- Travellers should have a moderate physical fitness level
- Many children have enjoyed the tour, however it’s based on Rowling’s rags to riches story & so is dark. The more difficulties a person has overcome, the more you can learn from them. This tour has darker stories from Rowling’s instructive biography, which I hope will inspire those ready to achieve more
- The tour is also based on the books, the books have some adult themes which I give credit too, because 'they're just children's books' annoys me. People who have just seen the movies may not be aware of these darker themes
- 5 km+ of up and down walking through Edinburgh’s hilly old town
- 4¼ HOURS is a long time so BREAKFAST. Think everybody’s favourite Gameskeeper: if your feet haven’t swollen to baby Dolphins - keep shovelling!
- This tour is also available as a private tour, along with a more JKR-comprehensive 5¾ hour private tour & 8hr Potter Cornucopia with lunch. Please contact Potter Tour
- Not recommended for people requiring mobility aids, e.g. a stick, 6km of hilly walking is demanding. Contact me for a private tour
- This tour/activity will have a maximum of 16 travellers
- For a full refund, cancel at least 24 hours in advance of the start date of the experience.
- If you have questions about this tour or need help making your booking, we’d be happy to help. Just call the number below and reference the product code: 65182P1

About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- saralshehata0 contributionsMust-do tour for Harry Potter obsessed! We had an absolute blast with Sam on our 8-hour tour! My 10 year-old Harry Potter obsessed daughter and I are doing a Harry Potter road trip for her birthday. Sam’s stories, activities and sights (and of course his wizard robes!) were above and beyond. Sam walks and talks fast so be ready for a workout! We covered a ton and the time flew by. We passed several other group tours and it made me glad we had the privacy and flexibility of Sam’s private tour. He was able to modify based on our interests and even made time for us to stop off at a couple of shops. He left us on Victoria Street where he gave us the insiders tip of grabbing a butterbeer from the take away window at The Elephant House to enjoy while we waited in the line for Museum Context. Our feet are tired but our hearts are full. Thank you, Sam, for a wonderful day in Edinburgh!Written 17 August 2024
- melissacQ6460VH0 contributionsFun, free Harry Potter tour (tip your wizard!)This is a great tour with many fun tidbits of Harry Potter trivia. Highly recommend! “Wizard Stu” was knowledgeable and great fun!Written 2 June 2024
- staffy7380 contributionsExcellent TourAbsolutely superb. Our guide; Charlie, was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and really made the tour fun as well as making it interesting. Clearly suited to this kind of work and it showed and he deserved the contribution at the end which he was not at all pushy about. Would thoroughly recommend this.Written 1 June 2024
- maddyg4660 contributionsThe Harry Potter Experience Through Scotland’s Eyes! This tour was absolutely amazing. If you’re a potter nerd, a Rowling lover, or even an uninformed yet avid appreciator of the series, this tour will provide you with a whole new perspective towards the creation of a classic series that has had the world in the palm of its hand. I went with my family, a group of 12 in total, which is no small victory for a kind soul like Sam to have to entertain and inform. We all felt his passion and appreciated how detailed and vast his chasm had of knowledge was. He answered any and all questions I had with enthusiasm and curiosity. I felt personally attended to as well as clearly noting how well taken care of my family was. This trip is not an if, it is a must. You will not regret it. People like Sam are a perfect example of how greatly this series can touch a heart, and he surely touched all of ours. Thank you so much Sam!Written 18 May 2024
- gregsN6623QE0 contributionsThe Potter Tour you do not want to miss!My wife and I did this tour pre-Covid. But I just ran into the old pictures and smiled at what a special afternoon experience we had on the Potter Tour! It is always a treat to find others who love the Wizarding World, which is one reason why this particular tour should be on your to-do list. Another reason is the dedication and clever wit of the guide, Sam. Finally, the personal touches were quirky and adorable, and my favorite memories of our Scotland vacation.Written 1 October 2023
- kevinhN4940GY0 contributionsPotter magicSam is a potter fan like me and his knowledge is absolutely amazing, I had our granddaughter lily with us and she was absolutely in awe of Sam, he made it a lot of fun for the whole family and I think we will be doing the longer tour next time. There are many potter tours around but Sam is a true potter fan so look no further than Sam, 5 star tourWritten 17 September 2023
- robvK4436OY0 contributionsA truly unique and memorable tour with our guide SamWhat we loved about this tour was how fully Sam brought us into the world of JK Rowling while sharing the well known and lesser known places around Old Town. Sam is a wealth of information about not only the work of Rowling but also many other Scottish writers and the city itself. But he didn’t just feed us information as we explored Edinburgh for 5+ hours, he told stories, did magic tricks, and invited us into the experience through some role playing. He even surprised us with treats like chocolate frogs, sherbet lemons (Dumbledore’s favorites) and a stop for butter beer. A five hour tour isn’t for the week of heart or soft of foot but if you want a genuinely unique and memorable experience this tour is a must. My wife and I took our two teenage kids along with us and they had a great time. Having a few people up to speed on the series is very helpful and makes the time a lot more enjoyable and relatable. We were only in Edinburgh for five days but it was our favorite experience of our time in the city. Eight thumbs up!!!Written 14 July 2023
- rockinrobynr0 contributionsGreat way for Rowling fans to spend the day!Sam took us through the nooks and crannies of Edinburgh and Rowling’s life and writing process. He was very conversational, patient, and enthusiastic! Our 11 and 15 year olds had a great time!Written 2 July 2023
- naresar20160 contributionsFantastic Experience! This tour was absolutely fantastic! Besides getting to walk around Edinburgh to take in the sights, Sam put so much effort into this tour to learn about JK Rowling and her affiliation with Edinburgh. He paid so much attention to detail to make it feel so magical and to make you a part of it all. We even got sorted into our houses! We enjoyed every minute of it. It was truly captivating and insightful. I would 100% recommend this tour.Written 3 May 2023
- aliali5310 contributionsGreat Tour and Awesome Guide!Sam took us on a private tour for a couple hours in Edinburgh, just after arriving from the U.S. He was kind, patient, funny, and most importantly knew everything about Jk Rowling and Harry Potter. He kept my 9 year old engaged the whole time and was happy to go at our slower and jet lagged pace. Highly recommend!Written 2 May 2023
- Tara Z0 contributionsDon't miss a tour with Sam!Sam is simply the best. We did the full 8-hour tour, and it was very inexpensive, and he provided value beyond what I hoped. In the months leading up to our tour, Sam offered guidance for what to see and do on our own in Edinburgh, and we were able to plan a weeklong trip that was perfect. We were traveling around New Year's, so a lot of things were closed, and he researched the city and found everything that would be open and sent me more recommendations than we even had time for. It was wonderful. Then the actual tour itself! It start with Sam sorting us into houses, and it ended with a House Cup championship. I felt like we saw everything there was to see in Edinburgh. Sam took us to a museum where we were able to use some nifty little stools to rest our feet and we walked all over the city. We saw things that I've never seen or heard of before from any other tour company. He knows ALLLLLLLL the sights and nooks and crannies. Because we had a private tour, we were able to ask questions and Sam guided us through the city in a way we've never experienced before. We ate lunch together at the restaurant where JK wrote the first book, and we had a wizard duel at Tom Riddle's grave. It was just such a wonderful experience. I highly recommend Sam's tour to any Harry Potter enthusiast. We're super fans, despite the recent controversy, and we wanted to know everything. We left the tour feeling like we had done that. It was just so so so so good. If you have the stamina for an all day tour, definitely go for the 8 hour option. If you're not so sure about the time, go for a shorter one. But definitely go with Sam. He's by far the best in the city.Written 2 May 2023
- Liznherbchboys0 contributionsSam is the Chosen OneSam is an amazing encyclopedia of knowledge on all things Potter and JKR. We thoroughly enjoyed our walking tour with him. He makes it so fun and interactive with sorting, props, photo ops, quotes, and so much more. (My competitiveness couldn’t resist his trivia questions. I even might have managed to out-Potter him with my mention of the specific ward at St. Mungo’s where a certain former professor resided.) Sam’s tour took us to so many iconic Edinburgh locations that may have inspired JKR and also to the places where she wrote many of the HP books. Hard to choose, but if I had to pick my favorite part, it would have to be the visit to Greyfriars Kirkyard. I don’t want to spoil any surprises, so suffice it to say that Sam impressed me so much even after the tour ended. Thank you, Sam, for such a fun and memorable tour!Written 22 April 2023

This was probably one of the best things on our trip. This tour is for REAL FANS. Our guide would be able to tailor it to kids and adults of any level of Harry Potter but if you are looking for some real knowledge, trivia, and education about the books and movies, he’s the one to pick.
Our guide took us all around edinborough showing us things we would have missed just walking through. Any things Harry Potter related he knows. If you want to shop, eat, enjoy, he knows where to go.
He took us to the graveyard where there where many of the names were found for Harry Potter. We even spotted a new one. He had extensive knowledge of the history of the graveyard and also the Harry Potter history.
We also went to the national museum where we were able to see some of the inspiration for different pieces of the movie such as Ron’s Chess Pieces and the locks of Gringotts doors.
My husband is not as big a fan as me but the guide had him enjoying the extra knowledge he provided us.
He even took us to a shop that has the best unique items. There was artwork that was edinborough based and had a lot of Harry Potter elements. They had magnets, tea towels and cards. Upstairs there was even a little desk with Harry Potter decor. Even the basilisk and a dementor were hanging. There was the message from the heir of Slytherin as well.

Aye, dangerous shop that, below the shop floor they've got a chamber wall to wall with a battalion of petrified customers all lined up in neat rows. McRea, the owner, would be fine with this but their customer's wallets and purses get petrified too.
Bizarrely the statues shrink with time and every now and again they get sold off to Garden centres. Yep, that gnome in your neighbour's garden was originally a hapless Edinburgh tourist. Well done for surviving Christine!
Like most guides I attempt to talk to folks interest when I can, if you're with kids & you're not a Book reading fan then reserving a private tour, I offer 2 on Tripadvisor, allows me to abbreviate it - shorten the route so the tour keeps the casually interested attention.
Thanks for choosing me & writing 2 reviews! You're both the best. Happy New Year.

This magical tour has been totally envisaged and choreographed by Sam, a very talented, passionate and immersive tour guide. Be prepared to be drawn into the world of JK Rowling, a young struggling writer. Walk in her footsteps as Sam guides you through the streets, wynds and kirkyards of Edinburgh. Gain an insight into the struggles and setbacks Rowling endured, whilst she created a magical world of pure escapism. Her gift to the world. Sam’s knowledge of Rowling and the Potter books is beyond compare. His enthusiasm for all thing Potter shines through. He has an extensive knowledge of JK Rowling and has morphed this into a throughly enjoyable and informative walking tour. He effortlessly shares his knowledge of all things Potter and adapts his explanations to suit his audience’s questions, interests and age. Lots of secret surprises, magic and spells along the way! An absolute highlight of my trip to Edinburgh. Thank you Sam!

Cheers Steph, Scotland exits lockdown in a few weeks and Muggles are making plans so this is really timely, and sublimely comprehensive too. Merlin bless you!
Norbert would be hatching around this time, maybe a bit longer, so watch out for that, I've got something special planned, or possibly atrocious if you're a Beauxbaton.
☞ Watch for a fatigued owl.
For Christmas, I acquired some potions robes, greasy hair & a sneery voice. I've yet to try them on, but knuckles-touch, I'm vibrating to start insulting everybody.
Maybe start amassing a feast of dead mice, Pigwidgeon's going to be awfully tired.

Sam was fantastically knowledgeable and passionate about the works of JK Rowling - it was very interesting to understand the parallels between her life and writings, which give further subsequent context to the stories. The tour had a great blend of interactivity and theatrics, and we felt fully-indoctrinated into the fictional world by then end. Highly recommended, but do wear sensible footwear as it's over a fair distance through the afternoon!

Yes, flat-soled, waterproof footwear is best. I've had people walk off in Autumn drizzle because their canvas shoes became waterlogged.
Some authors dislike literary theorists drawing connections between their journey and features of their works, but Rowling has largely volunteered it herself! Although the connections she draws between the Potterverse and Edinburgh tend to be more in a spiritual nature.
Cheers Matthew for the cheery, thoughtful review & *photo*, you do me proud!

Sam was such a lovely guide, really making us feel welcome and at home. On the tour, where he showed us around a good chunk of the city, he not only told us lots of interesting Harry Potter and JK Rowling related stories, he also gave us some insight into some of Edinburg’s histories and tales as well. He was super knowledgable on everything Harry Potter and was able to answer all our questions, and even had in depth explanations of how some of the characters, events and places in Harry Potter were inspired by real life people and stories. Sam really went the extra mile to make it a fun and immersive experience, with some props and activities to really make it feel like a Harry Potter tour!

Yes the people in Rowling's life are undoubtedly more important than our locations. Geography is just backdrop, characters move around the stage.
I'm glad it was fun, I imagine that's a fear for a 4 hour tour. If you combine my 8 hour tour with my 4 hour Harry Potter cycle tour, then that's 12 hours. 24 hours would be a true marathon, I'd probably have to talk about Rowling's nail clippings or something... One can dream.
I wish you McGonagall's fist of iron and Hagrid's glowing heart.

Sam is a hugely likeable, energetic guy who knows his stuff. It was quite long for a cold day and there was a lot of information to take in, but Sam breaks it up with magic tricks and time to sit down, plus time indoors (which helped us thaw out). What he doesn't know isn't worth knowing about Potter and JK Rowling, and we appreciated being able to enjoy parts of Edinburgh we may never have seen. I'd say this is a fantastic tour for people who are deeply into Harry Potter.

2 reviews! Thankyou Lisa. Send friends. I need reviews. **KIND ONES**, like this. Perfecto.
Yes, the establishment put Rowling on a pedestal, we've given her 5 honourary degrees, Harvard has given her another, France has knighted her, The Queen made her Queen's consort, the first woman to be made so I think.
However I don't think she has a chocolate frog card of her own yet. So... still someway to go. Keep up the scribbling!
We want to make Rowling shine as a role model, I strive to serve that.
Yes your second visit, I'm glad there was still something to discover, the Fringe venues take you to some of the less travelled parts by locals anyway. I've been thinking about putting in the portrait gallery over winter because it's fabulous, I just don't have enough story yet.
I need Alexander McCall Smith and Rowling to write a book together or something. Maybe Newt Scamander can visit Mma Precious Ramotswe in Botswanna and they can solve some No.1 Ladies shenanigans together, leaving a trail of beastly melee.
Very happy you chose me, 3.5 hours in the cold, Steve probably thinks you're a lunatic. Don't forget to defrost your broom bristles prior to flights.

I highly recommend this Harry Potter walking tour. Sam is so interesting, warm, personable and engaging. His passion for all things Potter is infectious. He shared so many fascinating insights and kept the tour very pacey. He really went the extra mile to ensure that this was a thoroughly memorable morning - with so many thoughtful, interactive touches that really brought the whole experience to life.

I’ve chosen this tour over others because it seemed to be more in-depth and it was way more than I expected! Sam has an encyclopaedic knowledge about Harry Potter, JK’s life in Edinburgh and the history of the city as well.
It’s a long tour, but on every corner lies another very interesting information about one of the topics above which makes the 4 hours fly by.
Sam also make sure we have some fun suprises along the way until the very end, which enhances even more this experience.
I definitely recommend it for all Potterheads that come to Edinburgh!

Cheers Natalia. It's a lot of talking, a lot, lot, lot of me talking. And then some more of me talking. I think it could be more varied, for the kids who came to Hogwarts via the movies, but I deeply appreciate the appreciation for my effort! Very happy you chose me Natalia 💞

The tour was a fantastic insight into JK Rowling and the writing of the Harry Potter books. This tour took us round the city of Edinburgh exploring where the books were written along with the inspirations taken from the city, including the graveyard and the names taken from the grave stones into the books. Our 3 children loved the tour along with some magic tricks and a chocolate frog each. All in all a great tour for families

Cheers David, that means the world & a maybe half-decent season too, I'm so pleased you found me. It was first written as the most adult I could make it, so it's pleasing whenever it plays well with families, broad minded liberal parents help!
Your kids were total experts, it was interesting being out-Pottered, and well done with spotting a new name in the Kirkyard, that was extraordinary 🎖️

Sam Stratford was amazing. His tour was highly researched and scripted, and it was excellent. He was engaging, asked questions, and was receptive to our theories as to why or what JK Rowling found inspirational. After the first 20 minutes things settled down into a nice rhythm.
Sam ran us all around the Royal Mile area, sometimes literally... there were times we were running to catch up - there was so much to see! What s a great way to see the city and learn of its history.
This tour was great fun and I think Sam had a good time too. We are totally re-reading the books!

🙌 That's interesting! Yes, I'm not the world's greatest conversationalist, Gilderoy Lockhart would run circles around me 😵💫
It might be better to have a free-ranging conversation with a guide where folk discover what most interests them. I do attempt it but ultimately Rowling's journey has so many lessons that I'd be sore to miss 😩
I decided that if I was to be didactic, organising my ideas to compactly demonstrate Rowling's mindsets keeps my verbiage pithier, so hopefully interesting. Also helps pack core ideas and stories of interest into my memory 💾
However didactic is seldom equated with fun. And the books are HUGELY fun. So that is a worthy, alternative approach 🤪
RE running: Yes I had some Germans on the tour who said that I reminded them of Percy Weasley 🧐, prefect of Gryffindor, winding the new intake through the labyrinthian corridors saying 'Keep up [chaps] Keep up' 😮💨
Thanks so much for the review Heather, glad it wasn't too dreadful. May your broomstick cut headwinds like a wand through Pixie butter 🧈

We thoroughly enjoyed the tour led by the magical and fabulous Sam. Our 16 year old daughter and her two parents will remember this journey of Harry Potter, JK Rowling, and Scotland for the rest of their lives. We will be sure to share the story of the adventure to their grand kids and great grand kids for generations to come. We experienced the magic of JK Rowling's creative mind through the eyes of Sam and his encyclopedic knowledge of Harry Potter. We highly recommend brushing up on your references of Harry Potter, you will be tested. We highly, highly, highly recommend Sam for your next visit to the magical city of Edinburgh. May all of your dreams come true!
