About
What better way to acquaint yourself with the layout of Edinburgh's medieval Old Town than a private tour with your own experienced guide.
In 3 hours your guide will cover all of the highlights of the Old Town as well as the hidden gems that the unwary visitor misses.
Your guide will scratch under the surface of each location helping the visitor to understand why the city has such a gruesome history. Although many people think it is just about the Castle, it is much more than that. It is about the people who lived and died in the Old Town.
You will hear stories of body-snatchers, of witches and the religious zealots that sent them to their deaths. We will explain how Scotland went from independent country to becoming part of the United Kingdom and its impact on Edinburgh
The 18th century was a period that saw the rebirth of Edinburgh through learning and education. This period became known as the Scottish Enlightenment. Come on this tour to be entertained and enlightened.

About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Matt M0 contributionsWorth every penny! Book Andy.Andy knows his native city and knows how to show it off. It was truly a fun and informative deep dive into Edinburgh’s old and new towns. Andy’s passion for his hometown comes through and he tailors the tour to your specific requests, or you can just let him guide you. And for us older folks, in a city with some very steep hills, a welcome break from a walking tour. Highly recommend.Written 1 December 2024
- 820_PaulaL0 contributionsTime well spent in ScotlandI just returned from a week in Scotland, and 5 days total with Andy of Edinburgh Cab Tours. Hiring a local is truly the best way to see a new country. Leaving the hustling city of Edinburgh behind, we ventured as far as the Isle of Skye, then through Inverness, making our return trip to the capital city via different routes, then down to the borders on another leg of our journey. We all know we cannot plan a vacation around the weather, and Scotland's skies are notoriously moody, but we made the best of it and had a truly wonderful time. Andy is professional, always on time, friendly, helpful, flexible, and his knowledge of Scottish history, geography, and culture is top-notch. I learned so much, saw so many interesting places, ate good food, and came home with a new appreciation for a country I knew little about prior to this trip. I'd recommend Edinburgh Cab Tours without hesitation, and will sing their praises to anyone who asks.Written 19 October 2024
- 82willn0 contributionsWhat an enjoyable time!We had the most enjoyable time with Andy. He was a wealth of information about each of the places we traveled to and brought us as close to points of interest as you could get in a vehicle, which was exemplary, as one in our party is handicapped. He was very entertaining and engaging as we explored Edinburgh and St. Andrew’s. We definitely recommend booking, and will share this contact info with our friends, as they travel to Scotland.Written 27 September 2024
- newtOhio0 contributionsShore excursion with Edinburgh Cab ToursWe came to Edinburgh via cruise ship in early September. After researching a lot of private companies, we reached out to Edinburgh Cab Tours based on positive reviews and itinerary. So glad we did. In the months leading up to our visit, we communicated extensively with Andy, the boss. He offered detailed travel advice. For example, he suggested we shelve our original plan to split time between Edinburgh and St. Andrews, saying it would result in a whirlwind tour that would leave us dissatisfied. We opted for a leisurely journey to St. Andrews that included stops at two quaint fishing villages. Our day with Andy was an absolute joy. He was extremely knowledgeable and gave us plenty of time to explore St. Andrews — the legendary golf courses, the university, the cathedral. His lunch recommendation was spot on and he offered to take many group photos. Most importantly, he was fun, a pleasure to talk to and answered all our questions — even the daft ones. He picked us promptly at the port and returned us to the ship with time to spare. Our travel group agreed the time spent with Andy was a highlight of the cruise. Highest recommendation! Thanks, Andy.Written 24 September 2024
- O4242PVstevenb0 contributionsCustom Tour Edinburgh to GlasgowAndy led the four of us on a custom tour from Edinburgh to Glasgow with stops at Stirling Castle, Deanston Distillery, and a walk up Conic Hill. Andy is an excellent tour guide and his deep knowledge kept us entertained for the entire trip. I highly recommend him for any of the tours he offers.Written 25 July 2024
- sisaltiger0 contributionsPrivate tour of EdinburghAndy gave us an amazing tour of Edinburgh. We saw all the important spots and his knowledge of the history was amazing! I definitely would recommend! I learned so much during the tour! As we were coming in on a cruise, he picked us at the ship and brought us back.Written 13 June 2024
- Stuart P0 contributionsA must-do in Edinburgh!Andy is a brilliant tour guide. Extremely knowledgeable about Edinburgh, right down to having answers to left of centre questions about the city. The tour was very well structured, and gives a good sense of the history behind Edinburgh; contemporary Edinburgh; and was full of little tidbits we had no idea about. Andy himself is a delightful guy, well presented and professional. You would struggle to find a better, more comprehensive private tour than this. Wholeheartedly recommended.Written 29 May 2024
- markhY366HQ0 contributionsYou don’t want to miss out on this fabulous tour! What a great way to spend a day seeing the sights and learning lots of historical facts! Andy was a fantastic tour guide and very knowledgeable. He knows just where to go so you get a feel of real immersion into Scotland’s and Edinburgh’s story when Andy explains it. We would definitely recommend him for an inviting and fun tour of the city while visiting Edinburgh, ScotlandWritten 13 May 2024
- 281eugenea0 contributionsPerfect tour for my wife's first visit to Scotland! My wife and I selected Edinburgh Cab Tours based on a recommendation from a friend. We could not have been more pleased with both our private day tour as well as airport transfers (including transfer with city center tour). Andy was extremely friendly and knowledgeable and thoughtfully prepared a custom tour for us based on points of interest we wanted to see and the type of experiences we were looking to have. At each stop, he had information prepared to show us regarding historical pictures and maps and the like to enhance the experience of what we were viewing. We were picked up promptly both at the airport and also at our AirBnB. Although this tour was only my wife and I, Andy's vehicles are large and comfortable for groups and he has water/snacks onboard for the comfort of the passengers. For me it is worth a mention that Andy is not only a safe driver, but also very smooth. I feel the effects of motion-sickness easily and driving style has a big impact. I can assure you that everything was smooth and not once did I feel the effects of my motion-sickness. Each stop was well thought out regarding length of visit as well as stops for lunch. Andy also prepared several alternate choices for stops and lunch venues so that we could decide on the day how we wanted to proceed without interrupting the flow of the tour. At the end of our tour on the way to drop us back at our AirBnB, Andy was able to recommend several restaurants and also reliable tourist shops in the city center so that we could have a nice meal and find quality souvenirs at reasonable prices. Overall, I would highly recommend Andy and Edinburgh Cab Tours for your visit to Edinburgh and surrounding areas. I will definitely reach out to Andy again for my next trip as well as encourage friends visiting Scotland to consider him for a custom tour at very reasonable prices.Written 6 May 2024

His knowledge of the city history and guidance through many of the tourist highpoints was even better than we had hoped for. He also gave many tips on spots to visit on the remainder of our time in Edinburgh. Truly enjoyed our time with Andy!Written 5 May 2024
- USAFTraveler20140 contributionsWonderful Day Trip from EdinburghAndy tailored a tour at our request to experience the Falkirk Wheel and the Kelpies. We thoroughly enjoyed our day, and appreciated seeing some uniquely Scottish engineering and artistic marvels. We also appreciated the additional sites Andy shared with us in Edinburgh. His knowledge, commentary, and companionship were most delightful. Edinburgh Cab Tours also provided airport transfers for our visit. The transfers were seamless; our thanks to Allan for taking the stress out of our journey!Written 15 April 2024
- 324beauw0 contributionsVast and rich with history and sights.100/100 great experience and highly recommended. We had the pleasure of riding with Andy and he’s pure breed local and passionate about Edinburghs rich culture. Andys knowledge of lore and history is vast and exciting. Our tour was an especially rainy day so we were lucky to have a comfortable and dry vehicle to go exploring with - otherwise we would have never been able to see so much in such a short time.Written 4 April 2024
- TISSUEHANKIE0 contributionsSuperb reliable service - Just exceptional !! Totally recommendI cannot recommend this company highly enough ! We arranged to be collected from Edinburgh airport and as the flight was due to arrive before we could check in, Andy advised us he would arrange to guide us around Edinburgh on a mini tour . As soon as we landed he had instructed us to just call him after we had gone outside and let him know which lane we were in. This is actually such a good system as we went straight to lane one and he was there within a minute. He took our luggage for us and then informed us he would take us over to Queensferry to see the three bridges and have a nice coffee in the restaurant overlooking the sea. We then were given a whistlestop 2 hour tour and saw all the sights including JK Rowling Harry Potter Inspired sites including Princess Street ( Diagon Alley ) and wand shop ! Greyfriars Cemetery , the boarding schools and more. We also went to the top of Nelson Monument , Calton Hill which overlooked at all the main tourist sites and much more. Andy was immaculately turned out and presented, very informative and knowledgeable and made us feel extremely welcomed and special. If you are looking to book someone who is reliable, friendly and will tailor make any itinerary you need do not hesitate to book this man ! Highly recommended and a massive thank you from Ann & SueWritten 18 March 2024

We enjoyed a few tours with Andy from Edinburgh Cab Tours including a walking tour of Old Town, Stirling Castle and the Kelpies. Throughout each tour, Andy was friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable, sharing a wealth of history and local lore. He also shared with us a few of the Outlander filming locations which was fun. We were never rushed and Andy ensured that we had a wonderful experience on each tour. We would give him our highest recommendation.

Adam was our guide. He crammed a lot of information into the tour in an interesting, informative and entertaining way. He began with a fast history lesson of Scotland and then we began our walk around Edinburgh’s old town. Stopping to look at the outside of St Giles Cathedral and hear about its foundations. Next stop was a gruesome monument where thieves were discouraged. He went onto show us some key motivating sites for JK Rowling’s Harry Potter books. There were very few dry eyes after Adam relayed the story of Bobby the Greyfriars dog. An excellent tour and highly recommended
