About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Joanne L0 contributionsWay more physically demanding than advertised! This is a really good tour. It’s a long day for sure, but all of the stops except for Neuschwanstein Castle are too rushed. The stop at Linderhof Palace was far too rushed beyond the tour itself. We didn’t have nearly enough time to explore on our own. The visit at Neuschwanstein is far more physically demanding than the tour company lets on. If you don’t take the tram up the hill to the bridge to view the castle, that’s a 40 walk up a steep hill. The tram ride is absolutely terrifying the way the drivers fly up the steep winding mountainside. And please don’t take the horse carriage. The poor horses are worked far too hard hauling people up the mountain. Either take the tram or walk. Anyway, after you visit the bridge to get pictures, it’s a hike over to the castle itself, a climb uphill, and 300 steps in the castle. Trams don’t always run downhill, so you may need to walk back down the mountain to the bus. It’s about a 25 minute walk downhill. A lot of members of our group were older and really struggled with the level of walking and climbing required of the tour. As far as the tour guides went, the tour guide on the bus was good, the tour guide at Linderhof was good, but the tour guide at Neuschwanstein really needs some training. She seemed very disinterested in the group and just rushed through the tour. All in all it was a good day.Written 7 October 2024
- advisor_greg_720 contributionsBeautiful locationsThis was an enjoyable trip! Relatively easy to find the pick-up point (though slightly confusing to have walked up to see multiple buses; but there are only so many places that a bus can pull over in a city...). Our host Pedro was welcoming and got my group of 8 seated together. I didn't quite catch the reason, but I was disappointed when I heard the Oberammergau stop was not happening. (Something about road conditions?) Was looking as forward to that as I was the castles. Another FYI -- while there is a toilet on the bus, it's for emergency use only due to the limited capacity of the tank. So make sure you go before you get on the bus if at all possible. The Linderhof tour was nice; though I do wish we had a bit more time to explore the grounds. We were also told that no pictures were allowed inside the castle at all. Someone asked the Linderhof tour guide why they weren't allowed, and he said because it slowed down the group. Disappointing, but somewhat understandable. The ride to Hohenschwangau was nice, as we got to see some quaint towns. Pedro also had water, juice, soda (€2 each) and beer (€2.50 each) for sale on board, which was nice. After we got parked in Hohenschwangau, Pedro got everyone's tickets with our entry time for the Neuschwanstein Castle tour and suggested we use the time beforehand to grab lunch and/or look around the area. He also gave everyone a map showing the estimated times for getting from point to point. My group made the mistake of spending too much time on lunch at Müller Restaurant. Take my advise and just eat something quickly. We didn't have any time after lunch to explore the gift shops, because we had to be prompt for our castle tour start time. We were going to buy a ticket on the shuttle (€3), but the line was very long and we figured we'd never make it in time. The map said it was ~40 minutes to walk up the hill to the main entrance -- we did it in under 20 by going extra-fast. While that did leave us some time to enjoy the views from up top, we were not able to view the castle from the bridge, as that was another reportedly 15-min walk to get to and we didn't want to risk it. There was unfortunately no time after the tour to go to the bridge because we had to get back on the bus. My long-winded point here is that I felt this stop on the trip was also a bit rushed; but I know that was partially our own fault. The castle tour was very interesting (and also - no pictures allowed inside until we got to unfinished sections and the kitchen). So incredibly beautiful in there, and I'm happy to have been able to see it.Written 7 October 2024
- sabinej3820 contributionsRainy but fabulousEven though it was a rainy day I had a fabulous time exploring Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The city is magnificent and the shops outstanding. Tuck a walk on the city wall, fabulous. The buildings are just like out of a fairytale. On the way there we stopped and got a chance to visit Harburg Castle, really great place and the tour just added one more dimension to this day trip.Written 7 October 2024

- muhungc0 contributionsGermany VIP castle tourThis was a wonderful trip. Our tour guide Monika was a great guide who provided lots of info on the places we visited. The bus was comfortable and the snacks, water, and beer were a nice touch. Our driver was wonderful and got us everywhere safely and in a timely manner. There was free time built in to explore and Monika provided recommendations as well as clear communication on when to meet back and at what time. I would highly recommend this tour.Written 6 October 2024
- N5523RSrobertw0 contributionsGreat way to see the beautiful Bavarian countryside! What a well-organized, fun, beautiful tour of Bavaria. We saw Linderhof Palace and Neuschwanstein Castle. The guided tours were informative yet brief (which we appreciated as tired tourists wanting only a basic understanding of the history and significance). You could also self-tour the areas. Plenty of photo ops. You can buy food and drink on the bus. Drive was safe, scenic, and comfortable. 11/10 would recommend!Written 5 October 2024
- MelanieD430 contributionsOverall a great experience! This was overall a great experience! The bus from Munich was very comfortable and our tour guide was very good. We started at Linderhof Palace with plenty of time to explore and take the tour of the palace. Then we went to Neuschwanstein castle where I would have liked a little more time here. We had lunch (long lines) then took the shuttle to the castle and took the (rather brief) tour. The tour itself is not that great...you listen to a little audio device and the tour guide just walks you room to room and there is really no time/opportunity for questions. (no stars deducted here because this is not the fault of this tour that I am reviewing.) I did deduct one star because I really would have liked to have more time to explore this area...there was not enough time to wait in the line for Mary's Bridge (long line) and definitely not enough time to see Hohenschwangau castle next door. I'm not sure how to remedy this, as it's already a very long day (8:30am-7pm) but when you're only there once, it would be nice to see all of the things.Written 5 October 2024

The hike to the bridge is a bit steep and would advise to take the bus. But the castle and views were amazing. Definately worth the moneyWritten 3 October 2024

The tourist although curt and polite seemed very annoyed when I asked a question about the website info that said cash only when it turned out to be card only. I knew it wasn’t his fault but he just seemed annoyed that I asked. Tell people before they board the bus to avoid the confusion. I was disappointed that there was hardly any historical facts given while on the tour and the small information he did give out was spoken so softly I didn’t catch most of it. I felt that I was not given a “tour” but paid for an expensive bus ride and entrance fee with someone telling me what direction to go and when to meet back on the bus. Not good at all, I wished I had paid for a better tour.

Without any doubt, a private guide would be better in your case. A big tour affords, that the guide work for everyone, and sincerely not everyone want to be teached about history 10 hours. Some people just want to see the landscape, other want special information, and others just want to spend a vacation day without disturbances (like guides talking all time).
If you had contact me before, I would give you a better consultance. But you decided to do by yourself. Next time write to guide@sightseeing-munich.com

What an amazing tour this was!! Well worth the time and money! While the Eagles Nest isn’t large and doesn’t take a lot of time, it is quite the experience to be there and learn about more of the authentic history and to visually see it. We had very dismal weather which impacted views but really added to the feeling. We walked to the top of the mountain peak. It was surprising that we were all fogged in but just as we were about to board the bus, we looked up and the fog had lifted over the Eagles Nest and we got a great view!
We were fortunate and had Elisabeth as our tour guide and Robert, as our bus driver. Elisabeth is a wealth of knowledge about the WW2 history and much more. Being a tour guide is so obviously not just her job. It is her passion and she exudes this from start to finish. Our day ended in an unfortunate manner as there was much sad flooding in the area and it was difficult to find a route that would allow us to get back to Munich. Robert did an absolutely amazing job of taking us down different backroads, some of which worked and some of which resulted in us having to back up. Both, he and Elisabeth were excellent at maneuvering this unexpected event. Again, highly recommend this tour and the very competent and engaging staff, Elisabeth and Robert.

Elizabeth was an excellent guide with equally excellent English! We learned a lot on this tour from the minute we started our drive out of the city which was appreciated, understanding some of the historical context of the buildings, streets, and districts. The tour was informative, and her instructions were very clear regarding meeting points and times.
One point - there were no wifi or charging capabilities on this bus compared to other tours I have taken in the past, so please plan accordingly since it makes for a very long day!

This was a very informative tour, with an enthusiastic guide, who provides an abundance of interesting nuggets of information about the region, the history and notable accomplishments, throughout the journey. This is clearly what separates such a decision to book, from the chance to go it alone. All is taken care of by the tour company, which makes the very long day, go by with very few setbacks. There was enough time to enjoy and explore the site, because the interiors are rather limited in scope.
The weather is the biggest gamble, which is where Alpine regions can make or break your photo album. We arrived to a prolonged downpour. Views of and from the summit were extremely limited for the entirety of the trip, which was extremely disappointing, especially when you look at the postcards. The documentation museum is well worth time dedicated to it and the audio guide therein, is simply fascinating. The guide and driver combine wonderfully to engage the tour participants for both stretches of the long journey from Munich, pointing out and slowing down (where possible) to allow scope and splendour to be fully absorbed. Highly recommended...if only the weather was as good!

This was a very educational/informative tour. The tour guide Elisabeth was very prepared and able to provide information on way to destination, while at destination and on way back. Was able to answer any questions that any of the tourists had. With the documentation center being renovated we were able to go for a walk down to the ruins of the Berghof. Would recommend that anyone who has an interest in world war 2 take this tour.

The tour we experienced was good. However, we were very disappointed in the tour operator. They were aware days in advance that Eagles Nest was going to be close due to snow from the prior week and they did not communicate this in advance to participants. Several of us were disappointed to learn the morning of the tour (too late to cancel for refund) when the weather was a clear blue sky and bright sunshine. Additionally, there were 61 participants which is more than the stated maximum 48 participants. The description should be updated! Or Operator provide promised services.

Excellent trip! Myself, my mum and two daughters (50, 72, 20, 15) booked a trip to Munich for this tour. It's something my mum has always wanted to see all her life since my grandfather fought in WW2 and received the Burma Star, her interest in WW2, Third Reich especially was cemented. We went with Gray Line Tours from Munich. Our guide was Caroline (short black hair, pink lippy, large sunglasses) and she was a lovely lady, gave us lots of information and facts about Munich, Berchtesgaden, Obersalzburg and most importantly WW2 history of Hitler's mountain residence The Kehlsteinhaus Eagle's Nest. She held our full attention for the 2 hour scenic journey to Berchtesgaden. We arrived and had time for refreshments in the nearby restaurant overlooking the mountain peaks. Then Caroline met us for our shuttle bus to take us up the Obersalzburg. It was extremely high! Then from the parking area halfway up Caroline took us in the brass elevator to The Eagle's Nest. My mum was very tearful and said she felt like she'd walked straight into a history book ! The panoramic views were just amazing! We were so lucky with the weather, beautiful crystal clear, sunny day, we could see forever. We took lots of photos to remember the day always. The snacks, drinks and souvenirs to our surprise weren't overpriced. We were able to get a seat outside on the verandahs with a priceless view. After Caroline took us back down, our group were able to browse through the souvenir shops and have a bite to eat with a view again. Then back on the comfy bus for a ride through Berchtesgaden Town, adorable, then off back to Munich with Caroline giving us lots more info about Bavaria. All in all we would do this again in a heartbeat! Excellent tour, brilliant guide, value for money, simply fantastic day, especially for my little mum. I'm so pleased I was able to make this happen for her, she was so happy. Thank you!

Great tour! Long bus ride (2 1/2 hrs), but definitely worth the wait. You go on this tour for the views and the Nazi history, not so much the eagles nest building as it is basically just a restaurant, with a small hallway museum. And I would recommend if the documentation museum is not open, to walk with Elisabeth to Hitler’s home, the trek is steep but worth it! The tour guide Elisabeth is amazing!! Definitely ask for her! Gives so much facts and information the whole ride to Berchtesgaden and the way down!

Our tour guide was Elizabeth, and our driver was Carson. They were both excellent. When we booked the tour, we expected mainly transportation and tickets as appropriate, but little else. We were really surprised and very pleased to find out that this was a fully guided tour. Elizabeth was extremely knowledgeable about the history, and provided great historical content throughout the tour. She was also fantastic with communication about where and when to meet her to do additional guided activities throughout the afternoon, and there were plenty of guided versus self-guided options. Carson did a great job of efficiently getting us to and from the locations, and the bus was very comfortable, and featured drinks and a full lavatory. Would definitely recommend!

The night before our Eagle’s Nest tour, lightning struck their elevator, so it was closed. Now that is obviously not Gray Line’s fault, BUT, we were not given the opportunity to choose whether or not to continue with their impromptu backup plan (in which we had zero interest). They made the reservation call to the Eagle’s Nest after we’d already embarked, and so we were basically trapped on the bus. Also, our guide didn’t do a head count or announcement before our (replacement) salt mine tour, and despite waiting right outside the entrance, our tour left without us.
After this catastrophe of a day, the company’s customer service was absolutely abysmal. The rep was rude, and we had to press them very hard for even a small partial refund.
If you can use a different tour company, do.

Written 5 August 2019
It depends on how much you want to explore when you get to Obersalzberg. You are going to be on a bus for 1/2 the day. Back and forth from Munich, then up and down to Kehlsteinhaus. When you're up at Kehlsteinhaus, there is a lot of exploring you can do further up the mountain peak, down below you can walk to the Document Center, into the Bunkers, over to the remains of the Berghof, etc. So, if your little one is up for exploring that day - you'll definitely get more out of it. I don't recall seeing anyone with strollers - the fold-up umbrella style would be your best bet.
