About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- hannahmV8440GU0 contributionsA brilliant way to spend a few hoursIt’s not often that I leave a review, but this one is well earned! We spent one night in Edinburgh on a work trip and decided to use it (very wisely!) on the ghost and ghouls tour. Jack was a fantastic storyteller and made 2 hours seem like 10 minutes as we were totally engrossed in every story. Well worth the money, a brilliant way to spend a few hours, and we will absolutely be back.Written 18 January 2025
- Navigator390423932670 contributionsExciting, gripping and truly spooky!Steph was our tour guide and right from the start she had us on the edge of our seats. The way that she told the stories was so gripping. Once we went into the underground vaults things definitely got spookier, we heard gruesome tales and even the watcher's boots stomping up and down the corridor! At one point I jumped out of my skin! It was fascinating to hear some of the history of edinburgh and the stories of the vaults. I would absolutely recommend this tour to friends and family visiting edinburgh. Truly a fantastic experience and one to remember for years to come. I wish we had more time on our trip so that we could try all of the tours!Written 17 January 2025
- Traveler647989534280 contributionsWonderful tour and fantastic tour guide ShannonWe did the ghost vault tour on a Tuesday evening in January with Mercat Tours. I have to say as a past tour guide seeing and doing so many tours, it was an excellent tour. Shannon kept us all engaged from start to finish. She even chatted and answered questions before the tour even started. I found the tour well planned out as we got half the time outside and in the closes/alleys and the other half underground in the vaults. Shannon has the perfect balance of storytelling, drama and humour without any hammy over acting. She was so knowledgable and easy to listen to. Highly recommend this tour and tour company.Written 17 January 2025
- Sam08500 contributionsUnderground ghost tourBoth myself and my partner had a fantastic time on the ‘ghostly underground’ tour. From start to finish our tour guide Linda was brilliant. Funny, captivating and really brought the stories to life. Historical fact mixed with dark stories and ghostly goings on. Couldn’t recommend this enough. We will be using mercat tours again when we come back to Edinburgh.Written 16 January 2025

- johnnypE2589JI0 contributionsA great experience. Even for locals! As part of a Christmas present for my daughter we went on an underground tour of the Edinburgh South Bridge vaults. Despite only living 25 minutes from Edinburgh and having been to the city more times than I’ve had hot dinners it was such a fascinating tour finding out lots of new things about a city that, as a local, you kind of take for granted. Veni was such a great tour guide who was friendly and knowledgable and a credit to Mercat Tours. If we’re brave enough we’ll be back for the ghost tour!!Written 13 January 2025

Learned a lot about the haunted history of the city from our amazing storyteller Steph. Entered the underground of the city and enjoy a nice Scottish whiskey (or cream soda). 10/10 experience that I’ll be recommending to anyone who visits Edinburgh!Written 12 January 2025
- tetstb0 contributionsGreat fun and very well presented.Tour was excellent and the guide Michael was hilarious, knowledgeable and extremely entertaining. It was a fun evening exploring some of Edinburghs hidden depths and a dive into its murky past. Would recommend but wrap up warm in winter and wear comfortable shoes. Only criticism is that we booked the tour with the drink at the end but this was not offered and the tour ended in the Graveyard.Written 11 January 2025

This is the first tour I've done since Covid-19 wreak havoc in the travel industry and I was happily surprised because Mercat Tours have again outdone themselves. Our tour guide (Steven) was not only incredibly knowledgeable but a fantastic storyteller who took us all on a journey through the darkest stories of Edinburgh. Going into the Blair Street vaults was the icing on the cake. That place is eerie and always gives me the chills, but, again, Steven guided us through the Vaults and told us lots of stories by candlelight. The tour ends at the Canongate Cemetery, a welcome stop since most tours go to Greyfriars and that can get overcrowded. Canongate is also a really fascinating place full of stories and tales of times past.
Really worth it. If you can, do it!
Mercat Tours have implemented plenty of measures to make their tours safe. There are hand sanitising stations before and after entering the vaults. The guide wore a face screen and had a lovely audio system so we all could hear him (please bring your own headphones, although if you forget them they will give you disposable ones). There was plenty of distance and we were encouraged at all times to keep a lot of space between each of us.
The travel industry is really struggling in these hard times and going on these type of tours (even as a local) helps local companies keep going. I'd encourage you to join one of Mercat Tours' tours to support a brilliant local company. You'll learn a lot about Edinburgh.

Me & my wife did the Doomed, Dead And Buried tour - our guide Mark was brilliant! We were provided with headphones so we didn't miss anything and could hear Mark clearly throughout the tour. There was a group of around 18 people mostly in couples. We'd liked to have spent more time in the vaults, but overall it was a really enjoyable experience and would recommend Mercat Tours if you are visiting!

Steve was an excellent guide who clearly loves what he does, it was a joy to see someone with so much passion and gousto take us round the ghostly underbelly of Edinburgh. The vaults were spooky and atmospheric, underpinned by excellent knowledge and history told by the guide. He really made our weekend and dispite the distractions of a busy Saturday evening in Edinburgh was informative, engaging and entertaining. A really good addition were the headphone sets. We forgot to bring headphones but they provided spare pairs for us (covid safe in seperate packets). These then plugged into headsets that were connected to the guides microphone so you could hear everything that was going on at all times.
We even caught a couple of ghostly apperitions on photos (one in the vault of a victorian dressed lady, and one in the graveyard clear as day, a man sitting on one of the graves with his arms crossed). So we left happy and spooked which was the intention. A very good experience and well worth the money. We loved it!

Those photos sound like incredible captures, how eerie. We wonder who those ghostly people might have once been.

Liked the stories, and engaging tour guide. We booked this more to see and experience the underground vaults but sadly, it was only about 20 mins of almost 2 hour total. This was really disappointing. Plus, we weren’t left to experience the vaults, or have a look around. The tour guide kept talking the whole time and didn’t let us explore or even look around the rooms. Could be improved a great deal.

I have done this tour 12 years ago with the same company and it was much more interesting. I think our tourguide was called Faith back then, but I'm not sure.
Jared was a very nice person, but from the way he was telling things or conveying the stories, you couldn't make out whether he was joking or not.
I remember from the tour 12 years ago that this company takes the things people experience in the vaults quite serious, but I couldn't have made that out from Jared. He conveys everything in such a way as to make it difficult to make out whether he's just making stuff up to scare you, or actually warning you.
Back then the tourguide was more respectful towards the ghost that were rumoured to be in the vaults. She also had much more background info.
The stories I heard now had the same 'players' but the info we got barely touched the surface compared to back then.
I remember being so took with the vaults back then, that I've been pestering my husband for 12 years to go back and I am a little disappointed.
I personally would have loved to hear more about the supposed ghosts and what could be found out about them, also about what happened to people in the vaults.
I'm also not a big fan of the hearing devices. I do understand it's much better for the guide's voice to not yell the whole day, but I feel like it disconnects you as a guide from the group.
I do want to stress that Jared is a very nice guy and should certainly be doing tours because he is cut out for entertaining people. Personally I just would have liked to have this tour with a little more seriousness.

Hi KathVerhaegen,
Thank you for returning to visit us again. It really means a lot to hear that you enjoyed your first tour so much that you wished to come back over 10 years later!
We're sorry to hear that you did not enjoy the experience as much this time. We take all visitor feedback into consideration, both good and bad. While most visitors rate our tours five-stars, we're aware tastes may vary. Our storytellers have their own styles of sharing the tales of Edinburgh and we're sorry it wasn't to your taste on this occasion. Jared is one of the longest standing members of our storytelling team and we often receive very positive feedback from visitors on his tours.
All the best,
Kim

We went on Mercat’s Doomed, Dead and Burried tour and it was absolutely brilliant. Our tour guide, Steve, was as chilling as he was hilarious. His theatrics and loud voice contrasted by his perfect gravelly low voice for the creepier bits were everything we were hoping for when booking this.

Myself and my boyfriend spent a few days in Edinburgh beginning of September. We done our tour at night with Jared the tour guide, he was excellent and made the tour! we also had to bring our own headphones, upon arrival we were handed a box to plug our headphones into. Jared had a microphone around his neck and we listened to him talking through the headphones. We found this an excellent idea as it blocked out the city noise and people and made the experience truly focused on Jared and the tour. It was also a smart idea as you could walk your own pace and still hear everything he was saying, no one was left behind and he always made sure he had the numbers before he would start the next part of the tour. We both thoroughly enjoyed it and will be back to do one of the other tours!

My husband and I went on the ‘Doomed, Dead and Buried’ tour on our minimoon trip to Edinburgh, and we couldn’t recommend this enough! We’ve since recommended this to family and friends.
The tour guide, Margaret Ann, was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and funny.
They use audio gear which you can plug your own headphones into and set to the volume you like. This was great, as it meant you didn’t need to huddle closely together or try to play catch up. It came in particularly handy when walking through the busy and vibrant streets.
The tour was a perfect blend of ghostly tales and experiences, and history. It had a small element of theatrics in its story-telling; not too much, but just enough to set the mood. If, like us, you’re into both your history and your spooky tales, you’ll thoroughly enjoy.
Fantastic!

We really enjoyed this tour. Our guide, Michael, was a really good story-teller with something of a dead-panned humor. But, the off-beat stories also educated as well. I would recommend this tour to anyone as a secondary tour after they've been on the full tour of the Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle.

Really enjoyed the ghost tour and the improvisation Jared gave (the busking saxophone player nearby was a curious addition to 16th century edinburgh ghosts!). Entertaining and light-hearted. Suspend belief for an hour and you’ll have a blast!

How spooky/Scary is this tour? We didn't survive long in the Edinburgh Dungeon (exited by a side door part way through). Hoping for spooky fun not hair raising scary.

It can be spooky and it is quite dark and enclosed but it wasn't too bad. If you do not like confined and dark spaces do not go.

Hi - how much of the vaults do you see on this tour. I have read reviews of various other tours by other companies and they only go in a couple of basement rooms and were disappointed. Many thanks Christine

We went into a few rooms in the vaults. It was the last part of the tour and quite interesting.
