    Stop: 90 minutes
Immerse yourself in the Paris of the middle ages on a 1.5hr walking tour of Île de la Cité with an expert historian guide. Founded on a river crossing by a pagan tribe, this settlement became a global leader by trying out a range of dramatic forms of rule over the course of hundreds of years. Along with your guide, you’ll wander through the picture-book Paris of Place Dauphine which was built by a king and designed for infinite games of boules. You’ll pass by the brooding Conciergerie where they held members of the royalty while the guillotine was sharpened. At the stunning Palais de Justice, you’ll see where Marie Antoinette was sentenced to death. Sainte-Chapelle is also nearby, still standing where it was built as a chapel for the royals and to hold the fragments of Christian faith which French Knights brought back from the crusades. If the spire looks familiar it is because it was the model for the one on Notre Dame which was recently destroyed by fire. As you explore further into the island, you’ll discover the roots of pagans, the remains of Romans and the faith of kings and queens which led them to believe they had a divine right to rule. Your tour will also take you across the Seine to the Left Bank, the playground of thousands of students and artists such as Joyce and Hemingway. While they were attracted by famous bookstores like Shakespeare and Co you will visit it to get the best views of Notre Dame Cathedral*. The Cathedral is, of course, currently closed due to the savage fire that ripped through it, but the exterior can be viewed on the tour. Its flying buttresses still stand strong under the scaffolding which surrounds it as restoration continues. Your guide will fill you in on how it became the Grand Dame of France and why its architecture was a radical departure from European churches of the time. The global outpouring of grief after the fire is a testament to the esteem that this cathedral is held in. You will discover how it has survived more than one occasion like this. *Please note that the streets around the Cathedral are closed until further notice. Therefore, we won’t be able to access the square in front of Notre Dame and see the 0km point. However, your guide will ensure to take you through alternative routes so you can get as close as possible to the Cathedral

Nate (Nathaniel) was our tour guide and was fantastic!! Even with the notre dame closed he still made it interesting and told stories of history that are interesting and not often heard. He dropped book recommendations and was genuinely friendly and wanting to help all on the tour. He braved the cold and was wonderful.

Georgia...by far the best, most knowledgeable, animated, and fun tour guide we had on our entire trip and we did 5 guided excursions while we were here. All were great tours, but no one made it as special as Georgia did. Don’t let her go because whoever has her on the staff is sure to bring in the great reviews.

Merci Beau Coup (I think that’s right)

Loved the tour, so interesting to hear about the original uses for some of the most famous buildings in Paris and how this has laid the foundation of parts of modern France. Tour guide Charlie was super knowledgeable and friendly, would recommend to anyone keen for a slightly different introduction to the city - or those who have been before and want a new perspective.

Time was wrong!
Aug 2019 • Family
We waited at the meeting spot at 10:30 am, but the tour guide never showed up. I called the tour company. They said our tour was at 9:30 am rather than 10:30 am. They said they sent me an email months back, but a few days before I received a reminder from trip advisor confirming our tour for 10:30 am. Disappointed, but the tour company agreed to refund our money. We ended up on the Hop on Hop Off bus touring the city and enjoyed this instead!

Dear JanetManor Thanks for taking the time to leave a review on Trip Advisor. We are sorry about the inconvenience happened on the day of your tour. From the system seems that you booked the original tour with the access to the Notre Dame, however, due the fire issue happened to the venue, we created a valid replacement to the original tour. For this reason, we have been in contact with all the clients to inform about the new tour itinerary and new starting time, apparently, you accepted the new option starting at 9.30 am. We are sorry if the wrong starting time was reconfirmed by Viator, we would have been glad to get in touch with you to reconfirm the new time. We are glad overall you accepted the refund, and please accept our apologies for the inconvenience cased. Thanks for leaving the feedback, this will definitely help us to improve our services. Kind Regards Barbara City Wonders Team

Michelle was fantastic! Full of information and historical facts that seem to come alive as she spoke. Too bad about the fire as I would have been very interested in entering the cathedral! Terrific tour and well worth the price of admission!

We loved our tour guide Fabrizia (sp?). She was Italian and a wealth of French and European historical knowledge. She had a very cheerful personality and kept my children's attention (ages 8 and 10). We would highly recommend this tour!

Wonderful tour
We booked through trip advisor and decided to pay a little extra for skip the line. It was well worth the money. We met our guide at a designated location and it was a walking tour. Our tour guide was multi lingual and very knowledgeable about the history of Paris and Norte Dame. The longest line we had to wait in was only to get through security and it actually moved fast. Then once inside the cathedral our guide took us around and it was very fascinating. Our tour option had the chance to go up to the bell tower, but there are a lot of stairs and it was extremely narrow so we didn’t end up going up to the top. Wear comfortable shoes and except to spend several hours there but well worth the money.
