I chose Mercat Tours because I had read about their commitment to lead responsible tours and to give back to the local community. We really appreciated the small group sizes and the use of headsets so we could hear everything our guides said. I was especially grateful for the care they took with my two elderly friends, including providing them with collapsible stools. Thank you. We all had a wonderful time - two times!

    Ghoulishly Good!
My friend and I managed to squeeze onto one of these last minute, and god was it worth it! Our lovely guide Emma was incredible, really put everything into her storytelling and had us hooked! The stories were interesting and gory, the vaults were incredible to see and overall we just had a brilliant time! Big thank you also to Rory in the Mercat Tours shop - we stopped by the day after to purchase hoodies to commemorate our tour, and he was kind enough to open up the discovery room for us to have a look at whilst we were there. Thanks to all the guys at Mercat Tours, was definitely a highlight!

    Totally worth it!
We did the Hidden & Haunted evening tour (no children). The guide was very knowledgeable and a great storyteller. The tour was informative and entertaining. The guide was loud enough that the headsets were not necessary the whole time, but was a nice to have for those hard of hearing.

Um bom começo para explorar a histórica Old Edinburgh and your most brilliant gem!
A guided tour by an excellent guide with an excellent historical knowledge who introduced us to part of this historic city in the vicinity of the Royal Mile! It was really worth it and especially the included visit of the castle without going through the small queue.

The highlight of a wet day in Edinburgh
Whistle stop tour meant we only had a day in Edinburgh.... & it was WET! The highlight was the brilliant Doomed, Dead & Buried walking tour with our amazing guide Michael. History blended with ghoulish tales, delivered with Michael's noteable theatrical performance. Spooky, funny & although I've visited Edinburgh often, was a whole new perspective. Thoroughly recommend

"Doomed, dead and Buried" - not quite, but close 😁
This was a fascinating and FUN tour - 02/09/2024. Our host, Michael, was extremely knowledgeable, enthusiastic and brought the tour to life. If this tour was anything to go by I would also thoroughly recommend all their other tours although I've not participated in them. Many thanks Michael for a great evening, from Guy (Bluebeard) and Lauren 😁

    Hidden and Haunted!
Hidden and Haunted Adult Tour. This was a really interesting tour, Sarah our tour guide really made it fun and interesting. She was brilliant, getting everyone involved. There was a talk above ground for 30 minutes then a 30 minutes tour in the vaults. The vaults were fascinating! We didn’t see anything ghostly though! The ground can be quite uneven so need to take care, but you are made aware of this. Worth a visit especially if you are interested in old history.

In my opinion it was drawn out to last 1hr15mins to justify the £14 price pp. the lady who guided us was good at her job so not her fault for the bad review. Spent around 40 mins in the freezing cold in the street just explaining history which essentially should of taken about 5mins really. It could of easily been half an hour and £7 would of been suffice. Certainly not worth anymore than that .

Horrible , avoid at any cost they over book people and then charge them soooo much e.g 200 pounds for 4 people and they cancel it last minute surely if you cancel they won’t refund . So I’ve complained this to local council and I’ve complained to ofcom if this happens to you please do report it cos they surely have no morals and I never left a bad review or anything for anyone but this time I felt the need to leave a review for people who don’t know the tricks . So please do look into it before booking as we’ve been let down very last minute when we cancelled all our plans for this

Many thanks for getting in touch. Our team are incredibly disappointed you've had this experience, caused by an external 3rd party IT issue. It's not the normal high quality experience our visitors have with Mercat and we're happy to help you understand what went wrong. Sadly, because tickets for the private guided tour were purchased through a 3rd party seller rather than directly on our website there is a delay between your transaction and it being accepted/declined on our own booking site. Your booking wasn't accepted because it was already 'sold out' on our own website. The high ticket price was due to selecting a private guided tour, rather than a scheduled tour. Rest assured that we've already escalated the matter with our 3rd party ticket sellers to find solutions and prevent issues in future. Please do contact the 3rd party site who hold your money and they will process a full refund. This is still a difficult time for everyone as we try our best within restrictions - empathy and understanding helps a great deal when issues occur. Sincere apologies again, Kat Brogan, Owner

The tour was only 75 minutes and only a small portion of that time was spent in The Vaults. It started off with a 15 minute story about torture that had nothing to do with The Vaults and the tour guide made two men pretend they were prisoners and whipped them. It was a waste of time and ridiculous. When inside The Vaults, the tour guide told fake stories about people hearing and seeing ghosts inside and spent the time trying to scare people. There was nothing much to see inside, a couple of rooms which really just looked like a cellar. For £14 each it was a complete rip off.

Hi Hannah, thanks for taking time to leave a response and we're sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your tour. All the stories we tell about the vaults are based in true reports of people's experiences down there. Also our tour guides do try to inject an element of fun spookiness as this is what people generally expect on a ghost tour. Sorry this wasn't your cup of tea. All the best, Louise

This was a good tour with loads of fun information and a great tour guide, Lauren who was very animated and brought the stories to life. However, the tour was a bit mixed. It started with talk about witchcraft, then overcrowding in the city then to the vaults talking about the ghosts. I would have thought that as it is advertised as a "ghostly" tour that this would of been a more prominent theme throughout. Had it have been called a historical tour with ghostly vaults it would have been more fitting.

Hi Sophie, Sorry that you did not find the tour to your taste on this occasion. The reason why we share some of the city's history to begin with is to give a backstory to the vaults and peoples lives at the time before we enter them. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate your feedback, All the best, Kim

A friend and I booked onto this tour and we weren’t disappointed. It was a good mix of gruesome stories around the old town and spooky walks through the vaults. “Hes“ was our guide and she was a great actress with a good amount of sarcasm to make the stories fun but also very serious when necessary and to add to the spookiness of the stories under ground. We thought it was good value for money and would recommend.

Was expecting something else. The tour guide was knowledgeable but not engaging and it felt like he just rehearsed the same speech so many times(including the small jokes)that he was kind of bored himself.
The whole experience was boring - could have been done 10 times better.
Definitely not worth the price.

Ana was our guide for the night. First she walked us round a few features of the town above ground, giving us a spooky history of Edinburgh of Old. We then went down into the vaults and she continued her tour including historical information and ghostly features. Despite the wet and windy December weather, she made the tour an engaging, spooky, informative and all round fantastic evening. We all commented how it was the best feature of the whole weekend. She brought a fantastic level of drama and excitement to the tour and made it completely worth it. Will definitely recomend to anyone visiting.

We had a supernatural time with Scott (had to say it)! Loved the late night tour. Would especially recommend the last tour as you will get to blow out vault candles as you move along in the darkness. Been to Edinburgh several times, was great to see and hear about the less glamorous side!!

The tour guide, Margaret Ann, was extremely informed and enthusiastic which made it a much more interactive and enjoyable tour. As well as hearing about the ghost stories we've heard all about the history of Edinburgh, how it would have looked and felt to live there in the past. the tour was also all within a small area, i have mobility issues and although i don't often have problems due to medication control on the day i was concerned as we'd already walked so far around Edinburgh and i was getting tired. luckily the tour is so immersive and is over a small area i didn't have any problems at all.
My only suggestion would be to perhaps advise customers to have a torch with them or hand out torches, due to the Covid19 restrictions we found we were trying to find out way into the vaults alone because we had to wait for the people in front of us to already be at the bottom. The headsets we were given cut out and we had no idea where we were going to find the rest of the group as they had already moved on when we got through the top entrance and down to the bottom of the stairs at the start of the vaults.
