    A fabulous Harry Potter tour!
What an amazing experience! I booked the tour with my 7 year old daughter. Even though I didn’t know much about Harry Potter my daughter is a fan I thoroughly enjoyed the entire tour. It covers the beautiful magical Edinburgh and Sam is a delight to head the tour. Sam was amazing and so well informed. He answered all of my daughter’s questions and kept her so engaged. I highly recommend this tour for all ages. Will definitely book it again when in Edinburgh again!

    Most Knowledgable Tour Guide Ever!
Sam was an incredible guide! He was insanely knowledgeable and can easily customize the tour to the interests of the group. He added in fun things like costumes and even had gold coins to win the House Cup! He made sure to give you breaks to sit since it is a lot of walking but you get to go all over Edinburgh and see things you may not have even known were there! 20/10 I cannot recommend this tour but mainly Sam enough! He even stopped and bought us all ice cream which was incredibly kind and not needed!

The best way to explore Edinburgh
We were met by wizard Sam and the magic began. His knowledge, his wit and his story telling keeps you absolutely captivated and time seems to disappear! It was wonderful to be part of a small personalised tour and to see so much behind the scenes of Edinburgh, it is all the little things that made the day so special!! Huge thank you, even the not so Harry Potter fan amongst us had a great day and we captured some fabulous photo’s and have a day of adventure planned visiting all Sam’s recommendations. Went above and beyond would Highly recommend!!

Highly Recommended - Sam is Fantastic, he knows his Potter, This Tour is a MUST DO
We laughed, we cried, we were entertained and got a fantastic tour of Edinburgh. Sam is one of the most dedicated wizard guides I have ever met. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of HP and Edinburgh and is in his element sharing it. This is THE ONLY HP EDINBURGH tour to consider.

    Good tour.
Our guide was well aquainted with jk history and the town. Keep in mind that the english is different and our guide spike 100mph so it was a bit hard to understand everything. The kids enjoyed

Great way for Rowling fans to spend the day!
Sam took us through the nooks and crannies of Edinburgh and Rowling’s life and writing process. He was very conversational, patient, and enthusiastic! Our 11 and 15 year olds had a great time!

Interesting, very detailed tour which makes even hard core fans happy
Very intersting tour with a knowledgeable and super nice guide. I was afraid that 4 hours is too long but it felt much shorter. Sometimes he talked a bit too fast for me as non native speaker, but adapted as soon as I mentioned it. A loooot of information and very nice emails with additional information afterwards from time to time. We enjoyed it!

    It was good
It was a cool guided tour. Went a bit fast with the words some times, but generally I understood most of it. Was hard from time to time to understand the meaning behind some of the locations we were at, and sometimes referencing to other series like marvel and star wars

Very rushed and hard to understand
The tour was very rushed and long, he spoke very fast and with an accent, so it was quite hard to understand as a foreigner, even though we usually don’t have any problems understand english - so we ended up leaving the tour before it ended. But we went to see some different parts of the city, we probably wouldn’t have seen without being on the tour.

    Great Tour and Awesome Guide!
Sam took us on a private tour for a couple hours in Edinburgh, just after arriving from the U.S. He was kind, patient, funny, and most importantly knew everything about Jk Rowling and Harry Potter. He kept my 9 year old engaged the whole time and was happy to go at our slower and jet lagged pace. Highly recommend!

Don't miss a tour with Sam!
Sam is simply the best. We did the full 8-hour tour, and it was very inexpensive, and he provided value beyond what I hoped. In the months leading up to our tour, Sam offered guidance for what to see and do on our own in Edinburgh, and we were able to plan a weeklong trip that was perfect. We were traveling around New Year's, so a lot of things were closed, and he researched the city and found everything that would be open and sent me more recommendations than we even had time for. It was wonderful. Then the actual tour itself! It start with Sam sorting us into houses, and it ended with a House Cup championship. I felt like we saw everything there was to see in Edinburgh. Sam took us to a museum where we were able to use some nifty little stools to rest our feet and we walked all over the city. We saw things that I've never seen or heard of before from any other tour company. He knows ALLLLLLLL the sights and nooks and crannies. Because we had a private tour, we were able to ask questions and Sam guided us through the city in a way we've never experienced before. We ate lunch together at the restaurant where JK wrote the first book, and we had a wizard duel at Tom Riddle's grave. It was just such a wonderful experience. I highly recommend Sam's tour to any Harry Potter enthusiast. We're super fans, despite the recent controversy, and we wanted to know everything. We left the tour feeling like we had done that. It was just so so so so good. If you have the stamina for an all day tour, definitely go for the 8 hour option. If you're not so sure about the time, go for a shorter one. But definitely go with Sam. He's by far the best in the city.

    Sam is the Chosen One
Sam is an amazing encyclopedia of knowledge on all things Potter and JKR. We thoroughly enjoyed our walking tour with him. He makes it so fun and interactive with sorting, props, photo ops, quotes, and so much more. (My competitiveness couldn’t resist his trivia questions. I even might have managed to out-Potter him with my mention of the specific ward at St. Mungo’s where a certain former professor resided.) Sam’s tour took us to so many iconic Edinburgh locations that may have inspired JKR and also to the places where she wrote many of the HP books. Hard to choose, but if I had to pick my favorite part, it would have to be the visit to Greyfriars Kirkyard. I don’t want to spoil any surprises, so suffice it to say that Sam impressed me so much even after the tour ended. Thank you, Sam, for such a fun and memorable tour!

My wife and I did this tour pre-Covid. But I just ran into the old pictures and smiled at what a special afternoon experience we had on the Potter Tour! It is always a treat to find others who love the Wizarding World, which is one reason why this particular tour should be on your to-do list. Another reason is the dedication and clever wit of the guide, Sam. Finally, the personal touches were quirky and adorable, and my favorite memories of our Scotland vacation.

My daughter and I went to Edinburgh this summer and she is a BIG Harry Potter fan. In looking at things to do on Trip Advisor I stumbled across Harry Potter tours. I did a lot of research looking at the various tours and reading reviews. I was so fortunate to find the tours that Sam Stratford does. I began corresponding with him on email to arrange for the tour. I have to admit I did not read the books and although I had heard a lot about it from my daughter and saw some of the movies, it was my daughter who was the fan. Sam was very responsive and so "Harry Potter" entertaining that I smiled with every correspondence. Sam made the tour very interactive and fun for both of us. In addition to learning about JK Rowling and Harry Potter, we made a visit to the Edinburgh Parliament building which we enjoyed, but Sam treated us to some amazing whiskey ice cream (a local favorite).
We had a great, fun time with Sam and I would highly recommend his tours!

Thanks, Laurel I'm glad it keeps less impassioned folk engaged - touch wood. The ice cream police box closed for winter yesterday, oh my heart bleeds. But they gave everyone free ice cream on their last day, Cool-as! Thanks for taking the time to write such a thorough review, I really appreciate it. x Sam.

Cheers Kevin. The worry with preteens is my tours are such a long time listening they'll glaze over. Glad that wasn't the case. There are so many things to do in Edinburgh and the cost of accommodation is so much, it really pleases me when my tour is considered worthy. Thanks, Kevin and Alison and Lily and coven. I'd wish you McGonagall's fist of iron & Hagrid's glowing heart 💖 But you already have it. So I'll wish you his larder instead. Pumpkins the size of Lily! x Sam

Cheers, I'm so pleased. The length of that tour, all my tours really, is demanding for pre-teens, basically a near non-stop verbal novella in 5½ hours, so I'm gladdened it's remembered happily. You were good sports too. I wish you McGonagall's fists of iron and Hagrid's glowing heart. And immune system... pretty indestructible I'd say. x Sam

My complete Potterhead daughter and I attended this Harry Potter tour in Edinburgh as a reward for hard work on her 11+ exams. I cannot say enough about how much time and effort Sam puts into bringing the books to life, and really showing how JK Rowling drew inspiration from the sights, sounds and history of Edinburgh. I found the experience really inspiring and we learned a tremendous amount, not just about Harry Potter but about Edinburgh's history. Highly recommend!

Ah thanks Rachel, that's really sweet of you. Yes it's been a privellege to have customers like you, trying to give their charge the best experience. I've had some Dutch ones too, a Hermione last weekend. Occassionally I get the parents who try and lean into their kids interest before they've finished the books, and my heart grieves, the tour has so many spoilers and I'm too dunder-headed to catch them all, or many, or any. Arrg. So far as 'beyond Potter' activities go, visiting Edinburgh should be the capstone experience, so I stick with the non-commercial length, in fact make it longer & ever more non-commerical, passionate Potterheads are the folk it's most fun to serve. Yes Rowling has written a few inspirational things and done more, she's been called on to be a role model and rises to it often, in so many different fields. So I try to include that. Most likely having paid more tax than any other individual in British history she's also keeping our poor abused politicians out off the doghouse (their doghouses are probably built from iPads mind). Thanks for writing such a heartening review Rachel. If I ever do leaflets again, I'll include your review; I'm gratified you chose me, you are a blessing. May your Patronus never dim and your potions always shimmer X Sam.

Sam was AMAZING! We did the tour with kids and adults, and he was great for both. His knowledge of JK Rowling is phenomenal. His creativity with the kids is astounding. He did speak a bit fast, but more to get in all the information and answer all of the questions we asked. The sorting hat at the beginning was great too! Kids were ages 4-12, and they all loved it!!!!! I recommend this tour to anyone who is a Harry Potter fan!!!!!

Thankyou Smuty. I'm so pleased, it always irked me that Harry Potter was classified kids books, Rowling herself said she never wrote down to them you just can't have se-x near unicorns because that would be tacky. So I wrote a more adult tour, addressing some of the weightier topics. I'm gladdened that it keeps kids engaged. Rowling said the books helped kids "try on other people's ideas... send their minds where their bodies are not yet mature enough to go." I'll pass your compliment along to the hat. Put it on the radiator so it can enjoy a good toast. It'll be overjoyed. Over summer it almost put one 5 year old in tears (wrong house apparently). The hat got packed away to the bottom of my freezer. That'll teach it for trying to build resilience. Lousy hat. Thanks for a wonderfully enthused review, x Sam

I got this tour as a gift for my sister and two of her friends for her birthday. They are all Harry Potter mad and know every detail of the books and films. It was a challenge that Sam accepted to treat the girls to a fact filled tour that was fun and full of laughs along the way. My sister loved the tour and had such a good time they want to go back and do it all over again! They were all out facted by Sam who’s knowledge was amazing.
If you are Harry Potter mad or just someone who is looking to have a fun tour in Edinburgh then I highly recommend this tour.
Thank you Sam for making sure my sisters birthday present was so special and one to remember!

Oh you're welcome, I'm so pleased it paid off. I think unusual experiences make great gifts, do something different and add a bit of texture to your memories so it doesn't all fly by. Your sister doesn't have the Bellatrix of siblings. May your flick and swish always give you bliss x Sam.

Hey Jacqueline, It was interesting having you guys on the tour, my parents live not forever from you, so was novel to have the accents of that world back in my own. 'Accommodated'! It was a pleasure. Thanks for the kind review, I'm very happy you went to the bother of reaching out for a tour you could fit in. If I remember right the tour ended in classic Potter style - Harry seized the Snitch! It was a very nice thing to do for him I think. x Sam.

Thanks Andrew, I had an author - professor bring her university class on the tour, and she was very keen on contextualising so I am keen on that, especially when it connects to British folklore. I'm expecting the Complete Potter to be 7 hours next year! Plans plans plans. x Sam.
