Caroline was our wonderful tour guide and she set the bar high. Energetic and super fun we had the best time with her. She is very knowledge about all things Potter as well as the city itself. We would highly recommend her and The Potter Trail!

    Excellent,better than expected
Excellent tour and guide, my daughter really enjoyed the experience and it revived a love for Harry Potter books. We really appreciate Becky. FYI - The Potter trail administration come across a little aggressive regarding the payment, when it it is advertised as a free activity. Perhaps they should ask for a small donation in an envelope,to avoid embarrassment for those who cannot afford to give as mush stated on the website,as most families need free activities on holidays.

    Great fun!
Great Fun!! Our guide Caroline was extremely engaging and welcoming. Made all of us feel inclusive and very excited to know more about JK Rowling and HP. Her rendition of McGonagall’s poem using Horace Slughorn’s accent was fantastic and hilarious! We loved every minute of her tour!

    Wish I'd done this sooner!
Even though I've been to Edinburgh at least a dozen times before, this was my first time on the Potter Trail, and all I can say is I wish I'd done it sooner! Admittedly, I had seen the tours going around the city once or twice before and assumed it was too cheesy for me; I'm so glad I didn't let that deter me any longer! Our guide, Mel, did a truly incredible job of leading a group that ranged in age by at least 50 years, making it interesting and informational for the adults while also engaging and fun for the kids. I learned so much on this tour, and I appreciated Mel's balance of including Potter information that we definitely know, that we speculate about, and that might not have been confirmed but seems absolutely connected. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone at all!

Amazing experience with the very witchy Christine.
We had an amazing experience with the very witchy Christine from Slytherin. The tour was captivating and interactive. Christine was knowledgeable and an amazing storyteller. We're really glad we got to be a part of it. A definite must-do if you're visiting Edinburgh wether you're a Potterhead or not.

    Go Ravenclaw!
We had a wonderful time, this was a sweet way to get acquainted with Edinburgh Old Town on our first day in Edinburgh. Mel was a wonderful tour guide and we really appreciated the mix of Harry Potter information and trivia with actual history of Scotland. And Ravenclaw won! Go Ravenclaw!

    Fun and engaging tour!
We had such a fun time! Roisin was our guide for a group tour and she was fantastic! She was very knowledgeable and shared many interesting tidbits and back stories of the Harry Potter world. She kept it fun and engaging the entire time for myself and my 17yo, 22yo, and 26yo "kids." She even taught us a bit of magic! :D I highly recommend!

You must do the Potters trail free tour!
This tour was fantastic. Our guide was full of so much great knowledge. I learned so many new fun things about how JK Rowling was inspired to write the Harry Potter series. I would highly recommend this free tour for anyone who has enjoyed the Harry Potter series. Do not pay for the other tours. We walked by several other tours and their guides looked very unenthusiastic. Our tour guide was very enthusiastic without being overwhelming.

Highly recommend this tour to anyone!! Charlie was FANTASTIC!!!!
Charlie was an amazing tour guide!! He was so knowledgeable, humorous, and exciting! He certainly knows how to keep the HP magic alive! It was easy to pay attention to his wonderful stories and he even gave out House Points to us which made it more fun! To top it off, at the end of the tour, he helped my boyfriend and I find the nearest toilets and even walked us to them to make sure we found them okay. Talk about a nice guy!!

Fun and informative free Harry Potter tour in Edinburgh
Charlie was an excellent storyteller who made this tour entertaining and informative. I am a Harry Potter fan and so is my 9 year old daughter. We throughly enjoyed the tour and the fun spells/house points game. The history of JKRowling’s journey as a writer writing the Potter series was fascinating. I would do this tour again if I would return to Edinburgh.

I attended this tour with my Potter obsessed partner last week.
Alex guided us around some of the key locations relating to the creation and inspiration of the Potter series (from what I could gather, as I say I’m not a fan) and complimented this with lots of Potter facts.
Alex was great fun and stimulated the group with his animated humour and Potter ‘quiz’ type questions throughout.
As I said, I’m not even a Potter fan and enjoyed it hugely.
The only thing that did annoy me was the few tightwad group members who didn’t make a donation at the end and scurried off. Yes it is a free tour, but let’s face it, if you have made it it Edinburgh as a tourist, you can spare a few quid for an hour and a half of great entertainment!!??? (I’m in no way affiliated to the tour by the way).
If the other guides are like Alex then they obviously love all things Potter and love what they do.

We booked the free to join Potter Trail on Sunday 9th August 2020 and Alex was our guide. He was a brilliant guide. The tour itself was informative and engaging and not too much walking for our 6 and 8 year olds. The kids loved it as Alex made it fun, such as giving out Hogwarts house points for correct answers to his questions. There are some fascinating J.K. Rowling and Harry Potter facts associated with Edinburgh that even the most hardcore fans might not know about. We would definitely recommend the tour and worth at least £15 - £20 per person.

So you thought you knew everything about Harry Potter? So did we... until we did this tour. I'd be surprised if anyone leaves this tour having learned nothing.
It is intriguing & superbly delivered. Our guide (Gemma) was very knowledgeable and made this a thoroughly enjoyable tour for Potter fans of all ages.
The tour is massively popular (we were surprised at how many people turned up), which may be in part due to the fact that there's no official charge (donations are optional). This was one of the best tours we've done & outstripped most of the expensive tours we've been on. For that reason, and the fact that the guides are all university students (who are doing something positive with their lives, whilst also trying to pay their way), we "donated" what we thought it would have cost commercially. Great effort and delivery, by a very dedicated team.

The Potter trail is a great experience for Potter fans who want to know how the city of Edinburgh inspired JK Rowling. With this tour, you'll be taken to multiple locations and be provided with a wealth of Potter trivia. I enjoyed the idea that JK Rowling most likely walked around these places and found inspiration for things like character names and location descriptions.
You'll find it's not just the books that take from Edinburgh, but also the movies! Our tour guide, Alex, was brimming with energy and charisma. He read the crowd and made the right jokes and, if asked, would spout information and detail with such vigor and enthusiasm. You can tell he's a big fan.

In fact, I think this is probably what separates this tour from others. Alex, and presumably every other tour guide under this company, celebrate what Edinburgh did for the books but they also aren't afraid to debunk the misconceptions that are attributed to the relationship between the books and the city.

If I had to nit pick, I only had one issue with one of the locations. We were pointed towards a famous cafe (not the Elephant room) and told this incredible wealth of information. But we never actually walked there, instead, we just stared at it at an obscured view about 200m away. Not a real issue, of course, because we visited it straight after the tour was done.

The tour is free, but you are expected to tip, I paid £15 and felt it was totally worth it.

I would 100% recommend and, if you get Alex, you're in for a treat.

Highly recommend this tour. Yes, you are escorted by a guide dressed as a wizard but it’s very much tongue in cheek, witty and entertaining. Lots of JK Rowling and Potter facts which were very interesting without being dull, even for non-Potter fans. It’s not a long distance to walk so very manageable. The tour is genuinely free but you would be hard pressed and mean to deny these guides some form of payment for their efforts, which they handle very well - not at all pushy. We had Wizard Will who was excellent and managed to zip through everything with plenty of jokes and fun. Even my teens were impressed and as anyone with teens knows they’re a tough audience to please - especially on a walking tour.

We were in Edinburgh for Hogmanay and joined Sam’s group for the Potter Trail. .
Sam managed a very large group of tourists and Potter fans around the area with a level of enthusiasm that was impressive. He shared facts, fun and a new take on city landmarks all while managing us all on busy streets, teaching us spells and dishing out (and taking away) house points.
Family recommended this tour to us and we weren’t disappointed.

This tour was absolutely amazing. Our tour guide Charlie was so engaging and enthusiastic. He clearly has a passion for Harry Potter and it shone through during the whole 90 mins we were on the tour. The facts were so interesting and it was very interactive. I had the best time as a birthday surprise treat and recommend this to any Potter fan xx

Another five star review for The Potter Trail and Sam (Go! Go! Gryffindor!) We were captivated by his theatrics from his introduction to his farewell. We collected wands from the sorting hat and swished and flicked our way alongside the same buildings/landscape that inspired JKR in writing the series.

After guiding us through Greyfriars Kirkyard, pointing out names found in the books, he led us through the city, sharing details, asking questions, and awarding house points.

The tour was excellent. Sam was easily heard by everyone in the group of about 20. His jokes were great and really kept the tour moving. Comparing how to keep the Death Eater and last girlfriend away forever was hysterical! 😆 You'll just have to go on the tour to find out what I'm talking about.

So. Very. Good. All HP fans must go while in Edinburgh.

We set up a virtual tour from the US for a group of 10 girls (ages 11-13). Every one of them absolutely loved it. Charlie (our guide) was great, very entertaining and knowledgeable and he held their attention for the full hour. I highly recommend this for any Harry Potter fans out there, you will be educated and amazed with the information presented. Three cheers for Charlie, well done sir.

I went to the tour with high expectations as my girlfriend had already done a similar tour on a different trip previously where she had paid. I can honestly say the tour exceeded all our expectations and Charlie, our tour guide, was brilliant. He was funny, informative and spoke with such enthusiasm it genuinely made everyone interested in the experience. If you like Harry Potter or are merely interested in some of the historical spots around Edinburgh then I cannot recommend this highly enough, especially since it’s free.
Well worth the experience.
