Giverny is a must see. The gardens and ponds are incredible. You truly feel like you are walking in Monet's foot steps. I would go see it again.

Auvers-sur-Oise was Van Gogh's last stop. The town is nothing special. The only things to see are the little room he spent his final days and his grave. Not worth it.

We booked an all day tour to Giverny and Auvers-Sur-Oise from Paris. We were picked up on time by our guide Joanna. She was very nice and very knowledgeable about the areas that she took us to. Her driving was a bit wild, and at one point I asked her to please not text while she was driving.
We visited Giverny first had spent about 2 1/2 hours on the grounds, where we visited Monet's gardens, his house and his beautiful Japanese garden with lily pond. We had lunch right outside of the grounds which was very nice and convenient.
We left Giverny and headed to Auvers-Sur-Oise, where Van Gogh spent is last 70 days. We went into the room that he was living in, and walked to the field where he was shot, then across the lane to the cemetery where he and his brother are buried. We left there and rode about a mile away, where we visited the home of the doctor who cared for him, who was also his friend.
We were then driven back to our hotel and dropped off at the door. We arrived back around 5:30.

We were picked up promptly at our hotel and whisked to Giverny, where we beat the crowds and had the new garden all to ourselves long enough to take photos and be photographed alone on the Japanese Bridge. We then toured the new garden with expert commentary by our guide, Sarah, all along the way. I especially appreciated learning of how Monet himself designed and supervised the building of both gardens and his studios to maximize his painting plans and objectives. The careful arrangement of the rows of flowers in specific colors is still there and well maintained to this day. The famous lily pond was gorgeous and provides a perfect mirror if you shoot directly over it, showing the lilies and reflection of the trees and sky above - amazing! Our guide gave us a full description of the house before we entered and also was able to get us in ahead of the crowd; well worth viewing, but the gardens are the real attraction here. I was captivated by the story of Van Gogh and our visit to the last room he lived in, and where he died, as well as the very site of his suicide in a nearby field and his grave in the local cemetery. He and his brother Theo lie side by side. His story is so tragic an actually walking the ground he covered in his last days left a lasting impression. Once again, Sarah brought it all to life for us with her commentary and the tour also included a local guide who took us through the house, which is still a cafe, and the room where Van Gogh died. Sarah chose an excellent cafe for our lunch just outside Monet's house and we had plenty of time to enjoy our meal before moving on to the Van Gogh house. This was our second day-tour with a Viator contractor and Normandy Melody gets our highest compliments. I would gladly take similar tours through Viator anywhere in the world.

Giverny has the reputation of being so popular that it is usually impossible to experience it without being swept along by the crowds. Last year my daughter went and her tour company provided only a ticket and no info. As a result she spent an hour in the wrong line and when she did get in she wasn’t able to get to the 2nd floor of the Monet house because it was too crowded. A fellow Parisian tourist told me that he was so discouraged by the long line into the house that he skipped it entirely and just went to the gardens.

Our trip with Normandy Melody, although more expensive than most, was very much like a private tour of the gardens and the house. Our guide, Stephanie, met us at our hotel early so that we could arrive before Giverny opened. Before we arrived at Giverny she drove us around the area showing us the countryside and giving us a feel for why Money chose this area for his work. She provided excellent background and commentary throughout our trip.

When we arrived at Giverny Stephanie went to a special entrance and got us our tickets and used her incredible knowledge of the area to time our tour so that we moved effortlessly through the gardens the house. For example, while touring the garden near the house, she suggested that we move immediately into the house since there was a break in the crush of people.

The house was incredible and Stephanie’s comments essential. She talked about the paintings on the walls, especially Monet’s bedroom (reproductions, of course since the originals are at the Marmotten Museum) which were gifts from other Impressionist artists. We spent as much time as we needed in each room with Stephanie’s helpful and knowledgeable comments along the way. What a delightful experience.

Stephanie recognized that this was our tour of a lifetime and let us set the pace as we walked through the gardens. Her commentary, throughout, was excellent and made this truly an exceptional tour. Our tour of the Water Garden was especially lovely. She waited while we took photos and took some wonderful pictures of us along the way in both gardens. I was delighted that she suggested that she take a photo of us on the famous Japanese bridge!

I admit that I was apprehensive ahead of time about spending as much as we did on this tour, but I will always remember this exceptional tour and our outstanding guide, Stephanie.

Was on this trip (5 people) April 22. We were @ Giverny when it opened, went in tthe back way so there was no line. At that time, the water lily garden was only about 1/3 full of people. By the time we went thru the other garden, house, and gift shop, the whole place felt like wall to wall people, and the line to enter (if you were NOT on this tour) was atrocious. Our guide, Enrique, was very helpful and made sure that we saw everything we needed to see, then took us to Le Moulin de Hourges for our included lunch, that was delicious and included lots of alcohol, w/ a great dessert.

The trip to Auvers-sur-Oise was extremely interesting, although it really made you feel sorry for Van Gogh. An addendum to the trip would be to see the movie ‘Loving Van Gogh’. The movie is slightly weird as it shows pictures Van Gogh painted, with the characters coming to life like comic book characters, but it had new theories about Van Gogh’s death.

All-in-all, a wonderful day!
